Chat with Chad Ford

Chad Ford
  (1:01 PM)

Aloha and thanks for coming to the chat today. We'll start talking NBA in the first half and then in the second half of the chat we'll transition over into the NBA Draft. Let's roll ...

JRC (Illinois)

Is it finally time to trade Nash and Hill to start the rebuilding process?? Its gotta start sometime.............

Chad Ford
  (1:03 PM)

Yeah ... that time was two years ago when Robert Sarver decided he was running a WalMart instead of a Nordstroms. As it stands now, both guys have some value, but the Suns won't be getting back young stars in return. It's going to get uglier in Phoenix before it gets better.

Jesse (Detroit)

Why are the Pistons this bad? They played better last season when they had a mutiny going on.

Chad Ford
  (1:04 PM)

Team chemistry. Youth. There's talent there. I like Greg Monroe. Like Brandon Knight. Rodney Stuckey, Jonas Jerebko are good. Austin Daye has potential. They lack any real defensive presence in the middle and no one plays together. Best thing that could happen to Detroit is to win the lottery and get Anthony Davis. He'd immediately transform that team on both ends of the floor.

Blake (Chicago)

speaking of ugly situations, what is going to happen with Dwight in Orlando? Do you think God wants him on the Bulls???

Chad Ford
  (1:06 PM)

The question is ... does Dwight think God wants him on the Bulls. I don't think so. I think he was fine with a trade to NJ or the Lakers and still will be if Otis Smith wakes up before the deadline. If he goes to free agency, my money says that Dallas is the promised land.

jyra (Berlin, Germany)

Where do you see Kenyon Martin ending up?

Chad Ford
  (1:07 PM)

This seems to be a very hot question and the answer is ... does it really matter? I like Kenyon, but don't see him as the missing piece for anyone.

Doug (Boston)

Is KG moveable?

Chad Ford
  (1:08 PM)

Yes. Everyone on Boston is. The question is ... what can we move him for. The answer? Not much or Danny Ainge would have already moved him.

AJ (Twin-Cities)

Are you surprised with how well the Timberwolves are playing?

Chad Ford
  (1:09 PM)

No. Because I read John Hollinger and he called this before the season began. Ricky Rubio is the truth and Kevin Love is playing like a MVP candidate. Rick Adelman is a great coach. Those three things alone will get you far.

Wes (Frankfort, KY)

Do you and John Hollinger hang out much? What's he like?

Chad Ford
  (1:09 PM)

Coolest nerd I know.

John (Minneapolis)

Will the Wolves make the playoffs this year in your opinion?

Chad Ford
  (1:11 PM)

Possible. Pretty big scrum for those last few playoff spots in the West between the Spurs, Blazers, Grizzlies, Rockets, Jazz and Lakers. But the way the Wolves are playing ... I think they could be in that mix.

Rob (Chandler)

Is Jimmer really the most disappointing rookie in your book?

Chad Ford
  (1:14 PM)

Yes and no. I thought Westphal would be a good coach for him because he'd let Jimmer do what he does best ... fire away. On the downside, I was worried that there wouldn't be enough shots on that team. Well Westphal's gone, Jimmer can't be the alpha dog in Sacramento and Keith Smart isn't going to let Jimmer just launch at will. A big part of Jimmer's success was Dave Rose at BYU. He told me during the pre-draft camp that Jimmer plays well when he knows he can take any shot he wants. If he doesn't have that green light and begins to over think ... he struggles. Rose told me Jimmer's success would in large part rest on having a coach who believed in him and just let him play.

John (Streetboro)

Can you please admit how horribly wrong you were wrong with Rubio being better then Kyrie

Chad Ford
  (1:15 PM)

Debatable? Yes. Horribly wrong? I'm guessing Streetboro is somewhere in or near Cleveland.

Paul Silas (Bailey,NC)

Do you think they will fire me mid season, or at the end of the year?

Chad Ford
  (1:16 PM)

Depends on how badly MJ wants that No. 1 pick.

Drew (Charlotte)

What are the odds MJ takes Barnes of Davis in order to put fans in the seats with another tobacco road alum? I'd go all in on that bet.

Chad Ford
  (1:16 PM)

So maybe the Bobcats don't need the number one pick. If I'm Paul Silas, that makes me nervous.

Tyrone (Toronto)

Is Bargnani and All-Star?

Chad Ford
  (1:17 PM)

I'd choose Roy Hibbert over Bargnani.

Rich (Portland)

Your choice for Executive of the Year?

Chad Ford
  (1:18 PM)

Larry Bird has won multiple MVPs. He's won Coach of the Year honors. I think this is the year he brings home the Triple Crown and wins Executive of the Year. His patience in rebuilding this Pacers team has been remarkable and he's showing you can have a great team without a superstar. Is there anything Bird isn't good at?

Kory (Columbus, OH)

Who is the rookie in the NBA right now who would have been best served staying in school another year and why?

Chad Ford
  (1:20 PM)

Tristan Thompson probably doesn't regret going pro. He went No. 4 in the draft. But the first 20 games have shown he's still got a ways to go.

Craig (PA)

With every game that Eric Gordon misses (along with not signing an extension and minny's pick getting worse as they get better), does the killed lakers-rockets-cp3 deal look more like a legacy killer for stern?

Chad Ford
  (1:21 PM)

Stern's had so many legacy killers in the past few years ... it's hard to say any one thing will really be the tipping point. He got a good deal for CP3 at the time.

Dan (CA)

Where does that Blake Griffin dunk rate in your all time favorite dunks?

Chad Ford
  (1:24 PM)

The John Starks dunk over the Bulls front line and the Scottie Pippen dunk on Patrick Ewing are probably my two favorite in game dunks. But that's old school ... and back in a time when those two teams hated each other and the dunks took on even more significance. That said ... it was awesome. I've watched it like a 100 times.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

How do guys like Geoff Petrie keep their jobs? I thought being a Meteorologist is the only profession where you can continuously get things wrong but keep your job.......

Chad Ford
  (1:26 PM)

Didn't you read the Maloof interview? He's like family to the Kings. You don't fire family, no matter how badly the screw it up for everyone else. That is great family advice by the way. It's also why hiring family is such a bad idea in business.

kurtis, tx [via mobile]

Other than Dwight Howard and possibly Deron Williams, what other players could you see traded before the deadline. Also will Darryl Morey and the Rockets make any moves?

Chad Ford
  (1:27 PM)

Well, Chris Kaman looks like he's gone. Gotta believe Pau Gasol will be gone for the right deal. Knicks shopping Amare hard, but his non-insured contract is a major issue. The entire Celtics team is on the block.

vic (no cal)

I loved the Blake dunk -- but #1 for me will always be Vince Carter over that poor 7'0" Frenchman in the Olympics. Blake posterized Kendrick Perkins, but Vince did something surreal -- something I didn't think would/could be done in a game.

Chad Ford
  (1:29 PM)

Frederic Weis ... good call. NBA TV did a nice montage of the greatest in game dunks of all time last night and I thought that one stood out as the biggest one they missed. Maybe the didn't have the rights. Amazing dunk.

Damon (Santa Cruz)

Are the Jazz contenders or pretenders? If they are the latter, what could they do to become a legit threat?

Chad Ford
  (1:30 PM)

Somewhere in between right now ... but the future is very, very bright for them.

John B (Sac, CA)

Is there any hope for Sacramento in the next two to 3 years besides staying in Sacramento? Any players besides Cousins with decent trade value? My koolaid is running low.

Chad Ford
  (1:32 PM)

Didn't you read the Maloof interview, John? For the eighth straight year, they're thrilled with the direction the team is going. The Maloof's are gamblers. Guess they really do love the lottery.

Lisa (San Diego)

I'm tired of just seeing your Top 100 every week. I want a MOCK DRAFT!

Chad Ford
  (1:34 PM)

Fair enough. ESPN.com just launched our Mock Draft Lottery Machine today. Go and play to your heart's content ... http://espn.go.com/nba/lottery2012/mockdraft

David (Fort Worth)

Are most GM's telling you Anthony Davis is no. 1 overall? I agree with you that he should be no. 1 but a lot of sites out there can't get over Andre Drummond despite his lack of production.

Chad Ford
  (1:35 PM)

Hate to kill the suspense ... but Anthony Davis shows up No. 1 every time you play the Mock Draft Machine. Regardless of what team gets the No. 1 pick. Just talked with a head scout or GM from every team in the league. All of them have Anthony Davis No. 1.

Some guy (Some place)

Chad, say out of all the teams in the bottom 10 right now. Which team would benefit the most from a guy like Anthony Davis. When I say benefit the most I mean turn it around quickly, ie potentially make the playoffs?

Chad Ford
  (1:36 PM)

Easy. The Pistons. He'd be a great, great fit next to Greg Monore in Detroit.

Julius ( Atlanta)

Okay, so Davis is #1, my question is who does he compare to at this moment?

Chad Ford
  (1:37 PM)

He's a very unique player. He's some sort of hybrid between Kevin Garnett and Marcus Camby.

Craig (SLC)

Is there a better fit for Kidd-Gilchrist that the Jazz (via Warriors pick)? A wing trio of Burks, Hayward, and Gilchrist would be stout.

Chad Ford
  (1:38 PM)

Kidd-Gilchrist is a good fit for any team. He plays so hard every night, defends multiple positions and just cares about winning and team over individual accolades. Dave Telep told me he's been like that his whole high school career. Yes, he still is an emerging offensive player ... but not sure how you go wrong with a guy like that.

James F. (Palestine, Texas)

Chad, watched a couple University of Washington games this year, looks to me that Terrence Ross has BIG TIME NBA potential. Your thoughts?

Chad Ford
  (1:39 PM)

Love Ross's potential, though I'm not sure I'd put big time in all caps like you did. Wish his production, on a consistent basis, always backed that up.

David (Fort Worth)

What do GM's say about Jeremy Lamb? I think he should be in the top 5 and would be huge for teams like Detroit, Cleveland and New Orleans.

Chad Ford
  (1:40 PM)

A few have him in the Top 5. 6-10 more likely. Cleveland is the best fit of the three you mentioned. Jazz and Suns are two other teams where he'd be a good fit.

Chris (Oregon)

The draft machine keeps saying Portland will take Tyler Zeller. Please tell me that isn't true. Also, is that lottery pick assuming they don't make the playoffs or is that a pick they aquired from another team?

Chad Ford
  (1:42 PM)

Lottery Machine automatically updates to current standings. If season ended last night, Blazers would not be in the playoffs and thus ... have the 14th pick in the draft. Zeller won't be a superstar, but the guy really runs the floor and he gets better every year. You're not getting a franchise changer at No. 14.

Fujii (Oakland, CA)

In the lotto mock machine, the GS Warriors don't show up in the scenario, with New Jersey getting their pick I believe. Don't the Warriors keep their pick if it is top 7? If so, the scenario in the machine does not adjust.

Chad Ford
  (1:44 PM)

Jazz get the Warriors pick if it's not in the top 7. Currently their pick sits at No. 8 after last night's win. Other trades that affect the lottery? Hornets have the Wolves pick unprotected. Rockets get the Knicks pick if not in the Top 5.

mark (cleveland )

Is Sullinger athletic enough to play the 4 in the NBA?

Chad Ford
  (1:45 PM)

That's the question. I've got my concerns. Love his game, but it worries me.

Tim (Toronto)

Chad, you haven't answered a Raptors question all year. Have you decided to have mercy on yourself and stop watching the poor saps? Either way, wouldn't Jeremy Lamb, Harrison Barnes or MKG look pretty perfect from a Toronto perspective?

Chad Ford
  (1:46 PM)

Yes. I think they'd still take Anthony Davis one if they got the pick and figure out how to play him, Jonas Valanciunas and Andrea Bargnani together. But if they don't get No. 1 -- they'll have a tough choice between Harrison Barnes and MKG. Barnes is a much better offensive player, MKG brings all the intangibles.

Jackson (Indiana)

Looking at the trade machine with Cody Z going 7th. People thinking he's going to leave after his first year, or the machine based purely on draft rankings?

Chad Ford
  (1:47 PM)

Based purely on draft rankings. If Zeller doesn't declare for the draft, we'll pull him out. Right now that machine assumes everyone eligible is in.

Krod (MA)

Simmons said in his most recent article that having the 20th pick in this draft is like having the 10th pick in a normal draft. From a draft expert's perspective, how true is that?

Chad Ford
  (1:48 PM)

Draft is pretty deep. If everyone declares? He might be right.

Matt (DC)

Nobody needs intangibles as a team more than the Wizards, Chad. Why would they take BARNES over MKG?

Chad Ford
  (1:49 PM)

Have you watched the past few offseasons for the Wizards?

Terrence Jones (Kentucky)

Why doesn't anyone like me anymore?

Chad Ford
  (1:49 PM)

Because scouts are settling in on a comp for you ... and it's Antoine Walker.

Aaron (Seattle)

Where is Tony Wroten at on most team's boards now?

Chad Ford
  (1:50 PM)

All over the place. Crazy, crazy talent. Very, very wild. He's the type of player who could be a home run or a strikeout depending on the situation he's in. I know a few teams who have him in their Top 10. A few more that have him out of their Top 30.

Jarrod (Superior)

Is it unrealistic to say that I see Perry Jones' ceiling being LaMarcus Aldridge?

Chad Ford
  (1:52 PM)

That's not a bad call, though I think Jones sees himself as more of a perimeter player. Did you read the great Dave Telep's blog on him a few days ago? This is why he scares so many GMs. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/dave-telep/post?id=872

Bradley (Beal)

I can't wait to slip to the bottom half of the lottery and then prove everybody wrong

Chad Ford
  (1:52 PM)

He's the one guy who, on talent, probably should be a lot higher. He's a weird fit on that Florida team.

Mike Scott (Charlottesville, VA)

Chad, no Top 100 love? What do I need to do to impress you?

Chad Ford
  (1:53 PM)

Grow three inches and turn back the clock three years.

Austin Rivers (California)

Will I enter the draft this year?

Chad Ford
  (1:53 PM)

I hope not. You really need another year to learn how to play without the ball in your hands all the time.

Jamie (Portland)

Harrison Barnes' lack of elite athleticism makes it tough enough for him to dominate at the college level, and it will only get harder in the NBA. He reminds me more of Joe Johnson than Paul Pierce.

Chad Ford
  (1:54 PM)

Joe Johnson and Danny Granger are good comps. But why so down on those comps? Both were All-Stars.

Tim (Columbia)

Why does everyone think it's funny/unique/whatever to post a question using a player's name?

Chad Ford
  (1:55 PM)

Chad (Hawaii): It's totally weird. Right?

Marvin B (Ohio)

Do you ever regret moving to Hawaii?

Chad Ford
  (1:56 PM)

Never. Have you been to Hawaii?

Chad Ford
  (1:56 PM)

Gotta run everyone. Big Draft package on ESPN.com NBA page today including our Lottery Mock Draft Machine, a column on who Anthony Davis would fit with all 14 teams in the lottery plus an updated Top 100. Have fun.
