Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Let's get rolling, everyone.

Robert (Parksville, BC Canada)

If Al Sauders gets the OC for the Chiefs, will Zorn quit?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

The Kansas City Star reported that Zorn may get if he is not promoted. Howeverm he and Saunders worked in Baltimore together in 2010. So perhaps there will be a comfort lvel there.

Justin (New Braunfels, TX)

What's up Bill, another great Thursday. We all know The Raiders have the talent in place on the field. I like the new GM but not sold at all on their decision to hire Allen (especially at what was available). What's your take?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Yes, another great Thursday ... I think Allen will be good, but I can't lie. The staff has been a but underwhelming thus far, but it is not done yet.

Gabe (Schenectady, NY)

Hey bill read your blog everyday great stuff keep it up!What news have you heard of denvers change to Orange jerseys as their primary in 2012, but ive heard a lot of speculation that they may alter their whole look a lot like the bills in '11. What say you?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Thanks, Gabe. It was reported several months ago that orange will become the team's primary home jersey in 2012 and I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

Dayton (Sioux Falls)

Could you see Denver taking the talented Vontaze Burfict at pick 25 if he falls because of his issues?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

He's probably more of a 3-4 guy, but he is a real talent. I could see KC or the Chargers taking a real look at him. He is the type of guy who will likely zoom up the draft board after the combine.

Todd (Iowa)

Get a NT in FA and then trade down and take Hightower around pick 17 for the Chiefs. Sound about right? Scary front 7

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

Sounds good to me.

Mark Yang (Davis, CA)

Bill. What are the odds of the Raiders getting Winston Moss as DC and Darren Perry as DB Coach. also, what are the odds of the raiders re-signing mike bush and then trading him for draft picks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I don't think Moss would want to be a DC somewhere that turned him down for the head-coach job. It seems Oakland is focusing on Green Bay cornerback coach Joe Whitt right now, ... As for Bush, if they franchise, I think they will keep him. But if there were overwhelmed, it could happen.

Jose (Silver and Black)

Why didn't the Raiders interview Mike Zimmer? And seriously, Greg Knapp? And seriously, Manusky? Come on, should have kept Saunders and went after a real DC.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Zimmer for HC?So you aren't happy with the moves, huh?

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Why do the Raiders continue to recycle coordinators whose units performed less than stellar there first tour in Oakland. First it was Bresnahn on defense, and now Knapp on offense. Have never been impressed with Knapp.

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Another happy customer ... I'd focus on Knapp's time with Allen in Atlanta rather than Knapp's time in Oakland. That was an awful offense. Clearly, Allen beleives in Knapp, so I think this hire deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Charles Medford, Oregon [via mobile]

Are the raiders really the team to beat in the AFC west? I'm a raider fan and I actually think they are the team to beat. I feel like they are the best progressing team in the AFC west. I feel like there Identity will be made this year? How do you think they will do with the challenges next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I think all four temas are very closely bunched. That's why we had three 8-8 teams and one 7-9 team. So, it would be difufclt to say one team is progressing more than the other. But with that said, I like where the Chiefs are going.

rocky (ny)

if I were a position coach and my team didnt let me interviews for a promotion id be really frustrated. do coaches pressure their teams t let them interview elsewhere

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

What can they do? This has become a trend in the past year or so. Teams just don't want to lose assistants late in the process. it's February and it's late in the process.

Robert (Parksville, BC Canada)

Who would be the better play caller? Zorn or Saunders? Or would the pair work together to make a great team? I don't seem to recall the offense in Baltimore being that fantastic when they were both there.

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Probably go with Saunders ... I think the Saunders-Zorn pairing with work.

kevin (Boulder)

Do you think that havuing Del Rio as the broncos DC could draw in some good FA's?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I don't think it would hurt. I think Del Rio was the best possible hire. I think Denver's defense will be in good shape with Fox and Del Rio leading it.

Biggs (Springfield, MO)

Help me out Bill, why aren't the Chiefs at the top of the list trying to aquire Peyton Manning IF infact he can still play 2-4 years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Mel Kiper put the Chiefs on a list of potential Manning homes. I don't know if I see it. I think they are better fits.

Jeremy (Georgetown)

What are the chargers biggest draft needs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Matt (San Diego)

What are the chances that Antonio Gates gets into Canton? Will his recent health issues and lower productivity prevent him from achieving this?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

It's difficult for tight ends to get in. Winning a Super Bowl would help. I think he could get in either way, but it may take a while.

Alex (Oakland)

Do you think the Raiders have the right players on the defensive side (today) in order to make the playoffs next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I think they need help at linebacker, cornerback, safety.

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I think they need help at linebacker, cornerback, safety.

Matt (DC)

Hi Bill, do you see the Raiders making a run at deep threat WR, maybe Mario Manningham of the Giants?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

I know some people think they need a big-time WR but I'd like to see the Raiders develop their young receivers and then use their money elsewhere.

Steve (San Diego)

What do you think happens with Vincent Jackson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Just a feeling, but I think he gets a long-term deal there. I think Dean Spanos owes it to the fans to show he means business and securing Jackson would help.

robert (forty fort PA)

Why do you think Allen is having a hard time finding a DC? do you think its because he dosn't know many people in the leage being young and all?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

It's killed him that he was denied permisison so much. He had a plan, but he's been blocked and now he is down to, at least, his fifth choice. It doesn't mean this will be a bad hire, but it the process has been difficult.

Matt (Atlanta)

Any chance KC could trade up to get RG3?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Pioli hasn't shown he likes to move up and I think, there is grearer needs than QB.

Peter (NYC)

From what you have seen or heard does Stanzi have what it takes to be an NFL QB?

Ed (michigan)

Hi Bill. What do you see from the Chiefs LB- Justin Houston in year two? He sure did come on late his rookie year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

It's early in his career, I'd like to see him take the next step and become the No. 2 this year. If he is going to make a move at some point, he needs to start moving up the wrung. On Houston: Potential stardom. I love his talent. He can be the goods and he is a big reason why there is so much excitement over this defense.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Is Rolando McClain going to be around next season to play in the middle of the Raiders defense? What is the latest on his legal issues?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Inever feel comfortable specualting on what will happen in the legal system .. But as far as football goes, he will get another couple of years to prove himself. But there is no doubt, he needs to get better in a hurry.

Jacob (San Diego)

Should the Chargers draft a good safety or move jammer to safety and draft some CB's?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

The plan is to keep Jammer at CB. I think the Chargers will target a strong safety, maybe in free agency. Oakland's Tyvon Branch and Washington's LaRon Landry could be targets. If not, perhaps San Diego will look at Alabama's Mark Barron if he is there at No. 18.

Shaun (Erie)

As I Giants fan, I just wanted to thank the raiders(whom I like) for taking McClain in the 2010 draft, that allowed the Giants to take JPP. They would have taken McClain if he was there.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Well, there you go.

Don (Berkeley, CA)

Who among the receiving corps should the Raiders cu ties with? Louis Murphy was very disappointing this season and DHB cannot consistently hold onto the ball and become a go to receiver.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I think we may have seen the last of Chaz Schilens in Oakland. Housh was just a Hue thing. The Raiders can't give on DHB now that he showed life and Murphy can still be an effective backup.

Ed (michigan)

Does Cam Thomas become a fulltime starter next year for the Chargers? What is his ceiling?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

He showed good signs last seaosn. He has a chance to be good.

Fernando Z (Shafter)

Do you see the Raiders moving from a Power blocking scheme to a zone blocking? Any free agents you see the Raiders pursing strongly?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

That's a question I'm sure Dennis Allen will be asked soon. Pollack ran it in Houston, so it's a possibility. McFadden wasn't great in that system when Oakland ran it previously, but I think he has developed so nicely, he'd be fine.

Thiago (Sao Paulo)

Bill, what teams do you see being a better fit for Peyton than the Chiefs and why? If he were to go to KC, he would have a probable top 10 defense and easily a top 10 offense.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I think he ends up in Washington.

Brian (Council Bluffs)

Any running backs in the draft that would fit well with Charles in KC?

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Trent Richardson would be nice. It would be a major commitment, but it wou;ld be a nasty peiring.

Mick (Harrisburg, PA.)

Hello Bill, Since the Raiders don't have many picks in the draft what do think their strategy will be to acquire good players?

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Hit Free agenjcy for a few guys.

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you next week. Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday.BW.
