Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:01 PM)

Greetings. Thanks for stopping by. We have a ton of questions already. We can talk Jets or Super Bowl. Whatever you want. Let's get started.

Rich (New Jersey)

How does the future look for LaDainian Tomlison and Plaxico Burress? And what will Mark Sanchez status be if the Jets don't make the playoffs in 2012?

Rich Cimini
  (1:02 PM)

LT's future might be in TV. I think he'll retire and he won't be back with the Jets. Burress is a FA and won't be back. The Sanchez question is impossible to answer at this point.

Bill H (NYC)

Hi Rich... big fan, thanks for taking my question. Do you really think the Jets will take another shot at RT this year with Hunter? Seems like quite a risk for a team looking to re-establish the run and max protect Sanchez. If there is any doubt, the Jets should look back to when they tried to replace Kendall with Adrian Clarke and see how that season went. Please tell me they have sometihng better!

Rich Cimini
  (1:05 PM)

Thanks, Bill. I'm not sure what their strategy is with Hunter. I definitely think they'll try to address RT, either in FA or draft. I could see them making a run at Miami's Vernon Carey (a Sparano guy) and putting him in a competition with Hunter. I'm guessing Hunter has an off-set in his contract, meaning if he's cut and signs elsewhere, the Jets would be responsible for the difference. That would lower the cost.

Mike (pearl river)

Rich great job have been following you since your newsday days. Trent Richardson would look good in green and white any thoughts? anyway JCo comes back?

Rich Cimini
  (1:07 PM)

Richardson would be perfect for the Jets. They need a dynamic back; that would help the offense tremendously. Trouble is, I don't see him lasting until 16. If he drops out of the top 10, I'd think hard about trading up for him. J-Co would help the locker room, for sure, but they have 3 and 4 WRs in Kerley and Turner. They need a 2, and I don't think J-Co is a 2.

Rich (Tarzana)

Why would the Jets pick up Santonio's 15 mil option? With such a deep WR FA class, it would seem they would be better suited splitting that $ on two of the marquee names out there

Rich Cimini
  (1:08 PM)

The Jets boxed themselves into a corner because of the contract. If they cut him, they would've had to eat $7.75 mil (ouch) and take a $12 mil cap hit (double ouch).

Gavin (NY)

Rich, don't you think the Jets are way too concerned about chasing the big name instead of building the team the right way via the draft. I really don't think it is a good idea to invest big money and chase after Peyton Manning. It will just make their cap situation worse and there are to many risks. If the Jets want to be the splashy team and the big draw in town, just win a superbowl.

Rich Cimini
  (1:10 PM)

You sound like a Giants fan, Gavin. That's the Giants' philosophy.

Bill (NY)

I'm just so glad Curtis Martin made the Hall of Fame this year. What a humble man and class act. I was just wondering if you see any current Jets if they keep up their level of play possibly making the hall down the line. My guesses would be Revis and Mangold. Also do you think Klecko could get in via Veterans Committee ballot.

Rich Cimini
  (1:12 PM)

I definitely think Klecko deserves strong consideration. The entire HOF voting process is a joke, but don't get me started. Revis and Mangold have a shot; Revis has had 4 top years -- he needs a few more. Ditto, Mangold. An ex-Jet, Alan Faneca, has a very good chance in 4 years. Then, of course, there's Mr. Favre in 4 years...if he doesn't come back.

Luke (NY)

Rich, since the Jets are keeping Hunter do you see them upgrading the left guard spot. Slauson at best is a back up and would provide some depth. Also Brandon Moore on the right side is getting up there in age. Carl Nicks and Ben Grubbs are both free agents. I think they need to solidify the line somehow.

Rich Cimini
  (1:13 PM)

I just don't see how the Jets can go out and spend major bucks on a guard; it's not smart.

Mason (NY)

Rich, is this finally the year the Jets address the pass rush. The main reason the Giants beat the Patriots twice in the Superbowl aside from Eli Manning has been that ferocious pass rush. Mike T has got to find away to sign a player like Mario Williams and draft Melvin Igram. Igram is a guy to me that is very versatile and would be perfect in Rex's scheme. I really think that Tannenbaum has to hit a home run in this draft to keep his job. Do you agree?

Rich Cimini
  (1:14 PM)

You're right, they've ignored the pass rush for too long. You can't rely on the Jamaal Westermans and Aaron Maybins of the world. Rex has to find a new Terrell Suggs.

John (NY)

Rich, I just read somewhere that Sanchez's cap value for 2012 is 14.2 million. Is that true? If so is there anyway to restructure and lower the cap number this year without extending his contract? I highly doubt he will be willing to do that though.

Rich Cimini
  (1:18 PM)

Sanchez's cap charge is $14,253,125, to be exact. You're right, it's a big hit. Maybe they'll try to use the possiblity of Peyton as leverage to get him to take a pay cut, but that would be foolish. Sanchez has enough going on, and the last thing you want to do is mess with his head by slashing his salary.

Jeremy (NY)

Out of these players who do you think will be back next year: Bryan Thomas, Pace, Scott, Leonhard, and Maybin. I think Thomas and Leonhard could be brought back relatively cheap due to injury. Pace and Scott's contracts are guaranteed and Maybin shouldn't be too expensive. What do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

Maybin is a RFA, so he's definitely back. Don't see Thomas back, maybe Leonhard at the vets' minimum. Pace or Scott goes, can't keep both. Pace is a better player and deserves to stay, but Scott has $4.2M guaranteed. I'd eat the money and dump him.

Joe (New Jersey)

In the offseason there is normally a lot of speculation about how teams will fill holes with Free agents and Draft picks. This year our team had some major weaknesses exposed. What positions do you think are the Jets biggest needs and what position do you envision us using our first round pick on?

Rich Cimini
  (1:22 PM)

I think their biggest needs are edge rusher, S, WR, RT, NT (if they lose Pouha) and RB.

Jon (New Jersey)

Last year was the Namndi sweepstakes, will this year become the Laron Landry sweepstakes, or do you think the Jets will avoid high profile names and start looking for role players?

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

I don't think Landry is good enough to have a "sweepstakes." The Jets will always look for big names.

Dec (Ireland)

Hey Rich. Lots of negative reaction to Wayne Hunter being kept on the roster but with team-chemistry being the teams No1 off-season priority and with the events of the Dolphins game still fresh in mind what sort of message would the Jets have been sending by keeping Holmes and releasing Hunter?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

That's a great point, Dec. I guess Hunter is a $2.45 M insurance policy. I can't imagine them making him their RT, but they figure he's a good guy to have around in a backup role. Expensive backup.

Has there been any hints about what veteran QB may be brought in to "push" Sanchez?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

Wouldn't be shocked if they pursue Chad Henne-- if his shoulder (non-throwing) is healed.

Marco (Rochester, NY)

Rich -Nice work this season!! Do you have any updates regarding the QB coach / Passing Game Coordinator? I cannot see how the team can bring back Cavanaugh, even though I know he's Ryan's guy. How about Jim Zorn or Hue Jackson? They would be better fits in my opinion. THANKS

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

This is still a fluid situation. The team has been mum on staff hires recently. Cavanaugh is under contract and I'm guessing they don't want to eat that money. They wanted Daboll, but couldn't get him. Ryan has showed interest in zorn in the past and he definitely knows Jackson. I have nothing against Cavanaugh, but I think the new OC should have the ability to hire his own guy.

Matt (Washington, D.C.)

Hey Rich,I remember last time the Giants won the Super Bowl Woody Johnson got the Jets back on the front page by grabbing Favre. What are the odds he'll try and do the same with Manning?

Rich Cimini
  (1:29 PM)

I think the Jets will dip their toe in the water, but lemme tell you this right now: There's no way Manning is coming to the Jets.

Jim (Columbus)

A stud WR or stud rush OLB in the first, what do you see?

Rich Cimini
  (1:30 PM)

Not sure if there's a WR who fits at 16. I don't know enough about the Notre Dame kid. I'd go for the OLB.

Sal (San Diego)

Hi Rich...that Hunter deal tells me two things: a) The Jets are not planning to go OL in the first round and B) Given his stature with his teammates, the Jets might finally be waking up to the need for team leaders and you think this is a direct result of Sparano already having a hand print on the offensive decision making?

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

Hunter is definitely a good chemistry guy, well-respected by teammates, even more so for standing up to Holmes. But he's limited as a full-time OLM. I don't think keeping Hunter precludes them from taking an OLM in Round 1. Hunter could be a hold-the-fort guy until the kid (whoever he is) is ready.

Bill (Scranton, PA)

Hey Rich,With the renewed emphasis on the runnig game will they take a serious look at drafting a runnig back. Also will they be targeting any of the big name wide recievers to complement Holmes?

Rich Cimini
  (1:34 PM)

They'd better be looking at a RB. LT is a goner and McKnight isn't ready for a prime-time role. They need a back to complement Greene.

Gary (York, Pa)

According to Mort, Sparano was going to be able to hire 3 coaches. It appears he has hired to two. O-Line and his son. Will he be able to hire a QB coach/passing game coordinator.

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

Great question; that's what we're waiting to find out. They flirted with Haley, tried to get permission to interview Daboll (and were denied) and even talked to Karl Dorrell. I suppose Zorn and Hue Jackson are possibilities, and so is Cavanaugh. The Jets have been curiously quiet on this one.

Stephen (Turkey)

Hi Rich,I know it may not sound likely but what would you think of trying to package a deal around Dustin Keller to move up in the draft to get RGIII. I heard the Vikings might shop there pick and you'd think they'd be in the market for a TE to help there young QB Ponder. I love DK but a QB with his talent exceeds anything DK can offer. Again I highly doubt it'll happen but it's an intriguing thought right?

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

The Jets would have to offer a hell of a lot more than Keller to go from 16 to the 2-to-4 range, which is where RG3 will go.

Akiva Goldenberg (New York)

I was curious to know who made the decision to keep Brian Schottenheimer after the coaching change (from Eric Mangini to Rex Ryan)?

Rich Cimini
  (1:38 PM)

Ultimately, Ryan had to agree to it, but Tannenbaum strongly recommended him -- strongly.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Hi Rich. How do you suspect the Jets will go about replacing Plaxico Burress? Jets will surely miss plax in the redzone. Not so much in between the 20s. Is Braylon Edwards a realistic possibility?

Rich Cimini
  (1:39 PM)

I don't get this fascination with Braylon Edwards. Yeah, he had a good year for the Jets in 2010, but it's not like he's the answer. Like Holmes, he's another high-maintainence player. I can't see them going back to him.

Jeff (San Diego)

Rich - What are the top 3 priorities for the offseason as far as personnel? With the right moves can this team be a legit contender in 2012 or are we looking at a rebuilding project?

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

They're not rebuilding. They were 8-8, not 4-12. There's still enough talent here to win.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

The fact that Wayne Hunter's contract is now guaranteed, that must mean Ducasse is as good as gone. What available free agents could should Jets fans be keeping their eyes on?

Rich Cimini
  (1:41 PM)

Ducasse isn't going anywhere. He still hasn't had a full offseason, and they won't pull the plug until he gets that chance.

Gregory (New Jersey)

I think plaxico should not be back with the jets next season. what do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (1:41 PM)

Don't worry, he's not coming back.

Oz (CT)

There's a rumor floating around that Keller's being shopped, have you heard anything ? I think an story floated it.

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

I haven't heard that. I think it would be lunacy to trade your best offensive weapon.

Jerod (Ohio)

Hi Rich: fantastic work as always. You help us out-of-town fans feel like we're right in the middle of everything, which we're all thankful for. Has any of the criticism regarding Sanchez's development (or lack thereof) been aimed at Cavanaugh? It sounds like Rex wants Matt to stay, but wouldn't a fresh perspective for Mark help with the new offensive system about to be put in place?

Rich Cimini
  (1:45 PM)

Thanks, Jerod, appreciate the kind words. I agree with you. As I said, I have nothing against Cavanaugh, but they're installing a new offense and the man doing it -- Sparano -- has no background as a QB tutor. Sanchez regressed last season, so I'm not sure if I see the wisdom in retaining Cavanaugh. Stay tuned on this one.

Gregory (New Jersey)

was schottenheimer the real problem last season on why the jets struggled on offense or was it santonio holmes fault?

Rich Cimini
  (1:45 PM)

I think it was the media. Blame us.

Malthe Carlsen (Copenhagen, Denmark)

As i'm sure we all know, Wayne Hunter's salary for 2012 is now guaranteed. Do you think that the FO will still make a move for a FA RT before the draft?

Rich Cimini
  (1:46 PM)

Yes, I could see that happen. Sparano likes his RG from Miami, Vernon Carey, who can play RT.

kman (NYC)

Please explain, or try to, why the Jets traded Dwight Lowery? Were they totally blind to the talent void at safety?

Rich Cimini
  (1:47 PM)

Great question, KMan. I didn't love that trade when it happened. Lowery had a solid year for Jax and now he's a free agent.

Greg (NewJersey)

will the jets practice mainly in florham park or in cortland next training camp

Rich Cimini
  (1:48 PM)

They're Cortland-bound.

John (Hillsdale NJ)

I wish he would but I can't see Rex taking a page from Coughlin's book and becoming more of a disciplinarian with his team - and with the group he's assembled that's what he needs to become. We saw this year what happens when a players coach doesnt have character guys taking the lead. Who's going to fill that gap in this present locker room? I can't think of one.

Rich Cimini
  (1:49 PM)

A coach can soften up if he starts out as a disciplinarian (i.e. Coughlin), but it's very hard to go the other way, which is what Rex would have to do.

Bryan (Howard Beach)

Rich, is Peyton considering the Jets? Herm Edwards thinks we are nuts for thinking it's a possibility.

Rich Cimini
  (1:51 PM)

Herm is right on this one.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, easy to 2nd quess but Abraham has never been replaced by the Jets and he has missed only 2 games in the past 5 years with Atlanta. I think Mawae was as good a center or better then Mangold is right now. Wonder if they made a mistake?

Rich Cimini
  (1:52 PM)

It wasn't a mistake. They got an All-Pro center out of the deal. Never second guess a trade if you get a good player out of it.

Chris (RU Grease Trucks, New Brunswick)

Hi Rich! Why is everyone so quick to pull the plug on a young QB like Sanchez? Does nobody remember in early 2007 when Giants GM Reese called Eli "skittish" and the fans wanted him run out of town? How did that work out? Furthermore, Sanchez needs weapons around him and a line to protect him. Agreed?

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

Do yourself a favor: Compare Eli's stats in his third season (2006) with sanchez's stats from his just-completed 3rd season. You might be surprised with what you see.

Steiny (NYC)

Rich just wanted to stop by and congratulate you and another great season. (23 years and counting!) Looking forward to all your great work this offseason and beyond. Be well my man!

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

Yeah, 23 years. Where did the time go? Where did Joe Walton go? Kotite? Coslet? ... Ah, memories.

Brian (Staten Island)

What are the odds the Jets make a play for one of the big FA WRs that will be available (Vincent Jackson, DeSean Jackson, etc)?

Rich Cimini
  (1:55 PM)

That's just what the Jets need, another $9 million-a-year diva at WR.

perry (lic)

Hi Rich, Do you have any info on Chad Pennington. Is is done playing. I know he did some broadcasting this year. Would he consider a quarterbacks coach position. Has Jets and Sparano connection

Rich Cimini
  (1:57 PM)

Sounds like Chad is done playing. He did an interview the other day and pretty much said he's retiring. I think he'd be a good QBs coach, but I think he wants some quality of life (he has 3 young boys) and would sooner get into HS coaching than the NFL.

R (in CT)

What are the chances of Pouha coming back? You could argue that he was the defensive MVP this year

Rich Cimini
  (1:58 PM)

Very good. I think the Jets will try hard to keep him.

Pete (Astoria)

What players should benefit the most from a full offseason?

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

Ducasse, Wilkerson, Conner, Kerley, McElroy, Powell, Wilson ... all the 2nd and 3rd yr guys.

Ryan (Florida)

Great work by the way, you don't deserve alot of the flack you get around here.

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

I didn't realize I get flack.

Jon (NYC)

Rich, two thoughts: 880 and FAB Melo!!

Rich Cimini
  (2:00 PM)

go Orange!

Steve (NYC)

What are the chances that the sign Mario Manningham?

Rich Cimini
  (2:00 PM)

Jim (NYC)

Can you please elaborate on why Peyton would not want to play here? We're not that far from an SB.

Rich Cimini
  (2:01 PM)

Bad chemistry. Cold weather. offensive system. Same town as Eli.

Jon (NYC)

If the Jets do not make it to the AFC Championship game this year, any chance Rex and Tanenbaum are goners? As a PSL holder (and your twitter follower!), I'm already sick of their crap.

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

Relax, it was one bad year. Give 'em a chance to rebound.

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Well, I'm out of time. Thanks again for the great questions. Stay tuned to the Jets blog for the latest on the team. Just because football is over doesn't mean we're done. Have a great weekend! Rich
