Ok, let's get this rolling.
Could this be the best class of WR recruits in CFB history? At least on paper, so far.
Since the advent of recruiting services, it's up there. At least on paper. OU basically is bringing in 4 of the Top 20 WRs, arguably the No. 1 WR from last year, and perhaps the No. 1 juco WR. Remember though, we were calling the 2008 haul the best WR class in OU history. The best of that group turned out to be Dejuan Miller, and he was a career backup. I like the potential of this group much better. But let's wait and see what happens.
I am very confident in the OU offense this fall, how good do you think the defense can be?
The key will be the d-line. With Wort and Nelson, I feel good about the LBs, and I'm confident Mike Stoops will shore up a secondary that has some very good players (Jefferson, Hurst, Colvin). But I don't see a difference-maker up front (Alexander, Ronnell, Gerald McCoy) next season at the moment. Somebody has to step up for this defense to become elite. Jordan Phillips, R.J. Washington and Chaz Nelson, you're on the spot.
What do you think OU's chances are with DeVonte Neal?
Depends on whether they can get him in for a visit this weekend. If so, I like OU's chances a lot. If not, OU basically has no shot.
Yo J-Trot, We're chillin' here on the beach in sunny So-Cal talking about the incoming Cali Sooners. Has Mike-dog or Kish-iester helping snagging the Cali JuCo recruits? Do you see this as a trend for Stoops to keep dipping into Cali talent?
I believe that when Bob decided to hire Kish, he had this in mind. Kish is known for his recruiting prowess of the west coast. If Bob had his way, he would like to bring in 2-3 California recruits every year. This is very possible now, with Kish, the Cali trio, and Taylor McNamara and Derrick Woods all on campus.
Trotter, OState's recruiting class looks criminally under rated. Is Lil Mikey G doing more with plays than Big Bad Bob? Or is it my imagination that the Sooner's just aren't playing well consistently? We've got to fix this. I threw up during Bedlam last season.
According to the recruiting services, OState didn't have a good class. Then again, the class that included Justin Blackmon wasn't highly ranked either. OSU has done a fabulous job developing its talent. But OU has done fairly well in this area here, too (Remember Sam Bradford?). I would chalk up last year as an anomaly rather than a trend.
Is Trey Metoyer ever going take the field in Crimson and Creme? Or will he flunk out this Spring, again...
Metoyer will be fine. Going to Hargrave Military is not an easy deal. As Norvell pointed out last week, Trey is going to be better off having gone through that experience.
It drives me to drink how excited I get thinking of unleashing Geno and the 'eers on that wicked stiff (LOL) Sooner secondary. If you called it today, what would be your spread on my Mountaineers and Sooners??
Dana, first take a timeout from the Red Bulls. Assuming the game is in Morgantown, I'd favor OU by 2-3 points. No more than that.
Is there anyone among the recruits that can add some spark to either return game? While Ryan Broyles' absence in the passing game was well documented, his absence on punt returns was also noticeable.
OU is bringing in several guys who could help here. Sterling Shepard was a great returner in high school. Same with Daniel Brooks, who is the fastest player of anyone OU signed. I could see both those guys helping out immediately in what has been a lackluster return game.
Jake, Good Mexican is tough to find around here. Taco Cabana works in a pinch. Now remember we've been eating the good stuff for a few years. What are your top 3 Mexican joints in OKC metro?
1. 1492 in Midtown. After that, three-way tie for second between Ted's, Poblano Grill and Tarahumara.
Any news on DeVante Neal?
I believe he's supposed to discuss things with his family tonight and firm up his visits. He could be visiting OU this weekend. We'll see.
Who else could OU still sign besides Davante Neal?
Neal is probably it.
Jake, I have been recruiting kids from all of the country - 5 from CA, 4 from FL, 5 from TX and 8 other states. Do you think this makes it hard to assimilate the recruits into the Sooner team culture? Or is the diversity good for the team?
Coach, shouldn't you be at the driving range? The Pro-AM is coming up soon. There's pros and cons to this. Getting guys from different places can be a good thing -- if you're getting the right guys. If you're getting a bunch of cancers, it can derail your entire team. We saw this with OU recruiting California in the 80s. That contributed to Switzer ultimately leaving.
Aside from Ben Habern, Jaz Reynalds, and Dom Whaley, who else is expected to miss spring ball?
FB Aaron Ripkowski will be out. As of now, I believe that's it, though a couple more of the veterans will have come cleanups and sit out, I'm sure. If they don't get cleanups, I expect OU to take it easy with Kenny Stills, Tony Jefferson, Tom Wort and Brennan Clay, who all played hurt for much of the season.
Have you heard if Trey Metoyer is working with Landry any? Would feel better if I knew they (all the OU receivers) were getting together routenly with Landry.
That will be taking place from now until August.
When should we find out Devante Neal's final official visit school?
Maybe tonight or tomorrow.
Will OU be posting their winter testing results? I liked seeing the 40 times and lifting numbers from before.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I'll try to get at least the best times and results from every position before spring ball begins.
who do you see starting at DE and who do you see in the rotation at DE?
David King and R.J. Washington are the favorites, with Chaz Nelson having a chance to unseat them. I feel like if the staff was confident Geneo and Chuka were ready to play, they wouldn't have gone out and signed a JUCO DE. Both Geneo and Chuka have talent, but I see King/Washington/Nelson opening the season as the top 3 ends.
What are the chances we get DGB?
Bold prediction: Damien Williams will rush for 1,500+ yards and 20 tds.Too much?
When did Damien Williams turn into Adrian Peterson?
What is the chance of Oklahoma getting Davante Neal???
Today, somewhere in the 20-40 percent range. Higher if he visits. Lower if he doesn't.
In addition to the point you made in your Triple Option this morning about the possibility for a third FSU game, I feel that such a game is really high-risk, low-reward. We saw this in this year's game, which was a very hard-fought, difficult road victory against an opponent playing very well. You win, it's just same old FSU and the win will be downgraded as just another example of FSU failing to meet expectations. You lose, you're virtually eliminated from the title picture and get to be the loser of yet another big game. Wouldn't it be better for OU to either schedule a cupcake or a big name with a little more credibility? I'd rather have a sure win or a real resume booster than the in between risk FSU seems to present.
Sadly, I agree. Strength of schedule just doesn't have the impact on the rankings it used to. Look at Oklahoma State this year. The CPUs showed that the Cowboys played a tougher slate than Alabama, but the Tide still made it to the title game. That's why OU is not going to schedule more than one marquee non-conference opponent a year.
I thought DGB signed with Missouri?
What is the deal with terrell mitchell?
For those of you that have forgotten, Mitchell was the TE that committed to OU in the fall pending medical clearance. I believe he ended up with Florida Atlantic.
have you heard any nfl news on tony jefferson or kenny stills in terms of where they might get drafted?
Too soon for that. But I like Jefferson's stock better than Stills' right now. Only the elite of the elite WRs get taken in the first couple of rounds.
Which receiver is more likely to step up for the Sooners and provide depth and production on the outside, Neal, Gardner, or Metoyer? Or do you think the Sooners need two of the incoming receivers to have an impact, and make plays?
I give a slight edge to Metoyer. He'll have the advantage of spring ball going into the fall. After that, Neal, then Gardner. But all three should play next season. Maybe Sterling Shepard, too, if he shows he can help OU in the slot.
I'm probably in the minority on this, but the O-line still doesn't generate much confidence with me. They just some seem to be as tough and nasty as the 08 group. Do you see considerable improvement for next year?
I actually really like OU's o-line going into next season. Adam Shead is a rising star at guard, and I think he'll give the group some of that Duke Robinson toughness you mentioned. The group is really deep and experienced on the interior with Habern, Ikard, Evans, Shead, Irwin, Nila. The key will be tackle. Can Lane Johnson make a smooth transition to left tackle? And will someone step up on the right side (Williams, Thompson, Latu)?
I don't really look at whether a recruit is 5 stars or the hype they bring just based on the many breakout players in the previous five years, ex: Bradford, Blackmon. Who stands out to you having an immediate impact on the team? I'm thinking perhaps Gardner and Williams.
On defense, Kass Everett for sure at CB, and probably Nelson at DE. Offensively, any one of the WRs, Williams, Latu, and all of the TEs, since OU doesn't have any returning.
I saw your post on the D front. If you called the spread today, how many points would you give me, the Horns D, and all those amazing running backs we have on the Forty?
Until Texas starts a decent QB, I'm starting to wonder if that will ever happen again, OU will continue to be favored.
Jake I bet you dread this chat every week, is that why you schedule it on Mondays to get it over with?
No way. Highlight of my week.
Jake, I think your chat has been invaded by the whole Big XII blog. They just wish they were Sooners!
I think they just crave my wisdom.
Do you think any of the new running backs will take carries/playing time away from Whaley, Finch, and Clay?
Whaley was the only one of those guys built to sustain 20-plus carries, and he's coming off a fractured ankle. Williams won't take anyone's carries, but will keep the other guys from taking too much of a pounding.
Running backs - who do you have as the front 3 RB's in the rotation starting this fall.
Finch, Clay and Williams. Whaley eventually, but will he be 100 percent for the opener? Not sure about that.
This may come off sounding like sour grapes, but all the hype I heard about DGB leading up to signing day didn't really match the video of him i saw of him for first time on signing day. He didn't look like a fluid athlete and actually seemed a little clumsey with his route running and body control. He just looked much bigger than everyone else he was on the field with. I'd rather have a guy that moves like Ryan Broyles. Your thoughts?
Is DGB a finished product? No. But I'll take his measurables and hope for the best any day of the week.
J-Trot, I crave your wisdom. How many non-Belldozer snaps will Bell get?
Next season? Zero, unless Landry gets hurt.
I don?t get the impression that Notre Dame is a top 10 or top 15 team. Heck, they might not even be a legitimate top 20 team by the end of the 2012 season. Since the game is in Norman, a victory will not earn OU ooc bonus bcs points. Why, then, should they not paly FSU again?
Notre Dame might not be a Top 15 team, but that win looks good on paper to the voters. Why play Florida State again? Beating a program like that three years in a row is really tough. I wouldn't jack around with such karma.
Sounds like you aren't all that high on Williams, can you explain?
No, I'm very high on him. But he's not rushing for the 2,000 yards and 30 TDs some fans have already penciled him in for.
What should Landry REALLY work on?
Footwork. His footwork is the weakness of his game.
Trevor Knight seems to have a lot of leadership skills already, I'm hoping sometime in the future I'm able to see him because that's an aspect that to me, has been lacking at the QB position. Don't get me wrong Bradford was an amazing QB and Landry is a solid one as well, but they don't appear to have that animated leadership style that other QB's have had. It just seems that the players really do feed off that and it can change the morale on the sideline.
The previous question mentioned what Landry should be working on... another answer to that is body language. Landry's body language is awful sometimes, especially when you compare it to Robert Griffin's, Brandon Weeden's.
And yes, Knight sounds like a potential great leader. Something Bob Stoops raved about last week.
I see you mentioned newcomer Chaz Nelson as needing to help on the edge? But do you think Nathan Hughes will see the field at all this year to help RJ Washington & Co provide the Sooners with a pass rush?
It's possible, but he's not someone I've heard the coaches say much about. Geneo and Chuka were above him on the depth chart last season, so he's a ways away from playing.
A lot of talk about OU/Rutgers home-and-home. Have you heard anything about it? We would really welcome it - we know OU would probably take us to the woodshed but how could you not want to play a program like OU. Would there be some excitement in OK for it?
Bob Stoops acknowledged last week that OU has been talking to Rutgers, but he also said OU has been talking to a lot of people. He said it's been really hard lining up non-conference games with the uncertainly of West Virginia joining the Big 12. My guess is that OU ends up playing somebody from the Big East, because those programs will be in need of games if WV bails to the Big 12 in 2012.
J-Trot, Let's talk secondary. Tech, Baylor, Ok State - three trips to the medicine cabinet. Now we get WVU and TCU. ISU might be decent. Bevo might rediscover the forward pass. Seriously, what do you see our record as this year given the prolific offenses we face in the Big 12??
That's why Bob went out and hired his brother. Mike should make an immediate impact on the secondary. Will OU be good enough to win the national title next season? I'd bet against it. But I'd also bet that OU doesn't give up the passing yardage it did to Baylor, Tech and OSU next season.
As a Die-Hardest III Sooner fan, if Landry were to get hurt, would Allen or Bell step in?
Tomorrow, Allen. Next season, we'll see.
Other than Notre dame who could we possibly see on the non confrence schedule? And any chance we get rid of the hurry up offense and get back to a more basic smashmouth playaction offense?
OU signed 27 wide receivers for a reason. The spread isn't going anywhere.
Which of our WRs might help out OU as DBs this year if needed?
It wouldn't shock me if Daniel Brooks gets to moved to corner. Sterling Shepard is a possibility, too. I doubt the Sooners move both of them. They need one of those two to fill the role of Ryan Broyles long term in the slot.
with the signing of TREVOR KNIGHT Dual-threat quarterback, is Stoops looking to change the offense in the near future?
The last three QBs OU has signed have been dual-threat players. No question, Stoops is looking for more mobility from his QBs.
had an epiphany this morning after the super bowl last night... Ryan Broyles would be a perfect fit for the Patriots what do you think? Small quick with great route running and great hands..fits their system perfectly no?
If the Pats don't resign Wes Welker, then yeah, I could see that.
Hey Jake. I have asked this before, and I don't want to harp on it, but does anyone know or have asked Coach Stoops if Josh is going to come out of the box to help Landry on the sidelines during games. He gets rattled to easily like in the OKS game. When Landry is in his ear, he seems to do much better like the 10 season.
It's something that's being considered. I'm sure OU will tinker with that in the spring.
Guys, that's all the time we have this week. Thanks for the all questions. Sorry I couldn't get to all of them. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
