Hey Everyone...let's get this started!
Say that St. Louis trades down and RG3 goes #2 in the draft. In your opinion, which pick, if they meet their potential, helps the Vikes the most: Kalil, Claiborne, Blackmon, other?
I think I would go 1. Kalil 2. Claiborne 3. Blackmon. I need to do more work on him, but Blackmon doesn't seem like a Calvin J/Andre J type of prospect to me coming out of school. LT would be huge for Ponder-and that entire OL.
What are your thoughts on getting rid of the pro bowl game?
I haven't watched it in years...which I guess says a lot. But by all accounts, it is a total joke. I would rather see some sorts of skills comp
MDub, how do you think Mario Williams would fit in with the Cowboys? If they did acquire him in FA would it be best to switch to a 4-3?
Well he played the D Ware role for Wade Philips in HOUS. I don't see Williams as a fit in Dallas. And I doubt they switch schemes just too accommodate him.
Matt - Bon Scott or Brian Johnson?
Both a strong, but Scott.
Hey Matt, Miami signs Peyton Manning and doubles down by drafting Ryan Tannehill (moving back into late 1st round to nab him). Thoughts?
Sounds like overkill considering all the other needs MIA has including RT, WR and several key components to switching to a 4-3 such as a pure DE and WLB.
Have you heard any rumors about Felix Jones getting traded? If so will it be before the 2012 draft?
Have not heard that, but I don't know that you could get enough value for Felix. He is a good player-when healthy. Would you really deal him for say, a 4th round pick?
Is there any scenario where Blackmon starts falling to the point where the Bears move up from 19 and get him or is Blackmon a sure fire top 5 pick?
Clearly the Top WR and a lot of teams need WR help. Top 5? Not FOR SURE, esp if he doesn't run great, but not sure that he could fall to the point where it makes sense for CHI to make such a move either.
Isn't Matt flynn being over-hyped for one game? Or is it just because he is a free agent that he is getting so highly connected to teams as the answer to qb problems?
Both. But he has performed well when given an opportunity. I just don't see a real high ceiling. I think someone overpays.
Hey Matt, Where do you Tolbert eventually signing? Wouldn't he be deadly in a high powered offense like NE or GB?
He could be potent anywhere. Not sure SD can let him go though. I still think he isn't a true #1 RB and with Mathews' durability issues, SD needs a guy like Tolbert.
seems like too many are blaming wes welker for that 'drop'. are there too many brady apologists?
To me, Welker was more to fault for that one specific play than Brady, not that it was a great pass.
Atlanta did it for Julio Jones from 27 to 6, but it cost them 5 picks. Is Blackmon's potential much higher then Jones?
I didn't think it was worth it for ATL last year either. I bet Jones is bigger and more explosive. Blackmon more polished right now. Jones has their higher ceiling.
Lets say the Colts and Peyton are able to restructure his contract. What teams would be actively pursuing peyton, and in your opinion what would it cost to acquire him?
Was on the air in KC a few weeks ago answering this and it reminded me of J Montana when he became a Chief. That cost a 2nd and a 5th I think. Seems about right to me.
Can you see the 49ers drafting 2 WRs this year
Yes, and I would have no problems with that at all! I don't trust Ginn as a WR at all, so getting a speed guy is the top priority.
Do you think GBay was overrated this year? What is your outlook on them next season?
A little overrated this year, because of the D. Well actually, they were pretty much just a one dimensional team-but it is a GREAT dimension! Losing Jenkins hurt more than most realize. It would be ideal if they could find a DE like him and a OLB to complement Mathews. A pass rush is needed!
What about Felix Jones to the Broncos? They need another RB to pair with Willis
Again, I would not be in the market for trading Jones right now. But DEN would be a great fit.
Do you think New England overacheived this year?
Somewhat. They are far from a perfect team, but how many teams out there were more deserving? The AFC would have been much stronger if PGH and HOUS were healthy, but that isn't the way the league works. The Pats were quite close to hoisting Lombardi again btw. They are built for the long haul too. Not going away.
Any greater need than OL for the Giants?
No...they need a lot of of help there. Might need two starting OTs.
Trade Mcfadden and franchise Bush or let Bush walk? Also, what FAs do you see the Raiders pursuing? I hope they make a play for Grimes.
But what do you get for McF? Don't want to Sell Low on a RB of his abilities. I think you keep McF, enhance the roles of Jones and Reece, both of whom I like. Then use the Bush $$$ somewhere else. CB would be a great place to start. One more starting OLineman would be great too and move the others around to fit him in.
Because of cap issues, the Saints may have to choose between Colston and Nicks. Who should they keep?
I think Nicks is the far superior player, but can you really have THAT much tied up at the guard position? I bet Nicks leaves and Colston signs a somewhat friendly deal...he has to realize that he has it pretty good!
Stevie Johnson going to be a Bill next year?
Johnson isn't great, but how can BUFF let him leave? Might have to even Franchise the guy and then immediately look to lock him up. I don't like this situation at all for the Bills.
Megatron for Mike Wallace, which team hangs up first? :)
Calvin J is WAY more valuable than Wallace...
How do you see the KC's offense going forward with ANOTHER new OC? I mean, can us Chiefs fans really blame Cassel for his up & down seasons in KC? And their drafts? How does that play out this year?
Well, getting back Moeaki and Charles obviously could help quite a bit. And I like the OC hiring-felt like he got as much as he possibly could from MIA's talent last year. Baldwin could take a big step forward in Year 2. And they should be aggressive to upgrade the OL. So right now, I think the O is promising. But I can't say that I have a ton of faith in Cassel in the big picture.
Pats franchising Welker makes too much sense not to happen right?
Has to happen
What are some realistic expectations from the Rams next year with a new coaching staff, even though it is a pretty nice staff that was put together?
I had rather high expectations for STL this past season-esp Bradford. I still don't have worries about Bradford overall, but can they keep Lloyd? The OL is a mess. The D is short on playmakers and could use some help at all three levels. Can't say I have high expectations now.
If Houston stays healthy next year, they look like the team to beat in the AFC. Agree?
They would prob be my choice too
The Patriots need to find a WR through the draft or FA right?
A perimeter speed guy would be a great addition, but that O wasn't too shabby this year! While that type of WR would be great, I would still prefer a strong CB or pass rusher for my money.
Any chance the Eagles don't draft a LB in the first round? If so what?
Seems like the most logical move for sure, but it is also very un-Eagles like. WR if they lose D-Jax makes sense. Reid loves drafting big guys high, so maybe DT.
What's the greatest need for the Jets?
I see several really substantial needs, starting with QB. Then, RT and prob WR on O-maybe an upgrade over Greene at RB. On D, a Safety is a huge need. Another pass rusher would sure be nice.
Did Mario Manningham earn himself a huge contract and a ticket out of NY with that one catch?
We have seem teams historically overpay guys that blow up in the Super Bowl, but I actually think Manningham was underrated heading into that game. So that might balance out. He is a good #2 WR for just about any team in my eyes.
Will Vernon Davis ever reach elite TE level in SF?
I think he will. Ended this season obviously extremely strong and you heard places that it took him a while to learn the O. So yes, I now have faith.
Where do you think the best fit for Peyton is? I think it's throwing it to #11.
You won't want to hear this, but I still think SEA would be a great fit, but they are not one of the teams mentioned. ZONA works too-no doubt. I think you gotta cut ties with Kolb.
Are Dem. Thomas and Eric Decker a good enough WR tandem? Insert Tebow joke...I think they are, and that Tebow apologists saying they need to upgrade the WR position are crazy...
Health is a big worry for both of those guys though. I would add a 3rd guy, but I do hear where you are coming from.
What about SF for Manning? They could add a few WR in free agency and boom, look out Super Bowl.
Yeah, but I don't hear that they have interest-that it will be Smith's job, end of discussion.
Looks like the Giants need some tight ends as well.
Oh yes...without question
Peyton is a pipe dream for Gang Green. Because of that would you consider Jason Campbell to be an upgrade over Sanchez?
I would prefer Campbell, Orton or Henne over Sanchez
If Cassel is not the answer for KC who is? The team has to be realistic.
I would say that you give Cassel another year, but also would be very tempted to take a QB in the top two rounds. But prob not a team to be super aggressive right now to move up for one of the top dogs in the draft.
Has the world come to an end, since I haven't heard Tebow's name for a few days. It is relieving.
Peyton Manning is the new Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow was the new Brett Favre.
How would you rank Campbell, Henne and Garrard for QB needy teams?
Prob in that order. I like Henne though. What is the status of Garrard health-wise? Could see his career maybe being over.
Todd Haley in Pittsburgh.Thoughts?
Abrasive and Loud-not sure if that aspect is a good fit. But, I give him credit. He knows O. And he fits his scheme around the talent he has. In Zona, they were an elite passing O. In KC, they were an elite running O. That is promising.
Is anyone going to accept a coordinator job in Tampa?
Yeah, what is the story with that?
Giants cutting ties with Jacobs? who would best replacement be?
Ware might be serviceable enough, although I don't trust Bradshaw to be durable. Scott also has some promise. But I think would wait on that. Go with who you have and there is always a quality free agent RB out there right before the season or even late in the draft. Grab a value guy-and improve the OL.
Mike Wallace, CJ and Usain Bolt..who wins a foot race?
Bolt and it isn't even close. But...if you put a football in their hands, pads on, have 11 angry fast large men chasing them and make them not run in a direct straight line, I think I go with Wallace.
Why did you leave the Browns? Was it Butch Davis?
No, Butch hired me. Then we didn't win games that year and all of us were pretty much let go. I was there for about one calendar year.
Any beef with the HOF selections...I wish Charles Haley and Andre Reed got in...
No beef. I want to see Parcells, CC and Haley in-and I might have put all of those guys in before C Martin. But no beef.
Who do the Bengals get as a #2 WR and starting RB? I'm hoping for Trent Richardson.
With all their picks, I could see Cincy being players for Richardson if he slips a little. I could also see DeCastro, Fitzpatrick or Jenkins as their first overall pick. Is #2 WR a huge need? I know Simpson prob isn't back but Gresham is an up and comer. It would be nice to add a stable vet opposite Green, but I have higher priorities in Cincy like OG and CB.
Does Cedric Benson end up anywhere? Baltimore, maybe, now that Williams has retired again?
Benson still has something in the tank. DEN? BALT doesn't sound bad. CLEV? Needs a lot of touches and doesn't do much in the passing game, but he is still an effective ball carrier.
Curtis Martin, very good RB, but would you actually say he is a HOFer? I mean I don't ever remember saying Curtis Martin is a top 2-3 RB in football right now.
He may not have been top 2 or 3, but he was never far off either. Great career.
Hi Matt, Do you think Will Beatty is the answer at LT for the Giants? He strikes me as soft and they got better when he was IR'd after he got hurt.
He strikes me as soft too, but I would still take him over Diehl at LT. Just is so much more athletic.
Eli Manning, done enough for the HOF? Really?
I think. Well, if he never took another snap-maybe not. But I see a guy that is getting better and in the prime of his career. Still building a very good resume.
Do you think Greg Little can develop into a top 10 WR in time?
That is saying a lot. He is a long way away. Not saying it won't happen. But CLEV fans should be quite happy if he is just a Top 25 guy by this point next year.
If the Eagles trade Samuel what do they get for him and do they need to use an early pick on a CB?
Bet they get less for Samuel than you would guess-expensive and allows a lot of big plays. Also doesn't like to tackle. If he were to leave, using a high pick on a slot CB could be prudent for sure.
MW, If Eli puts up another 6-7 years like his 2011, he's going to the HOF, whether or not NYG wins another Super Bowl.
Most Def...again, he might even go if he never took another snap. Might
You never answer my questions.
Aaaahhhh...that is so sad
Best FA wr fit for the 9ers? Bowe, V-Jax, S. Johnson, D-Jax? or someone cheaper like manningham, garcon, or j. simpson?
Some great options there. I would be looking for speed first, even though Smith isn't a wonderful deep passer. But they also want a WR that can block. So I would say V Jax is the best option. How about Meachem as a cheap option?
Would it make sense for the Bus to trade for Samuel?
Maybe. I know they have money to spend under the cap. But I also don't know what D scheme they plan on playing and Samuel isn't for everyone. He is an off zone corner.
You consider Deion the best CB ever?
I am from Pittsburgh Scott...give me Blount. But seriously, I VERY much respect Prime. Rod Woodson wasn't too shabby either. I remember Mike Haynes being truly great as well.
Would you agree that Joe Flacco is a top 12-14 QB in the league? He has flaws, but I don't think some people understand that (for whatever reason) his receivers don't get much separation (aside from Torrey Smith downfield)
Well said. I would not put him in the Top 10, but I think that range you mention is about right. Certainly has much room for improvement too.
Top 3 teams in the AFC next year?
I reserve the right to change my mind after I actually see the offseason moves, but I would go with 1. HOUS 2. NENG 3. PGH
Everyone, this was a blast. Take care, follow me on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL) and stop back next week
