Hello everyone and welcome back to the Wednesday edition of Mavs chat with your host, Jeff Caplan... So Mavs have won 4 in a row and are 6-0 without the services of either Jason Kidd or Dirk Nowitzki. What does it mean? Championship rings will be delivered tonight before the game with T'Wolves. What does that mean? Let's find out.
Oops...meant Mavs are going for a fourth win in a row tonight..Ok, now on to the questions...
So far what's your opinion of the level Roddy B has showed lately? I think he has become the guy Carlisle wants, not spectacular but a player who can contribute his defense has been pretty solid.
Jaime,I think you are seeing a player that has finally regained full strength in his left foot and leg and, very importantly, he is regaining his confidence in his foot. His game is predicated on attacking the rim. The Mavs have plenty of guys to shoot 3s, but a guy that can get in the lane is oh so valuable. When Roddy plays at a high level he can be an effective and creative attacker as well as a dangerous player on defense. I think all these things are starting to come together. He was away from basketball for a long time with the foot injury.
Who is the Best Head Coach in Dallas Mavericks History?
Good question, Chris. I'll go with Rick Carlisle since he's the guy that won the championship and did it with a team few believed could or would. Dirk Motta obviously got close in the 80s, Don Nelson brought this franchise back from the dead and Avery Johnson took it to it first NBA Finals. But, give me Carlisle. Remember, at Carlisle's first two coaching stops, Detoit and Indiana, he took both to the East finals.
Afternoon Jeff! You opinion of the Brendan/Mahinimi situation! You see it remaining the same for PT or is Mahinimi emerging as the better option? How do you see Mahinimi performing for rest of season? Thanks alot
Hey David, what else is there to say about the Haywood/Mahinmi situation other than to say my jaw is on the ground. What a season so far for Ian. He is showing incredible mobility, great hands and a soft, soft touch to score the ball close to the rim and stepping out with a mid-range J. Pretty impressive. Haywood has been solid, too. In fact, I can't remember a time when the Mavs went down low to him or any other center as much as they are to Haywood. If only he had Mahinmi's hands and touch. Now, as far as minutes, look, both are averaging about the same, Haywood at 21 and Ian a little more than 20. Haywood will stay the starter , there's no reason to upset the apple cart there, and really why would you?
Jeff what are your thoughts on the design of the Mavs' championship rings?http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/692/39661032122024228081198.jpg/sr=1
Good looking right? And for $40,000 a piece, they better be.
Are the current standings the best predictor of how good the teams are currently?
Nish, good question. this is such a bizarre season that you don't know what to trust. there have been so many blowouts across the league and teams playing a fourth game in 5 nights and three in a row, etc., it's hard to analyze individual games and what they mean. So, saying that, a team's record is what it is, but I don't think it suggests how good a team might be come April.
Let's say Orlando decides to not trade D12 before the deadline and run the risk of seeing walk away at the end of the season, is Dallas the only team on his list of preferred destinations that can offer him the max? In other words, couldn't say the Clippers also sign him?...
Don, good question. I sure find it hard to believe Orlando will hold onto Howard if he doesn't give assurance that he'll stay, but that is an option that is rumored...so, if he does get to free agency, the Mavs will have room to offer a max deal (they'd have to get rid of more salary to accommodate D12 and Deron Williams)...Now, other teams he has on his list are the Lakers, Nets and Clippers (at least we think). Take the Lakers off that list immediately. They will not have cap room. The Nets will have plenty. The Clippers would have to dump some salary, but it is possible they could add Howard as well. Although it would be tough for them moving forward if they had Howard, Griffin, Paul and Jordan all signed to big deals.
is peja getting his ring tonight
Tom, Yes, Peja, who is now retired, will be at the AAC tonight for the ring ceremony. JJ Barea will also be there. Mark Cuban, in a show of class, planned the ceremony for tonight so JJ could attend. The other title team members now on other teams will not be here tonight.
Tim MacMahon couldn't answer my question, maybe because he doesn't use critical thinking. So I'll turn to the expert. It seems over the past few games that he Mavs have shot well in the first quarter of games, shooting around 52% but as the game goes on they drop down to 40%. What's the reason behind that?
Shawn, you are right, lately the Mavs have shot well in the first quarter and then the average dips to 41 percent. It's a strange trend and one Carlisle might have to answer. I mean is it that the reserves come in and shoot poorly? Well, we know Jet has been cold of late, Odom has not shot well, Carter has been out. I don't know a scientific answer to tell you other than that maybe the early hot shooting is the aberration. This team has been shooting around 43 percent as a team for basically the entire season.
This time not a S Williams question although I still think he should get playing time. Trade Odom(whose value is still high) for Gerald Wallace. Dallas gets a true SF to play with Marion and Portland get great all around player that helps them when Aldrigde play at 5 . Deal done?
Sahar, Nice try but that's not going to happen. Odom's contract next season is non-guaranteed, so he can easily be bought out. Gerald Wallace, who Dallas has had chances to trade for in the past and hasn't, is due $9.5 million next season. It is a player option for Wallace, but of course he is going to exercise it because he won't make more as a free agent. Plus, give Odom some time. At some point, he's got to come around.
Jeff,Word from you guys is that Dirk may sit even longer than 4 games. If you had to guess, does he play against San Antonio?
Joseph, I can't believe you are the first one to ask about Dirk and his injury/lack of conditioning. I wish I could give you an exact answer, but I really have no clue when he will be back. I know he will want to play Sunday against the Spurs, so we'll see if that happens. Dirk is expected to talk to reporters after tomorrow's practice to provide an update, so hopefully we'll know more then.
Jeff do you know if the Mavericks will be giving away championship ring replicas just like the Rangers did this past year?
Roy, I don't know. But, Jason Terry is buying a duplicate ring that he is going to raffle off for his foundation. Tickets will be $10.I think there's more info at jasonterryfoundation.org.
Do you see the Mavs making any kind of moves to maybe get J.R. Smith (when he can come back from China) or make some sort of trade that would also keep them flexible for this coming summer, but maybe give them a spark?
Casey, wow, I hope not. That's one guy I don't need in the Mavs' tranquil locker room. What does J.R. really provide other than erratic 3-point shooting. You've already got Jet, who is not nearly the head case, is a much better team player and these days really tries hard to play good defense. Not sure why you'd want J.R.
How much more time should Dirk get in order to get back in game shape?
Kris, only answer I can give there is as much as he needs. this is such an odd situation. I don't know how a sore knee gets better with a week of training-camp style workouts. But, hey, I trust the Mavs' coaching and training staff, so we will see.
So what's going on with Vince? Is he slated to return soon?
Jon...He has a sprained mid-foot that could keep him out a bit longer. Minnesota's Michael Beasley has the same/similar injury and he will miss his 11th straight game tonight.Carter will be missing game no. 5. He said yesterday that it's still difficult to flex his foot and he's not really doing any running. So, it could be a bit longer. Plus, the mavs aren't going to rush him back.
Del Potro, Is it that obvious? I don't know, I think they have been OK. I mean over the last 15 games Mavs giving up on avg 84 points and I don't points in the paint has been terrible. Now, their rebounding has been suspect and could be improved. I think Mavs have been quite pleased with the Haywood/Mahinmi defensive effort. Early on they tried to address it by signing Sean Williams, but he's stuck in the D-League. Brandan Wright is getting a little run and Yi is a project.
Hi Jeff, Its pretty obvious that the Mavs have no interior defense specially that Tyson is gone. Are the Mavs would re-inforce that middle hole and how would they address it?
Sorry for answering you, Del Potro, before I posted your question. Hope that was clear.
I read the "5 on 5" today and Royce Young says The Thunder are the clear favorites. (I agree) Then he said, "who will challenge? Nuggets, Clippers, Lakers, GRIZZLIES, Spurs?". That was a clear shot at The Mavs (A team that last at their house off of a buzzer beater 3 and a team that handed them a nice loss) So my question... Do you, as a writer, ever take jabs at other teams, like Royce Young does?
Jason, that's funny, so you think Royce is a Mavs hater? I tend to think maybe he just forgot about the Mavs. Look, the West is crazy this season, totally wide open. Memphis has come on strong and will eventually get big Zach Randolph back so I really like that team with Rudy Gay. I think the Mavs can compete with anyone, and I think it does say a lot that even re-tooled early on two of their best games came against the Thunder. I still don't trust OKC in late-game situations. But, athletically and in terms of sheer talent, yes, they are the favorite.
OK, another 35 minutes has come and gone. Thanks so much for participating. Remember to check espndallas.com for constantly updated Mavs news. We'll have it all from the AAC tonight, from the ring ceremony to the postgame locker room. Chuck Cooperstein, voice of the Mavs is up tomorrow. See you next week. Thanks again and pass along espndallas.com.
