Chat with Chuck Cooperstein

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:01 AM)

Welcome to the chat as the Mavs have reeled off five straight wins, and now head toward Hurricane Lin, with a stop over in Philly which will be nothing short of a Pier 6 Brawl, worthy of Philly. Always love this trip. Lots of friends and family, and this time the hoops should match it

Jason (Fort Worth)

I see the Mavs are about 16:1 odds to win the NBA finals. Any reason I shouldn't fly to Vegas and put down 5,000 before that changes? I think the team looks good enough to make a serious run at this thing. Also, any time estimate on the Delonte injury? Is this similiar to Terrys hand injury a few years ago? I believe he missed two weeks, which was a miracle. Thanks.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:02 AM)

Being that I'm not the gambling guy, I can't tell you what to do with your hard earned cash, but they are a serious player. No doubt. The depth is astonishingly good and the defense is playing at a historic level. As for West, I don't recall the JET injury being that bad, and they don't know how long he'll be out. But he will be missed. he has been playing terrific

Nick (Utica)

With West out,and if Jones doesn't work, will Rick and Mark look to free agents?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:03 AM)

Nope. they're rolling with Jones, as they should. Roddy will be back soon so that will give them another guard

Austin (Fort Worth)

Weekly Chat with Coop. One of the bright spots of my week!Do you think Shawn Marion can slow down all the "Linsanity" hype? Marion has made some good point guards look bad this year, most recently Ty Lawson last night.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:05 AM)

Can't wait to see if Rick Carlisle goes in that direction. On one hand it make sense. On the other hand, if Carmelo is in the lineup, he is still their best offensive threat and that's where Marion would likely spend most of his time. But for specific moments? Absolutely

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:07 AM)

Those of us who have lost parents prematurely know the heartache Roddy is feeling right now. There are many who, as a result of something like this, totally throw themselves into what they're doing and come out more mature and stronger for it. Hopefully, that's what will happen with Roddy

James (Dallas, TX)

Do you think we will see even more of a regression from Roddy? My heart goes out to him for his loss. This can't help his confidence or psyche.

Steven (Bedford)

Coop, Marion for all Defensive team!

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:10 AM)

I don't see how you could keep him off, especially if the Mavs keep playing defense like that. I guess his competition would be Andre Iguodala from Philly, and of course LeBron. But there is no more versatile defender than Marion, and its great that people are starting to see it. If he does get put on Lin and shuts him down the way he has with Rubio, Paul and Lawson, it would probably clinch a spot for him

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:12 AM)

BTW, those three PG combined for 29 total points on 8-28 FG shooting (28.6 %)

Tyler (Fort Worth)

Is it just me or did Odom actually look comfortable last night? Is he finally coming around?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:13 AM)

He's been terrific the last three games. Assertive. Aggressive. No hesitation. If he's going to shoot, he shoots. If it's a pass, he passes. This is what everyone has been waiting for. And now with West out for awhile, and JET gone for tomorrow night in Philly, don't be surprised to see him take a few turns at the 2

JT (Dallas)

Who will spell Carter at the 2 guard on Friday? No Jet, no Roddy, no West. Who else is agile enough to cover guards besides Marion?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:15 AM)

See how the Mavs handled things last night vs Denver. It's not like Philly's 2 guards can't be covered. Meeks is a spot up shooter and Turner is a decent player, but not uncoverable with a definable skill

JT (Dallas)

Has Kidd been working with D. Jones? He sure did thread the needle with that pass from the left wing to Marion on the opposite low block.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:17 AM)

Jones is an excellent passer. He really is a PG in a SG body. Now he needs to learn how to make a few shots. He had some great drives to the rim that he should have finished last night. But he knows how to get in the lane and he knows how to get fouled. Those are good qualities. he's been a hard worker. I think the Mavs are very interested to see how he does with a bit more run

Jerome (Queens, NY)

Are the Mavs going to be active during the trade deadline?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:18 AM)

No. They have a plan. We all know what the plan is. We'll see if they can execute the plan. But that can't happen until July.

Mason (Dallas)

Do you see Kidd becoming a coach when his playing days are over? He would be such an asset on the bench?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:20 AM)

I don't know. He certainly thinks the game like a coach, and the players who play with him marvel at his knowledge. But I do know he loves his golf, so I guess we'll just wait to see. And it could be a while since he says he wants to play two more years

JT (Dallas)

How many Mavericks do you think would start for an average NBA team? I say Dirk, Kidd, Carter, West, Terry, Marion, Odom, and Haywood. Is this the deepest team in the NBA?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:22 AM)

You'd be hard pressed to find another team with more proven talent than the Mavs. That's what they're counting on to get them through the vagaries of this regular season. And then it gives Rick Carlisle all kinds of crazy options once the playoffs start

Ted (Addison)

I know you said that the Mavs won't get another guard, but I think Sean Williams spot is not needed with Wright, Ian, Yi, Cardinal on the bench. What possible free agent guards are out there now? Also, has Wright moved into the #2 center over Ian?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:32 AM)

I'd have to say that Wright has moved ahead of Mahinmi, but both are situationally based. Mahinmi got the first call last night, but picked up two quick fouls and Wright came in for him. As for guards, I don't know who the best one is, but I do agree with you that Williams seems to be unnecessary with all the other bigs here. Still, I don't think there's anyone on the street the Mavs would feel more comfortable with in a short term situation than Jones, so they'll just keep what they have

JT (Dallas)

I think Brandon Wright could win the Slam Dunk competition. Have you seen anything in practice that would confirm that, Coop?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:33 AM)

He can certainly leap, but I don't know what his creativity level is. that's what wins those things. Not how high you can jump. If that were the case, Javale McGee of Washington would have won last year

Adam (Dallas)

How good can the mavs be? Is Dirk back to normal?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:35 AM)

I don't think Dirk is quite back to normal, although he is obviously much farther along than he was when he was shut down, but I do think there is still a very high ceiling for this team. We only saw a brief glimpse vs the Blazers and Clippers what they might be like when they have all hands on deck and in shape. And if I'm a Mavericks fan, I would have been pretty excited to see that

Teddy Dupay (Colleyville, Texas)

Anyway Dallas looks at a Eric Gordon or Nick Young at the end of the year?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:37 AM)

Gordon is restricted and won't be going anywhere, and his injury issues are going to be a big concern for any team moving froward. Young can really shoot, but i don't think you'll be seeing him unless the mavs fail in their grand plan to land Howard and Williams. Then they'd have to move to Plan B. and i don't know if he would be considered part of that

Austin (Dallas)

Will Chandler get his ring on Sunday at the Garden or do the Knicks come here this season?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:39 AM)

Knicks come to Dallas on March 6, so Chandler will get his then. Sunday was going to be a big deal with the Mavs and chandler getting together for the first time, but now throw the LIn madness into the mix and Carmelo coming back. Well, what a tangled web we weave...

Chuck Cooperstein
  (11:40 AM)

And on that note we'll close it down for today. Hope you'll join us over the weekend in Philly and NY,and then of course Boston and the Lakes the final two games leading to the All Star break on ESPN Dallas 103.3 . We'll chat again here next Thursday
