What's going on guys and gal? Crazy few days in MMA. The Diaz Saga unfolds, fights being made by the parcel, and Ellenberger/Sanchez coming up on Wednesday. Also got UFC 144 in Japan around the corner. Never a dull moment. What's on your minds?
If the UFC matches up Mir and Werdum in a potential number 1 contender match, what do you see as next for Cain Velazquez? I heard a possible May return, but against what opponent in such a top heavy division?
Well, turns out a night of insomnia is all we needed for Lorenzo Fertitta to provide some answers here. Looks like Mir will fight Cain Velasquez, potentially on Memorial Day weekend in Vegas. That would have to be a title eliminator.
Is it possible that we could see Hendo challenge for both the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight belts back-to-back for a second time? If this happened and he were to lose both title matches again, that HAS to damage his legacy, right? It's insane.
It's possible, but not likely. I think right now Hendo is just looking for a chance in either weight class. His preference would be at light heavyweight, but he wouldn't turn down a fight with Anderson Silva. Plus, he's not opposed to cameoing as a heavyweight if need be.
What's the word on Dan Henderson? First he's going to wait for Jones/Evans, but now he's looking for a fight?
Just blogged about this yesterday. Dana White said that Henderson would wait on Jones/Evans, but Henderson said that he only wanted to wait on Jones/Davis. Now he's ready to fight, just wanted a fight that makes sense. I could foresee Quinton Jackson in his future, if Rampage beats Bader.
Is this thing auto-updating?
When is the fight between NBK and GSP supposed to take place, barring setbacks?
It's still up in the air, depending on GSP's health. Right now he is projecting a November return. If Condit waits that long for a fight, that's likely when it'll be...and good chance it's in Toronto.
Whats next for Gray Maynard? I'm guessing Clay Guida, since it would be too long for him to stay out and wait for the winner of either Pettis/Lauzon or Miller/Diaz.
I think Clay will get Maynard next. I spoke to Guida last night and he said he is looking for a May return. That would seem about right for Maynard, too. Makes a lot of sense to book those guys, both coming off impressive fights (even though they both lost).
Any chance Mir catches Cain here, or does Velasquez leave Frankie looking like a Hannibal Lecter victim?
Mir definitely looked good against Big Nog. There's a chance he could catch Velasquez, but I'd pick the other way.
Looks like the UFC dodged a bullet with Diaz. Imagine the impact of him winning against Condit decisively and then getting a No Contest and a Suspension.
Would have been the Gomi episode all over again. Good point.
if Diaz-Condit rematch was bad for the WW division, how is Condit waiting for GSP any better? i think its worse
I fully expect Condit to take a fight before GSP. It's not in his nature to wait around. Look how fast he jumped at the chance to rematch Diaz for no real gain. The question is: Who against...
Absolutely stoked for Diaz-Condit, can Condit handle Diaz' volume? Can Diaz handle Condit's length. Just see this one as an absolute war.
Hmm...that fight happened. And as much as some wanted to play it back, not going to happen in 2012. Diaz will be out at least a year (and maybe forever, though I doubt it).
Any chance Mr. Diaz doesn't get a one-year suspension considering the growing support of marijuana use across the nation? I know I wasn't, uh, he wasn't supposed to smoke it, but it's not like steroids, right? Will he be shown any mercy?
That's what he's facing is a year-long suspension. The first time he tested positive he had a six-month suspension. Second offense will warrant a year. Will he return? Probably. And Dana White says that he'll have a place in the UFC when he does.
Ortiz-Griffin III, really? Would much rather see Forrest fight Bonnar once more before they both retire...
You're not the only one saying this. Forrest/Ortiz III is more of a personal request that fans seem to have very little interest in.
Who would you like to see Condit face then?
I'd personally like to see him face Johny Hendricks. But, if Jake Ellenberger beats Diego Sanchez on Wednesday (and does it as emphatically as he did Shields), I wouldn't be opposed to Ellenberger/Condit II. That first fight was a war.
What is the threshold for Diaz's lack of professionalism? We've seen the UFC cut guys (Parisyan) and give multiple chances (Leben). At what point does the UFC act, if at all?
Is this the legendary RJ? The UFC has been very inconsistent with how they react to fighters who come up positive for banned substances. Thiago Silva wasn't released and sat out a year. Nate Marquardt was banished. Looks like Diaz maybe have sympathizers at the top.
Who do you got between Struve/Pee Wee Herman?
Doesn't Rampage (if he beats Bader) vs Hendo make sense do to the timing of Jones/Evans and Silva/Sonnen
Yes. That fight happens a full two months before Jones/Evans, so that Henderson/Jackson could happen fairly close to that April date. I think Henderson would love to get an extra fight in, avenge his loss to Rampage, and mesh up the schedules.
What changes, if any, would you make to the scoring system?
I really think they should experiment more with the half-point system on lower circuits. It's a large problem. I like that they have monitors now to see angles that they couldn't before. But there is way too much discrepancy between what one judge is seeing versus another.
I think Tito wants to go out vs Forrest. I think Bonnar or Forrest would want the other as his final fight.Since you alluded to it...who's next for Condit while GSP heals? Hendricks?
That would be my guess, or Ellenberger if he beats Sanchez. Heard Condit was on his way to Vegas today to speak with Dana White. Could be news on this forthcoming.
Too deep in the chat to have nobody talk about me. Make it happen, Chucky!
Your name is bound to come up, Sir.
UFC 144 is the best card top to bottom this year, why is it in Japan?
A lot of people think that Edgar/Henderson should have been made for TV. I agree with that. There are plenty of good fights on that card, but it is tiptoeing up on the calendar. Hardly anybody talking about it.
I saw that you said you thought Edgar should fight Aldo next, win or lose at UFC 144. Still think that way?
I still think that if Frankie Edgar were to lose to Ben Henderson, he should drop down to featherweight and take on Jose Aldo. That would make for a superfight of sorts. Should he win, it would be fun to see Aldo jump up to lightweight for a superfight. Will any of that happen? Who knows. Especially now that they have announced Poirier/Korean Zombie for what looks like a title eliminator.
What do you think about judges being in a different room and watching the fights without sound?
Interesting. But in a way it's almost like that already. They are on an island, not hearing Joe Rogan's commentary. Rogan steers a lot of public opinion, whether we like it or not. Judges just watch the fight.
Charles- Lovin' the Friday chat. Keep the torch burning. Were you as surprised as I was with all the venom directed at Condit's performance?
I just hope this is the real JA. I was completely surprised at people coming at Condit for running. His game plan was not to give into Diaz's game plan. Turned out to be smart. And he punished him plenty in the course of five rounds. What's not to like?
So is JDS and Overeem a done deal? When is that fight happening?
It looks like it's a done deal, and will be held Memorial Day weekend in Vegas. Let the countdown begin....love that fight.
Chuck, stepping outside of the Diaz-Condit debate. I think the most impressive fighter outside of the Diaz-Condit in UFC 143 was Stephen Wonderboy Thompson. What are you thoughts about him?
Dude looks good. I am looking forward to seeing more of him down the road. Pocketed some extra cash that night, too.
Stoked for Edgar-Henderson! Do you think Frankie Edgar gets his due as a Champion or a P4P fighter?
As much as he gets his due directly after fighting, for some reason we begin doubting him a week later. Maybe it's his size, or demeanor, or whatever...but he always looks like an underdog going into fights. A lot of people are picking Bendo. Guess Edgar has them right where he wants them.
How do you think the Diaz situation affects Jon Fitch in the WW pecking order? I know he is off a loss, but just wondering
Interesting thought. The Fitch situation is harsh. The guy has been hanging around just below GSP for a couple of years, had his one chance at UFC 87, and has spent the rest of his time trying to get another. Then he loses in 12 seconds to a hard left. He's still a top 5 or 6 welterweight. Would love to see him get a guy in that range to correct the loss.
What's up with the Wednesday fight card next week...blowing my calendar. Guess it doesn't matter, since I don't get Fuel.
Been hearing that a lot. The Wednesday card is a little strange, but I like it. A little break in the action. I work most weekend because there are fights most weekends.
Who do you have in JDS vs The Reem?
Taking JDS. Think they'll stand and bang and one will fall (Overeem).
Thoughts on Aaron Simpson's fight this week?
Tell you what, he looked as good as he ever has at UFC 136 in Houston against Eric Schafer. He comes out in that kind of shape, with that kind of focus, will be a long night for Markes. Also be interested to see how the weight cut from 205 to 185 plays in (if at all) for Markes.
What's going on with Cain Velasquez? Seems to be really slow finding his next opponent, any updates? Thanks Chuck.
Will be Frank Mir. Looking like in May.
would Mark Munoz meet Henderson's requirements for a big fight?
I am not sure Henderson would go to 185 for a fight other than with Silva. I think he's looking for a light heavyweight fight with a contender type, or a cameo at heavyweight. With Henderson, you never know. He's a renaissance contender.
Wonderboy have the worst post fight celebration ever? Looked like a total geek!
Whats next for Gilbert Melendez? Please don't say Josh Thomson.
Honestly, I haven't the foggiest idea. And there are times you wonder if the UFC/Zuffa officials have any better of an idea. Could be Thomson.
Is there anyone out there that can beat Jones?
Rashad Evans thinks he can, and so does Dan Henderson. As long as there are eager parties to try, we'll be able to see.
Any news on BJ Penn?
Heard the UFC was trying to get him for a fight in Hawaii, but not sure if that's happening or not. My guess is the next time we see him will be on his home soil. UFC has flirted with the idea of going to Hawaii for a couple of years, and seems like it's close to happening.
Doctor's note to smoke the hippy lettuce doesn't mean a thing. But a doctor's note for steroids and the fighter is in the clear. Seems a little stupid to me.
A lot of debate on this subject going on.
Any chance Roy nelson fights the winner of the Strikeforce HW tourney?
I think, given the fact that Nelson just lost to Werdum (who was in that tournament when it started 61 years ago), it would be unfair for him to fight the winner of the thing. At this point I just want to know when Cormier/Barnett is going down.
Does Chael Sonnen have the toughest task of any fighter if they decide to put the show in a huge stadium? Can you just imagine what would happen if he beat Silva down in Brazil?
I've contemplated that a lot. I've said this for the last couple of months: Anderson Silva has not had a rival. Rich Franklin was the closest he had, but it wasn't like Sonnen, who openly filets him in public regularly. For Sonnen to go down to Sao Paulo and fight Silva in front of 80,000-100,000 people makes for a mad scene. Should he win? Can't even imagine.
Does Rory McDonald get a top 5 WW, after he blows through Che Mills?
I hope so. There's a guy who could have a huge 2012, especially if he looks as good as he did in 2011. I think big fights are coming his way.
Will the UFC pay for Sonnen's security detail when he fights in Brazil?
Yes, they will. I believe they are working on it already.
Why do guys who lose to Anderson Silva never "count" it? Henderson taps, Belfort gets KO'd, Sonnen taps... What's the deal?
Not sure why opponents feel like the first time through was a fluke. There's no such thing as a nine-time defending fluke.
How great is Ed Herman?
Great is a strong word, but dedicated is a good one. That's a tough guy right there.
Munoz vs Bisping makes all the sense in the world - No?
The UFC rarely puts guys coming off a loss together with somebody coming off a win, but given the nature of Bisping's loss (very close), you never know.
Any chance we finally get to see Shinya Aoki in UFC, should he beat Eddie Alvarez?
First of all I hope that fight happens. Aoki/Alvarez II would be a lot of fun. Second, I would love to see Aoki in the UFC. There are so many fights for him there.
Who is Dominic Cruz fighting next?
Cruz is coaching TUF 15 opposite his arch nemesis Urijah Faber. Then they'll square off shortly thereafter, presumably in the summer.
What are you ladies talking about? I'm my own security detail!
Does Roy Nelson have the best chin in MMA?
He's got to be up there. JDS couldn't drop him. And Werdum was smashing that knee in his grill all night. That was a nasty cut above Big Country's eye. Yet, he kept coming forward. He's the "Jason" of MMA.
Roy Nelson is the Jason Voorhees of MMA.
Why is pot tested for? How does it enhance a fighters performance?
I'm not sure it enhances a fighters performance, in fact, I don't feel it does at all. It is illegal, though, and part of the testing. It's up to guys to show up clean, regardless if the testing makes sense or not.
What does the UFC do with Jon Jones if he clears out the LHW division in 2012 and the HW division in 2013? Do they start handicapping the match-ups? Haha.
Out of all the title holders, Jon Jones is already the closest to realistically cleaning out his division. If he beats Evans, and then Henderson, there isn't a lot left for him at 205 pounds. Maybe Gustafsson, if he comes along rapidly. At heavyweight, that's a whole different ballgame. Jones would still have the length and quicks, but those are brutes up there.
What is going on with Strikeforce? I read from Loretta Hunt that Showtime wants it to prosper but they don't seem to add any talent? Any info for us?
There's really no new information on what's going on with Strikeforce. Bottom line seems to be, they aren't doing enough to stir interest. Hopefully that's going to change soon (but it doesn't seem likely).
You think Nate Diaz will beat Miller and get a shot at the title?
I think if he beats Miller (tall order) he will likely get a title shot. What a strange thing that would be -- of the Diaz's, Nate got to a UFC belt first.
Who wins: Don Frye's mustache vs. Dan Severn's mustache?
Frye. That's Magnum PI stuff right there. He was a man at 14 years old.
So, have you been to any Tilted Kilts to break stories about Alistair Overeem lately?
Ha, you know, I haven't. But those Irish nachos are something.
How impressed were you with Werdum's victory over Nelson? Has he really come as far in his game as people are suggesting or did he just strongly benefit from fighting a guy who has essentially become a 250lb Chris Leben?
I think Werdum is for real. Before he flattened Nelson's nose for three rounds he outstruck Overeem on the feet (in a bizarre fight that he lost), beat Antonio Silva and demystified Fedor. Nelson was in better shape than he's been in, and he couldn't get anything done. Will take it as Werdum looks good over Nelson looks bad.
Waiting for Alan Belcher to make his return, any guess on his return opponent? I think a fight w/ Cung le would be awesome!
That's an interesting thought. I know Le wants back in there in 2012 (somewhat surprisingly), and Belcher would be a good opponent.
What champ in a different promotion would you most like to see in the UFC?
Melendez first. But would also like to see Chandler and Askren from Bellator.
Wouldn't mind Belcher vs. Palhares, and Leave Le for Mayham, personally.
If Forrest loses to Tito - should he hang 'em up? Forrest has indicated he now hates training, he didn't show up against either Silva OR Rua ... maybe he made his money, time to move on.
At this point, if you lose to Tito Ortiz (who has won once in five years), you might consider hanging them up. Bottom line with Forrest is he hasn't evolved, and he's lost some drive. That fight with Rua was bad (even with his wife about to give birth to their child). Lose to Tito, and it could be over. (Although you know it would ignite Ortiz's imagination to keep going)
Do you know if you can fail a drug test from second hand smoke?
How about hector Lombard to the ufc? I see a lot of opinions both ways on him. He is a killer or he hasn't beaten anybody. What's yoru take?
Great point. Would love to see him in the UFC. Beating up the Trevor Prangley's and Jesse Taylor's of the world only goes so far to greatness.
Chuck,Disagree that Werdum outstruck REEM--All 3 judges had REEM winning all 3 rounds--Dont forget though Werdum used to train with a prime CroCop
I am going off of Fight Metric's numbers. They had Werdum outstriking Overeem. Maybe the significant strike category went to Reem.
Is the fight against Shields Akiyama's last chance in the UFC?
It has to be. The UFC kept him around because they knew he could a selling point on this Japan card. He's trying a new weight class to reinvent himself (at the UFC's urging). If he loses to Shields, you'd have to think that's it with four L's in a row.
The problem with Ortiz - Griffin is there is no real animosity or relevancy to warrant a trilogy. At this point Tito is only interesting when he is against someone who he doesn't like and who doesn't like him. Seriously they can't talk Frank Shamrock into coming out one more time? Anything else honestly
Most likely champion to loose their belt is...?
I agree. There's no real spark here other than it's a rubber match. Rubber matches with no real relevancy aren't very eye-catching. But hey, there are people who love both fighters and, at worst, there's some nostalgia in play.
Most likely champion to lose their belt in the UFC? I'd say Edgar. Why? Because he always looks vulnerable heading into fights, even if that's not totally rational.
Now that Eddie Alvarez isn't bound to the Bellator championship, and with his disgust at not getting a rematch with Chandler, do you think he might be UFC bound in the next year or so?
I know he has a couple of fights left on his contract, but not real sure what the language is. I think he'll get Aoki and Chandler before he leaves (if he does).
Regarding Reem v. Werdum. The judges made a mistake. Werdum outstruck Reem in all three rounds in strikes AND significant stikes. Werdum won that fight.
Goodness I feel bad for American UFC fans. You need nine different channels to see events, but here in Canada we get EVERYTHING on Sportsnet. Why are we so spoiled?
I don't know. We need to take cues from Canada on everything but beer prices. Outrageous to drink out there.
Do you think, if Chael gets the belt, a Sonnen-Hendo fight is at all possible? I know they have Team Quest history, but?????
Yeah, they'd have no qualms fighting each other.
Never mind - http://www.fightersonlymag.com/content/news/15589-source-eddie-alvarez-close-to-ufc-move
Will have to look at that, but judging from the hedder maybe sooner than we think. Will ask Eddie.
Werdum Flopping AKA "pulling gaurd" cost Werdum that fight
Totally agree. It was a strange display of begging, which was most unbecoming.
Any news on MMA in New York?
Optimism renewed for 2012.
Essentially... 1 fight left, and negotiations have "soured."
There you go.
Is the UFC even thinking about giving Royce a fight, like Matt Hughes in Brazil? I have heard he is begging
Not sure if Royce is begging, but I know that he was talking about having one more fight in him while UFC 134 was happening in Rio. The guy he wants is Hughes. Throw them in that soccer stadium in Sao Paulo come June so that Sonnen has country boy company.
With Diaz out of the picture, who benefits most?
It's not GSP, that's for sure. He wanted to fight Diaz pretty badly. Would say Hendricks or Ellenberger, and possibly Koscheck.
The Poirier vs Korean Zombie fight is basically a #1 contender bout. I would've prefered to see Poirier vs Koch. You?
That fight would have been awesome. I still hope they make it. BTW, if this is THE Front Row Brian, nice job breaking the Diaz news. And check out Cajun Queen (which I'm sure you have already).
Where and How did MMA start?
There are times I think it started in a lab in somebody's basement.
Do you think Kosheck actually won his fight or did win on name alone? I thought he lost the first 2 rounds.
I thought he won it, but he looked very sluggish in doing so. Pierce is a tough guy.
Okay, people...I've got to bounce out of here. Thanks for stopping in. Since this is our third week doing the Friday chat, would love it if you could help spread the word. And if you have a question that I didn't get to, feel free to hit me up on twitter, @ChuckMindenhall.
