OK we are set to go with the Texas football chat. Might even throw in a few hoops and recruiting questions as well. OK, a lot of recruiting and little bit of hoops.
With the early delay for Texas Jr. day on commits but it seems that made some ground with the verbal commits of Raulerson, Robinson, and Jake Oliver. Along with the later Swoopes it seems like Texas is setting up nicely for another strong class. Do you like their chances for a strong 2013 BCS contention and National Champs?
No doubt they are going to be a contender in 2013 if they get the QB situation figured out by then. If Brewer is coming off a redshirt year not sure i like their chances too much. But if he gets some quality time as a true freshman that could change some things for Texas.
Who will be the Quarterbacks for Texas for 2012?
I am going with Ash as the starter. But the more I think about it the more I think they may not just throw that redshirt on Brewer. Might be wise to get him some series here and there in case Ash is a complete bust as they need Brewer in 2013.
Carter, I think Texas has been in on a lot of top OL lately...why have they not panned out...Do u recall someone being the top OL in the draft lately?
Poor coaching. And you are right they have not panned out. Texas has not had an offensive lineman picked in the NFL Draft since 2008. Tony Hills, a converted tight end, was taken by the Steelers that year. Baylor has had two first rounders and a third rounder in the past three years. TCU has also had three guys taken since 2009.Texas has done an awful job of selecting the right offensive linemen and then a worse job at developing the talent.
What are the chances Bergeron and Brown have 1000 yrd season this upcoming year? [healthy of course]
Wrote about Bergeron over at HornsNation today and I think he really could be a guy that gets a ton of inside yards. Brown had 700-plus yards and was injured. Bergeron had 300-plus yards in five quarters of action. One of them will go for at least 1,200 but remember they are going to have to share the football with Gray.
If i throw about 150 to 200yrds a game without TO's.. I see this team going back to BCS..
Maybe the Cotton Bowl. Still need to see how good the linebackers are going to be to commit to the BCS level bowl. But if you throw as many picks as you did this year Texas is headed back to San Diego.
Is Ricky Seals-Jones the 2013 version of DGB? Must pick up for the Longhorns?
Not as big-time as DGB. But he is a crucial get for Texas. The main thing is he is versatile. Texas would love to get him to a spot physically where he could be a tight end.
Is Texas going to actually pursue the recruitment of Robert Nkemdiche or are they just throwing their hat in the ring to see if he's interested?
They are just throwing their hat in the ring. Bo Davis knows Grayson high school coach Mickey Conn from his days at Bama. Conn was Bama player under Stallings. So it never hurts for Texas to put out feelers especially if there is some kind of connection there. Robert is a Bama or Georgia guy though.
Are people judging David ash too quickly he was only a true freshmen. Could you see him developing into a really good quarterback overtime. What are his biggest physical weaknesses.
I would start with the fact that he cannot throw the deep ball with any sort of accuracy. In high school he could just heave the ball up there and the 5-foot-6 DBs were unable to fend off the wide receivers. In college you have to be somewhat accurate. He does not use his legs well in the throw which is why he cannot throw it all that deep. He can be an adequate college QB if he fixes is mechanics. But highly doubt he will ever be more than that.
Has Marquise Goodwin decided if he will play 2012 FB?
Oh he is playing. We have a story at HornsNation running tomorrow on this topic. The issue is when can he work out with the team this spring.
Will Q Diggs be a starter this year at CB over Byndom?
Byndom and Diggs play on opposite sides of the field. Both started last year.
Who will be starting at DT this year- Brandon Moore, Malcom Brown, Chris Whaley,......?
I really like Chris Whaley. I think he has the feet, size and athleticism. Question is whether or not he has the motor and the hand skills. D tackles have to be very skilled with their hands. Moore is going to play a ton. They did not bring him in here to sit. Ashton Dorsey is the other guy you need to remember. He started last year and will be the favorite to start next to either Moore, Jackson or Whaley. Brown is going to be a backup.
UT is ranked at the bottom of the conference yet Ive read some columns that say they are predicted to win out. Whats your take?
I'm guessing you are talking basketball. And they are not going to win out because they have to play at KU.
Who will host the Wildcat for us this year? Hicks or Gray??
There are a ton of guys who could do it. Kendall Sanders and Daje Johnson are two that come to mind. And then of course Gray may be a guy who can do it.
Where are we in the runnings for MONSTER 2013 center Darius James??
Very good friends with Camhron Hughes who just signed with Texas out of Harker Hieghts. So the chances are pretty good. He sounds like he wants to play defense. Texas may need him on the o line though.
Ricky-seals jones. Rashaad samples. Dannon cavil. Updates please. And do you anything about this guy Jake roh who caught passes from Connor brewer?
RSJ announces tomorrow. Texas has a very good chance. Samples is a guy that really likes Texas Here is a link to a story William Wilkerson did http://insider.espn.go.com/colleges/texas/football/recruiting/story/_/id/7583073/texas-longhorns-wr-target-rashaad-samples-silencing-doubters
Carter, We've picked up some pretty good recruits now for the upcoming year. I imagine people will stop "freaking out" so much about it especially with some of the commits ya? Also, now that we have who we do, who are the coaches going to set targets on?
Texas has done well this past week and with RSJ set to announce tomorrow it is turning into a big February for Texas again. JD@ is also this weekend. Texas has invited some pretty big names and should grab a couple. George Baltimore is a guy they need to concentrate on. Also need to really get some o linemen. Raulerson was a huge get. But Texas needs to start stockpiling the guys in the trenches.
who will be the starting lb for texas
Hicks, Edmond and Cobbs. Not sure if anyone can beat out those three.
Hey Carter, do you see Texas returning to the national championship game in the next two to three years? With all of this young talent it leaves Texas fans looking forward to the future to see what these guys can do.
Texas is setting itself up for a solid run through 2014. Big thing is they need to get deeper on the offensive line and deeper in the secondary. Also keeping this coaching staff together will be very difficult. I see Diaz getting another job after the 2012 or 2013 season.
How serious are we to take the quarterback "competition" in spring camp? What does the coaching staff thinks is to be gained by not announcing a starter? Can you see a situation where David Ash isn't the starter at the beginning of next season?
I agree with you Jeff really think Ash is going to be the starter going into 2012. This needs to be settled in the spring because whomever they select as the starter - and it is going to be Ash - needs to become a leader in the summer. So if the coaches can just come out and give that guy a vote of confidence then maybe the team will believe in him. Then again if the guy can;t throw a 30-yard pass it is hard to believe in him
Who is thought to be the next recruit to commit? Also, how many games does Texas need to win in the conference tourney to feel safe about getting an at large bid? That's assuming they win 2 of the last 3 regular season games.
First the football. Next commit should be RSJ. He announces Wednesday. OK now for hoops. Texas is 1-8 in games decided by two possessions of less and 1-7 against ranked teams. The only win was against No. 22 Temple. Would you put that team in the tournament?Texas will win two of its last three but has to win a Big 12 tourney game to get in.
Big time follower of the chat Carter, I love your work. Just curious if we have to worry abour Swoopes being upset that the staff is still bringing in J.T. Barrett for JD2. Go Knicks and Horns!
I saw that Barrett was on the list and that was a bit of a shocker. But just because he is coming does not mean he is going to be offered. You have to think that the coaching staff told Swoopes if he committed he would be the guy for the 2013 class. So I am think that while Barrett is coming to JD2 he might not get swooned over now that Swoopes has committed.
Who do you think will make the biggest improvement from last season to this season on both sides of the ball?
Well if you read HornsNation I wrote that exact story today. Go check it out. I think both of the stories are free content, meaning you do not have to be an insider.
Who do you think the next commitment in the 2013 class will be>
RSJ. Look for it tomorrow around lunch.
Christopher Robinson, DT, Shreveport (La.) Woodlawn and Josh Thomas, OL, Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian are both supposed to attend JD2. But the real visits from the way out of state kids like from Florida guys will not come until summer or officials. Just too difficult to travel right now.
Any news of some out of state kids making the journey to Austin for JD2? Does Texas have a good shot at any of the out of state kids? Cravens from cali or Harris from Florida??
Oops see below answer. Started typing before i posted the question. Sorry
Don't you have to feel the conference is yours for the taking in Austin this season with OU having to travel to both Morgantown and Fort Worth at the end of the season with archrival Okie State sandwiched in between? Texas gets WVU and TCU at home, so they really have no one to blame but themselves if they don't return to the top of the Big XII? Your thoughts?
Well the issue is that Texas has a tough stretch with OK State, WVU and OU. So navigating those three games is going to be difficult. Texas has to go to OK State as well. And then the final games against TCU and KSU are going to be tough. TCU is at home but KSU on the road in the winter is not a fun place to play.
Hey Carter, you may have addressed this earlier, but why is all the QB talk this year got it as only a three horse race? Whats up with Overstreet, and are they red shirting him?
Jalen is not coming in until August so that is going to put him way behind. Just o way for him to really compete with three guys who went through spring.
Hey Carter, looks like the Aggies are taking a page from Texas' playbook and getting quite a few early commits. I was wondering if any of these early commits are players Texas is interested in or players they have offered?
Sumlin is grabbing receivers for sure. Texas has one TAMU commit schedule to attend JD2 with Kerrick Huggins a DT from Dallas Skyline.Texas is getting who it wants in Oliver and RSJ at the wide receiver spots. If Samples joins they will be set there as well. Texas also got the quarterback it wanted. So the Horns are still doing just fine.
seems like the Horns are overloaded in the backfield, how are they all going to get touches?
Well the QB is not going to throw the ball so that is one way. If you think of it like this it could work: Texas gets the ball for 65 offensive plays. That's 15-20 passes and 40-45 plays they can run it. Brown, Bergeron and Gray can split those 40 carries. One gets hot they ride him. Plus they can get the ball with swing passes out of the backfield.
Will Swoopes fit in with Harsin's offense or was getting him to commit too good to pass up regardless of the type of offense he runs?
He is the type of athlete that makes an OC mold an offense around him. I don't doubt that Harsin is already dreaming up new schemes for Swoopes.
I know its a year away, but recruiting a 5 star QB with a VY skill set is a big deal. Brewer reportedly did not want to come to UT if there were 3 other QBs there. Does the recruitment of Swoopes have any affect on the current UT quarterbacks?
Not with Brewer. Here is the thing: Let's say Brewer plays this year, which I believe he could as a backup or even a late season starter. Then TS comes in and redshirts his freshman year like VY did. OK so now Brewer is a junior and TS is just a redshirt freshman. Brewer plays two season and is gone. TS takes over full time when he is a junior That is exactly how a program wants its QBs to line up.
Lots of rumblings that Greg Davis is about to become OC at Iowa. Would you please put a positive spin on this?
What's the biggest change going to be for the Longhorns football program in the 2012 season?
Quarterback. And depth in the secondary. Plus the tight end spot. Texas is loaded everywhere else. If the QB can just manage the game I think Texas wins nine or 10.
I just visited Texas last week for the 1st time (Dallas) and loved it. I have already booked a trip next month to Austin. I am a HUGE sports fan. What should I do on the UT campus?
Actually one of the little known tours of the campus allows people to go up in the UT tower. You can book it and a historian takes you up there. It is pretty amazing to see UT from that perspective and also to realize what happened there int he 60s.And stop by president Bill Powers' office. It's on the forth floor. I am sure he would be glad to have you. Disch Falk Feild is a good place for a baseball game too so make sure you check the schedule
Please don't answer anymore questions that ask if Diggs will start over Byndom, just a waste of space. But what big time recruits do you see committing next for the Horns?
Seriously. What was he thinking. I think Samples and RSJ could be the next two guys. Obviously RSJ would be a huge get and he is set to announce on Wednesday.Texas needs some linemen from JD2 to commit as well.
Will Tyrone Swoopes career come closer mirroring that of Vince Young or Garret Gilbert?
Gilbert was a stud in high school but he was a drop back passer. He was also brought onto a staff that had become complacent and forgot how to coach players once they got to the college level. Swoops is a five-tool guy. He is going to get much better coaching and should benefit from a redshirt season.
what is the dream scenario now that tyrone swoops has committed making the qb situation more complicated
References it earlier but you would like to get two years of separation between Brewer and Swoopes. Tehn as Brewer is a junior you let the redshirt Swoopes have a few offensive packages.
Will DeMarco Cobbs see the field for the Horns this season?
Oh no doubt. I think he will start alongside Hicks and Edmond. Cobbs had issues with that forearm healing up last season and that cost him. But he is a player that needs to be on the field.
with Ash, McCoy, Brewer in now and Overstreet coming in Fall and then you add Swoopes to fall of 2013. My guess is that 1, 2, or even 3 could leave especially with Swoopes possibly not wanting to RS whats your thoughts?
Well what is the harm in losing McCoy or Ash? Not too much. As for the other situation check out the answer below.
Hey Carter...Applewhite was a pretty good QB when he was at Texas and he is being regarded as a good teacher...can't he just sit down with Ash and work on the mechanics?
You would think. But let's take Tebow and I hate referencing Tebow but here it applies. The guy learned one style and has fought like heck to try and change it. He hasn't done it yet. Very hard to unlearn bad habits especially when 300 pound d tackles are coming at you.
How is the development of Jackson Jeffcoat coming along? He was a big recruit for us and gave some quality playing time last year, do you see him as an All Big 12 type of player this year?
He had to have surgery on his chest muscle and will miss the spring. So that hurts a little bit. But he got much better later in the season. And even with the torn pec muscle he pulled down RG3 for a sack. He is going to be very good and will be fresher this season because Shiro Davis can come in and give him a breather.
With Swoopes already committing to UT this past week, will the Justin Manning signature prove to the most heated recuiting battle between the Red River rivals this year?
Everybody wants the big defensive tackle. Jackie Shipp, OU's recruiter for tackles, does a good job with those Dallas kids. But Bo Davis has proven that he can land some pretty big time guys. This one is going to be a fight.
You mention Diaz leaving in the near future which I have heard rumblings of and I wouldn't be surprised by. I never hear anything about Harsin leaving for a head coaching gig? Is the demand for him not there? Is he happy being an OC?
Harsin is not ready to be a head coach yet. Just not polished enough. plus he has only ever coached at Boise and Texas. He needs more seasoning and quite frankly his offense did not turn that many heads this year. Give him a year or two and he will be a head coach type guy.
Jackson Jeffcoat? How is he coming along?
Just answered that one. Surgery on his torn pec muscle. Out for spring.
Who are some of the out of state guys getting recruited by the Longhorns? Maybe some names other that the guys from Lousiana and Oklahoma. Possibly Marcell Harris or Su'a Cravens? And what kind of chances do we have with them?
Harris is a guy that will be a reach for the horns just because it hard to get a guy like that away from those SEC schools. There are a couple of linemen coming over from Shreveport this weekend for JD2 - Josh Thomas and Christopher Robinson. Robinson is a defensive guy. Thomas is on the o line.
Which Oklahoma kid will prove to be a more productive Longhorn, Josh Turner or DeMarco Cobbs?
Cobbs. Turner is behind Diggs and Byndom. Now Turner is really fast and could see some action in nickel and dime. They like Turner. but he may have to wait for Byndom to go pro after 2012 before he gets a lot of time on the field.
Whose recruiting class is better right now - Texas or A&M? Do you think Sumlin's offense can be successful in the SEC?
Texas has the better class because I think they have the better QB and if they get RSJ that puts them over the top.Well, Arkansas is pretty successful throwing the ball around so yes I think Sumlin can be somewhat successful. But he has got a tough, tough road ahead. He has to play LSU, Auburn, Bama and Arkansas every year. That is very hard to do.
Which top in state basketball players are likely to become Longhorns in 2013? Also, is Cameron Ridley going to sign his LOI?
Ridley is big issue. Texas desperately needs this guy to sign and get on campus as soon as possible. But it is not going to happen anytime soon. It has been a big fiasco mainly because of his AAU coach.
He is huge 6-7, 310. But right now he might be more of a guy for Baylor or TCU.
Harkers Heights Ja'Braylin Thomas OL committing to UT???
Oops see below answer.
Do you think Diaz will wait for the Longhorns to have more success as a whole before he takes a head coaching job? I.e. BSC games, or a chapionship? Or is it just a matter of waiting a few years?
If they are top 20 on defense next year he will get an offer and probably depending on the place, go.
Thanks for the time and we will see you next week at the same time.
