Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:53 PM)

Why not, let's start this early this week. Because that's just the kind of guy I am.

Paul (Greenville, SC)

Hi Pierre, will any team take a shot at Tuomo Ruutu with his injury or do you think he'll re-sign with the Canes? Thanks!

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:54 PM)

Canes say they're not trading him now

Andre (Plandome, NY)

Hi Pierre. The Islanders are in an interesting spot. 6 points out of a playoff spot. What moves do you see them making. Nabokov is not going anywhere unless things unravel. Any chance you see Garth Snow making a push for Nash? The Islanders are a team on the rise and have a lot of good assets Columbus would want. On a side note, what have you heard about arena situation. Nassau County had a hearing and it is becoming clear that Islanders need to go elsewhere in the area.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:55 PM)

Haven't heard much from the Islanders at all.... So either they're going to be quiet or Garth is working very quietly under the radar

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the New York Rangers will play in the 2011-2012 Stanley Cup Finals as well as they are playing right now?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:56 PM)

Chris, they've got a solid chance, that's for sure. To me, unless Crosby comes back and he's healthy, it's Rangers or Bruins in the finals from the East

Andrew (Chicago)

With the Hawks now on a 9-game losing streak, do you think it's possible that they will miss the playoffs? And if they do, do you think it means the end of Stan Bowman and/or Joel Quenneville?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:57 PM)

If they miss the playoffs. yes I would guess Q would be gone. But I think they will make it.FYI, technically, not that it makes Hawks fans feel any better, but it's a 9-game ''winless" streak, not losing.

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, now that the Nash-to-NYR storyline has exploded, it is obvious that top Rangers prospect Chris Kreider from Boston College would have to be included in that deal. Boomer Esiason (a huge Rangers fan who also has ties to BC since both his kids go there) said on the radio this morning that he has seen over half of Kreider's college games and thinks he could have a huge impact in the league once he gets there. Plus the Rangers would not have to bust their cap paying him for a while when he is on his entry-level deal. We all remember Kreider from the World Juniors, but from your discussions with scouts and GMs, do you get the sense he is regarded that highly as a prospect that the Rangers should make him "untouchable"? I think prospects are always unknown and if you have a chance to get the big gun, you have to do it. See Esposito, Angelo for Hossa, Marian.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:58 PM)

From what I heard today, Rangers brass really concerned about giving up too much and wrecking the good thing they have going... They really covet Nash, but how much is too much? Same question LA, Philly, Van, Tor and others are asking as they talk to Columbus

Colby Armstrong (Pittsburgh circa 2008)

Pierre, if I were Brandon Dubinsky I would start apartment hunting in Columbus. Trust me, team chemistry can only get you so far. Despite what some of the fans might say, I know from experience that being a "fan favorite" and "glue guy" and even "best friends with the superstar captain" does not offer much protection when the big fish is out there on the trade line. Ask Ray Shero, Marian Hossa and the Prince of Wales trophy how that worked out.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:58 PM)

Colby, thanks for the insight :)

Alexander Ovechkin (Washington, DC)

Pierre, are you telling me that those videos from the summer of Evgeni Malkin swimming laps at 6am and skating with a parachulte in a poorly lit Russian rink and Steven Stamkos pumping iron 4 hours a day at Gary Roberts' gym are actually paying off for both of them now? You mean recording rap videos and eating nachos on the couch doesn't win you the Hart Trophy anymore? This is news to Ovi....

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:59 PM)

Well, yeah, that was my point this week in the Rang Blog, buddy. You are welcome

Peter Chiarelli (Boston)

We're 2-4 in February. In that span, we've been shutout three times, squeaked out a win against the Preds (probably didn't derserve the W), and spanked the Dr. Jeckyll version of the Capitals. Should I be scared?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:00 PM)

Not scared, but mildly concerned. I'd be looking for a top-six forward, which I know in fact that's what you're doing

Greg (Philadelphia)

Pierre; Are the flyers really interested in Nash? If so, whats it take to get him and is it worth it?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:00 PM)

yes they are... the price is the same for any team that gets Nash: 3-4 assets. Steep price

Marco (NJ)

Do the Rangers NEED to make a move at the deadline to win the Cup?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

yes I think they to add a goal-scorer up front

Danny C (NY)

Do you think Nash will be traded?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:02 PM)

impossible to tell. One NHL GM told me yesterday that Howson told him it was no sure thing. Only if Columbus gets steep price they're asking for. Otherwise it becomes an off-season trade

Faith (Pennsylvania)

Will the Penguins have a legitimate chance of making it to the playoffs and going deep without Crosby?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:02 PM)

Making playoffs, yes. Without a healthy Crosby, no long run

Cody (Mankato, MN)

Hello Pierre. Is it getting close to selling time in MN? I realize they have a game in hand on some teams fighting for 8th, but 4 losses in a row, 1 from Anaheim and 2 from Columbus? You cannot lose to teams lower in the standings like that if you want to make the Playoffs. Also, how will this losing streak effect Minnesota's ability to sign some big name free agents? Can't help their case as many players are looking to play for cup contenders.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:03 PM)

My sense is that Wild will hang in there as long as possible before even thinking about selling. Lots of pressure to get in this year

Bruce (Pittsburgh PA)

Hey Pierre, any rumors of a top 6 winger coming to the pens? Moen or Gausted a possibility as well?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:03 PM)

I can tell you that the Pens have scouted Travis Moen and Dominic Moore last few weeks, among other players...

Dave (Wisconsin)

With the bolts on a downward spiral and out of the playoff race, should they unload some aging defensemen or try and deal malone or moore to deal with the goaltending issue? I would like to see a change in net, it has been horrible this year. The only bright spot on the season would be stamkos winning the scoring title.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:05 PM)

Unless Yzerman can get lucky before Feb. 27, finding a goalie will be top off-season priority. My guess is that next week Bolts will begin process of talking to teams about some of their UFAs like Moore or Kubina... Although FYI the Bolts and Moore's agent have been talking extension... not sure if they can find middle ground or not...

Nic (Los Angeles)

Hi Pierre. The Kings NEED Nash much more than the other teams rumored. He is the perfect fit. Doesn't Dean Lombardi have to make this happen even if it means losing Brown+Bernier in a package or Johnson Bernier in a package? Parise is not likely to choose LA in the offseason so this is their shot...he has to make this work. All the patient building this team has done has to pay off here. Thoughts??

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:06 PM)

Agreed that no teams could use Nash more than LA, not to mention pressure on Lombardi to win this year... or at least go 2 rounds.... show progress, etc.... No question Bernier would be in any package that went Columbus' way, if that's the deal the Jackets want... Re: Parise, the Kings have longed coveted him, but they wont' be alone come July 1.... Rangers, Wild, Red Wings, long list of teams that hope to take a run at Parise if he doesn't re-sign with Devils by then

james(Anaheim CA) [via mobile]

hey lebrun do you see the anaheim ducks trading lubomir visnovsky by the trade deadline and if so who fills in his place on the blue line??

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:07 PM)

Teams know he's available. But Ducks won't just dump him. They will only trade him in a tradional hockey deal that makes them better.

Chad (Indianapolis)

I've seen a lot of talk about Henrik Lundqvist for the Vezina Trophy this year, he is 27-11-4, Does Jimmy Howard's injury hurt his chances? he has 5 more wins than Lundqvist at 32-11-1, and less than half a goal against average difference between the two. What can Jimmy do to improve his chances at the award

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:08 PM)

I just posted my Vezina list today. Lundqvist is the slam dunk choice right now:http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/14674/trophy-tracker-vezina-trophy

Almeida (Oslo)

When will it become official which teams that open in Europe? Any rumours?Do you think Dean Lombardi has interest in Rick Nash? Would Jack Johnson, Jonathan Bernier + 1st be enough to grab him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:09 PM)

Almeida, thanks for joining us from Oslo (never been, would love to)What I'm hearing is that there's nothing imminent in terms of any kid of announcement/decision regarding Premiere Games at this point. The expiry of CBA looms large over this. Possible that there won't be any Premiere Games for next year because of labor situation, but that decision isn't final either

Chad (Indianapolis)

How much do you think the Red Wings PP and PK will hurt them in the playoffs? Do they have any other Achilles heels that this is covering up?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:10 PM)

I"m not worried about their special teams, but I'd like to see them add more grit in bottom six forward group. I think that's why they're interested in guys like Travis Moen or Paul Gaustad...

Cappy (NYC)

there was a picture of david krejci on my milk carton at lunch today, do you have any information on where his game went? so important for the B's to get him going again.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:11 PM)

Terrific talent he is. But he tends to do that once in a while. Like the Cup finals, where he was brilliant in Boston, but not so much for the games in Van city

Mike (SJ)

Can we stop the Nash to SJ rumors? The Sharks have no prospects, and with their lack of depth, a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 trade just doesn't make sense. I'm sure Howson said he wants Pavelski and Vlasic and I'm sure Wilson laughed and hung up the phone. Unless they can get him for Havlat, Murray, and Greiss, this just isn't going to happen.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:11 PM)

I agree the Sharks would be a long shot for the reasons you underlined, lack of the kind of assets the Jackets would want, plus a tough contract to absorb... but I can tell you the Sharks certainly like the player in question

Ross (Des Moines, IA)

Pierre, you were in attendance for the Preds/Blackhawks game last night correct? How would you compare Nashville's atmosphere at their arena as opposed to say the more established, non-original 6 arenas? (Philly, St. Louis, etc)Also, do you think there's any chance in the world Columbus would trade Nash to Nashville considering playing against him six times a year thereafter?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:12 PM)

actually no, my good friend and colleague Scott Burnside was there for us

KG (Durango)

Pierre: The Caps appear to be what they are this point. They have difficulty scoring and still have way too many defensive lapses. Now Coach Hunter seems to be at odds with Neuvirth and some of the other players about playing time and communications. Has the team bought in to the coaching change? Or is it time to admit that they simply are not going to be very good and require a new direction? Everyone seems to think, based upon past performance, that they will turn on the switch, but it appears more and more that they cannot do so. is there any hope for them?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:14 PM)

they're a bit of a mess, mind you any team that would have played this long without Mike Green and Nick Backstrom would find it hard to win games, too.... Another thought: no reason to believe this at all but a gut feeling, if this train wreck of a team can somehow just make the playoffs, just have this feeling that they might surprise with the spotllight/pressure off them as an underdog/low seed

Ice Ace (Alabama)

Saw the Sharks on NBCSN against the Capitals and they dominated the game. Now, will the Sharks try to improve their roster and what do they need to improve on?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:15 PM)

My sources tell me GM Doug Wilson has worked the phones diligently looking for top-six F.He phoned Anaheim about Selanne, Phoenix about Whitney, not sure there's a chance either one of those guys moves, however... Sharks trying to improve, that's for sure

Brian (Eugene, Oregon)

Pierre, so let's say the Sacramento Kings miss their March 1st deadline and ultimately get relocated to Seattle. Would this in any way increase Seattle's chances of getting the Coyotes if they are relocated? Or are these two situations completely unrelated?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:16 PM)

If Seattle announces they have an official plan in place to build a new arena for an NBA team, yes, that would definitley put Seattle in good stead if the Coyotes need to be re-located

Joey No-No (La La Land)

Hi Pierre! I HATE trade rumors with the passion. If you were a betting man (which you may be), which team would you put money down on the Nash sweepstakes?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:16 PM)

Rangers, Flyers and Kings would be my top three picks

James (Mansfield, Texas)

Is it time for the Stars to sell? We're going nowhere fast and Mike Ribeiro could be a nice piece for some contender.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:17 PM)

not yet, still in the race

Mike (State of Hockey)

What can the Wild expect in return for Zidlicky whenever he is dealt? Is a second or third round pick asking too much?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:17 PM)

not much given his season

John (Detroit)

Pierre; The Red Wings accomplished quite an amazing feat last night. 21 straight home wins is simply amazing. The Detroit Red Wings, however, do not measure themselves off regular season success. The only thing that matters in Hockeytown is raising banner #12. With that said, how do you see the rest of the regular season shaking out (i.e., seeding order), and how do you think the Winged Wheel will perform come playoff time? For the record, the last time the Red Wings won the Presidents' Trophy they were the last team standing in June. Thoughts???

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:18 PM)

Call me crazy but I have this feeling that Vancouver will win the West again.... we'll see though, Wings look mighty impressive

David (Detroit)

Take your pick.... Who would win in a 7 game series between Detroit and New York? Wings Home Ice? Rangers Home Ice?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:18 PM)

Regardless of home ice, would take the Wings in 7. Would be a great series. But Nicky needs one more ring :)

Ryan (Missouri)

Hey Pierre, the blues have lost D'agostini and Arnott now after its been said that they would wait for the return of McDonald and Steen before deciding on being buyers or not, does the loss of those 2 players push Doug Armstrong towards making a move? If so, who out there would be a good fit....Hemsky, Moore to name a couple?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:19 PM)

Hemsky definitely available. Nashville and LA have looked at him over the last month or so, as had Detroit...

Andy (Houghton, MI)

Joey Macdonald for Vezina? Hart?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:19 PM)

Maybe in a video game?

Nick (Chicago )

LeBrun, what is happening to the Hawks? I have been telling myself and others it was atemporary thing but they continue to play bad hockey, almosy lazy hockey. What do the hawks need to do to turn this around? What should they do at the trade deadline?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:20 PM)

what I see now is a team that has totally lost its confidence. Crazy to see

Vinny (New Jersey)

I don't understand the potential Zidlicky aquisition for the Devils. Salvadore, Larsson, Volchenkov, Green, Foster, Fayne, and a healthy Tallinder give you 7 defensemen. Is a 35 year old with a 4 mil cap hit next year really a good idea?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:21 PM)

as of now, that trade has not been consumed. yes Devils and Wild talked about it, but at this point it's not a done deal

david (nj)

you guys keep saying devils finances will keep them from signing parise, yet there were and are reports that the devils maybe getting zidlicky who is at 4mill and if it happens would be the 4th time they added salary, how long till you guys just stop wanting parise to leave?and if the devils do trade for zidlicky for a 2nd, is that a good trade? and how much would he help the devils?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:22 PM)

David, the Devils' finances have had this specific impact on the Parise situation: there have been zero contract talks. That's odd for a UFA to be. And there won't be any talks until ownership situation is resolved.

John (Richmond, VA)

What if anything are the Caps going to do at the deadline?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:23 PM)

Mysterious GM GM... one never knows what he's up to, not even his fellow GMs ... my guess? He's going to try and shake this up a bit

Mark (San Jose)

Good afternoon, Pierre. Can you please explain to me why Steve Yzerman seems to have escaped criticism for the shocking position of the Lightning this season? Acquiring an upgrade in goal doesnt seem like such a daunting task for a GM these days. It seems like such a waste of a season to me.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:24 PM)

Hard to blame the GM when the goalie who was so good last year mysteriously stops stopping puck the following season

Paul (New York)

Can you realistically see Sather and co trading for Nash with a first place team given what the rumors are of what it would cost the Rangers?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:24 PM)

depends on the price. I know for a fact the Rangers really covet Nash, But current price being discussed scares them _ and all the other teams talking to Columbus

dara (boca raton, fl)

I was just curious as to what you think of the Panthers? Will they be making any moves at the deadline? Its the first time in MANY years we aren't going to be sellers

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:25 PM)

I was told Florida wanted to get as healthy as possible first and the re-assess what they need before deciding whether or not to add

Curt S (Toronto)

Tell me everything you know about Rick Nash!!! Please?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:26 PM)

All you need to know is that Mike Babcock had Nash as one of his most trusted players when an entire country heaped incredible pressure on Canada to win gold in 2010. That should tell you a lot.

Chad (Vancouver BC)

What are you hearing about the Canucks? You don't hear a lot of rumors, it seems Gillis keeps his cards close to his chest

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:27 PM)

I know they liked Travis Moen a lot for a while... just wonder if Byron Bitz now takes care of that bottom six size instead.... I think if there's a top-six F out there that's available, they'll also do it

Pete (NJ)

With the exception of a few hiccups, the Devils have been on fire lately, taking them from a team battling for the final few spots, to contending with Philly and Pittsburg for the middle of the pack. With his stellar play leading the way, any chance of Kovy for MVP?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:28 PM)

I vote on the Hart along with other selected members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and I have to tell you I haven't heard Kovy's name mentioned with the Hart... at least not a lot... my sense is it's between Malkin, Lundqvist and Giroux at this point... but time will tell... What hurts Kovy of course is that other people would argue Parise is the MVP of the team, not him, in the end both are incredibly important to the team. Which has always hurt Datsyuk/Zetterberg when it came to Hart voting... how to you single out one player?

Sean (Montreal)

Hey Pierre, with A. Kostitsyn's remarks this morning about ice time, a trade seems imminent, but if he is a healthy scratch tonight, does that lower his trade value even more ? aside from stats..(2 goals in 22 games) (would help solve debate I have going)

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:29 PM)

My guess is he'll be gone before Feb. 27

Matthew (Buffalo)

What do you think Buffalo's chances are that they make the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:30 PM)

According to http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL.html, the Sabres' chances right now are 1.2 percent

Jeff R (Dallas)

As a Blackhawk fan I'd like to as you a question. Unfortunately, after the last 9 games I'm done asking questions and just hoping for some answers. Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to return to the fetal position to hide until this losing is over.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:30 PM)

hahahaha, best post today

Tyler (Toronto)

Despite having an abundance of defencemen, Toronto's blue line is still weak on a lot of nights. With all the talk of the talk about the Leafs hoping to acquire a top six forward, is there any thought of them bringing in another veteran blueliner if they're going to make a run at the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:31 PM)

haven't heard that from Leafs front office... but I agree with you

Al (Chicago)

Was there any truth to the Nash to Chicago rumors that got started yesterday- and for that matter, the LA rumors? If not (or so), where do you see him landing?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:31 PM)

I can only confirm that I know LA and Columbus have had discussions on Nash, as I wrote last night in a blog on this site:http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/14648/trade-deadline-nash-smyth-ruutu-news

Shane Doan (Glendale, AZ)

What is my value if I get traded now and what would it be if the 'Yotes keep me, but trade my negociation's rights at the Draft?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:32 PM)

Negotiating rights at the draft are always worth about 80 percent less... After all, all your acquiring in UFA rights at the draft is about 7-10 day window

Mike Gillis (Roger's Arena)

Hey Pierre, what's the required package that would require to land big Rick Nash? I envision this guy playing with the Sedins with no doubt, will score 50 goals, and will make Henrik/Daniel Art Ross contender for the next few years. I am willing to give up Schneider, but not Cody Hodgson.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

More than Corey Schneider, that's for sure. And I think that's what worries you

Troy (Pittsburgh)

Who is your front runner for the Hart Trophy right now? Lundqvist or Malkin?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:33 PM)

Luckily I don't have to fill out my official ballot with the NHL until end of regular season... I'll need that time to make up my mind between those two !

Justin Montini (Toronto)

The rangers have so much depth on the left side.Torts strongly prefers to play rights on the right side and vice versa. Do u think Staal could be trade bait for a top six fwd? He is currently playing behind MDZ & McD and with Eminger, especially with Erixon in the wings.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:34 PM)

Haven't heard Staal's name when I talk to other GMs.... doesn't mean he couldn't move, but just telling you what I'm hearing

Jeff (Maryland)

Realistically, do you see Jeff Carter being a good fit in Washington? He has the scoring touch that the Caps desperately need. If so, what is your opinion on what it would take to get him to Washington?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:35 PM)

yes he would be a good fit. Just not sure the owner wants another lifetime contract... might already have one of those that he regrets

Greg (Portland)

Pierre,Tomas Holmstrom just played in his 1,000th game. I know it's a long shot, but is there a place in the HOF for a player like him with such a specific skill set? He won't get in on career points (although half-a-point-a-game is still impressive), but with the success he's had (4 Stanley Cups, Olympic Gold, World Championship) you could argue he's a more viable candidate than a big point producer with fewer games played and little team success. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:35 PM)

If Steve Larmer can't get into the HHOF, not sure how Homer could

Tod (Detroit)

Amidst the Wings winning their 21st straight home game (which I still don't feel will get the recognition it deserves, considering that it is over half of the total home games they play in a season), when looking at the trade deadline and the needs that the Wings need, my stance has changed over the past couple weeks. Prior to Jimmy's injury, I was all for picking up a backup netminder, but MacDonald has proven that he's a more than capable backup at this level. With that issue being cleared up from within the organization, I would rather see the Wings stay put at this point. Cleary and Eaves are injured and will be back at some point, and youngsters like Emmerton and Mursak have done a fantastic job filling the 3rd and 4th line roles with the likes of Helm, Abdelkader and Miller. The energy that those guys bring, I would almost hate to bring a veteran in for the experience and break that up. They've got plenty of experience already, even some of the younger players have had their share of playoff time already. With the team they have, and that home record, I'm liking the Wings' chances to go all the way without making any deadline moves.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:36 PM)

great post. But I know Kenny Holland is looking ...

Sylvain (Montreal)

Salut Pierre, Que pense tu des rumeurs sur Rick Nash a Montreal?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:37 PM)

C'a me surprendrait beaucoup. Je pense pas que Montreal est sur la liste de Nash

Andrew (Toronto)

What's your sense on where the Coyotes will be playing next year? And while they never get much of a mention, Maloney and Tippett have to be part of one of the best front offices in hockey. Imagine what they could do with stable ownership and a bit of money to spend.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:38 PM)

If they can't resolve things in Glendale, and the league hasn't given up there yet, it's between Seattle and Quebec City

Jonathan (Texas)

As nice as it would be for the Sharks to trade for Nash given they have the space for him this year. Could he really work long term with them? I just don't see it working cap-wise given the vets Thornton/Marleau/Boyle and the young guys of Pavelski/Couture/Clowe. Your thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:38 PM)

agreed, tough fit... but sometimes teams can be creative...

Mike (Hamilton,on)

Hi Pierre,I'm a huge Wings fan and after Joey Mac has done a great job filling in for Howie have you heard whether the Wings are ok with Howard and Macdonald? And if so would they move Conklin and player for big man upfront to protect the stars for the playoffs? Thanks

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:39 PM)

Wings all along felt they were not going to need another backup ....

Patrick (South Carolina)

Assuming Sid comes back before the end of the season, does Kunitz stay with Geno or go back to Sid's line? Its hard to break up the awesome line that has been 18-71-14 but its also hard to say no to number 87.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:40 PM)

My guess would be Kunitz back with 87. Lots of history there

Joe (NY)

What does Jimmy Howard have to do to win the Veznia? Lidstrom to win the Norris? (he useually starts catching fire at this point in the season)

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:41 PM)

Lundqvist by a mile right now for the Vezina (the NHL's 30 GMs vote on the Vezina, I spoke to a few of them before writing my Vezina blog today). My sense is Weber or Chara for the Norris this year (selected members of PHWA vote on Norris)

Shawn (PEI)

Hi Pierre, have you heard anything (or have any theories) about which teams that Nash would have on his list of trade candidates? I am reading it may be quite a short list, but nothing specific.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:41 PM)

List has not been made public, I also think it's a bit a fluid situation with that lits. Bottom line is that Jackets will try to get best deal possible and then go to Nash and ask him if he's ok with that team

Bill (Chicago)

Pierre...When will the trade action start?...When will prices come down?...Do you expect 2/27 to be a active day?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:42 PM)

yes it will be active Feb. 27. Make sure to watch TSN in Canada that day !

Jeff Gauger (Stittsville, Ontario)

PierreWhat is the usual process these big trades (Nash?) usually take? I this case does CBJ GM call teams and say this is what I want, or does CBJ GM announce Nash is on the market thus telling interested teams to submit their best offer.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:43 PM)

My understanding is that Howson has made it clear to each team involved the kind of assets he would want and has asked teams to list the assets they'd be willing to move

Scott (Gomez)

So Pierre, what's going to happen to me?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:43 PM)

The new CBA will decide that my friend

greg (marietta ohio)

doesn't burke in toronto have the pieces that columbus needs ? defensemen and goalie are jackets biggest needs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:45 PM)

Leafs are very concerned that they worked hard last 3-4 years in rebuilding their organization depth and don't want to empty the cupboards in one trade.... but they do like Nash, yes.

EJN (Washington, DC)

With the seemingly endless avalanche of injuries to Flames players, are they likely to add someone? Who?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:46 PM)

possibly a depth forward, yes

Sergei (Madison, WI)

If Detroit beats the sharks for their 23 straight win at home, would you be willing to publically renounce your allegiance to them?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:46 PM)

haha, someone has to stick up for those Sharks !

Sylvain (Montreal)

Do you think Geoff Molson will do a big clean up after the season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:47 PM)

If Habs miss the playoffs, my prediction is that Gauthier is gone, yes

Justin (Toronto)

Hey Pierre, what are your thoughts of Nash to Toronto? Realistic or pipe dream?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:47 PM)

Toronto and Columbus have talked this week about Nash but I view the Leafs as a long shot

Doug (Orange County,NY)

I am wishing that the Rangers do not give up too much from the prospect pool. It it's not broke don't fix it.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:48 PM)

that's certainly the debate

All-Star Game (Fun for All)

We all know you hate the all star game (don't worry I agree!). I'm thinking some fine tuning makes it interesting. How about we cut the roster of all stars in half to 20 guys. Then we vote in the all stars. They get to play against the other team of "all stars" (20 players again) which are the 20 most disappointing or over-paid guys in the league. Starting roster so far includes Bryz, Gomez, Ovi, Semin...

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:49 PM)

I'm still bored.... zzzzz

Jason (SoCal)

everyone says time is going to run out on the ducks and that the hole they dug was too deep. they made up 12 points in 1 month. why cant the make up 8 in a month and a half???

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:49 PM)

I'd love to see it, great story... but I fear they will run out of time

RJ (Raleigh)

Is there a lack of trades thus far this year, or just too much coverage? Seems like more speculation that ever, but just about nother happening. Parity to blame?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:50 PM)

parity indeed. the sellers are slow to announce themselves

Jason (Los Angeles)

Trading Bernier makes me nurvous as a Kings fan. He was brought in as the savior in net the Kings needed. I love what Quick has done, but is he really one of the top guys in the NHL or is this just a great season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:50 PM)

I think Quick is for real

GBK (Lincoln Park)

Pierre, isn't it pretty likely that Rick Nash isn't going anywhere? He has a huge contract, and all the contenders are at or close to the cap, and it would require giving up a number of assets to get him.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:51 PM)

possible that it waits until off-season, correct. But Jackets will try very hard to do it before Feb. 27

Todd (CT)

How good has Kovi been lining up alongside Parise?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:51 PM)

Sensational

rob (socal)

with a win tonight the ducks would pull within 6 points of a playoff spot, and hit .500 Perry looks like he's about to go on ANOTHER huge late season run

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:52 PM)

it's a great story right now.. hard not to pull for them

Marc (Malden, MA)

Joe Corvo SUCKS

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:52 PM)

sentiment noted

Dave (NJ)

One of the biggest reasons for the Rangers sharp ascent is Del Zotto. How does a player go from being sent to minors one season to a force the next as an offensive defenseman? He has become an absolute stud.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:53 PM)

agreed

Ryan (Winnipeg)

With the Jets four points out of 8th spot do you think they will be buyers or sellers at the deadline and have heard any rumors swirling around about any Jets?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:53 PM)

at this point they're neither. They'll be 11th-hour decision makers

Jim (Johnson City)

Pierre, I love how you answered more questions in the first 15 minutes than others do in an entire live chat, guess you took typing classes. Now for an actual question, if the Flames fail to make playoffs do they fire Sutter?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:54 PM)

I did take typing classes in high school, smartest thing I ever did given that I ended up going to Journalism School. Not sure on Sutter... Flames have actually played better than I thought this season. Of course, I had low expectations for them

Al (Chicago)

It's been reported that Hawks management went into lock down, avoiding any leaks. Do you see something happening soon? We're getting desperate.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:55 PM)

I will tell you this: I'm told that the scene is a little tense right now around the management group

Rob (NJ)

Pierre Kovalchuk or Ovechkin..who do you want on your team?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:55 PM)

Datsyuk

Jeff (Great White North)

What gives today Pierre, not one question answered from Canada. Unless La La Land is in Canada.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:55 PM)

Sorry jeff, I don't look at the place lines, I swear

Matt (Orlando, FL)

Is there any way that Henrik Lundqvist doesnt win the Vezina?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:56 PM)

not in my mind

Ice Ace (Alabama)

Which one of these teams make the playoffs despite slumping at the moment(not includung the Blackhawks) and why? Senators, Maple Leafs and Wild.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:56 PM)

Hawks will make it

GBK (Lincoln Park)

Still think San Jose wins the Cup?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:56 PM)

can't back down now! haha

Mark (Toronto)

I really like Nash as a Leafs fan with him being from Brampton but doesn't Bobby Ryan seem like a better fit and more realistic to trade for in the summer?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

would cost less, that's for sure

Tim (San Jose)

Hi Pierre. I posted a question a few weeks ago about how bad I felt for Rick Nash, being in Columbus, essentially rotting away. I haven't been able to figure out if it was a mutual decision to start the trade discussions, or if one party approached the other and said, "Let's get this over with". That being said, I'm happy for him given that he's a great team guy, a guy willing to stick it out in Columbus (which makes me think that management approached him and his agent), someone very involved in the community... he deserves this move. Also, for what it's worth, I think he ends up in LA, and as a Shark fan, that scares the crap out of me...

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

my sense is that it was a mutual decision

John (Boston)

Do you think the Rangers should look to rest Lundqvist more down the stretch? He looked great last night, but you need that throughout the playoffs.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:57 PM)

yes

Jonathan (Texas)

Why is Philly even in the conversation about Nash; don't they need a Defensive leader much more than a player like Nash? Last I checked they didn't seem to have a problem scoring.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:58 PM)

ask the Flyers, not me :)

Marc (Malden, MA)

The Bruins need a top 6 forward, but aren't going to get Nash or Parise (at least for this season). So who can they get? Do they just wait for Parise this summer?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:59 PM)

as I reported last week, they really like Ray Whitney but right now hard to see Coyotes moving him since they're sitting in a playoff spot...

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:59 PM)

OK kidos, that was lots of fun. Talk again next week. Stay out of trouble.
