Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. Big weekend of fights. FNF tonight, I'll be calling the Saturday afternoon Epix doubleheader (Povetkin-Huck and Cleverly-Karpency) and a good HBO show tomorrow night with Maidana-Alexander and Broner-Perez, so plenty to discuss. New notebook is up and a feature on Maidana-Alexander and a blog should be up soon on Povetkin-Huck. Plus the Pacquiao-Bradley press tour took place this week. So read it all, check out the sked and let's get to it.

alex (dc)

any info on khan-peterson tickets?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Not announced yet, soon though.

jr (dfw)

I hate to agree with Alexander but he was right. He is a draw in St. Louis, and that is why he gets to have the fights there. If Maidana had the draw he would fight in his hometown.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Maidana has fought in Argentina many times but he comes here (and for this fight to St. Louis) because the money is bigger.

Chisora (Police Station)

HE GLASSED ME, HE GLASSED ME!!

Dustin (Ohio)

Dan..great notebook as always. have you ever been glassed before? haha

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Not yet. :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Not yet. :)

Juan (Riverside)

Hey Dan!!! What do you think of Robert Guerrero Opponent? Is this fight a step up for Guerrero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

To answer the previous question -- not been glassed yet! :) As for Guerrero facing Aydin, definitely a step up considering Aydin is a legit 147 contender, was a good amateur and is very strong. If Guerrero can move up to 147 and beat a legit contender he will have shown he can handle the weight and can be in the mix for a major fight. My only issue has been him thinking he could come off a bad injury and move right up in weight into a major fight. It doesn't work that way unless you are a superstar.

David (NJ)

Marcos MaiDANa - I think tomorrow night's Maidana-Alexander fight has FOY all over it. Two guys with solid chins, in their primes, both in a "must-win" fight to remain top tier fighters. Agree ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I think it could be a good fight but I have a hard time seeing Alexander in a fight of the year. If it is that kind of war, that is not good for Alexander.

Mike (Massapequa )

I've gotten my 10 year old daughter into boxing and this past weekend I actually found my VHS tape of Hagler - Hearns and shared it with her ( and my 14 year old son ) I figure if anyone would appreciate that it would be you

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

That's pretty cool.

Tom (Texas)

Dan, Is EPIX ever going to figure out how to have a solid internet feed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I know they are working on it. The problem, they say, is not always their feed. Often it is the local provider's speed. But they are aware there are issues.

Mike (Chicago)

With Mattyshee-Soto going on 6/23 who could up Peterson-Khan 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Good chance it could be Broner if he wins tomorrow night.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

It was pretty sad that David Haye threw more punches in the brawl with Chisora than the entire fight against Wlad

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Agreed!

Nate (Madison)

It's strange how a British accent can make a guy yelling "I'm going to shoot me David Haye" sound civilized

Mango (Washington DC)

Dan, read the notebook and noticed a possible June 30 card at the Verizon Center with Gary Russell Jr. and Seth Mitchell. Any rumors if another fighter will be part of the televised portion of the show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

All in the works, but I would fully expect Mitchell and Russell in TV fights.

Wade (ATL, GA)

Hey Dan. Gabriel Campillo vs Tavoris Cloud last weekend. How bad was the decision in your eyes? I can't believe judges can take an effort like that by Campillo and see it any other way! Not only did Campillo out work him and land more punches but after the first round in my eyes it appeared that Cloud didn't even belong in the ring with him. Campillo was in his groove! One of the worst decisions I've ever seen!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I agree it was a bad decision. I thought Campillo definitely won. What makes it soooo bad though was the 116-110 card, which just not even close to reality. But I have seen a lot of decisions far worse than that one.

Robby (California)

Do you think no Atlas for Povetkin this weekend has any significance on the outcome of this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I think it could have an impact, especially if Povetkin finds himself in a little trouble and needs those words in the corner. But remember -- there was a language barrier with Teddy that doesn't exist with Zimin for this fight so I think Povetkin will be fine.

Sal Rangel (El Paso, TX)

Dan please tell Schaefer that El Paso has a lot of fight freaks and a HBO or Showtime type of card would do good here. I saw in the Notebook he metioned El Paso but we hardly ever get great fights here. I guess some fights are better than none though. Thanks King Freak!

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

He made the point to say GB will be in El Paso this year with a significant card.

Chris (Boston)

Whats the story with Dmitry Pirog? Heard his fight got pushed back with N'Kam... any update?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I've heard he had an arm injury.

Dereck Chisora (Insane Asylum)

How's your toe Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Good, good. Thanks for asking.

Lou (Detroit)

Why weren't you in Germany instead of Chris Mannix last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Because I was in the NY studio calling the fight with Bruce and Freddie while Chris was ringside to do interviews. Same setup tomorrow and next week for Wlad Klitschko's fight.

Mike (Chicago)

Does Andre Ward have a tentative return date?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Not yet.

Aaron (Hartford)

Nice to see Martinez is finally getting some air time with HBO on Ring Life.... he is an interesting guy and this can only help him with more US exposure...

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Could not agree more.

KK (GR)

Is Peter Quillen still fighting on the Mayweather undercard? This guy is good and needs the exposure.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Possibly. Nothing is done yet.

MacDaddy (Philly)

Dan, will all of the glassing that occurred last weekend, will future press conferences feature only plastic??

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Stephen (Kansas)

D$, there is nothing like chatting boxing on a bus going to St. Louis for a big fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Nice, have a great time.

Keith (Philly)

Yo Dan.. have you seen that story about Mayweather's gag order demand for HBO? Is there any truth to it??

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I have seen it. I spoke with HBO's spokesperson this morning and they deny it is true. And I quote the HBO spokesperson, "Completely false." That is HBO's official response. That said I am not sure I believe it 100 percent and it is not out of the question that the PR person is out of the loop so he has cover.

Berndawg (CHI)

STL.--Crap airport, but the home of the GOT's start on Twitter :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Yes! My first day on Twitter (@danrafaelespn) was the day of the Alexander-Kotelnik fight. Was in my hotel room, weather was bad, was a little bored, started my account.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

By the way -- here is the link to today's notebook: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7609606/boxing-victor-ortiz-andre-berto-ii-upcoming-golden-boy-fights

Tommy (Dallas, Tx)

Dan,is there a HBO 24/7 for Mayweather/Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes, there will be.

Ishmael (STL)

Do you think Devon Alexander would benefit from a more aggressive-minded trainer? Cunningham's style seems to be very passive.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I don't agree with that AT ALL.

jr (dfw)

Did I read your notebook correct. There is a possible Winky sighting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Yup. I spoke to Winky yesterday. He accepted the Quillin fight he said. The Nevada commission did not want to approve it because Winky is 40 and been off for a few years. There's a chance Winky may take a smaller fight or two in his hometown of Tampa to get back in action, possibly in mid-May on Telefutura.

joe (n.h)

what was your impression of Paul Williams last week.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Good enough to beat a C-fighter. Won't ever be back in the top 5 p4p but nearly as shot as some folks make him out to be. Still a good fighter.

Alex (Concord, NH)

Whats your take on Hershman's stance on the Heavyweight's being banned on HBO? I find it pathetic that the 147 which is dominated by two guys whom don't fight each other is highlighted but Heavyweights are canned and they fight nearly everyone!

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Hershman has not "banned" heavyweights. He'll have Seth Mitchell on in April. Ken, like any one, will likely put on a heavyweight fight if it is something interesting that makes sense and comes for the right price. But heavyweights are not "banned" -- that is ridiculous.

sally (ny)

was showtime really not interested in pascal sillakh? hard to believe

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Showtime, from what I was told, had some interest in the fight but it's all about getting it for the right price.

Phil (Philly)

Mr. Rafael, greetings! How does Texas allow fighters to come into fights up to 20 pounds over the weight limit. I saw that on a FNF last week. Someone is gonna get killed out there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

It was 15 pound spread, which is legal in their rules for guys in those weight divisions. So they followed their rules. Should the rule be changed? Perhaps.

matt (canada)

pretty good that vitali beat chisora 8 rounds to 2 with 1 arm. I dont think anybody else could have done that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It was 10-2 with one arm. It was a 12-round fight. It was pretty impressive. Vitali hasn't gotten enough credit for winning fairly easily with one arm.

Jeff (Gilbert AZ)

Big D,Just want to give Devon Alexander respect for continuing to fight top caliber opponents....he's not going to win all of them but the fact he's fighting the best is great. Would love to see him fight the Ghost next.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I do give Devon a lot of respect. Since I've known the kid he has always just wanted to fight the best opponents and he is doing that.

Paul (Philly)

Did Manny really go postal on Ariza the night before the Marquez III fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Yes, according to the conversation between Koncz and Freddie in the final scene of last week's On Freddie Roach. By the way -- the final episode is on tonight on HBO.

Jesus Gonzalez (Montreal)

Did my fight with Adonis Stevenson start yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

It's over. And it was quick and violent.

Victor Samora (Salt Lake City, Utah)

Your official picks for the weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I like Povetkin over Huck in a competitive fight. I like Cleverly over Karpency by a knockout. I like Broner to outpoint Perez and I think Maidana stops Alexander.

Greg (NYC)

Is Seth Mitchell-Chazz Witherspoon a go for April 28

Brian E Davis (Chicago)

Do you sense what some people can see as an upset in the Pacquiao-Bradley fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Absolutely. I give Bradley a helluva shot.

Justin (Seattle)

DTM, who will brush your hair this weekend before the Epix telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

We have a very nice makeup woman who takes good care of the announcers. I'll see what she can do.

Jackson (IA)

Money May turns 35! With him getting so far up there in age...are we looking at the first time a fighter ever calls himself out for a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!! In all seriousness, today is Mayweather's 35th birthday, so happy birthday to him!

Tomasz (Chi)

What do you think of Dana White's rant on Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Dana being Dana.

joe (n.h)

Sergio's fight against Macklin might be his toughest yet. I watched a couple of Macklins fight on you tube and he seems to have some good tools. Who wins in your book?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Of course Sergio is the favorite and should be, but I love Macklin's pressure and chin and desire. And his skills are solid too. I give him a chance but he will probably need to fight the perfect fight to win.

Nick (Raleigh)

Anything new with R. Marquez??

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Nothing that I am aware of.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, any idea what happened between cris arreola and don king last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I was told that King used a pretty derogatory word to describe Mexicans at the press conference the week of the fight and Arreola was pretty ticked off by it.

Besim (Staten Island)

Will you miss the HBO fights tomorrow night like you did last week because of your commute home from your EPIX duties?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Yes, but I will have it on the DVR to watch when I get home and probably will get updates while I am on the train.

Nick (Raleigh)

Can I get a Kelly Pavlik update? is he training yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Kelly has been with Robert Garcia training in Oxnard for the past few weeks.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

Heading to Maidana-Alexander tomorrow Dan! Sooooo excited for my first live event ever... You know of any good boxing bars or anything like that in the Lou?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I dont but I hope you have a great time. Nothing like the live atmosphere.

KK (GR)

Taker-HHH, Hell in the Cell!!!! Can't wait.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I know!! I love it!! The Streak will continue!!

Peter (Philadelphia)

Is Mike Jones-Randall Bailey confirmed for the Pacquiao-Bradley undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

No. Carl Moretti said it may wind up on a Showtime card along with a Rigondeaux fight.

Joel Julio (Florida)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH What's new with me?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Main Events says it is working on something but does not want to give any details until it is done. So we'll see.

Silva (San Diego)

Hey Dan for fun, Prime Mosley vs prime Trinidad who wins and how?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Mosley all day. Too fast, too elusive, too good a chin, good puncher. That was a fight so many of us wanted to see circa 2000/2001. But Tito moved up and then went into the middleweight tournament. It was talked about but never happened. I would have loved it.

willie (detroit)

What are your thoughts on Jonathan Banks and what's next for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

We rehersed last week's Epix show calling the first 7 rounds of his fight on the Klitschko-Chisora undercard. He is one of the most boring fighters I have ever witnessed. Just absolute agony. Has a sparring partner mentality too I think. He was also gassed after about 4 rounds with Firtha, who is a journeyman. I dont think he's going anywhere as a heavyweight.

Steve (NYC)

If NBC Sports and Epix are pleased with being in the heavyweight business, why does HBO and Showtime by and large shun them?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I have no idea. That's their call. I'm happy Epix is picking up the heavyweight fights it is. And if NBC Sports Net puts on some solid heavyweights -- like they did recently -- great.

Jeff (Greensboro)

Although it was a mostly dominant performance, I found Vitali-Chisora highly entertaining.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I agree. One of the better heavyweight title fights in a long time.

Rick (Miami)

Dan, maybe a dumb question, but why don't you just drive to New York instead of via train? Seems you'd get home earlier.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

No chance. MUCH easier to take the train. And it's relaxing and I can work on the train or take a nap or read the paper.

Don F (Sunny San Diego)

D$, so is Pascal gonna fight Ismail Syllakh in May. Or what?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Unlikely.

John (PHX)

Easy work for Vargas tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Very.

Gerry (NJ)

Dan, what kind of set-up do you have when calling the fights FOR EPIX? Are you watching it on a '90 HDTV kinda deal or what?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

We have a giant screen tv moved in front of our broadcasting table and we put on our headsets and do it like that. We have a great view and we also get into it because we hear the crowd noise as well. It's a good setup.

chris k (chantilly, va)

did you get any Giants memorabilia when you were in NY?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I was disappointed in the selection to be honest but I got some stuff.

Joey (Charleston, SC)

At this point, do you think Chisora is approaching Ibeabuchi in the crazy department?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

LOL. I dont think he's there just yet. Ike was a nutjob.

Jeremiah (San Diego)

Can you tell Espinoza that us west coast freaks want to see the fights live? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I'll let him know.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Tweet of the Week: "Manny and Timmy on their best behavior. Nobody got glassed!"

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

True right?

jon (san bernardino)

Dan, so is JMM really going to fight cesar cuenca...I have seen some sites that have said that, thought you would really know...btw for those that dont know cuenca is 42-0 with 1 ko

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

That fight is very possible although it is not done yet as far as I am told.

Greg (Columbus Ohio)

when "the problem" wins tomorrow, do you see him staying at that weight and cleaning out the division or do you see him taking his hairbrush up in weight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I dont know for sure but I would think Adrien stays at 130 for a couple of more fights and then moves up to 135, where there are better opponents and bigger money. If he stays at 130 there are not a lot of top opponents. He might need some of the taleneted guys at 126 to come up.

Dominique (Quebec)

My boss just caught me participating in the chat and told me to "Get back toe work". When I didn't listen toe her she glassed me causing a huge cut on my forehead. Despite my injury I am still participating in the chat. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Yes, you toe-tally are a Freaks.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - I am not that familiar with Eloy Perez, though I hear he is solid. What can you tell me about him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Good boxer, not a lot of power, but very solid fighter. He's been on Telefutura a few times, so if you watch Solo Boxeo you have seen him.

Joe (NYC)

Since Andy Lee got screwed out of fighting Felix Sturm, why not match him and Kid Chocolate on the May 5th undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

They tried to make Lee vs Quillin for March 17 HBO undercard. Not enough money to satisfy everyone.

Frank (PHX)

so there is 4 episodes of 24/7 for Pac/Bradly not 3?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Correct. HBO sent out a press release announcing the series that was wrong and later corrected.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Malignaggi fighting Senchenko on a Sunday? What's up with that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

That is what they are doing in Ukraine. It's unusual but not unheard of there.

@Vicmatic_TKO (north jersey)

are we gonna have a better stream for epix?..since they got into the game, their streams have been crap

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I hope they get it worked out but I just call the fights. That isn't my department.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Did Andre Ward drop the WBC belt? I've seen conflicting information

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Absolutely not and Andre tweeted himself the other day not to believe that bogus rumor.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Here's my new blog today: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/795/huck-aims-for-piece-of-heavyweight-history

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Here's my new blog today: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/795/huck-aims-for-piece-of-heavyweight-history

Steve (KC)

How much do those integrated sports PPV's run? I want to see Paulie's fight, but I am not paying 50 bucks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Not nearly that much. They are usually priced anywhere from $25 to $40 depending on the promoter.

Ryan (Ohio)

hopefully noone will get glassed this weekend

Craig (MD)

Do you like Huck's chances this weekend, I have a feeling he pulls it off

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I give him a good shot but I still think Povetkin wins.

Jim (PA)

Povetkin is not a real champion.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I know. And so does he.

Zab Judah (The Bathroom)

THE SHOWER DOOR GLASSED ME! IT GLASSED ME!!!

Julian (Kansas)

Will CNN be doing any replays of Pacman/Bradley 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Not sure at this point.

Dennis (Little Ferry, NJ)

I thought i read it somewhere that the Cleverly-Karpency will be in the EPIX broadcast too tomorrow? Is that correct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Yes, it will be live on Epix following Povetkin-Huck.

Greg (Columbus Ohio)

Danimal, anything in the works for Pac vs bradley undercard

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Alvarado-Herrera will be on there. The other two TV undercard fights are TBA. Maybe Bailey-Mike Jones.

Dan (London)

Klitschko was awful last week. He needs to call it a day while he can still get points victories. Do you think he'll retire before someone beats him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

He was awful? He beat a guy with one hand. You're crazy. No I dont think he needs to retire.

Thomas (LA)

Why would Showtime buy Morel/Mares?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

They like Mares. But Morel not a good opponent.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, mark my words, On Freddie Roach will win an Emmy award. Freddie is a great ambassador for the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Good chance, I agree. Really good show.

Sam (NO)

Wasn't Al Bernstein glassed last time in Puerto Rico, or was he "plastic-ed".

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Carnell (DC)

Does Jermaine Taylor get a title shot by the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Anything is possible in this crazy sport.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

If Maidana gets past Devon, and Matthysse gets past Soto, let's match up this Argentine guys already. Guaranteed fireworks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

You are a regular Freak and you know I love that fight.

Mike (St. Paul)

Scored my Pacquiao/Bradley tix! Vegas, here I come!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Cool!

Zab's Shower Door (Vegas)

Let's be clear, I was glassing fighters long before David Haye.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

GLASS! GLASS! GLASS! GLASS!

Daniel (SF)

Dan, what is the schedule for the EPIX broadcast tomorrow? 2pm PT/5p ET start? Which fight is broadcast first - Povetkin or Cleverly?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Telecast starts at 4 pm ET. Povetkin-Huck is first. Then after that fight it's live to Wales for Cleverly's fight.

larry merchant (hbo)

If I was 50 years younger I'd break your glass!

Anthony (san diego)

Whats next for donaire now that Arce is rumored to be out of the picture?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Arce is not out of the picture. It is that the fight with Donaire probably waits until HBO in September. Donaire likely will fight another opponent this summer, probably July. Arce also might take another fight as well.

Chris (Sylmar)

Fight Freak's Manifesto: We are freaks. We sit through the bad decsions. We put up with luke-warms matchups. We even get up early on Saturday, just to watch TiVo of fights like Kirkland-Angulo...because that one bout is so worth it. We are freaks after all...

Julio (Santa Fe, NM)

What is next for Jorge Linares?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Good question. I think he will take a fight this spring/summer and then have a rematch with DeMarco in the fall, which is mandated.

Uriah (SLC, UT)

Who wins? Glass vs Toe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Glass.

crispanic (dc)

how is your furnace Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Brand new one. All good. Thanks for asking.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Reminder to the Freaks..... 2 Days: Portrait of a Fighter - James Kirkland is showing tomorrow night, 15 minutes before the broadcast. Will feature the two days before his upset win over Angulo. Can't wait.

JB (Toronto) [via mobile]

What happened to Shawn Porter? He looked promising and has disappeared completely.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I think is inactivity is because he is in a lawsuit with Prize Fight, his promoter (or former promoter, however you want to look at it).

AL M (NYC)

Is the Epix fight going to play in times square?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Chris (Rotterdam Jct, NY)

Worst decision: Campillo/Cloud or Helinius/Chisora? Both pretty bad in my opinion!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Having some tech issues. Yes, Epix will be on Times Square on Saturday. As for the worse decision -- Helenius-Chisora was worse to me. But both were bad.

J (ATL)

How good do you think Hank Lundy is? Legit top10 lightweight?

Benicio (Los Angeles)

What do you think about Brian Viloria vs Omar Nino III?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Good revenge match. Good Filipino-Mexican rivalry fight. I was at their first fight and Viloria was awful, barely threw any punches and clearly lost. I was also at their second fight, which was a lot closer. But it was a no decision because Nino flunked the drug test.

slink (IE)

Ok in all seriousness, Haye vs Chisora, who wins? Id say Chisora.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I think Chisora has way more heart than Toe and would win.

Ryan (Michigan)

Who would you like to see Paul Williams up against next? In time can he return to the top at 154 against Canelo or JCC Jr or Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

154 is a good division. Put Williams in with any of the top guys, Kirkland-Molina winner, rematch with Lara, Austin Trout, Martirosyan, Canelo, you name it and I'm happy to watch it.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

How much did you laugh when Chisora started screaming "How's your toe David?" over and over again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I laughed a lot.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Would it be fair to say the Haye has a glass toe?

Ron McKenzie (Cincinnati)

I've been getting the feeling the PacMan wants to leave boxing more than ever and a classy loss, or at least a loss to a classy fighter might seem the right way to bow out to him. I believe if he loses to Bradley, he retires and quickly disappears (all of his choosing).

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Your theory is not unreasonable. I don't personally see it that way but it is certainly possible. Keep in mind, Pacquiao does have a rematch clause.

Bob (VA)

Who is training Povetkin, and is Atlas completely through with him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Alexander Zimin is training him. He was also the trainer for Valuev. Where Teddy and Povetkin stand in the future, I do not know.

Bk Don (Brooklyn)

Where does Tavoris cloud go from here? Is there any chance you see the IBF ordering a rematch w/campillo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I think it's possible that the IBF will order a rematch. Cloud's next move is up in the air until a decision is made by the IBF on what it wants to do.

TC (DC)

Any news on Delvin Rodriguez? Seems like he is the odd man out at 154.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

There have been some talks about him vs Austin Trout.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Pacquiao ain't retiring. He can't afford to. Buboy now had 10 assistants. Enough said.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

LOL.

Fabian (San Francisco)

What match has you more excited.....Rios vs Gamboa or Ortiz vs Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Wow, tough call. I guess if I had to pick one I would say Rios-Gamboa only because I have at least seen Ortiz-Berto 1 and Rios-Gamboa is a new fight. But both are really great matchups to me.

Justin (Seattle)

"How's your toe David," might be the quote of the year.

John (El paso, TX.)

Dan, Thought you did a good job commentating for EPIX last week. I was interested in how adamant you were when you said Vitali is an ATG at heavyweight. Where do you rank him and his brother numericaly on the ATG list?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I do think they are but where they fall in the end I wouldnt say until they are officially retired and you can fully critique their careers.

Steven (Evansville, IN)

On my way to St. Louis tomorrow! Any idea if Michael Buffer will be doing his thing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Not sure. It's possible he will be doing the card in Germany.

E (Miami)

"Dereck showed heart against Vitali........you (Davis Haye) showed your toe!"

hood (new york)

bigger robbery campillo vs cloud or lara vs williams

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Lara-Williams.

Harold Lederman (HBO)

In case a cut is caused by intentional glassing, we go to the scorecards after 4 rounds have been completed

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

LOL!!

Anthony (san diego)

D$...if another Fight Night video game was made ..and they asked you to be a part of it..using ur likeness and voice....would you do it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Of course. How cool would that be?

Greg (Columbus Ohio)

D$ whats your thought on why PWILL wont change his style? I think Emanuel Steward would change him completely around and make him fight using his height and reach advantage... just doesnt make sense to giving his best advantages away

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

For years the rap on Williams was that he doesn't use his height and reach to his advantage. At this stage of his career, he is what he is and I dont think he's going to change. Doesn't seem very interested in changing either.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - Anything in the works for Jhonny Gonzalez? Seems like he's being left out at feather.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

He's supposed to fight a mandatory with Elio Rojas but I am not aware of a specific date. I've heard April sometime.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

You just said Alvarado-Herrera would be on the Pac-Bradley undercard but in the notebook it says Rios-Gamboa undercard, which is it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

You're right, my bad. Alvarado-Herrera will be on the Rios-Gamboa card not the PPV. I goofed.

Mark (PA)

Would you say that your fave fighters are: The Klitschkos, Matthew Macklin, Joel Julio and Devon Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

No I wouldnt say that at all.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Who do you consider the best set of brothers to have boxed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Probably the Klitschkos and Marquezes.

Ryan (OH)

Dan, great FNF main event tonight. Will this be the first time in history that an incredibly magnificent WBC Silver belt will be defended live on ESPN2?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Dont know and dont care, but the fight itself is a solod fight between Cruz and Burgos.

Steve (Topeka, Kansas)

Who wins? The Undertaker vs Vitali Klitchko?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Are Tombstones allowed?

Trips (NYC)

Hi Dan, I will be going to the Martinez fight at MSG. Just wondering how the setup is at The Theater since I'll be in the 300's. Also if it is not sold out, is there an opportunity to move up to an empty seat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Not sure what security is like but pretty much any seat in the Theater is a good seat.

Ryan (OH)

Haha agree 100%, great fight. Of course the Silver belt is as big of a joke as the sanctioning body that created it . . .

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Created by the wretched WBC. #wbcisdisgusting

kel (nyc)

hey dan which tickets will be cheaper for me to buy off stub hub-manny/bradley-mayweather.cotto

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

How would I know? Why not just check?

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

If you attend Martinez-Martinez, you will be on a train to NYC 4 times in 5 weeks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I will attend that fight and, yes, it means trips to New York 4 out of 5 weeks.

Ryan (OH)

By the way, who do you like in tonight's main event?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I like Burgos over Cruz.

Paul (Carlsbad)

Whatever to Kotelnik?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Just never fought again after the Alexander fight. But that was only in August 2010 so it's not been THAT long.

Dave (Saint Louis)

How do you see the future of Deontay Wilder playing out. Oscar was on local radio here in St. Louis yesterday saying he would challenge the Klits in the next year. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

He is nowhere near ready for a Klitschko. He needs to fight a couple of quality opponents at least first. I like Wilder. He has huge power and from what I am told a great work ethic. But he has fought nobody with a pulse yet.

matt (canada)

anything in works for new free agent k9 bundrage?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Don King would say otherwise that Bundrage is a free agent.

ed (butler p.a)

dan are you goig to call alot more fights on epix?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

If they have more fights, I will call them.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

No question that the Quiet Car on the Acela is the best way to travel

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Dude you are so right.

Steve (KC)

What's next for Alexander if he wins tomorrow? Berto-Ortiz II winner?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

He'll have options. Could be Ortiz-Berto winner. Could be Malignaggi if he beats Senchenko. Could be a Guerrero-Aydin winner. Could be any of the guys and Golden Boy has several in the division.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Any idea who Vargas may fight on the Mayweather undercard if he wins tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

TBA.

omar (long island)

Dan, I will give $5 (cash) to post my comment

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Consider this a freebie.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

I for one would like to see Maidana-Ortiz II if they both win their next fights, hell I'd watch it even if they both lost.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

That would be superb. Agree.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

I thought that, being as generous within reason as possible to Cloud, the best you could score that fight for him was a draw

Candyce (Seattle, WA)

What is the scoop on all this talk about The Ghost vs Selcuk Aydin?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

They made the fight. I have some stuff in today's notebook about it. Good test for Guerrero at welter.

David (Atlanta)

WBC has been persistent on twitter about vacating MW title if no Chavez-Sergio next. Do you believe them this time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

No, they lie.

Ken (OH)

What's next for Durlome? More Shobox?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Whether it's ShoBox or ESPN or wherever, just want to see the kid back on TV soooooon!

Bree (LA)

Any news on Fernando Guerrero? Is he being mentioned for the DC card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Yes, Richard Schaefer said he would also probably be on the card, although don't think he'd necessarily be on the TV portion. But if the card goes to Showtime I would imagine he'd be on the Showtime Extreme part of the telecast.

Mike (NC)

Battering Dan- Have you done away with the "Weekly Random Thoughts"? Or have they slipped through the cracks as I look through the boxing page? Need More!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I still do it, but it's not ever been 100 percent weekly.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I still do it, but it's not ever been 100 percent weekly.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I still do it, but it's not ever been 100 percent weekly. You'll see them.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting. We have a great weekend of fights, so hope you all enjoy the ESPN2, Epix and HBO shows! Check out all of our coverage and we'll do it again next week. Peace.
