Time for another quick hour chatting with you. I want to start with asking you all this... When the Bob Hope was 5 rounds and featured a ton of celebrities, were you ok with that? Do you like the new format better (four days, hardly any amateurs)?
Is there a next big household name in golf? Webb Simpson?
It depends on what you'd call a household name. If by that you mean someone who's not a golf fan knows their name, Rickie Fowler might have the best chance but... If you mean golf fans will know him if they saw him out at WalMart, yeah, I'd say Webb has the all around game to get there.
One of my best friend is a caddie and has been at it for awhile and i think he is pretty dam good. what advise can i give him to make it on the tour or on one of the tours.
Has he ever caddied at a tour event? There's a huge difference between club and tour caddies. It's been done before but there's a big learning curve when you have to learn new courses on a weekly basis.
Which PGA Golfer has the worst score in PGA Golf History?
John Daly made an 18 on one hole in'98 at Bay Hill. Tommy Armour made a 23 in '27 but I wasn't there for that one!
If you could loop it for one player, past or present, for a weekend who would it be?
Seve. I'd love to hear him talk thru creating the shots he had to create. After that, Nicklaus. Woods is choice three.
I like the format better...nobody needs to watch celebs hacking it up. Also 5 days is way too long for a golf tournament. With ProAm and practice rounds that's a 9 day week.
There is no Wednesday pro-am at this event because it is a pro-am. And you get a cart to use for practice. Just so you know.
It's good and bad. Five rounds is too much, and definitely impacted the fields. On the other hand, everything is better with Bill Murray. Everything.
What are your thoughts on the new Haney book, and Tiger's comments toward it?
I haven't read the book (but I am definitely going to) and I was surprised Tiger commented at all about it because by saying something, he helped promote it. And he hates when people make money off his name.
What's been your most memorable moment that you've called on the radio? & why?
Two, called Tiger's third round at Torrey Pines US Open. And the interview I did with Mark Wilson's caddie after they'd won at Honda (it made me and listener's cry)
To respond to your original question, the original 5 day format was a lot better, but I think that the more serious tournament format (4 day) draws a better field.
Will the Hank's book coming out, do you think players will ask coaches to sign confidentiality agreements in future?
Then coaches will ask players to keep paying them even after they stop working together? No, that won't happen. You know how many caddies could write best sellers?! It's just something that 99.9% of guys wouldn't do.
M.C. - Have you ever looped an event like the Hope or AT&T where the amatures are more famous than most of the pros? How do the tour guys like it? Who really digs it and who simply puts up with it? Assuming the guys who really hate just don't play.
Looped both and for both amatuers and pros, and both times my pro's were not as famous as the celebrities we played with. But pros are cool with it because most of the celebs are looking at them the same way. The last couple years I've caddied for George Lopez, gonna do it again this year. It's the most fun I've ever had caddying.
Also, I like the new format for the Hope. 5 rounds is too much, and as a golf fan, I could care less about seeing the amateurs. I would rather see more good pros in the tournament, and that shows this year. Less Amateurs and less rounds= bigger names and a deeper field
Hank should donate the proceeds to the TW Foundation..thoughts?
Ha. No, that ain't gonna happen. I understand where your thinking is here but it's business. You fired me, I write a book about you and get paid anyway. The term "nanny, nanny, boo, boo" comes to mind.
How slow is Ben Crane actually? He took the lead rather fast today :)btw: i like the new format better than the old one
It won't be too noticeable this week because of the pro-am format, but during a regular tour event by Sunday he is a bit slower than on Thursday and Friday but he knows it and has gotten MUCH faster than he was in the past.
Mahan or Watney?
for consistency... Watney
Who on tour is funnier than you? Or who comes close?
No one, but that's because I was a full time comic for a long time. Ben Crane is smart enough and quick witted enough. Bubba would be Robin Williams like if he ever tried stand up.
how fun of a guy is Rich Beem. got a couple chances to bs with him he seems like fun guy
he's a great guy, such a shame how injuries have kept him down for so long. I caddied for him as a fill in when his normal caddie had to take a week off, we had a blast together.
How has Dustin Johnson looked phsically? I don't take much stock in his slow start, but had heard that he hadn't even walked 18 prior to Thursday and was a possible WD
I haven't seen him up close. But it sounded like he may have come back a little too early.
Last year, a player was DQ'd because her caddy used a divot tool & a piece of yarn to judge wind. What have you ever done, if anything, to get your player DQ'd or penalized?
Wow. I've never done anything to get my player dq'd. Came close to getting a penalty once but caught myself before an infraction occurred.
Totally ok with the changes, 3 days of watching amateurs is more than enough. I don't need more celeb softball games all star weekend either
I'm surprised TW said anything about Hank's book too...believe he help sell a few thousand more copies...do you believe Tiger when he said he wouldn't read it?
yes. That way when people ask him, "comments on this part of the book?" he can say, I haven't read it.
Looping for Barkley? Easiest or hardest gig at a pro-am? Seems like you could hand him any club and any time, wouldn't much matter
hardest because you know inside he's dying wanting to hit a good shot and you're trying to keep him positive. Plus what if you give him a club hoping for a bad swing and the blind squirrel finds the nut and hits it perfect... over the green by 40 yards!!
will you caddie for me i will grow the best lawn for you. even trade
I live in a townhouse. No deal! Sorry. ;)
SYou caddied for my cousin Michael Thompson and you said he does all his yardages to the fives. Is that unusual and what was your experience with him like?
He was great. Has a very positive attitude on the course like me and we got along very well. It was very unusual that he did his yardages to the 5's, I had never done that before but it made getting yardages pretty easy except when there was wind. He read all his own putts and can roll the rock. I think he's gonna have a nice long career on tour.
Last week, you mentioned one of the greatest shots you ever saw was by George Lopez at the Outback pro-am. Can you describe the shot?
he missed a green bad and was under a tree so he couldn't hit the flop shot he's really good at. he asked me what to do. I gave him a seven iron, told him where to put it in his stance, where to bump it short of the green and what it would do. He executed it (he had never hit that type shot before)and the ball rolled out to an inch of the hole.
The Haney book, per reviews, doesn't mention his "personal" life so why would TW bag on it?
main reason is because it talks about his failures and it's getting Haney paid using Tiger and Tiger's not getting anything from it
Tiger just said a green man dancing was the funniest/craziest thing he's seen in the gallery. What about you?
Craziest thing I can't say, funniest is the things the group in Phoenix yell at golfers on the 16th tee. They really do their homework.
do the guys have side bets when playing a tournament?
No. I know it's disappointing to here but it's true. There are some friendly games during practice rounds though!
Which happens first: McIlroy wins a second major, or Rickie Fowler wins his first?
Fowler wins first, but McIlroy wins a major later this year!
Favourite event to cover and why?
Great question, never really thought about it. Love Maui cause most golfers are in great moods and everyone is talkative and looking forward to the year. But I love everything about Zurich (New Orleans), RBS (Hilton Head), and Disney
Do you have a favorite among the lesser known tournaments?
New Orleans, Hilton Head, Memphis, and San Antonio love them!!
Vegas, Woodland, Kokrak...these are the guys Tiger was saying were going to hit the scene and do damage. Out of those 3 who will have most career W's???
Woodland if he can stay healthy but it'll be close
Do the players consider this week almost like pre-season?
no, silly season at the end of the year is like the "pre-season" because it's SO close to the start of the next year.
can you tell us what its like in the club house or where ever all the players meet for some drinks.
Most guys don't drink or hang out in the clubhouse after a round so it's a kind of boring spot, unless there's a big game on tv but even then they'll find a place to go watch.
Which 20-something PGA player has the best sense of humor?
ask me that half way thru the season and I'll have a good answer for ya!!
Hot dog that goes so fast! I really wanna thank you for hanging out with me for a while. If I didn't get to your question email me (ESPNCaddie@gmail.com) and I promise to answer! I'll be back on Monday and we'll do it again. Have a great weekend!
