Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:12 PM)

Sorry for being late, folks, had some technical difficulty. Let's not waste any time.

Sal (San Diego)

Hi Rich...How much do you think the Jets are willing to spend on a competitive back up for Sanchez? ala Matt Flynn...any chance they would spend big money and draft picks to move up in the draft? Thanks!

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

Flynn is going to cost major bucks and the Jets won't do that. They will look for a moderately priced backup (assuming no Peyton). They absolutely could move up in the draft.

Garth (NY)

Rich, I really feel Tannenbaum should have lost his job after this season. He gave Schotty a contract extension which he didn't deserve. He guaranteed Scott and Pace's contracts so he could create cap room to sign Asoumagh. He gave one of the worse contracts to Santonio Holmes, which everyone knew sooner or later would act up. Finally he cut the leaders and had no depth on the roster. He is clearly in over his head as a GM and should be fired or moved back to his old job managing the salary cap. Agree?

Rich Cimini
  (2:14 PM)

All valid points, but he doesn't deserve to be fired after 1 bad year. Remember, 2 straight trips to the AFC title game. He deserves a chance to fix it.

Bay Area Jets Fan (Bay Area)

Rich, which side of the ball would you like to see targeted on draft day 1st? Also, any chance Thomas sticks around next year?

Rich Cimini
  (2:16 PM)

Unless they get a shot at Trent Richardson, I would draft defense -- an OLB/pass rusher like Upshaw. Can't see Thomas back, coming off serious injury.

Peter (NY)

Which Jets are most likely not back next season? My guess would be Hunter, Mulligan, Leonhard, Burress, Tomlinson, Thomas, and Pool. I didn't include Scott and Pace because it doesn't make any sense to me to guarantee contracts and then cut them.

Rich Cimini
  (2:17 PM)

Burress and LT won't be back. Doubt that Pool and Thomas will be back. Leonhard, will be tough. Mully, doubt it. Hunter only if he takes a pay cut to be a backup.

Ben (NY)

Rich, there has been some rumors that the Jets might look to trade Dustin Keller. Any truth to them? I would think TE is the least of their concerns. If anything they should be looking to extend his contract.

Rich Cimini
  (2:18 PM)

I guess people figure Sparano doesn't use the TE all that much, but he never really had a TE like Keller. Can't see him going.

Bill (NY)

Hey Rich, Mark Sanchez's salary is due to be one of the highest cap values on the team next year. I know he will not take a pay cut, so is there anyway to rework his deal to make it a lower cap number.

Rich Cimini
  (2:21 PM)

He's due 8.5M in base salary, plus a 2.75M roster bonus in March. Only way to lower cap without taking a pay cut is to convert base salary into signing bonus, extend deal and pro-rate over remaining years -- and I don't think they'd be willing to use "the credit card," as they say in the biz.

Greg (NJ)

Rich, my opinion is that Peyton Manning will eventually retire. I feel like to play is just too much of a risk for him. However if he is released and is available do the Jets have the money to sign him. I also feel like there are just too many holes on the team for them to win with him.

Rich Cimini
  (2:22 PM)

Me, too, Greg, I think he'll retire. If he doesn't, the Jets will show some degree of interest. Odds of getting him? Slim to none.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich,I know you are covering this team a long time. To me this locker room trouble is the worth they have ever had. 1994 was real bad the last month but not like this year. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:23 PM)

Yeah, it was bad in 94, with Hasty, Brian Washington and that crew. They quit on Pete Carroll and along came Kotite. Ugh! You're right, this is probably worse.

Pete Blauvelt NY [via mobile]

Rich: do you think Parcells and Bellichuck knew something about Woody Johnson? Both seemingly wanted no part of him. Can't say I blame them.

Rich Cimini
  (2:24 PM)

Belichick left, in large part, because he thought the prez Steve Gutman was a stuffed shirt who knew nothing about football. Had nothing to do with Johnson. Parcells stuck around for a year to help Woody, so I don't think you can say he wanted no part of him.

Andy (Huntington, NY)

Rich - if the Jets had managed to squeak into the playoffs, how much of the negativity surrounding the team do you think would have become public? I have a theory that if the Red Sox had made the playoffs last season we'd be hearing the beer drinking, chicken eating, video game playing story years from now in someone's book rather than the immediate aftermath. And if losing brings out the dirty laundry, is it too much of a stretch to suggest this was somewhat a blessing in disguise for the Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (2:25 PM)

It's really hard to say, Andy. Eventually, I guess it would've come out, but it might have been a delay.

Ben (NY)

The Giants in their history seem to know how to draft dominate pass rushers. From Taylor to Strahan and now to the current dominate trio of JPP, Tuck, and Umenyiora. My question to you is how come the Jets can't see to find in free agency or draft that dominate pass rusher. The Jets have been missing that element to their defense for years now. Just imagine how much better Revis and Cromartie would be if the opposing QB had to take into account the presence of a pass rusher and game changer on each play.

Rich Cimini
  (2:27 PM)

If the Jets had JPP and Tuck, they'd be truly elite on defense. Part of it is because they've been drafting low. Part of it is because Rex is convinced he can make chicken salad out of you-know-what. Well, guess what? He can't. You need horses. This year, they will draft horses.

Sean (NYC)

Hi Rich, Any chance we see Braylon Edwards back next season?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

I don't think they'd revisit that situation until after the draft, if they're still looking for a WR.

John K (Brooklyn, NY)

Hi Rich, Thanks for sticking with us in the off-season. So, Jan. 27, 2012. Your prediction. What's the percentage chance we wind up with Manning?

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

I'd say only 10 percent. I think they'll be interested, but I suspect he'd want to play in warm weather. There are other reasons, too, why he'd pass on the Jets -- offense, Rex's loosey goosey style, Eli's town...

Alex (Queens NY)

would you prefer to see the likes of Danny Woodhead Sean Ellis and James Ihedigbo win the Superbowl or will you be rooting for the NY team ? lol

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

I don't root. Like most sports writers, we root for the best story. But I will admit I root for players, not teams. For instance, I wanted Pitt to advance because I like Cotchery.

Fla Diddy (NJ)

Rich - Any idea what Mario Williams will command on the open market? He seems like the more logical FA target than Peyton. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

Sounds like Hou will use franchise tag on Super Mario.

Kenny Debner (San Francisco)

Hi there Rich. I'm kind of at loss. Sparano is in to run the offense. Pettine now supposedly calls plays on defense. Westhoff has total control of special teams. I know this is how plenty of teams do it but...what does Rex actually do?

Rich Cimini
  (2:32 PM)

He's the CEO. Look, this is how it works on most teams. Coughlin and Belichick don't call plays, they just run the show.

Kicky (Kaymark, NJ)

What are the chances that Burress and Wayne Hunter return?

Rich Cimini
  (2:33 PM)

Burress -- 0 percent. Hunter is 50-50, depending on whether he agrees to a pay cut.

Carl De Groote (Amagansett, NY)

Hello Rich. In your time covering the beat, have you ever seen a Jets team that tore itself apart after the season ended like this one has?

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

No, I'd say this one takes the cake.

Newt (Lake Mary, FL)

Has Woody gone out and bought bigger black tarps in anticipation of the Giants' fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

Funny.

Mark D. (Yonkers, NY)

If you had to choose one player to pick from the Giants' roster that you would want on the Jets, who would it be? As a Giants fan I would want Darrelle Revis playing for the Giants.

Rich Cimini
  (2:37 PM)

That's a great question, Mark. If I were the Jets' GM and there was a draft where every player was available, I'd rank them as follows: 1. Eli, 2. JPP, 3. Cruz.

Ben (Fairfield, CT)

Rich, I think I am the only Jets fan who does not want Payton Manning on the team next year. I see 08 all over again with Brett Favre. He is a Dome QB and can't win in the playoffs. Sanchez has more road wins then he does over his whole career. What do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (2:38 PM)

It would be an all-or-nothing acquisition. You didn't mention Peyton's neck, that's the No. 1 issue. Plus, if you look at Peyton's last 3 yrs, they've been very good, but not great.

John (UES)

Thoughts on investing in the Safety position? For two straight years, Jim Leonard has gone down with an injury and the defense is just not the same/

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

I think they have to start fresh at safety. They need a big stud to cover Gronk.

Rob (Denver)

Just curious, do you see ex coaches, Herm, Mangini coaching again anywhere?

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

Mangini wants to get back in, but only if it's the ideal situation. Herm, no.

Ryan (NY)

Rich, do you think the chemistry issues -- overstated or not -- have obscured the serious talent questions on this team. It has serious issues at safety, linebacker, o-line, quarterback and no pass-rush.

Rich Cimini
  (2:40 PM)

Great point, Ryan. There is a talent issue -- RT, DL, LB, S.

George (NY)

Can you see the Jets signing someone like a Peytin Hillis to handcuff with Greene for a real rugged ground and pound type offense?

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

No, they need a speed back to complement Greene.

Matt Debes (Norwalk, CT)

Hey Rich - love your Jets coverage - who is likely to be the unofficial team captains next year - in terms of making/keeping the peace in the locker room? This team needs some leadership and someone who'll tell Rex to shut up with the bluster.

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

Thanks, Matt. You're already seeing Mangold stepping to the forefront in terms of leadership. Guys like him, Moore, Keller, Brick, Harris, Revis, Pouha (if he's back)...those are the guys that need to be leading.

Paul (Erie)

Any inside info on how the QB coach situation will play out. Keeping Cavanaugh, bringing in Daboll, someone else?

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

Still a fluid situation. Cavanaugh not a lock to return.

Rich (Long Island)

Rich, this draft is going to be a big one for the future of this team as some of the older players will be gone in 2012. Do you see the Jets drafting a WR at some point in this draft?

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

They have to...not necessarily in the first round, they need to develop a WR.

Gary Andace (North Arlington)

Rich, Point blank: if Manning tells Mr. T that he would play for the Jets, will they ditch Sanchez?

Rich Cimini
  (2:44 PM)

If the salary demand isn't outrageous and the neck checks out OK, yes.

Mark (NY)

Rich, Mike Tannenbaum likes to use free agency to fill the needs so he can go into the draft feeling good about the team and I guess take the best player available. I know the Jets will be active in free agency, but my question to you is do you think they will sign any impact free agents? On offense there are OG Ben Grubbs and Carl Nicks, and plenty of running backs and WRs. On defense there is Mario Williams, Cliff Avril, Calasis Campbell, Michael Griffin and LaRon Landry. Do you see the Jets showing any interest and pursing any of these players and if so which ones?

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

They shouldn't waste their money on a guard. You spend big money on impact positions, like pass rusher, WR, RT.

Tony Martone (Bloomfield, NJ)

hey rich. with the endless drama that's enveloped the last four weeks + Patriots and Giants in the Super Bowl, is this going to force Woody and Mr. T to have a wacky, spend spend spend off-season?

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

History suggests yes.

Marie (Kearny, NJ)

Do you buy Rex's comments about how "he didn't have a pulse on the team." Revis' recent comments certainly seem to back that up, but do you think it's a front to protect him a bit?

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

For the most part, yes. There may have been some petty stuff Rex didn't know about, but he had to know a lot of it.

George Richardson (NY)

What are your thoughts younger Jets who have shown flashes such as Kerely, Wilkerson, and Cumberland?

Rich Cimini
  (2:47 PM)

I like Kerley a lot. Wilkerson was ok, still has a ways to go. Cumberland has long-range potential, but coming back from a serious injury.

Carl De Groote (Amagansett)

Considering this has been as dramatic an off-season as we have ever seen, does that blame fall on Rex? and if so, do we put Rex on the hot seat in 2012? Does he have only shot of getting this team back on the right road?

Rich Cimini
  (2:48 PM)

As I wrote last Sunday, Rex has put himself on the hot seat with all these mea culpas. If they mess up again next yr, it'll all fall on him.

Rich Cimini
  (2:49 PM)

Sorry, folks, I'm gonna have to run here. Thanks for the great questions. We'll talk next week and get into the Super Bowl a little bit. Have a great weekend.
