Greetings people and pets. Hope we are all doing well and it's not as dreary where you are as it is in Nashvegas.
Wondering what you are hearing about the non-Manning player questions for the Colts. Are they inclined to resign Wayne, Garcon, Saturday, or some combination thereof?
Not hearing anything, but presuming this is a fresh start and more guys will be let walk than re-signed.
If Manning does sign and play elsewhere does Wayne follow him?
Does Manning's new team offer Wayne the best contract?
Hey Paul! I'm just out here getting my swoll on, but how about picking me as your QB on the All-AFC South Team? I played pretty well the games I started, right?
Surely you jest.
Any idea why some of the Colts coaches are still around (Christianson, Prince, etc.)?Also, are the Coordinators for the Colts going to be required to have a goatee? (Irsay, Grigson, Pagano)
A goatee rule would be cool. I suspect some of those assistants had the longest/ newest contracts. Christensen may be the last token guy to help retain a connection to Peyton Manning, but I'd think he too will be on his way out.
If Chuck Pagano puts the 3-4 defense in place in Indy, do you think that will save Jerry Hughes from the title of "bust"
I very seriously doubt that Pagano comes in and says the Colts are a 3-4 from the first snap of the first game. You can't simply move people into different spots in a vastly different philosophy. I'd bet it will be a hybrid deal and a gradual transformation. If Hughes was ineffective as an end asked to rush the quarterback, why will standing up and moving back make him good at it?
There isnt a need to have a FB on the afc south all pro team, bc of injuries and the fact that there wasnt a vonta leach this year. Take out FB and add another RB bc Arian deserves to be on it. He was 5th in rushing yards and missed almost 4 whole games (including Miami game), while sharing time with Tate too. Agree?
Correct that a FB is unnecessary. But I don't buy into this thing where I have to get a guy on. I LOVE Arian Foster. But if Maurice Jones-Drew was the best back in the division this season, then he gets the spot. Cut and dried. Just because another guy was also excellent doesn't mean you bastardize the line up. It's one guy per spot. No one plays two tailbacks so we're not going to pretend they do.
ACL recovery is tough for a CB. Do you see Mathis being re-signed?
Only if he gets no real attention and comes back cheap, late.
What FA WRs do yo see the Jaguars targeting?
Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe or Marques Colston.
Lots of mocks have Jaguar's drafting WR Floyd or DE Couples. Recently a few are mentioning OT. Or, do they go the Gene Smith way; BAP?
Completely depends on what they do in free agency first.
Any chance you will answer any questions not related to the Colts? I ask again, what player/position do you think the Titans will target at pick number 20?
Chief, we are eight minutes in. Relax. I can't tell you a position for a team drafting that late before we see what the team does in free agency. The big needs are pass rusher and safeties.
In light of Eli Manning making it to his second Super Bowl, I am dumbfounded why people continue to assign "bust" status to Blaine Gabbert. Eli was often criticized in his first few seasons for his even-keel demeanor and down-turned face. He wasn't always the picture of poise in the pocket, like Gabbert this season. However with time, Eli has become a first-tier QB. Why don't critics allow Gabbert proper time to develop?
It's an impatient world. And I think you saw more glimpses of potential from Eli Manning back then than you did from Blaine Gabbert. Too early to call him a bust, but certainly no reason to have big expectations of a gigantic turnaround right now.
No one has really said this as an option, and I don't believe it would ever happen, or if it could happen, but if Peyton really wants to stay in Indy, why couldn't the colts cut him, but have a "handshake" agreement that Peyton will re-sign with them for a more cap friendly deal? are there rules against this, or is it just so unrealistic that it could never happen?...Love your work btw
Why is Peyton Manning going to want to do the Colts such a favor?
If i mean when, the colts release manning, does it go to wavier or would he be free agent and should the team claiming or picking him up be responsible for the contract and bonus?
He'll become a free agent and the contract goes away. He'll be free to negotiate a new deal with whomever he likes.
any new up dates on Titans defense end needs?
They still have a big need. What's to update during dead time?
Paul, do you think Jake Locker has a legitamate chance of winning the starting job during training camp? I'm under the impression that this would be a tall order. Either way I'm excited about his future.
If he plays well and Matt Hasselbeck does not, then sure.
Would it be better for the Texans to not re-sign Mario Williams and use that money to get a true no. 2 wide receiver or even a no. 1. Brooks Reed was perfectly capable of playing the olb position.
I think it would be very difficult to re-sign Williams and that they've proven they can be good without him. They'd then need a third OLB, however.
The Jags are going to target a WR in free agency, why do you think Vincent Jackson would be the best fit?
Because he's the most dynamic, biggest different-maker who will be available.
Hey Paul, huge fan.I'm just wondering what you think of all this Peyton Manning talk. I know that there's been plenty of speculation, and he sounded off in the interview, but he also said "I think it's well documented I want to play in the same place my whole career." What do you make of all of this?
To keep him, they'd be assuring themselves of salary cap issues for at least two years. I think they have to let him go, draft Andrew Luck and move on.
Paul Good afternoon, please explains the Jags direction...... if rebuilding or re-tooling should not the following have to occur: 1. GM gene Smith draft better & be held accountable? 2. Perhaps, trade assets with mileage
I don't understand the idea that he's not being held accountable.
I correctly picked Pagano being hired on Irsay's twitter because you wrote about his interview. If I win Super Bowl tickets I owe you a big thanks
I actually think I was off and the blog editors wrote of his interview, so you may owe them.
Any chance the Colts might try to pick up Albert Haynesworth, slide MAthis and Freeney into OLB slots and go for a 3-4, could Pagano pull it off?
Hayensworth hates being asked to play nose in a 3-4, and it makes no sense to me to take guys who have been top-flight ends their whole NFL lives and change their positions at this stage.
Do you think the Texans would be able to make a run at Reggie Wayne if they choose not to bring back Mario Williams? Do you think he would be interested in the Texans?
Yes and yes.
You said that if Mario leaves they would need another OLB, but I think Nading and Braman showed they are good depth
I would not be excited about Nading playing fulltime if someone got hurt. And Braman is encouraging but hardly proven.
Leinart didnt look all that bad in the half that he got to play. Does he retain his No. 2 spot on the rotation or is he gone?
No way does he rank ahead of T.J. Yates at this stage.
How are teams able to release players who are under contract, but a player can't leave a team while under contract? Doesn't the team have the obligation to hold up their end of the bargain? Or, does the contract have this kind of language written in it?
The contracts are not guaranteed. Players know this when they sign the contracts.
Hi PaulCan you please tell me what do you think about Peyton status in Indy and if he is healthy were can he land.
I think he will be released with a lot of fanfare and take his time to finish rehabbing before choosing between some good options: Jets, Cards, Dolphins and maybe even Niners, which would be best.
Do you think maybe we should hold off on the Pagono saving the Colts defense? There is no Lewis Suggs Reed or Nagta on this team.Even if the total focus is on building a defense it is gonna take a couple of years.
Can't he save it in time, when they acquire some additional players? They are allowed to hit home runs with draft picks (or free agents) and find their Suggs/ Ngata/ Reed.
I think the Titans could buck the stand-offish free agency philosophy and go hard for Mario Williams if he becomes a FA, any chance you think this is a possibility??? Would be cool if Mario went to the Texans rivals.
The Titans aren't going to sign the most expensive free agent in the market, I don't think.
Darryl Smith, AFC South team OLB. Thanks.
Yeah, I nearly put him in the locks in that first version.
Does the Pagano hire tell us anything about Grigson? Surely Irsay and Grigson had to be on the same page about the head coach.
Sure, but we're not sure what yet. Certainly Grigson is not afraid of an energetic, high-energy guy. It tells us they are comfortable with a defensive mindset.
What can we expect from Pagano offensively? Is he more likely to be pass-heavy, run-heavy, balanced, or does it depend entirely upon his offensive coordinator or the players he is dealt with?
Certainly depends on coordinator and talent. But he's going to want to run. See this: Samari Rolle on Chuck Pagano
Wherever Peyton goes, so goes the media. Thoughts?
Are you saying it's a big story and his new team will get a lot of coverage? Of course.
Paul, Do you think the Texans should sign another CB and WR via FA in order to really upgrade the team? Appreciate it.
I would hope Brandon Harris is able to be in the corner mix and that the blind faith in Kareem Jackson will end if he's not worthy of being on the field. I think they will make a move to get better at receiver. But they don't have a lot of cash, so don't expect a bunch of big moves.
What are the chances that Peyton Manning takes his talents to Nashville to win 6 or 7 championships?
Zero. Based on the six or seven championships part.
Is the franchise tag (% figure) based on last years salary cap figure or base salary? I've seen reports on Mario's # anywhere from $16MM all the way to $22MM.
I believe it's $16 M, based off last year's base. Either way, prohibitive.
Who do you suspect the Jags have their eyes on at the senior bowl?
Everyone. They aren't at the narrowed down stage. They are in the see everyone stage.
I am absousutly shocked that (insert player from favorite team) is not on your all AFC South team,do you not watch( insert favorite team) play all year.(My guy) is by far better than the guy you picked.
You have it about right. Get a lot of ballots that are all (name team).
Paul, your response to Alex of the UK, plus a comment from a co-worker friend yesterday, leads me to this question: The Titans need pass rushing help. The Vikings need DB help? Might a trade of Cortland Finnegan to the Vikings for Jared Allen (balanced out by draft picks) be feasible? That way, the Titans get pass rushing help, while the Vikings get DB help. Thoughts?
Cortland Finnegan is not under contract. And if the Vikings moved Jared Allen, then they'd need pass rush help.
Why do people ask questions that have already been answered? I love Peyton Manning, but you've already said what you think is going to happen, so why do people need to ask it again?
I ask myself this all chat long every week. Please feel free to scroll back.
Why are the Texans short on cash who is eating up all the money?
You are familiar with the stars on their roster? Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels, Johnathan Joseph, Danieal Manning, Antonio Smith, Eric Winston, DeMeco Ryans.
do you think the Titans regret not taking Jason Pierre Paul and taking Morgan instead?
JPP was drafted before Morgan, not after. The Titans didn't have a chance to pass.
Rick Dennison and Greg Knapp were given a lot of credit by Gary Kubiak for helping the offense keep chugging along despite starting 3 different QB's. Why hasn't anyonw talked about them recently for promotions elsewhere (Dennison as a HC and Knapp as a coordinator)?
Don't know. Dennison was interviewed by Denver for HC last year.
If the best case scenario for the Titans in the draft is that they select a Pro Bowl caliber Defensive End worthy of giving a big second contract why wouldn't they consider paying Mario Williams? It's a premium position and isn't it worth the extra $2-3M per year to grab a proven 27 year old player at your greatest position of need? This is a very unique circumstance. This isn't Peppers and his 3rd contract.
The difference between a first-round draft pick and Mario Williams will be far more than $2-3 million annually. More like $12-13 million.
Isn't the best person for the OC job for the Colts, Tom Moore? He's done it before. He knows the best parking spots around 56th Street. I wonder what his opinion is on facial hair.
They are going young, I would expect. He's not young.
Not sur of Texans cap status can they afford a long term deal for Foster and Mario and if they can pull it off will it completely limit them in the FA market?
Foster will be a restricted free agent. They have control of him for another year, though I expect they will pay him. As we've said here, it's highly unlikely they can afford Mario Williams.
I'm kind of angry that Peyton Manning called me Sodapop Curtis. Thoughts?
The owner of the Jags Shad Kahn said he will spend to the cap. The Jags are at least 30 mil under the cap. Do you expect them to make a run at somebody like Mario Williams or Cliff Avril if available. Along with a big time WR?
I do. I could see them being a player for a top DE and a top WR.
Do you really see T.J. as the Q.B. of the future, or will he be a perennial back up?
He'll be a starter for someone at some point.
Any chance we get Me-sean from Phili in FA?
Doesn't really bring the sort of character Gene Smith wants.
Mike Munchack in his latest interview spoke about the lockout effecting the linemen most. Do you believe that this is true and this full offseason will fix the run game problem? Or, is it really just lack of player talent? Do we really need to pick an OL in the early rounds of the draft?
I'd like to see one inside the first three round, but it's not a necessity. They need to add a veteran guard and draft a guy. One replaces Scott, the other pressures Eugene Amano and Leroy Harris.
Will schaub be ready for training camp i have heard his injury is serious?
We don't know. I'm big on saying "I've read" as opposed to "I've heard." I've heard suggests you've got sources rather than the Internet, don't you think?
Your thoughts, please, on the coaching staff that Mularkey has put together. Can the assistants make a real difference for this team?
Seems good. of course they make a difference. They are they guys who are the biggest influence on players.
I've read that Dwight Freeny will cost the Colts $19 mil against the cap this year.I know he still has something left but would extending him to lower tha cap hit make sense at this point, especially if Pagano wants to go another direction with the defense and go 3-4 somewhere in the next couple of years?
Yeah, anyone who's real expensive will be at risk.
I'm a Ravens fan, but this question centers around Vontae Leach! This guy has been nothing short of INCREDIBLE at FB for the Ravens, which leads me to this question: Why did Houston not resign him?
Because a fullback can only make so much of a difference at at a certain point it's silly to pay what he can get elsewhere. The Texans run game was just as good without Leach as it was with him.
Why do people (fans and media) keep saying that the Texans should franchise Mario and trade him. Isn't that not possible? even if they had the money to franchise him, he doesn't have to sign that tender, making a trade impossible. Why would his agent let him sign a one year deal and stay out of free agency just so the Texans can get a first round pick out of him???
Plus, as soon as he signs it, you have to have room for it. He goes on your books.
Think the jags will target a cornerback in free agency? Someone who could come in and start.
Possible. Possible they address other areas in free agency, then address corner in the draft. Certainly a need spot.
Do you think that Finnegan would take a reasonable contract offer from the Titans or do you think that he would jump if another team offered a couple million more a year? He talks so much about loving nashville and wanting to stay with the Titans. Do you think he would take less money to do so?
No one is staying anywhere for millions less. I'm not convinced the Titans want him.
Who's gonna be using my locker next week? My pesky little brother, or that other guy? If it's the other guy, I could leave some, um, gifts for him there.
The AFC will occupy the Colts facility.
If the Texans don't work out a long term deal soon for Arian, they'll have to tender him the max restriced free agent contract. If all another team has to do is give up a first round pick and a better contract then the Texans would give him, do you think that New England would try and pluck him with their 31st or 32nd pick? They'll already have New Orleans 1st round pick and Oaklands second round making the loss of their 1st rounder not as important.
Texans would still have the right to match, so risk of losing him would be minimal. I love Foster, but I don't think other teams should give up a premium for a running back. The Texans found Foster as an undrafted.
I love the Pagano signing by the Colts. The only thing that worries me is not having an offensive minded coach to groom Luck. I've heard Hue Jackson could be a candidate as OC, but I don't know anything about how good he is. Any possibilities you know of for OC?
Not beyond Jackson. Obviously OC is a huge hire. There will be a coach in place to groom Andrew Luck.
What makes you think that adding just one piece to the Titans OL will fix the problem? Was Scott that bad or do you have faith in Amano and Harris?
I said potentially two pieces. You replace Scott, who's contract is up, and you have a guy with the potential to replace Amano or Harris. Two of three in the interior line would be major change, no?
I see Reggie Wayne and/or Robert Mathis being released and signing with Tennessee for the simple fact it happens on a regular basis (David Thornton, Nick Harper, Jake Scott, Ben Hartsock, ...)
The guys the Titans signed from Indy were on their way up, not on their way down. Mathis is still great, but the clock is ticking. Wayne is still good but definitely starting to fade. Will the Colts sign a Titans scrub for the simple fact it happens on a regular basis? See Rocky Calmus, Courtney Roby, Rocky Boiman or Mike Echols. (Antonio Johnson a notch better.)
Are the Houston Texans now the team to beat in the AFC-South, even IF Peyton returns to Indy?
Absolutely Houston is the team to beat in the AFC South now.
Why do the Patriots get the Colts facility and not the Giants? Coin flip?
Predetermined in the planning where AFC and NFC team are based.
Your thoughts on the Yankees offseason moves?
Love it all. Hope they leave DH open and just rotate guys through for "days off."
i want the the titans to get j saturday!
The Colts are obviously in a rebuilding mode. Can we expect more than 2 wins next year?
Rebuilding teams break through annually. Certainly I'd expect them to be better than they were this year. They'll have a better QB.
Are you planning to grow a moustache to show support for our new AFC South Owner???
Let's say Mario Williams and his contract are gone and the Texans pick up Reggie Wayne. What do we go for in the draft?
Best thing sitting there for you, I'd say.
Thanks for coming every one. I enjoyed it!
