Chat with Farrell Evans

Nelson (DE)

What percentage chance do you give Tiger Woods winning at least 5 more career majors?

Farrell Evans
  (2:01 PM)

Good Afternoon from rainy Southern California. Let's get started.I give Tiger about a 33 percent chance of winning five more majors only because he can easily win five more Masters.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Steepest Golf Course on the PGA Tour?

Farrell Evans
  (2:04 PM)

Chris,I'm here at Riviera where it's pretty hilly. Pebble Beach has some steep inclines. It's hard to say. Your questions are always tough. Send me them a week ahead, please.

JY (TO)

Who had it tougher - Jack vs. 15ish guys who knew how to win the biggest tournaments, or Tiger, who faces less guys who know how to close, but literally 100 guys that could win any given tournament?

Farrell Evans
  (2:11 PM)

JY,I won't compare generations. But I will say that Jack won with a horrible golf ball, on courses that were not as pristine as what Tiger plays today. But at the same time the depth of the tour was not what it is today. Those 15 guys that Jack had to beat were the only guys who had a chance to win the tournament.

JY (TO)

Will we see any current professional athletes outside of golf ever play competitively on the nationwide or seniors tours?

Farrell Evans
  (2:13 PM)

I wouldn't count on it. Being a good country club scratch player is nowhere near the typical tour player. John Smoltz, most recently learned this when he tried to play in a Nationwide Tour event.

JY (TO)

Tiger will end the year at what OGWR? I say he is at #6 in the world comes December 31st 2012

Farrell Evans
  (2:14 PM)

Why can't he get back to No. 1 by the end of the year?

JY (TO)

Do you agree that Tiger will break ultimately hold the record for most tour wins (I beleive he is 11 back)? The record for majors, that is a little less clear...

Farrell Evans
  (2:16 PM)

That's a good bet. He'll catch and pass Sam Snead's 82, unless he loses interests in the game. I had forgotten about this record. We spend so much time talking about Jack's record, but Snead's 82 wins is equally impressive.

JY (TO)

Which rookie is really going to break out this year ala Keegan Bradley last year?

Farrell Evans
  (2:18 PM)

I have said since Q-school finished that Harris English would make the biggest impression from this year's batch of rookies. I like his game and cool demeanor. So far he's made the cut in every event that he's entered.

JY (TO)

Hey Farrell,Will you be covering the Master's this year (or any of the other 3 majors)?

Farrell Evans
  (2:19 PM)

Yes, I will be at all four majors.

Guy ((Chicago))

Tiger ends at #3.

Farrell Evans
  (2:31 PM)

Guy,Who will be 1 and 2?

Ed (Long Island)

I'm a big Phil fan, Sunday was fun to watch...it was getting tough recently. Anyway, when do these young guns start winning on a regular basis, DJ, Mahan, Watney, Fowler, Kim, Kuchar...etc? This year you have 2 40 something and 3 generally non-descript winners. Makes you appreciate the 40 wins for Phil and the ridiculous 71 for Tiger. Knowing how to win and close not an easy trait to have.

Farrell Evans
  (2:33 PM)

Ed,Phil and Tiger are as about as dominant as we will probably see for the next several generations.

Robb (Colorado)

Hey, Farrell, So Tiger is going to play 3 weeks in a row. Do you think this will help him or is it more of a mental thing now and playing more won't necessarily improve it.

Farrell Evans
  (2:45 PM)

Robb,I think Tiger has figured out that he needs to play more to stay sharp both mentally and game wise. When everything is clicking you don't need all the reps, but he's still fighting old swing demons.

Ed (Long Island)

Why does the media keep stressing Tiger hasn't won in 20 something PGA starts? The Chevron seemed like a nice win with a nice field, hell, got more OWGR points than Pebble.

Farrell Evans
  (2:45 PM)

Ed,Chevron had a tiny field. Tiny. Tiger needs to win a full field event.

Ed (Long Island)

What's happened to Camillo Villegas? Ended 2009 winning 2 huge tournaments, hasn't really been heard from since.

Ed (Long Island)

Do you think the changes in Phil's game will now make him a more consistent contender at the British Open's? Finished 2nd last year, Sunday with some rain and win, 3 shots better and he talked a lot about ball control.

Farrell Evans
  (2:50 PM)

Nothing will ever make Phil's game consistent. That's not his approach. Butch Harmon has helped him understand better what he's doing, but Phil is an artist, a craftsman.

Ed (Long Island)

Does Natalie Gulbis now fly to the top of everyone's list for partners in these sily season events?? She'd make mine!!!

Farrell Evans
  (2:52 PM)

The silly season is about the only thing that Natalie has a chance of winning. I'll give her credit though for having a victory under her belt and for continuing to try to get better.

Ed (Long Island)

How "focused" do you think Phil will be this week or are we looking at a let down?

Farrell Evans
  (2:53 PM)

Phil was great in his interview today. He is in good place in his game. He was concerned about his game, but now I think he can see his way to Augusta.

Guy (Chicago)

Rory and Luke. Rory is playing best in world right now. Tiger #2.

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

That can happen, but it's a good chance that guys like Sergio and Phil might finish in front of him.

Adam (Work)

Are you tired of answering "is Jack or Tiger better" question? And just wanted to say Jack did play with a horrible golf ball on courses that were not as nice as today. However, everyone during Jack's time played with the same conditions. Just as everyone during Tiger's time plays with the same conditions. It is impossible to compare two different generations.

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Adam,Ok. Tiger was better because he won in a more dominating fashion. He hit more amazing shots. But Jack was great, too.

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)
