Chat with Barry Melrose

Adam (Toronto)

NJ pulls the upset tonight after being embarrassed last time BOS came to town. Bank it!

Berry Melrose
  (2:03 PM)

I disagree. Boston has lost two of the last three games. Didn't play well. I think you'll see a pretty angry team tonight from Boston. They won't be happy to lose two games in a row.

Eddie (Indiana)

Do you see the Anaheim Ducks making another late season playoff push? Also, do you think Getlzlaf or Ryan are going to be moved at the deadline?

Berry Melrose
  (2:03 PM)

They're doing that already. They're starting to play well. You're seeing how good a team they can be. But I think they're too late. Any team that's 10 or more points out of the playoffs after 40 games hasn't made the playoffs. They'll play better, start winning some games, but they're too far behind to catchup.

Chad (Pa)

Barry who is your favorite out west? and do you like the realignment?

Berry Melrose
  (2:04 PM)

Chicago. I've liked them from Day 1. If you saw them last night, you saw how good they can be. They have rookies that help them a lot.

Alex (Memphis TN)

Can you explain the lack of production in Colombus I mean Jeff Carter, Rick Nash, RJ Umberger they should be scoring more and Jeff wisnieski they should be a good team what happened?

Berry Melrose
  (2:05 PM)

It's been a disaster from the start. Injuries, suspension. Carter got hurt as soon as he got there. Nothing's been good from Columbus. Not a positive thing has come out of Columbus. You combine that all together and you get mediocrity.

Rob (Chicago)

Are the Chicago rookies for real? These guys are killing it out there. What are your thoughts on them?

Berry Melrose
  (2:06 PM)

They're for real. They're getting more ice time than normal because of the injury to Sharp. They're very good players. They're playing with good players. I can score if I'm playing with Toews.

Bill (Montreal)

As a Habs fan and having watched last night's 3-0 loss to the Caps, I am ready to write off the season. Please give me and all Habs fan some sort of optimism for next year. Please!!!

Berry Melrose
  (2:07 PM)

Not really anything to talk about. The team you see on the ice is what you got. There is not Crosby's or Malkins in the pipelines. You have the good goalie and good young defenseman. But that's your team. You have to get them to play somehow. Whoever coaches next year and is the GM, they have to make some deals. There is no calvary coming for the Canadiens.

Ross (Vegas)

Kings looked good against the Canucks!!! Are we going to see Gagne play again this year? Will it cost us Bernier to get another top 6 forward and if so who will the Kings target?

Berry Melrose
  (2:07 PM)

I think so. I haven't seen any reports taht he's out for the year. He's been hurt before. You always worry about guys with concussions before. They'll be ap layoff team.

brian (seattle)

Hey Barry, Colorado contender or pretender? PS how good was it to see Peter Meuller healthy and scoring again?

Berry Melrose
  (2:08 PM)

They're a contender. They have a good young team. They're playing better. Goaltender has to be better. But this team will hand around. They're not going away.

Meto (Chicago (via Detroit))

How do the Red Wings take their winning ways on the road? Do you see them breaking the home winning streak record (20 games)?

Berry Melrose
  (2:09 PM)

You just have to do the same thing. They're playing great right now. Howard is as good a goalie as there is in the NHL. They're a veteran team. They'll start getting it on the road too. I love the way they're playing.

Kyle S. (NJ)

Hey Barry, just wanted your take on the Rangers. As a fan it's been a dream season so far. As long as Henrik continue to play at this level do you see them as the team to beam in the East? I know Boston is right there, but the Rangers depth on the blue line, the tenacious fore check and play from our top two lines has Ranger nation hyped.

Berry Melrose
  (2:10 PM)

They have a lot of company. They're very good. You still have the Bruins. You have the Flyers. You don't know about the Penguins' injuries. Right now the two best in the East are the Bruins and Rangers.

Aron (STC)

Hey Barry Thanks for the Chat!!! My Blues have a rough road with both the Red Wings and Blackhawks in their division. Do you think Blues need to add something at the deadline to take that next step or would getting McDonald, Steen and Russell back and health be enough?

Berry Melrose
  (2:10 PM)

Everyone will be trying to add something at the deadline. There are a lot of teams that think they can win. It will be an active deadline. Everyone will be trying to add players.

Matt (Minnesota)

What are your thoughts on Olympic sized rinks vs NHL standard rinks? As a Golden Gopher hockey fan (they skate on Olympic), it's my opinion that it could only be good for the NHL (if owners can handle losing 2-3 rows of seats)

Berry Melrose
  (2:12 PM)

I don't think so. I think you take a lot of hitting out of the game if you go to an Olympic size rink. Players don't attack the net as much because it's too big. It looks great at the Olympics because you have the 20 best players from each country. I like the rink size. I like the game right now. It's fast, physical.

ted (cape cod)

Hi, Barry. NBC pointed out last night Patrick Kane has been in a serious slump on the ice scoring wise. Should Chicago fans be worried about this occurrence? How would you coach him up?

Berry Melrose
  (2:13 PM)

I don't think so. If you saw the game last night, he had a lot of chances. He needs to shoot more. He's being too unselfish. If I'm a Blackhawks fan, I don't have Sharp and Kane's been in a slump yet they're in first place. I'm excited.

Dan (FL)

Have the Caps finally turned the corner? 7 wins in the last 10 games. How important is it for them to get Backstrom back?

Berry Melrose
  (2:14 PM)

I think so. I think you're starting to see the new Caps. Run and gun is over. When you do that, you take your skill guys away from their strength. Backstrom, Semin, Ovechkin. If you're going to play a more structured game, they won't have the same freedom.

Adam (Buffalo,NY)

Buy or sell Calgary trading Jerome Ignla before the trading deadline?

Berry Melrose
  (2:14 PM)

Yes, but only if they really struggle. If they're completely out of it, they could look at it if it's a sweet enough deal. If they're in the hunt, they won't do that.

Tom (Chicago)

Barry, what is it about Boston that makes them so chippy? Even one of their fans almost got into a fight with the Tampa Bay mascot yesterday.

Berry Melrose
  (2:15 PM)

Well, the Bruins have passionate fans. Always have. They play a physical style. They're in your face. I like that. That's how they play. And sometimes those mascots tick you off every once in a while.

Sam (Seattle)

Hey Barry, right now Veznia goes to Quick, Elliot. Thomas, Howard, Lundquist?

Berry Melrose
  (2:16 PM)

I would have to give it to Lundqvist. He's got a great body of work. He's playing great. His numbers are the best in just about every category.

Peter (Nashville,TN)

Do you see Nashville retaining Shea Weber after this season is over?

Berry Melrose
  (2:17 PM)

They're going to do everything they can to sign him and Suter. That's what they're telling everybody. They think they can. They'll try to hang on to them. If they can't, then they'll try to sign one, trade one.

Troy (MI)

The penguins have won a few in a row. Can they keep it up?

Berry Melrose
  (2:17 PM)

Yes. Letang is playing tonight. That's a huge addition. I think they're through the worst of it. They've turned a corner and playing good hockey right now.

Joel (Los Angeles, CA)

Datsyuk. Your front runner for the Selke? Could he also be up for MVP with his killer season?

Berry Melrose
  (2:18 PM)

Yeah. He's so good. Puck stealing and defensively, it's pretty hard not to give it to him the way he's playing right now.

mark (detroit)

how god you think the red wing are how fair they can go berry

Berry Melrose
  (2:19 PM)

Right now, they're as good as any in the NHL. They beat Chicago the last time they played them. They're getting goals from different guys. Right now, Vancouver, Detroit, Chicago in the West and Boston and New York in the East.

Zach (Burlington,VT)

Barry! Craig Anderson has been on fire lately for Ottawa. Can he keep up his success for a playoff push?

Berry Melrose
  (2:19 PM)

He did in Colorado in a few years ago. That's how he got the big deal with Ottawa. He had a big year and kept it up.

Joe (NY)

Do you think the Islanders can become playoff contenders before their lease is up in 2015? I hope at that point they can go to Brooklyn to a decent arena, maybe get some FA's then and mauybe become the franchise they once more. Or I may be dreaming.

Berry Melrose
  (2:20 PM)

Yeah, I think by 2015. Not this year. They'll get another high pick this year. Sooner or later, it has to happen after the picks. They have to stop with the goofy contracts. DiPietro is out again. They're still paying Yashin.

Dan (Minnesota)

Who/what is to blame in Minnesota?

Berry Melrose
  (2:21 PM)

I don't think anything's to blame. They're having a pretty good year. They've had some injuries. They haven't scored the way I thought they would, but they're still fighting for the playoffs. A month ago, they were fighting for first overall in the NHL.

Sunny (Buffalo,NY)

What's wrong with Ryan Miller,Barry?

Berry Melrose
  (2:22 PM)

Ryan Miller doesn't know what's wrong with Ryan Miller. Confidence is big with goaltenders. If they knew the problem, they would have fixed it by now. Miller and the Sabres are a mess right now.

Sean (Quebec City)

Will Quebec City ever have an NHL team ever again?

Berry Melrose
  (2:23 PM)

Yes. I think they will. When you see the success of Winnipeg and the other Canadian teams doing well. The economy in Canada is doing well. I think you'll see a team there before too long.

Mike (San Diego)

How big of an impact do you think Jason Arnott and Jamie Langenbrunner have had on the Blues so far this year? It seems like those two and Hitch have had a big impact on some of the younger guys on the team.

Berry Melrose
  (2:24 PM)

They know how to win. That's why they got them. They're not the players they were 10 years ago, but they're effective. That plus accountabiilty with Hitchcock and the younger players, they're one of the better teams in the NHL.

Sam (Seattle)

Barry, I hate to ask but whats the latest on the Coyotes ownership? will Seattle get a team?

Berry Melrose
  (2:25 PM)

These things tend to drag out. Gary Bettman said the NHL will not operate Phoenix next year. An owner needs to be in place. But these things tend to drag on forever.

Justin (NJ)

Are the Devils going to make the playoffs this year? What moves will they need to make come deadline?

Berry Melrose
  (2:25 PM)

I think they are. I think they're getting better all of the time. The younger players are getting better. I think the Devils are for real.

Mike (Beltsville)

What's the deal with the Caps? I know they've been winning, but their is no way they can keep it up while getting handily out-shot and playing most the game in their end zone, right?

Berry Melrose
  (2:27 PM)

They give up too many shots. I've said that before. They can get better defensively and that's an area that should improve. That's one area that they've talked about, even though they're happy with the wins.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Barry, Patrice Bergeron should win the Selke this year, he should have won in last year.

Berry Melrose
  (2:28 PM)

He's great too. I could make cases for both of them. Bergeron is playing great. He won the Cup last year. Datsyuk's offensive numbers are a bit better, but they're both excellent hockey players. I wouldn't have a problem with either one winning.

Berry Melrose
  (2:28 PM)

I hope everyone enjoys the all-star weekend next weekend. That kicksoff the final third of the season.
