Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:00 PM)

Greetings from Montreal everybody, where I'm taking in Stars-Habs tonight.Let's get this going !

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NHL Team is Absolutely Terrible So Far this season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:01 PM)

Les Blue Jackets de Columbus

Cody (Mankato, MN)

Hello Pierre, I didn't watch my team on Hockey day in America because I didn't feel like watching the Wild get an 8 game losing streak and get pummeled by the bruins on National tv... Then I saw the highlights... What? Once again I am reminded that you can never predict what will happen in the NHL. Anyways, could this win be a turning point (FINALLY) for the Wild to make a run at a spot or is this just a case of a goalie being hot for 60 minutes?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:02 PM)

Cody, hate to say it, but I don't think there's any way the Wild make the playoffs this season

Cappy (NYC)

Salut Pierre-GM GM have any tricks up his sleeve this next week?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:03 PM)

As I reported last week I know the Caps were scouting Antoine Vermette.... I hear Mike Ribeiro is on the market as well and you wonder if the Caps shouldn't be looking at him as well but that I don't know for a fact... either way, my guess is GM GM will be make a few deals between now and Monday. he has to.

Ricky (Livermore, CA)

Hi Pierre, Any word from the Sharks on the status of Vlassic and Pavelski? The puck Joe blocked with his head looked pretty scary.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:04 PM)

Sorry Ricky I've been in Montreal the last day and a half focusing on a PK Subban feature story I'm going to write and wrote a Stars blog today so haven't had time to check in on that

Ice Ace (Alabama)

Do you believe the Senators will make the playoffs as Anderson and the team has righted the ship?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:05 PM)

yes I do

Sean (Colorado)

What players should the Stars Target at the trade deadline?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:06 PM)

If I were the Stars, I'd try to see what it would take to get JVR out of Philly. I think the Flyers are willing to move JVR and he's be a nice young piece for Dallas...

jimh (miami, fl)

The Panthers of 2012 look like the Panthers of 2010 and that's no good at all. (I want the Panthers of last November back). Who will GM Dale Tallon pick up in the next week to fix the scoring problem, and what will it cost the team? Could they get Hemsky, Ruutu, or dare I dream Nash?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:09 PM)

Jim, I don't think the Panthers would be interested in a rental player... I think if Sam Gagner were in play _ and I'm not sure he is _ that's the kind of guy that would really interest Florida

Zachary Julian (Los Angeles)

Do you think the Anaheim Ducks can pull off a run to make it to the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:10 PM)

An amazing story. Hard not to cheer for them. But ultimately, I think they'll fall short. The math catches up to you

Rob (Boston, Ma)

Pierre,The Horton and Peverley injuries are obviously hurting the team. Will the Bruins make a blockbuster deal or add some some small pieces? If so, who could be coming/going? Where will the Bruins finish in the East? Thanks for taking my question.Keep up the good work. - Rob

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:11 PM)

Rob, for sure what I'm hearing is that the B's would like to add a top-six forward. But they're not willing to move anything from their current roster, has to be picks/prospects in return... I think Ales Hemsky is on their list somewhere, but right now price for Hemsky is too high as other teams around the league are finding out...

Richard (Toledo, OH)

With the news that Pavel Datsyuk is out for "two weeks" after minor knee surgery, doesn't this up the urgency level for finding another forward? What are your thoughts on Paul Gaustad finding his way to Detroit? Thanks

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:12 PM)

yes the Wings do like Gaustad. No question

Dan (Rochester, MI)

If you're Ken Holland, what is your top priority at the trade deadline? Depth defenseman, scoring forward, physical forward?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:12 PM)

Physical forward

Robert (West Bloomfield, MI)

If Ken Holland doesn't make a couple trades to round out this Red Wings roster at the trade deadline, don't you think he's doing a disservice to Nick Lidstrom (and other key vets) by not going all in this season? Detroit is always an experienced, veteran-laden team by choice a?? Why not be bold for once and be willing to trade a 1st round draft pick and some non-Brendan Smith prospects? The window is closing fast for winning a Cup with this core group of players.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:13 PM)

They are trying, believe me, but they're not going to overpay for rentals

Bruce (Detroit)

Pierre - between Bryan Allen and Travis Moen, who is the best bet to land with the Wings and is there any chance they could grab both?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:13 PM)

Am told the Habs are leaning towards not moving Moen... we'll see

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, we all know ridiculous trade proposals are part and parcel for sports talk radio. But can you clear up some things about the Nash trade scenario? Last night I heard caller after caller in NY saying how if the Rangers wait right up to the deadline maybe they can land Nash for Dubinsky or Carl Hagelin straight up, or for only a first round pick. People, Nash is NOT a free agent! He is the Columbus captain and is signed for 6 more years! Their motivation for trading him is not because he is going to leave for nothing July 1, but rather because they want to re-stock their entire organization and start over. In short, they can't screw it up. If their managers have any respect for themselves and their (few) fans, a Rangers trade would have to start with something like Dubinsky (for cap reasons), Chris Kreider, Tim Erixon and at least one first round pick (if not more picks). Or else just don't trade him at all or wait for the summer when non-playoff teams can also bid. But then again, after the Carter deal and the Wisniewski contract...Columbus could maybe screw this up...

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:14 PM)

No way Nash is moved for less than a stellar package. I guarantee you that.

Allen (Sharks Territory) [via mobile]

Pierre, what is up with my beloved sharks?! They just can't be consistent. Do you see Doug Wilson tinkering more with the roster before the 27th?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:15 PM)

I hear Doug Wilson is very aggressive in trying to make a deal... I'd be very surprised if he didn't make another deal before Monday's deadline

Kyriakos (Pittsburgh)

Pierre, with as well as the Pens have held up without Crosby, do you think they have any legitimate shot at taking the Cup this year? Even though Malkin is playing out of his mind recently, I just don't know if they can get to that next level without Sid. They are a very talented team, but I think Crosby at 100% puts them over the top.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:16 PM)

I don't see them winning the Cup without Crosby

Courtroom 6, Eviction Docket [via mobile]

Now that the Caps are soiling the Serta on a regular basis, are they close to being sellers and, if so, who are they most likely to move?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:16 PM)

not sellers.... they're all in for this year...

casey (il)

should the coyotes try to resinge ray withney and vrabta and shane d and go coytes and any news on the coytes owner ship issues

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:17 PM)

They want to re-sign Doan and Whitney but can't do anything until their ownership situation is resolved

Zach (LA)

Pierre,Do you think Anaheim can pull of a run and make the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:17 PM)

hope so, would be a fantastic story

Andrew - Cayman Islands [via mobile]

Hi Pierre, After another big game by Erik Karlsson do you put him in the mix for the Norris trophy? Thanks.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:18 PM)

likely put him 4th or 5th on my official ballot in April when I vote on the Norris... Weber, Chara are the 1-2 debate for me...

Sam B (PA)

do you think Nash will be a Ranger

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:19 PM)

All I can tell you is that the Rangers have huge interest in him... .but are balancing that desire with not wanting to blow up their team to get him

Sergei (Madison, WI)

Of all the possible destinations for Rick Nash, L.A. seems like the perfect fit. If I am Lombardi, I WANT Nash, I mean, my job depends on this deal. If I am Howson, L.A. has what I want, so, here is the deal: Nash to L.A. for Bernier, Johnson, Penner (he may have been a bust this season, but I believe not all is lost) and a 1st round pick. Remember Pierre, you heard it here first. :P Your thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:29 PM)

Sorry guys, had to take a call I couldn't ignore. Sergei, I fully agree with you on Kings and Nash and have been writing that all week. To me Kings have the best assets they're WILLING to offer to Columbus. But here's the other angle on this, does Columbus keep the Kings for Jeff Carter instead? Because LA might be only team willing to take that contract... food for thought...

John (NYC) [via mobile]

I keep hearing how the Rangers are missing a piece, what is it that they're doing that won't convert to success come playoff time?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:31 PM)

The goals might be hard to come by come the playoffs although with King Henrik and the way they play defensively as a team... maybe it's not as big a deal... hard to say until you play the games, as we always say

Sam B (PA)

Do the Rangers make a deal before the Monday?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:32 PM)

Yes

mark mi [via mobile]

Whats going to happen with buffalo do they make the playoffs? if not what trades or players do they unload

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:32 PM)

no playoffs for them this year.Derek Roy very much in play. Keep an eye on him

Jack (DC)

Can you tell the newer Caps fans that the 03-04 season was way worse then this season.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:33 PM)

it was indeed

Rob (NY)

Let's forget Nash for a minute. Wouldn't a better deal for the Rangers be Penner? I know his offense is gone in LA but so has everyone, He could be a nice pick up on this team and really thrive in Torts system. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:33 PM)

Um, have you see Penner play this year? Yikes

david (nj)

with the way the devils have been playing lately, would you consider them contenders? i know they are not a sexy pick like the rangers, flyers, pens or bruins...........also what defender should the devils look at acquiring? they addressed the depth up front, so im thinking kuba or zidlicky........lastly, what do you think about coach deboar? i know elias said he thinks he is the best or one of the best coaches he has ever had and he has had burns, lamaire, robinson

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:34 PM)

as one Eastern Conference GM told me this morning, ''The East is wide open again this year. Get in and you've got a chance."For sure the Devils could have a deep run, no question

Titembe Mbuku (Nigeria)

Mr. Pierre! Greetings! Devils will acquire help on defensive line before deadline, no? Now I submit question and read your response on screen. Thank you.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:35 PM)

Yes Devils trying hard to acquire a d-man and I think they'll succeed

Abby (Buffalo)

How good can Carl Hagelin be? He's come out of nowhere and looks really impressive.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:35 PM)

Love his skates and hockey IQ

lance (texas)

What will Dallas do during the next week? Sell, stand pat, buy, pure hockey trades that will help now and in the future........ I am just excited to have an owner!!!!!!

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:36 PM)

here's my Stars blog from today:http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/14864/stars-ott-ribiero-could-move-by-deadline

Matt (Orlando, FL)

What are more of the smaller names out there that the Rangers can lock down for some secondary scoring help? This way we dont have to give up the future for Nash. Also, whats pumping on the iPod??

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:41 PM)

I know the Rangers had interest in Ray Whitney but that was before the Coyotes went on a tear and now it's very unlikely the Coyotes would move him....Listening to some Neil Young right now !

Dougie (Indiana)

Not much talk about Toronto lately. I really thought that they'd finally climb over the hump and stay locked into the 8 spot, instead of disappointing us.... again.Any chance they stabilize and make the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:42 PM)

they're trying to make a deal for a top-six forward... obviously talked to Columbus about Nash but I think that's a long shot... not much out there...

Tyler (Philly)

Is JVR on the move? What are the Flyers trying to do by moving him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:43 PM)

I think he's available ... Flyers will only move him thought in a solid hockey deal... they're looking to move him for the sake of it

John (New York)

Pierre,I dont think Nash would be a good fit in NY especially if Columbus wants MDZ or McD. What do you think NY will add to help out with scoring especially since Ruutu is off the market.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:43 PM)

Well know this about Ruutu _ if he doesn't re-sign over the next few days, he might be put back on the trade market... he needs to sign

Jason (Vancouver)

Burrows hits 500 games tonight. Seeing as he came from the ECHL, has the 4th most goals over the last 3 years and gets $2mil, best underrated story ever? The original Jeremy Lin?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:44 PM)

Fantastic story, that's for sure. Long journey for Burrows. Great kid

Alex (DC)

Are there any rumors out there about Boston going after Semin or Carter?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:44 PM)

haven't heard that

Chris (DC)

Pierre - biggest reasons why everything has gone sideways for the Caps this year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:45 PM)

1. No. 8 disappointing2. Backstrom concussion3. Green out most of the year; finally back now

Ryan (Winnipeg, MB)

Good afternoon Mr LeBrun - After winning three in a row and the caps and panthers playing the way they are. Are the Jets the favorite to win the southeast division?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:46 PM)

I still think Washington is the favourite, too much talent there... But getting Winnipeg in the playoffs would be fantastic story. How loud can that building get !

Tim (Pa)

Flyers Done Dealing ? If Rick Nash price goes down who will they have to give up ?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:46 PM)

Don't think the Flyers are done

Keith (NYC)

If I am the Rangers I don't trade for Nash. Too much to give up and too big of a cap hit for too long. Don't revert to old ways. Think long term. Can always sign Parise after the season if they so choose.

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:47 PM)

NO question Parise is on the Rangers' radar for July 1 if they stand pat here at deadline... then again. a dozen teams will make offers for Parise, no sure thing

Jason (Vancouver)

I predict the Canucks break the Wings home streak, but will there be a 2nd asterix beside the Canucks for doing it while Datsyuk was out?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:48 PM)

agree, also predict Canucks win at Joe Louis

Christian T (NJ)

With the talk from the NY post about a mysterious investor coming in and helping the Devils can we now put the Devils as the favorite to keep Zach PArise over the summer?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:50 PM)

Most NHL team execs I've spoken with believe Parise will hit the market.... then again, that's what they hope will happen, haha

Drew (Cleveland)

If you had to guess one trade that definitely takes place before the trade deadline what will it be?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:51 PM)

sorry meant to say, I bet Ales Hemsky gets traded

MonsieurHello (Toronto)

Patrick Roy has publicly announced that he is interested in being the next head coach of the Canadiens. If you were the G.M. of the Maple Leafs, Capitals, Sabres, Lightning, or Blue Jackets, would you swoop in before the end of the regular season and make Roy an offer that he could not refuse?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:52 PM)

Doubt Patrick would want to coach in the NHL other than three specific cities:Montreal, Denver or his native Quebec City if they ever get a team

kevin (columbus)

Pierre where do you see Jeff Carter ending up? Staying in Columbus or being traded?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:52 PM)

LA is best best if Kings strike out on Nash...

corey (nyc)

do you think the rangers and blackhawks would do: Erixon, mcilrath, 1st round pick for kane? if not, what would it take for the rangers to get him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:54 PM)

No chance Kane gets deal. Zero chance

Pierre LeBrun
  (3:56 PM)

My TSN colleague is reporting Steve Downie traded from Tampa to Colorado.... have to end this chat to go chase this down ! cheers everyone
