Chat with Chris Mortensen

Chris Mortensen
  (11:01 AM)

Good morning... what a great playoffs season but plenty to talk about and little time to do it so let's go.

Scooter, minny [via mobile]

Do u think the vikings made the right move hiring spielman as G.m. wasnt very good in miami?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:04 AM)

I don't know that it wasn't very good and I'm not sure he had a true GM role because the head coach may have had final say (not matter what they say). He's a rock solid football guy.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:07 AM)

That was the answer to Vikings question.... also accidentally deleted a question about Tom Brady and facing a Giants defense that has a formidable front four but whether Brady can exploit the NY LBs and DBs. And, of course, the answer is yes that Brady can exploit those things. I mean, didn't we know that Vernon Davis was the guy to stop for the Giants vs. 49ers. And even though the G-men did a nice job, Davis still burned them for 2 TDs. The ought part for the Patriots - especially on an indoor turf - will be blocking a very deep and talented D-line.

the DCHAV (Wuxi, China)

Hey Mort. Not a pressing matter in relation to the Super Bowl but I've been very curious to why Peyton Manning hasn't been talked more about as an option for the Ravens. I know teams can do a whole lot worse than Flacco but I think they can do a whole lot better too. Plus it would be the great story line of the greatest Colt quarterback ever returning to the city the Colts came from to lead a team of grizzly veterans on one final ride? Your thoughts?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:09 AM)

Look, any team that doesn't have an elite QB or a young guy they believe in would have a discussion about Peyton Manning. But he has to be healthy and is that going to be March (I doubt it), April? May? June? How much money? How it will it impact the salary cap? It will be a fascination story if he does get healthy enough to play and he's not a Colt. I would say the Redskins and Dolphins will be the most aggressive teams and the favorites if he is free.

Steve (Cincinnati)

Who are you hearing are the top performing players at the Senior Bowl this week?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:11 AM)

I didn't make it to Mobile for the Senior Bowl this week so the only question I asked of some coaches and personnel people was quarterback-related. Heard very good things about Kirk Cousins (Michigan St) and, for some Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma St) but it's early.

K Munsey (Ramstein Germany)

Hi, I am a life long Miami fan and I want to know who you think they have the best chance to get QB wise for next season

Chris Mortensen
  (11:13 AM)

I think the Dolphins will be determined to get: 1. Peyton Manning; 2. Matt Flynn; 3. Robert Griffin III...

Mark (Harrisburg, PA)

Status on the Dolphin's coordinators?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:16 AM)

It's no secret now that Joe Philbin would love to hire Mike Sherman as his OC but he looks like possible favorite with Bucs (2nd interview today) with Rod Chudzinski (Panthers) in that Bucs' mix, too. I don't know who the fallback on offense is. I think the Bengals secondary Kevin Coyle is the favorite for the DC job with Jaguars LB coach Mark Duffner a candidate for asst. head coach/defense. Philbin is going through a process for these jobs.

Rob (San Antonio)

Were you surprised Bruce Arians was let go and do you know of anyone Pgh. has in mind for the job?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:19 AM)

I wasn't surprised on Arians but I know Roethlisberger was disappointed. I would look for Arians to land somewhere like Arizona as QB coach or some position on offense. The Steelers likely would have promoted RB coach Kirby Wilson but you are aware that he has a long recovery ahead from the severe burns he suffered on Jan. 6 in a house fire. There's talk that QB coach Randy Fichtner and O-line coach Sean Kugler could share those duties with Fichtner likely being the play-caller.

Richard (CAPE COD)

hi Mort, why are Pats 3 pt. favorites, Giants beat them in Foxboro, and just beat Pack and Niners on the road, it should be even or Giants fav by 3....thnak you,

Chris Mortensen
  (11:20 AM)

I think this is all about Vegas trying to see where the money is going to flow and then adjust. Isn't that what they do? The consensus I get around the country and in the league is that the Giants will be the pick.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Mort, Do you agree with Gil Brandt that Ryan Tannehill may end up being a TOP 10 pick in the draft?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:22 AM)

I know that Tannehill is very much on some team's radars but his foot injury may hurt the pre-draft process. And for a guy who was a converted WR, teams will wants as much data as possible. One of the QBs will slip into that 3 spot behind Luck and Griffin and that usually means he will be taken higher than projected.

Jason (Bay Area)

With Allen coming in as the new HC of DA Raiders!!! Who are some candidates for the OC and DC?? Thx Mort!!!

Chris Mortensen
  (11:25 AM)

Well, here's the name again: Mike Sherman. GM Reggie McKenzie certainly would recommend someone like Sherman because they worked together in Green Bay and it's always good to have a former head coach on staff. Another name is Gregg Knapp, now the QB coach for the Texans who probably has grown even more after spending a couple of years with Gary Kubiak and Rick Dennison. On defense, I'm not sure but Allen will certainly oversee it.

Sue D (Denver)

How likely is that Del Rio will the Denver's next DC? And will that positively affect the defense?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:27 AM)

I believe Del Rio would be a candidate. John Fox is very well acquainted with Jack but I don't know if Del Rio will be the guy. He ould promote from within - Fox is also a defensive guy. The loss of Allen is a tough one. Champ Bailey and other quality defenders were extremely impressed with Allen.

T. Cook (Lakemont, Gergia)

Hi-what are you hearing about the Bucs filling their head coach position? Any name coaches or another assistant like Rasheed Morris?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:28 AM)

Maybe there's another surprise candidate but people in the league believe this may be down to Mike Sherman vs. Rob Chudzinski (Panthers OC).

Jeff (Little Rock)

Why wouldn't someone try and make a trade with the Patriots for Ryan Mallet? It seems like more than half the teams in the league need an option at QB.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:30 AM)

I think Mallett in a trade scenario is possible but backup QB Brian Hoyer is scheduled to be a free agent so the price won't be cheap and having Mallett as the #2 may be part of the plan in 2012.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Mort, Do you think we will ever see Marty Schottenheimer as a head coach in the NFL again?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:31 AM)

Mikey again.... I thought the Bucs were his best shot but it looks like he has not made the final cut so it looks like Marty will not get another shot. Too bad. I think some teams have missed out by not pursuing him.

Jeffrey (Flroida)

Do you expect Tim Tebow to improve his passing substantially during the off-season?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:32 AM)

I expect him to improve but substantially seems iffy. But let's see how the off-season goes and the results will show in the pre-season.

Rob (San Antonio)

So what happened to Ochocinco in New England?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:33 AM)

I believe Chad, in his most honest moment, would tell you that he had no idea that it would take so long to grasp the mental side of the Patriots offense.

John.C (Bethlaham Park,NY)

Who do you think the Rams should take with the 2nd overall pick? Justin Blackmon/Matt Kalil/ Trade out?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:35 AM)

If I could get some multiple picks and/or a player or two by someone trading up to get RG3, that's what I would so. Otherwise, unless Blackmon has a Calvin Johnson-like grade, I would take Matt Kalil - a surefire All-Pro caliber left tackle which would allow the Rams to move Roger Saffold and strengthen the overall line.

alan (chicago)

word is mario williams is most likely not going back to the texans. Any chance he comes to the bears to play opposite peppers?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:36 AM)

I would be surprised if the Texans don't find a way to keep Williams but they do have a lot of talent and showed they could win without him. But the Texans can be a Super Bowl favorite in 2012 with Williams. If he is free, watch out. It won't just be the Bears will will pay the bug bucks to get him.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:37 AM)

Now I have to run to NFL32 conference call. NFL32 weekdays at 6ET (ESPN2) and we will be talking about all NFL teams during Super Bowl week. Sunday Countdown at 10:30 a.m. this week. God Bless!
