Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:03 PM)

Hi all, welcome to our weekly chat. Im in chicago but leave to join the team in San Jose in a little while. Hard to figure whats going on, there are so many defensive problems after another loss last night as they are mired in this losing streak. It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but at least its not late march or something..things can turn on a diime in this league but their problems have existed all season..fire away with questions! lets talk some hakws hockey

Donavan (CL, MI)

Alright, so all the talk is who to start in net. Crawford looks great for a couple minutes one game, then Emery comes through and looks good in another. Obviously this revolving goaltending door is not good coming down the stretch. Perhaps not this year, but is it time for the Hawks to go goalie searching?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:04 PM)

All I can say is its possible. I dont think they are quite ready to give up on Crawford..right or wrong (and they may be right) maybe they feel if they fix their D even a little it will help him..or maybe its a sophmore slump..but at this moment, goaltending is not a strength on this team

Patrick (Palatine)

Jesse, any chance the hawks would send Bickell or Frolik down to Rockford and call up Hayes? Niether is playing well, maybe it would send a message.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:06 PM)

Eh. Its a nice thought of course but contracts play a part...I cant see them sending another 2.3 mil down to play in the minors...bickell would prob be greabbed in waivers as he makes minimial money but I guess no one cares if he does...in theory yes but I dont think hayes for bickell makes the biggest of differneces but couldnt hurt...so people know, hayes and the other rookies dont have to clear waivers...bickell, froli, etc. do

Jacob (Algonquin)

JR..Q is a good coach but the fact is that he lost this team. Q seems stubborn about his strategy despite the fact it isn't working any more. Chances that he is replaced soon...? Sometimes change is needed to spark a team..

Jesse Rogers
  (1:08 PM)

I dont see it soon but if this thing blows up then all bets are off come the offseason..I would like to know he is stressing their system the way he did in their championship year...not sure..or maybe he knows he has a veteran playoff team and is waiting to push the buttons...hard to imagine not pushing them now but you never know..he is good at working towards the playoffs and not hitting the panic button but this is getting a little nuts on defense...he's not in trouble..yet

Nate (Chicago)

Jesse, you prodded us to not worry about this team. Is it time to worry? They're becoming harder and harder to watch.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:10 PM)

Well Ive often said lets not panic about games in nov/dec/jan etc. but since nothing is changing in terms of defense or goaltending then yes we are getting to that point...its hard to imagine playing one way for 82 games and then completely changing for next 20-28 or whatever..but we do see strange turnarounds once april comes..still, hard to break bad habits

Pat (Winfield)

I don't want to contribute to the rumor mongering, but after the start of the road trip I'd like to see the Hawks do anything they can to snap this streak. Is it reasonable to believe that anybody they can bring in help change the things causing the slump?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

I think a trade or something can shake things up short term but to win a cup it has to come from within..there isnt a trade out there short of a major, major blockbuster that can fix everything..top players and their goaltenders have to do it. let alone the role players..but adding or subtracting can be a good wakeup sometimes..

Jen (Rockford)

What's the dynamic like in the room between players that are competing for playing time? Do guys like Bickell and Frolik ever get bitter towards guys like Shaw that are playing instead of them? Or do they realize that it's their own fault that coach has them as healthy scratches?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:13 PM)

Nah, they dont really take it out on the other player. They know everyone just wants to play. Now maybe they get bitter with the coach. That happens everywhere. I bad dude might get on the player but that's stupid. Bickell doesnt seem to be mad at Shaw or anything. He knows he's just playing hockey like everyone else.

tom (oak lawn)

Nice to see Kane finally show up last night...proof his effort has been lacking this year. Does Q or any other coach call Kane out on his effort behind the scenes? I think a benching when the effort is lacking is in order...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:14 PM)

I dont think they do too often..they point out mistakes of course but for the most part they view him as an elite ofensive player and let him do his thing..even in a bit of a down year he's still their best passer and playmaker so I dont think they mess with him too much from what I understand

Bobby B (Newport Beach, CA)

Hey Jesse! I think the Hawks should go get Nabokov from the NYI and drop Emery. Whats would it take to get him and do think hes on the Hawks radar?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Nah. He hasnt proven much of anything in his playoff career. Im not a fan. Just a lateral move in my opinion.. of course I could be wrong

Grant (Chicago)

Seriously, what does Lepisto have to do to get in the lineup? He can't be any worse than what we're already putting out there night after night...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Id be surprised if he wasnt in there this weekend..especially with montador hurting...deserves another chance at this point

Mateo (Cubs)

I'd be lying to say I was not concerned @ this slump, BUT people need to stop freaking out. Like you've been saying all year, the Hawks should be judged in the playoffs. Better to go through this funk and deal with it now, plus they are in a BRUTAL stretch Jesse, calm the storm...!

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

Sort of. But man, its hard to be this bad on defense and win a cup. history says it doesnt happen often. Im willing to do it for one yr here cause I do know how things change in the playoffs. Dave Bolland is a great example..he is just ok all season and then boom he's as valuable as they come..but if they flame out and its cause of what we've seen all year then the gloves come off..plus, there is no way they can afford a slide like this..you want to have some semblence of getting home ice and you certainly dont want to have to fight just to make it in...so this isnt "just wait till playoffs." can do that when youre sailing along at top and have a slump..not there anymore

Andy (Rock Island, IL)

JR-I was wondering if there's something amiss with Keith? I personally know when one's on a skid like the Hawks, it seems every bad bounce goes against your team, however, those bounces seem to be making Keith look completely uncoordinated. His positioning seems to be decent. He's usually the guy with the active stick and picking pucks out of mid-air. Thanks!

Jesse Rogers
  (1:20 PM)

yeah, its hard to fig out. I just said on the radio maybe he's lost a step from all the minutes over hte years..dont always see that jump...but mentally he seems to be fighting it yet again..his mistakes are more glaring it seems but seabrook was really bad last night as well..i dont know the answer..i will tell you around the league those guys still get a ton of respect from hockey poeple..

Janice (Naperville)

Jesse, LOVE your chats!! You do a superb job keeping things on an even keel. Just a suggestion for today's chat....PLEASE do NOT do the Niemi lovefest today....I don't think it will go over well. ;) Good luck! This chat should be fun.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:21 PM)

Ok, but when I see him tonight or tomorrow and write about him there might be some love. sorry, goalie is as important a position as they come and whether its in hindsight or not, they had a guy who proved something few have proved..certainly in a hawks uniform and let him got FOR NOTHING...darn, I said, ok. sorry

Chris (Oswego)

In your opinion, is Campbell being gone why the defense has gotten so bad?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:22 PM)

It cantr be one guy. Cant be. But yeah, his puck posession style helped the team no doubt..they knew they would lose something there..even sharp said it at hawks convention.."we lose something there but we're better in other areas." they're not.

Ricky (the hospital)

Let's be honest...this team is not going to make the playoffs is it? Terrible goaltending, defense, and no scoring depth...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:24 PM)

Cant say that, cant say that, cant say that..remember the competiiton out there..no way they are less talented than other teams not that that's the only thing..and when they get home for march etc. they'll win. this is just the darkest moments..they will come out of it of course but what will they look like? i dont know. But no way you can say that..still have a 7 point lead and this streak has to end soon..i think

Wyatt (Ft Wayne)

Jesse, we have some world class, elite offensive talent and I've seen better high school power plays. Our PP is abyssmal. If we're lucky enough to get possession in the offensive zone, they just try to run the same backdoor play every time. Why can't the coaches fix this?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:25 PM)

I dont know. The only answer Ive had is has become predictable and the blueline on the pp is pretty bad. Again, why Hossa isnt on the point is beyond me...not for one game or one pp but for a few weeks...his shots get through..and he knows what to do with the puck..seems like few do

Al (Northbrook)

There was about an 8-10 game stretch when Toews-Kane-Sharp played together and they were almost unstoppable. Their line had multiple points every game. One of them got hurt and the Q never put the line back together. With all of his other juggling, why doesn't he go back to that?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:27 PM)

Dont think they;ve done that this season..Q has kept 2 of the big 4 together on sep lines..putting those 3 together leaves Hossa with no one special..its 6, half a dozen of the other...plus, this is still about defense..

brian (chicago)

there all kinds of things to talk about as causes for this skid. i'm not that worried about this skid though. i think its a character builder, and a losing skid like this getting close to the end of the season could be a real motivation builder heading into playoffs. look what a losing skid did for NY giants.but re: goaltending, last night, emery played well but he didn't play well enough to make himself a clear favorite over crawford. the third and fourth avs goals were savable. and perhaps more importantly, the rest of the hawks didn't seem to play any differently with emery in net. i don't think a switch at goalie is a real fix for the hawks problems right now. do you agree?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

Maybe not. unless the goalie isnt on the team right now but I dont see them trading for one. I agree with you except how long can you play bad defense and then change in the playoffs? If it happens then I will never take another reg season seriously again as long as they get in..fans can hold out hope for that but its hard to see that scenario right now playing out

Sean (Chicago)

Someone in in the locker room needs to start holding people accontable....right now that doesn't seem to be the case. Who do you think is the best person to do it?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:30 PM)

In this case i think it HAS to be Q...since there are so many issues here, its hard for D to point to O or O to point to D...etc. they all can point to goaltending i guess...but Q is a defensive minded coach who's system recently won a championship..its on him

Tim (Crystal Lake)

Jesse, if this team underachieves again and misses the playoffs or exits early, how do you fix it? Coaching change? Remove a few pieces from "the core" that were supposed to be so great? It will be hard to get excited about next season if all we do is change a few 3rd and 4th liners out

Jesse Rogers
  (1:31 PM)

If they miss or flame out in 1st round then you have to seriously consider a whole philosphy change starting with the core...thats where a Kane or sharp for a no.1 d-man or maybe even goalie becomes a possibility...some coach will take the fall but prob not Q..but you are right, a drastic change has to be considered big time.

Brandon (Syracuse, NY)

Jesse, I know this team has been struggling lately but we still have the 9th most points in the league! Take 3 out the next 5 and all will be well in Chicago, agree/disagree?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

Yes, in theory could be ok. My problem is the WAY they are losing games..ive written and said it. That style is ripe for an upset in the playoffs cause they CANT WIN A LOW SCORING GAME. its crazy

Mike Kamrad (Mesa, AZ)

Can we get Help for Keith, and Seabrook ???

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

I dont think they can now. In the offseason, maybe

Gibbs (Chicago, IL)

Why does Chicago keep getting overlooked when it comes to the All-Star game and Draft? It is hard to believe the UC hasn't held a NBA or NHL all-star game since it was built almost 20 years ago

Jesse Rogers
  (1:34 PM)

I dont know but im sure the fact that this market is doing fine has something to do with it. all things equal they will go to a market that "needs" it. But Chi is in line and will get soon. I see a draft for sure

Greg (Oak Lawn)

D you think there is a direct correlation with the defensive woes going back to John Torchetti leaving and Mike Kitchen joining the staff?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:35 PM)

Thats a really hard question for me to answer..we are not allowed to interview asst coaches and players dont have much opinion on them..i watch practice and thats hard to tell as well..if its true it coms in the smallest of forms..talks with players, etc that inspire and teach them and I just dont know...

Brian (Chicago)

Jesse,Thanks for your blunt article today concerning last night's game and the defense that was non-existent. There are some NHL fans and even Hawk fans that think Keith and Seabrook are overrated and were finally seeing evidence of that not only last night but this entire season?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:36 PM)

I think so but only in the sense that maybe neither are No .1 's. They would be missed big time if just taken out of lineup without suitable replacement..they;re not that bad..but Ill tell you among hockey people they still get a lot of respect.

Marco (AZ)

I think it has become apparent that this team is defiantly not built for a Cup run this year and the Hawks are doing nothing about that. Do you think that maybe they're waiting for this off-season to make some major splashes with acquiring some big names?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

No i dont think they are waiting and i dont think they think all is lost...they are right about the ups and downs even for good teams but we dont know if thats what this is...again, same problems all year worry me despite a decent record still

Austin (GA)

Obviously defense is a problem for the hawks right now. All the reports are saying there aren't many sellers out there right now but that can change as we move closer to the deadline. Who do you see as a potential fit for chicago?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:39 PM)

There's a few out there...mtl, gill and campoli...I dont know whats up with suter on nash but I would guess they would trade outside the division..my guess is they very best they get is a quasi 4 or 5...nice but not enough to fix everything

Jacob (Downtown)

Any chance the Hawks move a top 6 forward or top 4 dman before the trade deadline? Would that constitute as a wakeup call?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

Im going to say no. Maybe offseason

Marc lang (wheeling)

Which defensemen do you think would help the blawhawks the most and is he able to be traded for?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

Def Suter..and techinically he might be avail but nash would be nuts to trade him...you lsoe him you lose him but you have a chance at a run...

Nick (Aurora)

Just curious about the attitude and atmosphere in the room right now. Are guys down on themselves and each other. Is there a lot of anger and fire about the poor fundamental play. Or are guys just quiet and, for lack of a better word, "moping" ?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:41 PM)

Probably the latter..i wasnt there last night but Ive been to everything else lately..and its more quiet than mad I think..I think they believe this is just a funk...or maybe they're hopeful it is.

Adam (Chicago)

Should this slump really come as a surprise? The Hawks were winning earlier despite themselves because 19 and 10 were on pace for 50 goals each. They came back to Earth and you-know-what hit the fan.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:42 PM)

Youre probably right, combined with avg play on the road but mostly the fact that thier D has been bad all season..and we know scoring is streaky and unpredictable..defense doesnt have to be

Steve (chicago)

What happened to Nick Leddy? Confidence? or did he play above his level and is now falling back to earth?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

Just young and having growing pains..I dont think Shaw has been too great lately..it takes a VERY special player at that age to keep it going

Jacob (Downtown)

JR, is it safe to say the Morrison (while worth the little risk) deal did not work out and the Hawks are again in search for a #2 center and D-man?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

In a word: yes

Anthony (Schaumburg)

Possible that the Hawks could come home with 1 of a possible 18 points on this trip? If so, then what? It doesn't get easier on this trip.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

Cmon, lets not get carried away. They do lay columbus and while it may seem like they cant win a game, i think they can. No, really, they can. :)

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

play columbus!!

Nate (Chicago)

Some people are saying that this team is causing turnovers and bad play due to being afraid of taking hits. What are your thoughts on that?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:45 PM)

I say they are "afraid" to block shots more than anything. Toews afraid of a hit? no way. Kane even takes it. I dont buy it. Forwards blocking shots is a whole other story

Steve (Chicago)

The Ghost of Niemi past - Bowman has to personaly take responsibility for the the worst decision he has made. Thoughts Jesse?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:46 PM)

Do we have a couple hours? In another word: yes.

Rob (Itasca)

Jesse, it's a pipe dream here, but I've seen enough of Kane. Maybe what this team needs is a blockbuster shakeup. This is not a kneejerk reaction, but Kaner has been a now show for 2 years now....ok he played well in Oct/Nov but has benn an no show since. Why not package Kane...or would McD never allow a key piece of the marketing machine to be moved?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:47 PM)

Again, maybe in the offseason but not so much cause Kane is this or that but because he might get you better on defense or goaltending...their pipeline remains on offense in my opinon..need a real No .1 d-man if you can get

Jay (Chicago)

I think the Hawks are an average team with hella marketing behind them. They're not deep, they're a little soft and they're more than a little into themselves. Agree or too harsh?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:48 PM)

Too harsh...their formula is like the wings..and thats worked pretty well..but you are right bout the marketing

Erik (SF, CA)

I feel like I'm reading a chat from last season. Seems like a lot of the same issues are presenting themself again

Jesse Rogers
  (1:49 PM)

I dont know. I dont remember the defense being this bad (maybe keith some) and def not the tending once craw took over..feels diff to me..the goal totals alone are different, right?

Pat (itasca)

I know its risky to make big changes, but aren't we at the point where some severe shakeups need to occur? The coaching staff obviously are not getting through to this team and the pp and defense should just not be this bad for such an extended period.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:50 PM)

Actually, for them if the drop down to 8 or 9 then i think they go nuts but right now, they'll just say its a slump and we want to get in..so it is a bt risky to lose your mind now

Joe Koperski (Lisle)

Many people are all over Keith, but once again yesterday Seabrook was out of position on 2 of the goals. When is some heat going to go on Seabrook?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:51 PM)

I agree. I have said it before..hockey is about support...Keith is on the island and needs support and 7 isnt always there..awful play on 3rd goal..and dont get me started on campoli turnover in game 7. where was seabs? not anywhere near where he needed to be.

Steve (Effingham)

Hey Jesse. Great work covering the Hawks as usual. With the current funk they're in, should we hope they stay where they are currently at as in finishing the regular season as the 6 or 7 seed? This avoids a first round matchup with the Central Division which would bode well for the Hawks. Don't you think?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

It can turn on a dime. We know that. This sport is so streaky, even for the good teams. I guess I would write off the division or conference. (I know, way to go out on a limb) but the competition in the west isnt THAT good so its still possible to recover..

Drew (Georgia)

Jesse- is the lack of physicality a concern in your opinion? It doesn't even seem like anyone is pissed off on the ice about losing (outside of Toews).

Jesse Rogers
  (1:54 PM)

Eh. That gets overblown. Would it be nice if Mayers pummeled someone? Sure. But overall, I dont care that they get outhit...they were getting outhit and winning plenty of games...now if they NEED to be more physical to win, maybe thats something to examine..hit to get the puck or hit to send a message it important but actually HAVING the puck is most important. hmm, not sure if that made sense but Ill go with it!

Steve (Frankfort)

Jesse, with Carolina at the bottom of the east do you think a trade for Gleason is in the works at all?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:55 PM)

Not since he signed a 4 year contract extensiuon about a week ago

Roger_Maye (Aurora)

why do you believe they lose to teams like the Oilers yet play well against the Cansucks?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:55 PM)

Bunch of reasons. def focus but matchup is actually better against van..and they know each other so well, hard for one team to get a big edge

Adam (NYC)

I know you say Hawks always have way fewer hits than opponents because they're a puck possession team. But at some point, you have to bring some physicality. '10 team had Ladd, Buff, Eager, Burish that would bring it. You think they need some more toughness and need to play bigger?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:58 PM)

The short answer is yes. But more than that, those guys were simply talented players that could do many things...play physical, skate, shoot, defense...all that..they lost talent more than anything...think of that talent and then think of mayers, brunette, odonnell, frolik, etc.

Tony (Minooka)

Jesse, how much of this is actually on Bowman? He won it all with Tallon's boys, and none of his guys have done anything since he took over. When do the Hawks seriously consider a change?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

Its on him, in part. I say the main guys get another season/offseason.

Mike (Carol Stream)

back to the PP - other teams seem to set up camp in front of our GT, while we are rarely in front of theirs. Is that a coaching philosophy or just players unwilling to go to a spot that requires being physical?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:00 PM)

I see players there..Toews and Shaw and brunettee go there...I dont see enough pucks getting there though..kane needs to shoot more for sure..same with d-men..if they can find that lane

Steve (Downers Grove)

Based on Toews last couple of games at the faceoff dot, is it safe to guess that his wrist is still bothering him? Otherwise, how else do you explain his drop in winning faceoffs?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:00 PM)

yes, I would say it is. Ive seen him doing the fist thing in the locker room..ya know, opening and closing it.so yes, think its had an affect

Jeff N (Chicago)

Jesse,Well what do you know... Kane decided to play hard last night. Wow! Who knew this slacker had the pride to do such a thing. I'm tired of his act, Jesse. Either play hard, or get off the ice. Your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

A few of these type thoughts in here today..I dont know, I kind of think right now h'es almost the least of their problems..if he slacks but sets up his teammates for winners and the like I can live with that I guess...still the best passer..i dont like the slacking but hes not the reason theyve given up so much on D..not that he helps but hes paid to produce on offense and thats about it..but I unsertand your frustration

Patrick (Valparaiso)

Stan Bowman has failed this team, starting with letting Niemi go. Why is everyone pointing the finger at Q? Frolik, Olesz, Carcillo, Brunette, Montador, O'Donnell, etc.......NOT GOOD!

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Hard to argue..a lot of those decisions involve a lot of people but its his name next to general manager

Joe Koperski (Lisle)

Tweets from the other night had 22 gm's and scouts at the Leaf's, Oil game. Were the Hawks scouts there and who can be had from either team

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

I heard maybe Colby Armstrong..maybe Edm d-men..dont think toronto will trade from their D-core..and Im not sure edm d-men are right fit but you never know..tons of scouts at every game nowadays

John Schelling (Thunder Bay Ontario)

Hi Jesse! Just a little curious on your hockey past & roots? What was the highest level that you have played?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

I played some college club hockey at the great Northen Illinois University..thats the highest level..though I think I could take Scott in a foot race even now! lol

Adam (Chicago, IL)

I'm generally a fan of the Coach Q musical chairs of lines, but I'm wondering if it's gotten to a point of too much tinkering. Hossa's been with who knows how many centers the past few games. Would it be wise to settle in to try to get some chemistry developed? I hate to use the sisters as an example, but they constantly play together, and it's all too easy to predict Pat Foley's call: "Henrik with the puck... where's Daniel?" Is a bit consistency something that will help our players get out of this funk?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

I go back and forth on this but mainly agree with you. and good point about Hossa. he hates all the switching..but maybe you missed it even the sedins were broken up the other night..plus they are twins having played their whole lives together so more reasons to keep them together...Q isnt first coach to change them up..if he didnt he wouldnt know which ones he likes come playoffs..I think of some of the third lines over last few years and sometimes the strangest combos work but I dont disagree with your premise..if they had a 2nd line center you would see more consistency for sure

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

Bryan (Lake Forest)

Jesse - isn't this streak similar to what Detroit went through earlier this year? Think they lost 6 in a row, including a loss to Columbus, then they turned it around and now leads the league.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

yeah, after like winning their first 5..I think they lost 6 but I think the concern is HOW the hawks are losing more than anything...also now that we are much later in the season seems harder to climb back up..but there is time

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Thats it for today.. good questions. I hope I had good answers. Im headed out to SJ in a bit so will have new stuff from hawks in blog tonight, tomorrow, etc. have a new one going up soon. Follow me on twitter @espnchihawks for all the latest..maybe hear some trade stuff soon though its been quiet..check out the blog daily..you can email me at jrogers@espnchicago.com maybe better days ahead for hawks fans. we'll see. season kind of, sort of , hanging in balance but not quite yet...plenty of time though it looks bleak right now. thanks again
