Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the boxing chat. Slowwww weekend but there is a nice FNF card tonight and a lot of stuff coming up. Make sure to check out the new blog, news stories and today's notebook. Let's get to it.

Cotto marcos [via mobile]

What about Cotto mostly ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

A) They fought once before, Cotto won. B) Zero discussion about that fight. C) Makes zero sense to do a rematch at this point.

BIGxED [via mobile]

I just read that there's a possibility for a Canelo vs. Moseley fight. I love this match up. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

You probably were reading my blog on it from yesterday. If Canelo is not fighting Mayweather and GB isn't matching him with a young guy like a Kirkland then I actually dont have a big issue with the fight. If Shane is healthy (which he swears he is and was not for Pacquiao) maybe he can give Canelo a fight.

Danny C (NY)

Which side is more at fault for not wanting to put the Mayweather-Pacquiao together?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Back and forth they go. It is very obvious that both sides own a share of the blame.

David (Atlanta)

Arum keeps saying Pacquiao's opponent will be announced next week, well it's the end of another week, what's up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Who knows? Probably getting everything worked out. The tea leaves are beginning to read more and more like Bradley unless suddenly Cotto and Manny can agree on a weight.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Danito Donaire! April is looking good for boxing freaks with the Brandon Rios date and Abner Mares date the following week.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

If those cards come off on the dates being discussed, agreed.

Tim F (Saint Paul)

Is the Manny purses Floyd posts on twitter correct? Why were they reported higher? What gives?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I've been over this before. The figures written a Nevada contract are not necessarily the real number for big PPV guys. They get most of their money off PPV generally. So if Manny's "official" purse is $8 million fine. But he is guaranteed in his contract with Top Rank (which is not something the commission would have or release if if did) something like $20 million or whatever. The money is the money. One of the reasons for the disaprity is because Manny is not a US citizen and is often paid a large amount of his money through his Filipino promotional company and deals in the Philippines for things like the television revenue there. So while it looks like a big difference it is not in reality. So folks can keep on drinking the kool aid. But they dont get how the business actually works when it comes to fighters from overseas. I once covered a world title fight in Vegas with a champion from South Africa in say about 2002. His Nevada contract for a world title fight said his official purse was like $1,000. But he was making more like $50,000 because of the TV money from South Africa. You can do anything with numbers. What is written on the Nevada paper for big time fights isn't worth the paper it is written on.

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

Hopkins/Dawson II is approved by a network, while Bute/Froch is rejected by another... what a world we live in.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

A world where TV executives who buy boxing matches have different ideas.

WBC (Mexico)

We have a great idea for you Mr. Rafael. Every time you mention your brother-in-law's grilled cheese sandwich store, you could charge him a small fee.

Isai [via mobile]

Shame In Showtime for not taking bute vs froch. Put dirrell on the undercard if you really want him that bad.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I dont get it either. Bute-Dirrell is not a fight I have much interest in. Dirrell has done nothing to in two years other than beat a C-level opponent. It is also a crap style match. Bute-Froch is a good fight since Ward-Bute is not on the table right now.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

I truly don't care about Floyd vs Manny anymore its all a joke, bring real fights and real fighters who want to fight each other.

JoJo (Thousand Oaks, CA)

Chances well see Donaire vs. Rigondeaux in 2012?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Almost no chance. Rigondeaux is an enormous talent but means zero financially. I have been to club shows that did huge money compared to the pathetic $14,000 gate he did with Ramos. Top Rank isn't stupid.

Steve (KC)

Why do I get the feeling if Ken Hershman was still at Shotime he would buy Bute-Froch in a heart beat?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

We'll never know.

jonathan (los angeles, ca)

what's crakin', dan??...... can weigh in on whether rigondeaux is ready or not for donaire?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Athletically he is ready. Commercially he is in the minor leagues.

Boxingtitan (NYC (Big Apple))

Make Robert Guerraro go away..............

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Not Robert, just the press releases.

Jason (Atlanta)

The fact that a network would insist on the joke of a fighter that is Dirrell is terrible. How can the Espinosa "say" that with a straight face.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Well Steve does have a nice smile. :)

Darryl p (Indianapolis)

Is Shane Mosley still a free agent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Yes.

steve (montreal)

is pascal vs. sillakh on showtime still possible?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Possible but seems like a slim one at the moment. But I'll say this -- I love that fight and really hope one of the networks picks it up. It's too expensive for an FNF but I'd love to see it on HBO or Showtime or Epix.

C.M. (Toronto)

So, on Twitter (of course), Tarver making deranged allegations that he was poisoned before the Hopkins fight, on top of losing 50+ pounds in 2 months. They should rematch just so Hopkins can say, "Got any excuses tonight, Magic Man?"

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Tarver made the same poisoning allegations after the fight. I scoffed at them then and now. I have no interest in that rematch and I would imagine the public wouldn't either. Move on. Keep in mind the fight they did have was not entertaining.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Do you see Dat Ngyuen as a legit opponent for Russell Jr.?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

No. Russell by violent wipeout.

Ozair (NEW JERS)

Rumors of Khan's next fight vs Mosley at 147... Is Shane washed up or does he still have some in the tank?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

RUMORS????? Did you read my blog yesterday?

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, what did you think about Chop Chop's fight last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nice win for the old veteran beating Bracero. Always liked Corley. Wins some, loses some, always gives an effort.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Froch/Bute is a great fan friendly fight. Why so much BS these days. The best fights never seem to get made.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Would you consider Gabriel Rosado a decent step-up for someone like Vanes Martirosyan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

That's an OK fight sure. But I think Vanes is ready for a title fight of some kind. That said, I think Rosado has gotten better and I thought he looked really good against Soto-Karass and I'd like to see him in a bigger fight too.

cj (toledo oh)

Does Roy Jones get one more title shot

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Dont shoot the messenger but his camp is talking to the Wlodarczyk people about a cruiserweight title fight.

Dan (Boston)

Would a rematch between Jermain Taylor and Pavlik be interesting to you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I mean I'd watch it but why? Pavlik won both fights, no controversy.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

I'm glad DeMarco-Katsidis is not going through. Katsidis is 1-3 in his past 4 fights, we don't need insignificant boxing on HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Stop with "insignificant." I know this -- it's an action fight and that is what I want to see.

Liam (UK)

21 year old Fernando Vargas v 21 year old Canelo.. who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Terrific fight. I would say Vargas would have beaten him when he was 21. Vargas was an absolute beast early in his career. He beat serious guys at a time when Canelo is fighting the old guys, small guys, no hope guys, fringe contender guys. Vargas was beating the good version of Campas and then guys like Quartey and prime Winky Wright (although I happen to have thought Winky edged him, but the point is that even to be extremely competitive with prime Winky so young is amazing). And then don't forget that he went head to head with prime Trinidad. And even though Vargas got ultimately destroyed, he had his moments and had Tito down. The low blow killed him in the first half of the fight. He never recovered.

Van (Phoenix)

Just for scraps, I wouldn't mind seeing Margarito vs Mayorga. I think the fight could be interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

On the undercard of Pavlik-Taylor 2 right?

Bill (NYC)

Dan, when do you expect that we'll find out 1- if May-Pac is happening and 2-who their opponents will be if not?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Soon come. But I strongly believe there will not be Pacquiao-Mayweather in May. Ain't happening.

Brandon (DSM)

Did I miss something? Is Dirrell fighting Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

No, he is not. That is the fight Showtime said it would accept for Bute in April, according to Jean Bedard of InterBox, Bute's promoter.

Lucian (Portland OR)

Is Frankie Gomez going the way of Panchito Bojado?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I've been hearing about his legal issues and all that. I am beginning to view Gomez as the next Ricardo Williams, a monster bust who made huge money to sign, had high minimums and never amounted to crap because he had no work ethic or focus or real desire and was always having weight issues.

cj (toledo oh)

Giants or patriots

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

You must be a rookie here. GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lifelong fan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

You must be a rookie here. GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lifelong fan.

Greg (MI)

JJM v Peterson good fight - whats the chances of it happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

It's been discussed. I suppose it could happen. But I spoke with the Peterson camp earlier today and there has been no offer, no real specifics. Just the topic brought up. They are still seriously considering the Khan rematch too, which is a fight they say they want under the right circumstances.

Ruben (Houston, TX.)

Dan, do you think Guerrero should test the water at 147 with say, a Paulie Malignaggi first instead of calling out Sergio freaking Martinez? What's next, Andre Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Whether it's Paulie or someone else, Robert Guerrero (who I am a big fan of personally and professionally) needs to fight a legitimate guy at 140 or 147 and show us what he can do and that his shoulder is OK before he calls out guys that he has not chance of landing a fight with. Just go out there, fight hard, win (even lose but look good)and then you can maybe get one of those fights. Until then the talk means nothing and neither do the constant press releases.

Jeremy/Las Vegas [via mobile]

Since weight is a big issue in Cotto Pacquiao rematch, what are the chances Cotto gets a shot at Floyd on May 5th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I think it's a good chance. Cotto is a free agent. He can go with TR or GB for any fight. At this point, he wants the most money. Pay him the most, give him the best deal and he will take the fight.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

If you had a vote, is Jorge Posada a first ballot Hall of Famer? Jorgie will be missed either way!

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I'm a Yankees fan but I have been studying his numbers and the numbers of the other HOF catchers and I say Posada is definitely a HOFer. The 5 World Series rings should count for a ton and his stats are every bit as good as the crop of HOF catchers and even better in some cases. Plus he was clutch, great rep as a teammate, rarely missed time for injuries and was never remotely connected to PEDs.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

I can't help but feel real bad for K9 Bundrage, he finally wins a title and is forced to sit on the sidelines.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

His promoter Don King has not done him one favor.

jim (chicago) [via mobile]

When a ppv buyrate total is released does that include foreign ppv totals as well

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

No.

Rich (Los Angeles)

If Ortiz knocks out Berto convincingly, do you think he gets another shot at Mayweather on May 5th or would that date be too soon in between fights for Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

No chance. Mayweather's opponent will be set before they even have the rematch. Even if it wasn't it would be too soon between fights.

dan (brooklyn)

i love cotto v mayweather at 154

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

That is a good fight, I agree, although it would have been a lot better about 4 years ago.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, I'd forgotten DeMarco and Linares were ordered a rematch. Why is that? I don't remember anything controversial about that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

That's the wretched WBC for you. DeMarco rallied and won fair and square on a late KO. NOTHING controversial other than maybe it was stopped sooner as Linares was bleeding out.

Jenx (Evansville, IN)

Danny Baseball, if you had a HOF vote do you take into account Donnie Baseball's injuries and vote for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Don Mattingly is my ALL-TIME favorite player in any sport. But being honest, no.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Don Mattingly is my ALL-TIME favorite player in any sport. But being honest, no.

Derek (Hartford, CT)

I think Cotto has the ability to beat pacquiao at 150 if Pac agreed to that catchweight...what do u think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I do think it's a winnable rematch for Cotto at a fair weight. I may be in the minority with you, but that is how I feel.

Chris (Worcester)

Any word on who Edwin Rodriguez will fight next, his last fight was very close.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

He fights Don Geoege on March 17 on HBO on the Sergio Martinez-Matt Macklin undercard.

Dan (Delaware)

I've been arguing with my friend about who would win between Cotto vs Canelo. Who did you think wins that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

That's the fight at 154 I love. I would give both guys a decent chance. But what a helluva fight. Would be a great action fight and a very passionate crowd in Las Vegas or New York or LA or wherever.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

3 months is too soon in between fights? My how times have changed....

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

For a major PPV, way too soon.

Joe (Cincinnati)

Chatting and tweeting Adrien Broner at the same time! Impressive!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

A man's gotta do what he's gotta do.

john (san francisco)

I just want to say that this whole Manny and Mayweather saga has finally gotten me not to care. I hope one of them loses their next fight so they will both suffer for being such jerks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

You are not the only one saying that. I feel that way sometimes too.

PG (Las Cruces NM )

Winky wright, Jermaine Taylor,Paul Williams, Kelly Pavlik rank them in terms of better overall career.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Winky, Taylor, Pavlik, Williams.

Juan (Riverside)

Love child???

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Was bummed he pulled out of his fight last week.

Liam (London)

Breaking news from UK: James Degale has split with Promoter Frank Warren. Woaahh

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

So I've heard. Nothing like that surprises me.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Mattingly's my all time fav. as well. The only arguement I can make for him making the hall is that he has comparable numbers to Kirby Puckett who is in the Hall.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Agreed, but Kirby had defining moments in the World Series too and had more consistency overall whereas Mattingly's numbers really dropped later in his career because of the injuries.

Abel Oxnard CA [via mobile]

Hey Dan, will you be at Ortiz vs Berto? Who wins and why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I'll be there. Haven't made up my mind yet. Next week I'll be in San Antonio for Chavez-Rubio/Donaire-Vazquez card and then the week after for Ortiz-Berto in Vegas.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

FYI: Frank Warren just put out a statement which popped into the Freak Email that says "James DeGale is in fact under contract until 14 April 2013."

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, great notebook as always, will Moses give my boy Ricky Burns much trouble?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Thanks. I think Moses is a very solid boxer. I haven't seen him in awhile but I do have taped of him and he is a good fundamental fighter with good experience. I do think it's a nice fight.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Glad Leonard and Hearns didn't act like Manny and Floyd.

David (Houston)

Don't you think Floyd will try and lowball Cotto big time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

No idea, but I know this for certain -- Cotto isn't taking relative chump change. He's not going to kiss the ground for the usual $2.5 millionish Floyd's been paying opponents. I think JM Marquez got $4 million guarantee. Cotto is going to ask for (and deserves) way more for what he brings to the table. Other than Manny and Floyd, Cotto is the next biggest attraction in boxing in the US.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

What are the odds of Rios-Gamboa actually coming off for April?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I think possible but I wont bet on it.

Boxingtitan ((Big Apple (NYC)))

If Showtime really wants a good fight, Kessler vs Bute........ What happen to that idea?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Kessler is supposed to fight Stieglitz when he returns from injury.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Do you know if the Rodriguez-George fight will be televised? Or is HBO just showing the Sergio-Macklin fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

As I said earlier, it's on the HBO telecast as the opener of the doubleheader.

David (Houston)

If Floyd fights Cotto do you, me, and everyone else get to tell him he is fighting Manny's leftovers since he always likes to use that? Love to hear that answer especially since I think the "leftover" thing is toetally ridiculous.

Elbeyako (DC)

Will HBO start using HBO Zone to show undercard fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It should have years ago. Showtime has copied a lot of things from HBO. This would be a good thing for HBO to copy from Showtime.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, how come Pascal-Sillakh won't fit in Showtime's budget ? I know they have less than HBO but that fight can't be worth more than a million in license fee, right ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I think based on their sked in the time frame in which they hope Sillakh-Pascal will take place it doesnt fit in Showtime's sked or budget.

Elbeyako (DC)

After the Khan/Peterson controversy, are we ever going to get boxing back in the nation's capital?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

After the crowd they drew I sure hope so. No reason not too. Great fight fans here.

Justin (Seattle)

For any rookies, the great loves of DTM's sporting life:Duke B-BallNY Yankee Baseball and Don MattinglyNY Giants FootballJoel Julio (the paternity tests are definitive)Arturo Gatti

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Don't forget my wife, my cats and my mother.

Rex (north dakota)

Any news on how Pavlik is doing in Cali? how relationship with new trainer is going?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

So far so good from what I hear. I wrote about it last week to lead the notebook so check it out.

Sergio (Washington, D.C.)

Dano! You are in constant communication with both parties. Do you think Mayweather and Pacquiao will fight at the end of this year? If not, do you think they will ever fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I have no idea. It's been a fluid situation for 2 years. How can you predict? What if something happens while Floyd is in jail and he gets in some trouble? Then he'll do the full six months and there wont be a fight at the end of the year. Point is too many things can happen so it is foolish to predict.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, I know that Bernard Hopkins is a physical freak, but don't you think at nearly 47, he should angle toward retirement?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Well that is what a lot of folks have been saying to BHop for a long time. For me, I kinda get a kick outta covering a guy older than me who can still fight.

Pinga (Puerto Rico)

Dan, is Bob Arum's magic stadium happening for the next Pacquiao fight, regardless if it's Mayweather or not?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

No, my understanding that the June fight will be at MGM, although Arum has also mentioned Thomas & Mack, which is a horrible place for fights.

Justin (Seattle)

I specified sporting life, I aim to never pry into your private life. However, Mrs. DTM is a master at pronouncing Thai boxer names.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Good point.

Jay (Dallas)

Dan, any idea why Orlando Salido would agree to fight in Puerto Rico against Juanma in the rematch? I understand Juanma is the bigger name, but seems to me Salido only wins if he knocks out Juanma other than that he'll have a hard time with the judges

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Simple: $. More of it there for Salido.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Any word on TV ratings for the NBC Sports Net show last week? I thought it was a decent start for them.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Have not heard a thing or even had the slightest interest in trying to find out.

Paul (Half Moon Bay, CA)

What would Macklin have to do to beat Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I'd say either get a knockout or more point on the cards after 12 rounds.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Dan, take me inside the mind of a boxing writer..

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

....... aw sh--.

Horn (Vegas)

I was watching an old episode of White Shadow that starred Carlos Palomino. Can you believe that there was a reference in the episode stating that "Boxing is a dying sport." This was 1979!!! I guess some "deaths" are very slow ones eh?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Epic for two reasons: The comment about boxing and getting a reference to one of my favorite shows from when I was kid into the chat!! White Shadow was awesome.

Mike (New York)

Will Chuck Giampa be on the next edition of SHOBOX? Really enjoyed his insights!

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Ummmmmm. Aw sh--.

Alex (Seattle)

Any chance that Nevada State Commission 'doesn't' grant Mayweather a license?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I do think he will be licensed but you never know. They had a gazillion dollar fight between Lewis and Tyson ready for Vegas and would not license Tyson. Anything is possible.

NYC Boxer (Upstate New York)

what do you think about up and coming welterweight prospect Sadam Ali?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I think he needs to get with a promoter, get busy, get a direction and stop messing around with fights that are not advancing his career.

Jackson (Gary, Indiana)

LOVED the White Shadow! Long live Coolidge, Thorpe, Heyward and the rest of the gang!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

DO NOT FORGET SALAMI!!!!!!!!!

Abel (Oklahoma)

Just wondering, what is it that causes dislike for the Thomas and Mack for boxing events?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

They should put a wrecking ball through it. It is like a cave. Very old and not attractive, comfortable or modern in any way. Pain in the butt to get to and from, weak sight lines for fans, etc....

Jose (NY)

BIG BLUE!!!!!

Tota (New York City)

At what point to do you see Bob Arum stepping down from his Top Rank duties?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Never. He'll work as long as he physically and mentally able too. It is not work for him. It is his life.

Lucian (Portland OR)

Coolidge could ball.

Anthony (NY)

Has Bob ever explained his fascination with having a fight card in Macau? It seems like a random spot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Not at all. It is a growing gamling city in Asia. Lots of casinos. Makes a lot of sense.

phil (frankfurt)

can you tell us some of the best fights you have been to outside the USA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I havent been to many but I went to a Cotto show in Puerto Rico, Hopkins-Dawson 2 in Montreal, Sam Peter-Maskaev and Nate Campbell-Juan Diaz in Cancun.

Steve (KC)

When was the last time the Thomas and Mack Center had a relevant fight? Hatton-Castillo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I dont recall the dates but I have covered fights like Hatton-Castillo, Jones-Ruiz, Castillo-Corrales 2 and Pacquiao-Morales 2 and 3 there.

Anthony (NY)

I'd prefer Peterson get the fight with Pacquiao just so we could say, "See Timmy, beating Khan DOES help your career."

ace boogie (sac town)

why is Kahn such a cry baby? he seems like a real jerk in real life... to discredit LP the way he did is not cool. He blames everyone else except himself for the loss... he fought like he was scared of him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Khan has complained about the result, I agree, but he is not at all a jerk. He is actually a very nice guy. He also did not discredit Lamont. Showed a lot of respect for him before and after the fight. He was unhappy with the refereeing and the weird stuff going on at ringside and I don't blame him for that.

Sam (San Francisco, CA)

White Shadow was the show!! You do bear a resemblance to Abner Goldstein but do you scrap like Salami?

Horn (Vegas)

I think David Stern shares your opinion of the Thomas & Mack. The 2007 NBA All Star game was held there and it basically ruined any chances of us getting an NBA team.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

If you ever got an NBA team it would need a modern arena, not that dump.

GuevoMan (Philadelphia)

Giants D over Patriot's O, all day long!

Daniel Son (Washington D.C)

DAN, I have to agree with you! Khan is as polite of a person as can be. He took a picture with me, signed an autograph and chit chatted with me without hesitation. He seemed as down to earth of a guy you can meet

Van (Phoenix)

At this point I wouldn't mind seeing Bobby Pacquiao vs Roger Mayweather just to clear my fight nerves.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Manny (LA)

Pac-Man vs Chavez at 140? Fantasy fight i love!!!!! who wins???

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Awesome fight. I kinda think Chavez would find a way to win.

David (Houston)

Have you ever been to a card at the Alamodome? I bought the cheap seats and was wondering how good or bad the view might be.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Nope, this will be my first trip to San Antonio.

Swish (NY)

Is David Price going to be a factor in the heavyweights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

He looks like he could become a factor. I have liked him since the Olympics. He is big and very heavy handed.

Steven (Chicago)

I'm planning a bachelor party for May 5th. 2 or 3 strippers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

3. Better one too many than one too few.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

Dan, I'm excited to see Broner live on Feb 25th, but I don't know much about Eloy Perez? Is it a legit competition?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Perez is unbeaten and a good contender at the lower end of the top 10 in a weak division. In the alphabet though he is mandatory. Honestly, I think Broner handles him fairly easily but Perez is has looked very good in his last few fights and shown some power, which had been sorely lacking.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, i felt bad for chuck giampa last week. but by end of the night rico ramos pulled off the biggest choke.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

brian (ca)

Isn't it just insane of Mayweather to request more than 50% or that Pacquiao accept a flat fee?

Horn (Vegas)

In watching that episode of the White Shadow, it prompted me to look up Palomino's brother, Paul who was also on the show. Sad to see he died in a plane crash the very next year.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, for the Showtime extreme undercard broadcasts, would they still use their A-team commentating, would they bring a B-team, or would it be just the fights with ambient sound and no commentating?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

In the story I wrote about it recently, Stephen Espinoza of Showtime said the plan is to use the usual announcers who are doing that night's main fights.

Kobe (LA)

Do you think Josh Clottey get another maga fight after a lack of performance with Pac Man?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

No. And why should he?

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

How about Buboy Fernandez vs. 50 cent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Nice. And maybe Miss Jackson vs Jinkee too? What about Haymon vs Koncz?

Mascavicho (Mom's basement)

Can you please confirm the number of Ricky Hattons?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Just to be clear: One.

Nick (Denver)

50 would hammer buboy. I think 50 cent used to be a golden gloves boxer.

oscar (glendale, ca)

dan, what do you think of...Robert Guerrero vs Marquez or Amir Khan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Khan-Guerrero at 140 is a fight I would LOVE to see.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Do you think its wise for HBO to pay for Hopkins Dawson II?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

It all depends on how much. Keep in mind, HBO also has one fight left on a contract with Hopkins. I know one thing -- the fight will do a rating because of Hopkins' name and the hype it will get because of the first fight.

Pierre (Pitt)

Did you have Tito winning on the scorecards against Oscar?

eddie (mpls)

$1million purse bid for paulie vs the ukranian? wow. what would you guess paulie's share is?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

As I wrote in the notebook -- Paulie would be entitled to $250K, less than the promotional company offered. Paulie turned it down and wound up being guaranteed less on the bid. Not sure if he will accept it and go there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Notebook link is here Fight Freaks. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7508475/jermain-taylor-striving-stay-busy-fight-again-april

Joe (Las Vegas)

Are fighters allowed to gamble on themselves?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

In Las Vegas, there is no rule I am aware of that would prevent a fighter from legally betting on himself.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

If you want to see my appearance on Thursday's Sky Ringside in England you can watch it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2Dp0AkGsQ0

mike (nyc)

Golden Boy must really not have cared about staging this fight with a 250k bid. I mean, Pauly got offered 300k originally, you would think a 250k purse bid wouldnt cut it

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I'm not sure what was up with that. Bidding $250,000 looked like it was for show. But if the other company defaults I believe the fight would fall to GB for its bid.

Steve (KC)

Speaking of the Broner fight, all fight freaks in the region should make the trip to St. Louis. Good card and cheap tickets, for boxing in the midwest it doesn't get much better.

Bill (NYC)

Dan, I heard the 2nd episode of On Freddie Roach is pretty good. Can we expect a better one than last week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I was able to watch eps 1 and 2 back to back because those were the eps HBO sent out for preview purposes. I liked both but I did think the second episode was better. The second episode centers largely around the Wild Card and a shocking medical issue that goes down one day.

ed (pittsburgh)

dan $250k a lot of money where else is paulie going to make that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Pretty much nowhere.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Are we allowed to start criticizing Stephen Espinoza now? I mean, geez.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Not yet. Too soon. I'll let ya know when it is OK. :)

Tota (NYC)

Is Antonio Tarver still boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

He would like to fight again, yes, after beating Danny Green. He has been mentioned as a possible challenger to Wlodarczyk. The camps have talked.

Yukachanel (Virginia)

Do you think Jorge Linares will ever reach his full potential?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

I dont think so.

Juan (Sherman Oaks)

any concrete word on Mikey Garcia opponent on the Juanma undercard- i read Concepcion was an option being discussed

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Showtime told me it was Concepcion. I wrote some about it in the notebook.

Hinrich (Germany)

What is the connection between Stephen Espinoza and Al Haymon? Seems like a strong one...

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

The connection would be this: Haymon has most of his fighters with Golden Boy and is extremely close to Golden Boy. Espinoza, before coming to Showtime, served as Golden Boy's top attorney and was involved in doing their contracts.

Sean Mc (Meath)

Apart from Povetkin who has Teddy Atlas trained?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Well you may have heard of former heavyweight champion Michael Moorer? It is questions like this one that make me feel old.

Brian (Vincent, NJ)

Do you think George Foreman was one the all time great Heavyweights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Really? I mean REALLY? Banishment, where you at bro?

Abre Q. Voy (San Juan, P.R.)

My boss just caught me in the chat. What's the command I can use to exit quickly and look like I'm working? Please help Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Busted.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

How much is HBO going to put up for Hopkins-Dawson II?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I dont know but I think it is quite safe to say a lot less than the $3 million it paid for the first fight.

Carl (Richmond)

LOVE that EPIX is picking up the European fights and airing them live on Saturday afternoons. It reminds me of the ABC Wide World of Sports fights when I was a kid.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Agreed!

Mace (Denver)

Hitting Vegas in Feb for Ortiz/Berto... first live fight.... Any tips?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Protect yourself at all times.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Alt+Tab is your friend, Freaks. That or a quick minimize.

Phil (NJ)

I cant remember: Has there ever been boxing at the Aviator? The venue that Judah vs. Paris is at in March?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Sure, been a bunch of cards there.

Mike (Homer Glen, IL)

Hey Dan. I'm looking forward to seeing Provodnikov tonight. What changes to you expect to see in him now that he is being trained by Freddie Roach?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

I am too. I dont think you can do much to change a guy like that. What you do is try to maybe correct an obvious flaw and maybe tighten up the defenses. But he is who he is. You maybe pick out one or two things to really go to school on. I always like watching Provnodnikov fight.

Samuel (Indianapolis)

Dan, will you be coming to indy for the superbowl?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

No, I will be flying home from San Antonio and will watch the game on the big screen.

M. Manuel (Cogiendoporsaco, Cancun)

whats next for Dulorme

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Feb 17 ShoBox main event.

tim (st. lou)

Foreman all time great? Who has Atlas trained? Am I reading the tennis chat?

miguel long island n.y [via mobile]

Hey dan do u personally think that miguel cotto is scared to fight sergio martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I personally dont think Cotto would be afraid to fight God.

Brian (DC)

Worse start to 2012, Rico Ramos or Chuck Giampa?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

At least Chuck made a slight recovery.

Alec (Nashville)

Is there going to be any American TV outlet for either Klitschko fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Where you been bro? Epix will carry both of them live polus the Povetkin-Huck fight the week in between them.

Pedro (Puerto Rico)

Danomite, are you coming to Puerto Rico for Juanma-Salido, the island is full of Freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Not for this one, no.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

From the Bat Email: Today's Mike Jones-Randall Bailey purse bid was postponed until next Friday.

Bill (NYC)

Did Bute turn down the Dirrell fight? Don't you think he should take it and fight on Showtime

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

They know the Froch fight is much bigger in Canada. So no, I dont think he should take Dirrell. Why? He brings nothing to the table -- NOTHING -- financially and he is not known in Canada. Won't sell a single ticket. Means nothing for Showtime's ratings. Just utter pointlessness. Keep in mind, it is not as though Showtime is insisting on Dirrell. He was just somebody it suggested.

Juan (TX)

Alexander Maidana is it a 10 rounds?

Van (Phoenix)

Bob Foster vs Roy Jones, Jr.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

At 175, Foster breaks Roy in two.

Scott (fall river)

Hey Dan is it me or is ZAB CRAZY for taking a fight against Paris ??? Why fight a guy like that when it's a LOSE/LOSE situation

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Where else is Zab going?

clay (chattanooga)

hey Dan, what was the problem with Chuck Giampa? i wasn't able to watch Live so i dvr'd it & FF thru the breaks in between rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

That's your loss.

Samuel (Indianapolis)

Dan, i read the article about Hopkins and he seems like a laid back kind of guy, so i started watching some of his fights and the guy almost has the same body today.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Laid back is not the way I would ever describe Hopkins. He is one of the more high strung people I know.

Thelomonto (NM)

did you patch things up w Dana White?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

LOL, there was never a problem to patch up.

Dannie (Columbia, SC)

Why are you and the boxing media not being honest on the 50-50 split thing between Mayweather and Pac? Mayweather has no problem with a 50-50 split of the purse, his only beef is the 50-50 split in revenue seeing as though he puts some of his own money up for his fights unlike Pac. And we all know, the man with the most financial risk deserves the bigger reward!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Dude you are on drugs. 50-50 is 50-50 of the whole damn pie. Mayweather is not putting up his own money. Please.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I cannot get over the utter stupidity of some people. I mean how do these folks actually get through a day without somehow getting hit by a car or touching a live electrical wire or drinking poison?

Steve (KC)

Hopkins laid back LOL, next you're gonna tell me Floyd Mayweather is modest!

paul (denver) [via mobile]

Heard Mike alvarado vs jmm any truth to that

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Nonsense. Bad rumor.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Is Antonio Tarver a Hall of Famer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Not in my view at this point. No.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, I do not know how they get by each. True story: yesterday I went to a restaurant, and the cashier said the register was broken, so she asked one of her co-workers what 8 x 4 was. Ready for this part: the other lady said, "40". No lie.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

At least my Shirley is better at math when it comes to paying.

Jake (UK)

If Vitali Vs Haye was made would you be interested in watching it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

I have no interest in watching the fraud Toe against Klitschko. He had his chance against Wlad and did nothing.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

8 x 4 = 40? What is she, Roy Jones' accountant?

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Big blue are on an incredible run... Everybody SALSA!!!

Oscar (Tampa Bay)

Hey Dano, What's next for Perro Angulo? Any rumors of his next fight/opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I need to check in. Have heard nothing since his loss to Kirkland.

Frank (Toronto)

Is Zab Judah a hall of famer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I dont even have the heart to ban you because that is so stupid to even contemplate that I fear for your safety that you have.

Brodus (Planet Funk)

Dan, are you on board with the Funkasaurus? If so, who should somebody call?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Your momma?

Boxingtitan (NYC (Big Apple))

Dan any work on prospect Shawn Porter next fight. At one point he was fighting every 3 months, haven't seen him recently.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Last I heard a month or so ago he was idle because of a lawsuit between him and promoter Prize Fight, which says it still has him under contract.

Gus (Hurst, Texas)

Who is Chris Arreola training with? I can't find anything online.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

His trainer is Henry Ramirez.

Samuel (Indianapolis)

any news on Erislandy Lara

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Do you ever read the notebooks or schedule?

Paul (Austin, TX)

Dan, Why is Berto/Ortiz in Vegas? Doubt they sell 2500 tickets to a great fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

That's where GB made a deal and I do think it will that many tickets, more probably.

Boxingtitan (NYC (Big Apple))

Hey Dan who is Lamont Peterson promoted by??

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

He is a free agent.

tom (sacramento)

any idea if HBO will put anything on March 3rd now that Rios card is moved. Gotta love Rios vs Gamboa.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

No, my understanding is no HBO show that night.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

In todays notebook you mentioned that the Gamboa camp need some convincing on the Rios fight, but I've read plenty of press releases from Oner and Gamboa himself that they are ready to take Rios right away next. Are they just playing the public?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Playing the public???? NO WAY!!!! A promoter and fighter would NEVER EVER do that right???????????

brian (ca)

Won't Mayweather also make a career-high payday against Pac even with a 50/50 split? How can he seriously use that an argument for Pac to take less than 50%?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

It's a losing argument.

Gem (San Antonio, Texas)

Is the lone star state ready for the return of Dan Rafael?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

It better be.

Darryl (LA)

Dan, I agree with the previous comment, Berto vs Ortiz doesn't belong in Vegas. It seems only Manny, Floyd, and Cotto vs a Mexican fighter are the only people that sell in Vegas. Why do they put good fights there, when the arena will be more than half empty?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

I didnt say the fight belonged there. I dont think it does either.

Van (Phoenix)

Thank you Showtime for Joel Diaz vs. Guy Robb, was one hell of a fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Exactly.

taco (tulsa)

what did you think of SOG as a commentator

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

He is good and will get better if he decides to focus more on it after his career.

hectorconga (NYC)

Danimal,How do you think Edwin Valero wouldve done against some of the top 140 lbs?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Hopefully not killed them like he did his wife.

Eric (Omaha)

If Judah couldn't beat a shower door, he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

John (UK)

Did you also laugh about Wlad's poisoned water excuse after his loss to Brewster?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Absolutely and ridiculed him for it. I covered that fight and I recall his lawyer trying to tell a gaggle of reporters about that and all of us basically laughing in his face. That was not their best night.

Chuck Giampa (Vegas)

I was poisoned during the ShoBox telecast.

RALPH (LONG ISLAND)

they should have olympic style water testing ....lol

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Dan, what is wrong with you today? That was a pretty cold comment about Edwin's wife.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

No, it was a pretty cold comment about the scumbag who killed her.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Some hype starting to form for a possible Donaire-Rigondeaux bout. ESPN had a feature on whether Rigo could handle Donaire. What's your take?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

My take is that it is fantasy land. That fight aint happening for a long long time if ever.

John (Phoenix)

ESPN FNF - Where you can see mediocre club fighters under the pretense that it is exciting because they both get hit and hit a lot!

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

A) Not true. Lot of top quality world class fighters. B) If you dont like, dont watch. C) Nothing wrong with unmitigated violence for fun on a Friday night in an action fight.

Tim (Denver)

Sounds like John in Phoenix doesn't understand how prize fighters are developed.

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

No, he just comes in the chat every week to complain about something. If he couldnt complain he would die. Complaining about boxing is like air to him.

Van (Phoenix)

I'm in no way related to John.

Bill (SF)

That Valero comment was the first time you really made me laugh, Dan. Well done.

Robert Pagan (Kandahar Afghanistan (US ARMY))

John from Pheonix...that harsh. Would you consider Ward and Emanuel Burton Bums. Thay didnt have exactly perfect records...yet pulledoff the fight of the year.

Don King (Flag Store)

Unmitigated violence televised on Friday nights for your entertainment? Only in America!

Samuel (Indianapolis)

how long was the longest chat you have done?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I went over 6 hours before as I recall from Cowboys Stadium on the day of the Pacquiao-Margarito fight.

Greg (columbus ohio)

John, must prefer to watch Toddlers and Tiaras over a fight between two grown men

Greg (columbus ohio)

John from Phx thought Wolak and Rorigues was a horrible fight

Nizzi (Des Moines)

That was an epic chat Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

As I recall I got a note from one of the SportsNation editors who informed that it was something like the 6th longest chat in ESPN.com history.

David (Cape Canaveral)

You R the KING OF CHATS...sucessfully submitted a question at 12:21 took my girl to lunch came back to catch the chat wrap...but you're still goin' strong....peds?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Just high on life!

SSG Robert Pagan (Kandahar Afghanistan (US ARMY))

Dan would you consider a Canelo vs Cotto fight a good fight ( mexico vs Puerto Rico) Is Cotto to wore down for that fight. I mean Canelo looked like he was getting all he could handle from Alfonso Gomez until he stopped him.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

I'd love to see Cotto-Canelo. Absolutely. Terrific fight.

Peter (ny)

That chat was longer then Kim K's marriage

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

LOL!

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks thanks for chatting today. Hope you all check out the stories of the week, the notebook and enjoy FNF tonight. Talk to you next week from San Antonio, where I will be covering Chavez-Rubio/Donaire-Vazquez Jr. Peace.
