Chat with Farrell Evans

Alex (Anaheim)

Who do you like in the Humana Challenge? Nothing to do with my fantasy team, by the way..

Farrell Evans
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome golf fans,Let's get started.Alex, I like Matt Kuchar. He had a 7th last year here and a second in 2010. He is the perennial top 10 king in golf. I expect him to add some wins this year to all those top 10s.

Bill (Toronto)

Are there any lesser known golfers who might emerge "out of nowhere" to look for this year? I know those in the golf community will know them, but someone who the casual fan might notice.

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Bill,There are so many good young players. But "out of nowhere" I think is hard to peg because all of this guys who have made it to the Tour can win. But an older player like Jeff Maggert or Billy Mayfair could have better years than we have seen from them in a long time.

JY (Toronto)

Any (realistic) chance Luke isnt #1 in the world come January 1st 2013?

Farrell Evans
  (3:07 PM)

Someone will replace Luke as the most consistent player in the world by the end of the year. Remember, nowadays, the best player in the world isn't the most dominating, but the most consistent. All to say, he won't be a guy with a lot of wins, but he'll have a boatload of top 10s.

Steve (Chicago)

It seems clear this kid Cauley is for real and we have a whole crop of long lean bombers (Stanley, Steele, Bradley) who can go low and will win again soon. Anyone else catch your eye out there we don't know much about ?

Farrell Evans
  (3:09 PM)

Steve,Two good young players to watch are my Georgia buddies, Harris English and Brian Harman. But of young veterans, don't look past Spencer Levin, who I wrote about today.

JY (Toronto)

What does your gut tell you re: whether Tiger will catch Jack and surpass his 18 majors?

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

JY,Tiger needs to win five majors over the next 10 years or so. It's possible but not likely with the depth of today's fields.

JY (Toronto)

Who wins more this year - Tiger or Stevie (er, Adam)?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Tiger gets two wins to Adam's 1.

Damian (Idaho)

How do you think Tiger Woods will fair at the AT&T Pebble Beach this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

Tiger won by 15 shots there in a U.S. Open and he's won the Pro-Am. He should do well but for him to win a lot of things have to go his way. The weather is always bad. He could get the wrong end of the draw one day and play his round in some bad conditions. You can never tell when the weather might be a factor at Pebble Beach.

Rob (Oakland)

How's your game these days? How often do you play?

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Rob,I live in New York City and when I'm not on the road, I try to get out to Bethpage (Black), where i take a beating and lose a lot of money to my friends, who are also masochistic when it comes to golf. When I play a friendlier tract, I can break 80 most of the time.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Hottest & the Coldest PGA Tour Event ever on Record?

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Chris,You love this question. One of the hottest on record is the '64 U.S. Open at Congressional and mornings are cold at a lot of West Coast events and some of the fall events. But the schedulers at the PGA Tour try not to pick venues where you would have all day cold weather.

Shoshana (Boston)

Any expectations for Phil this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:19 PM)

Shoshana,Phil is going to be Phil. He's going to get up for the majors and the Players, maybe. Don't get me wrong, he hasn't lost any desire, but who has time to grind for 20 years over every single tournament you play?

Rob (Oakland)

Dark horse candidate to win a major this year is....?

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Rob,I like Hunter Mahan to win a major. He's my dark horse, even if there might be some better candidates for this distinction.

Rob (Oakland)

Ever get the chance to play at Augusta National?

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Rob,Never played Augusta. Hoping to one day win the media lottery on the monday after the tournament.

Nick Wegmann (Athens, GA)

Do you see Bubba Watson making a run at a Major this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Nick,When you have the kind of imagination that Bubba has with a golf club, you can win anywhere at anytime. But Bubba is a mental case. If he can forget the setting, he'll probably win one before he's done.

Shoshana (Boston)

Haha well yeah, but if I set the over/under at 1.5 wins are you taking over or under? And does he get a major?

Farrell Evans
  (3:24 PM)

Shoshana,I'm taking under and I won't say whether he wins a major until I see how he does leading up to the Masters.

LeAnne (Snowy Washington)

Farrell, any chance Vegas repeats?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

I had a good chat with Vegas on Tuesday. He is a swell guy who works really hard on his game. He says he's playing alright, but he didn't sound super enthusiastic. He's just happy to be a defending champion.

Rob (Oakland)

Do you see Sergio doing anything this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Sergio obviously had a great finish to 2011 in Europe. But I would like to see how he does in the States. Everybody knows he's got the talent, but too often over the years we've seen him get down on himself after a bad round. Hopefully, he's past all that fragility now.

Rob (Oakland)

Will you be covering the Ryder Cup? All 4 Majors too?

Farrell Evans
  (3:31 PM)

Yes sir.

LeAnne (Snowy Washington)

Chris Kirk had a good go at it last year, what are his chances this time around?

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Kirk is obviously a fine player. I don't think he was a fluke winner last year. He started this year out well with a T-7 at Hyundai. I like him to have another solid year.

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

My predictions this Year? Tiger, Westwood, a old guy and an absolute no name win majors this year. You like?

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

Tdiddy,That's a pretty good list. But I would drop Westwood and insert either Webb Simpson, Luke Donald or Hunter Mahan.

Rob (Oakland)

Fave and least fave swings on tour?

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Favorite swings on tour: Rory Mcilroy, Bill Haas, Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh, and Tommy Gainey.Least favorite: I like any swing that's repeating, although I love guys with great rhythm. To call out my least favorite misses the infinite ways in which guys get the ball in the hole.

Shoshana (Boston)

How about AK? Does he bounce back this year? and make a run at the RC?

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

Shoshana,AK likes the bright lights and the entourage. So he'll get up for the Ryder Cup and everything that comes with trying to get there. But the same things that inspire him are also what can hold him back. He says he's past good times, but if he's not that ok today. It's probably good for the PGA Tour to have a guy like him.

Nelson (DE)

Regarding the earlier question on if Tiger wins more majors than Nicklaus: what's your basis for saying fields are deeper than in previous years? Are there stats to prove that point?

Farrell Evans
  (3:50 PM)

Nelson,There are more good players now than there were in 2000 and 2001: better prepared, more fit, more power players, more different players winning, more everything.

Rob (Oakland)

Have an opinion on belly putters?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

Love anything that helps you make putts. When the USGA bans them I'll back the move, but for now I'll take what I can get.

phins fan (ny)

when will the dolphins hire their new coach?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

Jeff Fisher turned them down because he couldn't control player personnel. They are looking for a coach to work with a strong GM.

Jeff (Sacramento)

True/False: Spencer Levin picks up a win this year.

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

True.

gary (indiana)

If Tiger DOESN'T win another major, will Thanksgiving 2010 be one of the darkest, most unfortunate days in golf history?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Gary,I don't think so because to say that would mean we believe he didn't win another one because of that night. And I don't think it's that simple.

Jeff (Sacramento)

Who wins first: Levin, Gainey or Dufner?

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

Spencer Levin.

Rob (Oakland)

I grant you 1 rule change - what is it?

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

Make every player use the exact same golf clubs.

Shoshana (Boston)

The fields are also much deeper now than when Jack was saying, and the advances in technology have reduced talent separation. It's harder for Tiger to win majors than it was for Jack, just like it was harder for MJ to win championships than Russel

Chilly (Minnesota)

Any word on Fredrik Jacobson's injury?

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Chilly,I haven't heard anything.

gary (indiana)

Well, for the sake of argument, that night is what exposed Tiger to be something none of us knew. And since then, with that exposure, he hasn't been the same Tiger on the golf course. Some of it is physical, sure, with the injuries -- but a lot of it seems to be mental. And what else would cause those besides the fallout from the Thanksgiving 2010 events?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Well, the injuries, the swing changes and the flat out poor play. He's not SuperMan.

Shoshana (Boston)

Why on same clubs? Generally don't care if someone is using a blade vs a mallet putter or 59 degree wedge vs 60

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

If they are playing the same blade then the best ball strikers will emerge. It's too easy for these guys to hit the ball solid.

Shoshana (Boston)

btw Farrel thanks for the chat, you in the dessert?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Yes I am and it's a welcome respite from the cold New York winter.

Bryce (Nevada)

Why is golf so not entertaining?

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Bryce,You don't play do you?

Bob (Seattle)

Worst swing - Billy Mayfair's putting stroke. Yips inducing.

Kyle (China)

Tiger woods is a chick magnet , yes or no?

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Yes.

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger hasn't won a major since the ACL surgery (and that 08 yr could've been special), but ACL's an left knee injuries an be serious. Ernie hasn't been same since his either. I'm sure the car crash etc haven't helped, but don't think it's remotely the sole reason

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

Gotta go on that note. Thanks everybody. See you next week, same time, same place....Thanks.
