Hello everyone, let's get started
Who will be the First USC Player to Be Selected in the 2012 NFL Draft?
Most people still feel Murphy is Stanford's to lose. Is that the impression you get too?
All indications are that the USC visit went very well for Murphy and the Trojans definitely picked up some ground on Stanford. It remains to be seen if they gained enough ground but Murphy said the SC visit was more than he expected. The Trojans put Matt Barkley as his host on part of the trip.
Who does USC have a better shot at landing, Peat or Murphy? Are the both long shots or realistic options?
Both are going to be tough but USC is definitely in it for both guys. Murphy is SC-Stanford, he told Greg Biggins after his SC visit that it's 50-50 and we've got no reason to doubt that. Peat seems to be Nebraska, Stanford and SC, maybe even in that order. It's hard to tell on Andrus, he's kept things very close to the vest in recruiting and it really wouldn't shock me if he ended up at any of the three schools on his list.
Garry, Any idea when Nelson Agholor might announce his decision?
Nelson is scheduled to announce on signing day on ESPNU
Do you see USC getting any defensive line commitments?
I think it's enough of a priority that it will happen, I just don't know who it will be. Tyriq McCord is an option, even though he is a verbal to Miami. Leonard Williams would be a good get, plus the coaches have Shanks coming in this weekend so you never know what can happen. And then there is Arik Armstead, Kiffin has an in-home on Thursday night so there is still some kind of hope on that.
Hey Garry! With all of the changes going on in the Pac 12 close to signing day, recruits are second guessing their decisions. We really need interior d-lineman in this class, who do you think signs next week?
I think that's the hardest spot to predict because none of the remaining players on the wish list are really leaning to SC at this point. The five main d-linemen still in play are Shittu, Williams, McCord, Armstead and Shanks.
As usual, lots of rumors flying about the Armsteads. For awhile, the odds of them being at USC were miniscule, but momentum seems to be moving in the opposite direction. Do you think we're back to having a legitimate shot? Any truth to the one year from May with no relapses for clearance rumor on Armond? Thanks Garry.
There's a shot. i don't know where it is in terms of being legitimate but there is a shot. The fact is that Arik hasn't committed anywhere else yet (as was his original plan) and he doesn't seem to have fallen in love with any other school. In the meantime, Armond has yet to be cleared anywhere else (as far as we know) and he is enrolling back at SC to take grad classes. When you add all that up, I wouldn't rule out Kiffin making a real solid run at Arik on Thursday and making a good impression.
Any possible decommits from the current committed players?
Pio Vatuvei (Utah, Washington and Cal) and Darreus Rogers (ASU) have both indicated that other schools are still possibilities.
Does USC have a good chance with Cyler Miles?
I wouldn't call it a good chance. He said this week that Washington is still his likely destination and that he committed there for a reason. We'll see, it's never over until it's over. Kiffin still has an in-home with Miles.
Garry, Is there a chance we can get some commits before signing day and if so who?
Sure. D.J. Foster announces on Friday and Zach Banner announces on Monday. Foster is down to USC, ASU or Cal (I think it will be either USC or ASU) while Banner has USC, Washington and Oklahoma as his final three (my guess is the Trojans).
Any update on Hiva Lutui?
Hiva ruled out USC and will likely head to either Utah or BYU.
Garry, Any news on DJ Foster and where do you see he going after all?
D.J. announces on Friday and I think it's down to USC vs ASU. I could see this one going either way. I think he understands the favorable depth chart at USC for his position but ASU offers a strong hometown pull.
With USC going after Kyle Murphy, Andreas Peat and Zack Banner do you think some of the recruits are sitting and waiting to see who signs and who doesn't before making there decision?
I think we're past that point in the process. The vast majority of the guys who wait until the end (including all three you mentioned) are good enough that the schools will hold scholarships for them no matter what. It's not so much a matter of them worrying about other guys, it's more about them making sure they are making the right choice for them. Don't get me wrong, there are times when another decision could play a factor, if two of those three offensive tackles commit to USC I doubt the third guy would continue to consider the Trojans.
Who is planning to visit this weekend?
Bryce Treggs will visit on Thursday. Over the weekend, the guys scheduled right now are Tyriq McCord, Justin Shanks and Nelson Agholor. Obviously that list could change between now and Friday.
Is Bryce Treggs scheduled to visit this weekend and/or coaches still working on it? Obviously there was worry with Dareus Rogers earlier in the week, but think him participating in the throwing session and tweeting with RW afterward showed where his heart is at?
Yes, Bryce is still scheduled to visit but it will be a Thursday visit before he heads to Cal this weekend. In regards to Rogers, I did find it telling that he was there. I'm taking that as a positive sign for the Trojans. USC will also trip in Agholor this weekend, another receiver.
Garry, looking toward next year, who are the top local talents... I'm wondering mostly about Wide Receiver, Running Back, Safety, Corners and Defensive Ends... Anyone Kiffin is really already after?
3 good RB's in area for some early names to watch; Lee from Redlands, Green from St Bonaventure and Newby from Chaminade. Best player around is LB Sua Cravens from Vista Murrieta, USC has offered and is considered a strong favorite. Real good year for local safeties too; Redfield from Mission Viejo, Price from LB Poly and Foreman from Crespi are early standouts.
Garry, we're a week from signing day and I'm worried. Two weeks in hosting recruits on campus and no one new has committed. Should Trojan nation be concerned?
I wouldn't be worried. There aren't many spots left to fill and there is still plenty of available bodies out there. Most of the guys left on the SC list have been pretty up front about saying they were going to wait until the end so it's not a huge surprise that we didn't see any verbals.
Who do you think are the 5 non-committed recruits that SC is most likely to sign?
Agholor and Banner are my two best bets. After that it gets a little tricky. I think the most likely players to fill out the remaining three spots are; 1) Murphy or Peat, 2) MrCord, 3) Shittu or Williams
Heard that Kyle Murphy is now 50-50 about Stanford and USC? U think Coach Kiffin and close the deal?
I think Kiffin did what he needed to do last weekend, he gave Murphy something to think about. If USC hadn't impressed him so much on the visit, I think he was ready in his mind to end the process and go with Stanford. Now he is saying it's 50-50 and those around him believe he is torn. We will know on Friday if USC did enough.
An offer from USC seems like a piece of gold with the scholarship sanctions. I know we have a week left, but why are we having such a difficult time getting to 15 commits?
I think one of the reasons is because of that exact number, 15. It's important to get the right 15 and it's equally important not to get caught short at the end of signing day with only 13 or 14 commits. These are peculiar factors for this year with the coaches due to the sanctions. Let's see how this plays out over the next week, this staff has shown a pretty good ability to close in the right way over the years.
Gary,Any truth retgarding Jessir Scruggins having academic issues?
Those rumors are out there but I can't confirm them since USC doesn't talk about academic status of players. The rumors increase when Jesse is a no-show at winter throwing events too.
Is Jabari Ruffin a speedster LB in the Pullard-Bailey mold? Or is he more of a power player?
I wouldn't call him a "speedster" but Jabari moves plenty fast. At 230, he's already bigger than either of those guys. He's got an ideal frame for an outside linebacker and I think he'll fit in great with that group.
Who's the 3rd WR (first off the bench) next year? Farmer, Flournoy, Blackwell?
Right now I would say Farmer, Blackwell, Flournoy but the battle between Farmer and Blackwell should be fun to watch. Both guys appear ready to go.
The name WeAreSC bothers me because every time I read it that stupid Farmer's Insurance song pops into my head...
haha. I never thought of that one before but now I'm sure I will think of it when I see the commercial.
Why is Kiffin pursuing QB prospect Cyler Miles? Don't we have a backlog at quarterback already? Shouldn't he save the slot for a D lineman or running back?
I agree with you that it raises a flag when he all of a sudden Kiffin is making a run at a QB, especially when rumors pop up at the same time about possible academic issues with one of his QB's. If he is trying to bring one in, he must really think he needs to.
Speaking of D Linemen, how good is Arik Armstead on that side of the ball? Who would you compare him too etc? Any way you could give me an arbitrary epsn rating? (Shittu = 80)
He's really, really good on defense. That gets lost sometimes when people fawn all over his potential on offense (including me). I think he could be all-world on the o-line but I do think he could have a huge impact on the d-line too. Not many 6-7, 280 guys who can move like him so there aren't a ton of comparisons to make.
In my opinion, Arik Armstead waiting until signing day is very beneficial for the Trojans. Would you agree and where do you see him landing?? Also Rogers is going to decommit! I really hope we get algholor or we are not going to be very deep at our skill positions (wr and rb)! Thoughts on the wr position? Thank you very much!
I do look at it that way with Armstead. At the very least, it's more of a shot than the Trojans had two weeks ago when both Arik and his brother said they were headed elsewhere. Now at least Kiffin gets an in-home to make one final push. I think Rogers sticks with his SC commit and I think Agholor comes too. In the end, the USC wide receivers produce under Kiffin and that should be enough to attract these guys.
Who, if anyone are we most likely to flip from another school to come to USC?
Cyler Miles is the hot candidate right now. He's been a commit to Washington for a long time but SC has made a late run and he is listening.
Is it just an odd coincidence that the big picks needed to round out the recruiting for USC are all holdouts?
I think so. Recruiting goes in cycles.
What's up Garry! I'm really intrigued by what you guys are doing over there at SC. Fight On!!! Any word on how the Armstead home visit went with coach Kiffin?
The Kiffin in-home visit is Thursday. By the way coach, your last name is spelled Neuheisel.
Peat, Banner, Murphy -- which one helps the most the soonest; which one has the biggest upside.
wow, tough question. These are three elite prospects we're talking about here so I don't want it to seem like we're nitpicking. For biggest sheer upside, I would say Murphy. In terms of the best chance of helping right away, I might go with Banner.
Aside from Pio V, Shittu, and Shanks who else is SC recruiting to play DL? Is this a position of need? Thanks
Huge position of need. Leonard Williams took a visit last weekend and USC has an in-home with Arik Armstead tomorrow so there is still some kind of chance on that one.
GP, can you describe the dynamics of what actually happens at Heritage Hall on signing day? When do the LOIs actually go out to the potential signees? Is all the staff present in the football office, with two or three cell phones each, plus a half dozen fax machines, and four TV monitors watching stations from around the country? Is there a huge whiteboard filled with contingency plans and things get crossed off every five minutes as various recruits announce their plans?
it's a lot like how you describe. The letters go out in the days before signing day. The faxes can be sent in at 7am local time for the recruit so Pete Carroll was famous for sleeping in his office to be there for the east coast faxes which would come in at 4am USC time. Coaches are working the phones throughout the day, they are monitoring the televised reports, they have staffers checking the internet. There is a "war room" board that showcases players being considered at each position. it's not a whiteboard, it has a marker for each recruit and those markers are adjusted on the board as players commit either to SC or elsewhere.
Does it look like Bowman will qualify as an early enrolle?
As of yesterday he said compliance didn't allow him to take part in the throwing session so apparently something is still being held up.
More from the Devil, Foster stays in AZ, who do we get as RB? I read the Pinner article, seems like a good idea to have him play both spots. Regardless, are there any other RBs on the radar?
no other running back candidates are known. Byron Marshall said he is sticking with Oregon, there was some speculation he might be in play a few days ago when the Kelly to the Bucs story was out there.
Believe it or not, a non recruiting question! Any position changes you predict/could see happening? I've heard so much about Pomee's size and nastiness, any chance we see him in the backfield next year?
I don't doubt we could see a few of the tight ends get reps in an h-back, fullback type of spot. There is still some consideration for the possibility of moving Dion Bailey back to safety.
What benefit would we get in having a QB in this class? Barkely, Scroggins, Kessler and Wittek can't play at the same time. Wouldn't it be best to save a scholarship on a better QB prospect for next year.
If all four of those players are on the roster next year, i agree that it would probably make sense to use one of the 15 rides at another spot. The fact that Kiffin is now going after a quarterback, after not showing much interest in a QB for a long time, is definitely noticeable.
Agholor looks like he is going to be a Trojan... any other oos recruits looking as positive?
I think you could put Banner on that list.
USC seems to be targeting a lot of o-lineman, is this part of their plan and wil the target more skill players nexy year?
this is a great year for o-line talent on the west coast so it makes sense to load up as much as possible. If USC can't get more d-linemen in this class then DL would be a huge priority next year. There will always be skill players in So Cal.
What do you think SC's chances are to get Davante Neal?
Where/when can we watch any USC recruit announcements?
Andrus Peat and Nelson Agholor are announcing on ESPNU on signing day.
With the running back depth slim, do you see any players on the current roster getting a look during Spring bs;;?
no but I wouldn't rule out Jahleel Pinner getting a look there in the fall
thanks everyone for coming. I'm sorry if we didn't get to your questions. We will do this again next week.
