Hello everyone, thanks for all your questions. I am just about to get Dave on the line.
Thanks for joining us. We've been waiting to refresh the rankings and anxiously released them all as of today.
Explain the ranking of Kansas' recruits. What made you move up Perry Ellis, Andrew White, move Landen Lucas to 4*, and move Zach Peters to 3*. Also, why didn't Anrio Adams move up much? The schools that offered him seem to indicate he's underrated? Is it lack of seeing him?
Perry Ellis is a good player. As we poured over the lists looking for small separators, it was clear he's a guy that is comfortable as a scorer. I think he'll wind up being a three-year starter for Kansas. White got a little bump because of his attention to detail rebounding the ball. Peters is a good role guy and Lucas was literally the last cut from the 100. Thought we had Adams evaluated properly since the summer. As for the schools that "offered" him. That's typically not a good way to evaluate a prospect and the information is not always valid.
where do you think d. pollard ends up?
Devonta Pollard visited Texas last weekend. I think Mississippi State is a big player for him as well. My guess is, until told differently, Starkville would be a strong player.
What are your thoughts on Butler recruits Kellen Dunham and Nolan Berry? Also, is Butler actively recruiting a big man for 2013 class?
Kellen Dunham is elite at shooting the ball. Take a cruise around college basketball. Those guys aren't sitting on the bench. If you can make shots, they'll teach you how to team defend but the reality is you play. Like Nolan Berry and he was in our Super 60 last time but didn't make it this time. When we go to 100, he makes the cut.
Ray Lee went from 17 best PG to 24th, whats the reason for his decline?
Joe, Ray Lee found some trouble off the court. That factors into situations. You have to be better than your problems.
Dave,Can you comment on just how good Jordan Burgess of Benedictine High School in Richmond is going to be for VCU next year? For those who do not know, he is the younger brother of current VCU Ram and senior captain Bradford Burgess.
Jordan Burgess is a player. He scored a last minute invite to NBA Top 100 Camp last summer and looked like he belonged. He's ahead of Brad at same stage and is nastier. I expect him to play as a freshman and eventually develop into VCU's go-to guy but that will take time. Freshmen don't tend to have HUGE impacts for upper tier teams in the CAA because the best teams are laced with older players.
Can Mike Gesell move up any more? what is holding him back?
Jack, I think we have Mike Gesell accurately evaluated and rated. As a true combo guard, I love him. Wouldn't be surprised to see him play PG full time. Selfless kid and is consummate team guy. Smooth transition to college is expected.
What do you envision Adam woodburys production next year as a freshman?
Van Meter, Adam Woodbury must -- let me say this clearly: MUST -- find the weight room. Iowa needs him to play as a freshman. He has to be able to power thru and finish with contact in the Big Ten. In that league, they hit you with baseball bats en route to the rim. If he does that, I firmly believe he will be a pillar for the Hawkeyes.
Was curious if Amedeo Della Valle of Findlay Prep doesn't make the ESPNU Top 100, or if he is does, why is he being left of the list? Also roughly where would you put him, if he belongs in the Top 100?
Amedeo Della Valle wasn't a serious contender for the 100. Saw him last week and will see him again. Might be the setting because a scout I know, Mike Procopio of HoopConsultants, feels like he's going to be an outstanding college player.
Is there any chance that Syracuse lands Amile Jefferson? And if so, where would Cuse rank for next years class if they got him?
Mike, Amile Jefferson is no longer listing Syracuse. For whatever reason, Syracuse fans seem to feel like they're in there which is surprising. NC State, Villanova, Duke, Connecticut, Kentucky and Ohio State definitely are, but Cuse? Don't think so.
Do you think Yogi Ferrell could turn out to be the best point guard from this class?
Jordan, it's possible. There's a part of the extreme Indiana fans that seem to think we don't value him enough and that's fine. The deal with Yogi is simple; can he find the balance between scoring and being a playmaker. If he does that, then to answer your question, he could end up that way.
Hey Dave, please answer! What are the Golden Gophers' chances of landing 2014 top 5 recruit Tyus Jones? Thanks!
Nils, thanks for the note. No need to beg, I'm here for you man! Tyus Jones is the best PURE point guard in HS basketball. Love him. His presence reminds me of (gulp) CP3. Mike Krzyzewski feels the same way and therein lies your competition. Gophers and Blue Devils I bet tangle. Good news is, last time you tangled you got Kris Humphries. Bad news is ... you got Kris Humphries for a year and he bounced quickly.
What do you make of Chris Thomas landing at Chipola?
Brian, Chris Thomas is at Chipola because of his academic resume I believe. For starters, he's got to grow accustomed to doing the schoolwork and embrace the structure. He's been like a rubber ball bouncing around. I sincerely hope this gives him stability because he's an excellent scorer with a big ceiling.
Duke's lone commitment right now is Rasheed Sulaimon, but there are rumors they are now the front-runners for Amile Jefferson. Would getting Jefferson hurt Duke's chances for Shabazz Muhammad, and what are the chances Shabazz goes to Durham anyway?
Duke's wishlist is Shabazz, Shabazz and then Tony Parker and Amile Jefferson. I don't think Muhammad and Amile will play the same position and therefore don't see one affecting the other.
Do you think the Clippers continue their dominance over the Lakers tonight??
Deano, I've always been a big Clippers fan ... yeah, right. Without CP3, they lose to the Lakers.
How does Perea go down that much? The knock had always been he wasn't developing, but not he's shown significant developements, why did he drop so much?
Hanner Parea is going to help Indiana but it won't be as a consistent scorer. He's a jumbo athlete who can run the floor and send back shots. I didn't think he developed enough on the court to go much higher than where we have him.
why isn't Dominic Artis notin the top25
Stanley, I think Dominic Artis has been on a tear since the summer. We moved him up and the big reason why is his ball value. He's making better decisions and frankly, we trust him more to efficiently run the team. Why isn't he in the Top 25? Simple: he's not a Top 25 player.
How many Mcdonald's All Americans do you think Arizona will get Dave?
If Arizona doesn't get two McDonald's AA we need to ask for a recount. Brandon Ashley and Grant Jerrett deserve it. Kaleb (Ivan Drago) Tarczewski isn't eligible per 5th year. Gabe York is good but I think has a tough time cracking team.
How impressed are you with Dave Rice so far and any reason to believe he wont continue recruiting very well here in vegas?
I said on "The Experts" yesterday that there is a buzz about UNLV that hasn't been there in years. Dave Rice, with the help of staffers like Justin Hudson, is making great recruiting strides. They're relevant nationally again.
How things going Dave, with all the talk of the c/0 '13 top tier talent with parker, noel and randleand other talented underclassmen (Wiggins etc) I was wondering if ESPN will do a top 100 players regardless of class ranking,
Aaron, in the coming days we're going to come up with a Top 25 players regardless of class.
What do you think of Dayton's class of Devon Scott, Jalen Robinso and the PG Jevon Thomas. All three guys are Big East Decommits. Have you had an opportunity to see them play? If so Id love to hear your analysis
It's a good group of guys for sure. Here's my area of concern. That many kids de-committing brings into question their ability to stay in one place. They are talented guys but like any de-commitment, it makes you nervous. Three of them is something to watch closely. Hopefully those kids will invest more in Dayton's program than their own interests and allow themselves to be coached by Archie Miller. BTW, hello Archie Miller. Not too shabby for the first-year skipper.
Why did Torian Graham drop so far?
Torian Graham dropped because for the third year in a row something's happened at school where he had to leave. Torian, IMO is talented enough to be a Top 25 player. However, part of the evaluation is how you conduct yourself, how reliable you are and your ability to be a productive player. Torian has work to do in order to play college basketball. I sincerely hope he finds what he's looking for and gets on the right path.
I've been following your rankings for awhile, love the job you do. Syracuse has brought in some strong classes since they built the Melo Center, any word on who they're in the running for in the 2013 class?
Jeff, if Syracuse can add one guy in 2013 it would be this man: Nerlens Noel. Primary object of Syracuse's junior recruiting attention.
Watching Jabari live i think Randle and Noel have more of an nba upside then Jabari even Shabazz, thoughts?
Tom, one could successfully argue that Nerlens has more NBA upside based mainly on his ability to impact a game defensively. Either he or Parker would be No. 1 if they were in 2012.
Dave-Valentine and Costello: How much have you seen them? They should be top 50 IMHO
Cousinofsparty, love your passion. Through your green lenses, I can appreciate where you're coming from. However, Costello is a solid not great athlete who owns his area. Valentine is the intangibles guy who Izzo will fall in love with from Day One. Top 100, not Top 50 IMHO.
Mitch McGary at 21? Whats going on? Effort gone down, other players getting better?
Stan, our fall and winter evaluations of Mitch McGary don't match what we saw prior. I think we were a little aggressive with his rating and that's on us. However, Mitch hasn't brought the same intensity and that's on him. Make no mistake, he's a good player but closer to 21 than 2 at this stage.
How good is Sam Dekker? future pro possibly?
I would think that Sam Dekker would have a shot on the back end of his career at being the Big Ten player of the year. As far as pro career, I'd be surprised if he doesn't earn money. He has a skill set and the requisite toughness to make it work.
When is the Carolina Challenge? How many kids did you invite this year?
The Carolina Challenge is March 24 at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh. It's for the 80 top prospects (2013, 14, 15) who play in the state of North Carolina.
why are you so down on negus webster chan? at one point he was in to top 60. I have seen him play a lot while he was in toronto and now in huntington. He seems to be playing the point well and has a good handle for his size and can knock down the 3.
Troy, Negus Webster Chan was projected as a big point when he was in our Top 60. That's no longer the case. he's a shooting guard who still needs to polish up all aspects of his game.
With the emergence of Mike Tobey and Evan Nolte, is Justin Anderson still the jewel of Tony Bennett's class at UVa?
Virginia's class is very good because of the sum of the parts. If I could only take one guy it would be Evan Nolte because he's the best scorer. Justin Anderson has the biggest ceiling. I've always thought that if he can strike the proper balance between his perimeter shot and work he does in the lane he'll make a jump. Mike Tobey's efforts have been sporadic in HS. Bottom line is he has the tools to be a legit post scorer in the ACC.
A lot of the talk about Zach Peters amongst KU fans is that he is underrated due to not playing AAU ball after committing to KU, and thus not being evaluated. Is there any truth to that? Or have you guys been able to truly evaluate his talent?
We've seen Zach Peters a lot. He's a guy who isn't a great athlete so he has to do it with his smarts (which he has) and toughness (he's shown). Bottom line is lack of athleticism limits him but he'll find a way to play because he's that kind of a kid. He'll work for his chances.
Does UConn add anyone to their one man class?
UConn always can be counted on for a late signee. They're on Amile Jefferson and continue calling on the best available wing players. Problem is there aren't many available the are good enough
How do you feel about John Calipari getting either Anthony Bennett or Shabazz in this next class? Would this give him another #1 rated class?
Landing eiher Shabazz or Anthony Bennett would put them over the top for the No. 1 class. We'd have to bring in our guru Brendan "The Czar" Nolan to crunch the numbers. Land them both and neither you or I will have to do the math.
Who are the best available big guys and where do you think they will land?
Anthony Bennett, Tony Parker, Chris Obekpa, Amile Jefferson, Ricardo Gathers are all available bigs in the ESPNU 100.
Running out of time I really would like a question to be answered! Whats the trick?! Is Syracuse in the running for any other top recruits? Can Dajuan Coleman be an instant impact player? Thanks!
Nick, I think DaJuan Coleman is a good player. It's reasonable to think he plays a lot as a freshman but nothing will be handed to him. He has inherent advantages because he's a better scorer than Melo in the paint and has a good feel for the game. His conditioning must improve (it will or a strength coach will be in hot water).
Folks, thanks a ton for spending time with us today. It's been a long month and we've been busy. I hope I passed along some information, answered your questions and entertained you. I appreciate your time and passion for recruiting!
