Ok, let's get rolling
Please explain the scholarship offer process. I'm trying to understand why OU hasn't offered some pretty obvious targets, like Justin Manning. What is the thought process regarding offers? Is there a concern that too many recruits could commit? Is OU "locked in" if they offer a recruit? Boomer Sooner!
That's correct. Once you offer someone, you're locked in, unless you want to build a rep as somebody that doesn't hold to scholarship offers.
Hey Jake, you going to pick up a copy of NCAA Football 13 this year?
The only game system I have is a Playstation2, and I don't think they make games for it anymore. So, no.
How worried should the Sooners be about the lack of commitments so far from players offered a scholarship?
I'm not too worried about it. OU only had a couple of guys committed by this time last year. Not the end of the world.
How is Trey Metoyer handling college so far?
Haven't heard anything to be concerned about thus far.
How much do we need to read into the possible violations by Norvell? Has he admitted to it being him or was his account hacked?
OU hasn't admitted to anything, but we have to assume it was a violation. if his account was hacked, OU would have come out and said something already. Honestly, the blunder was more embarrassing than damaging. OU will self-report the secondary violations and move on. No big deal.
How will fans remember me if I don't win a NC or Heisman? But I win another 10+ games, go 3-1 against Texas, and give Bob a winning bowl record by going a PERFECT 4-0 in the postseason?
Good question. The majority of fans will remember you as one of the better QBs to come through Norman. The fringes will just lament that you weren't Sam Bradford.
my first question is how do you see bedlam turning out if OSU didn't have Blackmon or Randall? and my second is who will be the next go to guy at OU?
OSU would have won only 31-10 instead. Stills has to be the next go-to guy. He's in line for it.
Travis Lewis was slooooooow today. Surprised?
Can't say I am.
I see a lot of linebackers and defensive ends offered but when are they really going to go after some defensive tackles?
Probably once they find some worth going after. DT is the hardest position to recruit in college football, even harder than QB. Promising DT recruits are few and far between, and everybody is desperate for them.
in your opinion? what person on the defensive side of the ball will we see will sign with ou in 2013? oh yeah do you have any up date on travis lewis? i think he pulled a hammy?
I haven't heard anything on Travis. OU is going to sign a bunch of guys on defense.
With the good results of James Hanna and Donald Stephenson last weekend in the combine it makes me beg the question why they were not more productive at OU? Then it makes me worry that we are turning into Texas in that we get a lot of very good talent and do very little with it commensurate to the talent. I don't want OU to be champions in February like Texas. I want them to be champions in January.
What about Jamell Fleming and Ronnell Lewis. OU really developed both of those guys. Not every one pans out, but OU has been solid at developing its players over the year, on average much better than Texas. Think about all the players OU has signed over the years, that Texas didn't want, who have become stars. This space is too short to list them.
I may not be Sam Bradford, but at least I can win a bowl game. I am going to finish with 4 and cement my legacy. Mark my words.
Depends on the bowl game, too. Another win in the Insight Bowl won't get anyone fired up.
Agree or Disgree? Ronnell Lewis could unstoppable in the NFL as a 3-4 OLB, but struggle as 4-3 defensive end.
He's definitely a better fit as a 3-4 OLB.
It seems that OU?s national recruiting strategy is being shaped in part by their inability to recruit some of the top players in the state of Texas. By the time the longhorns are done recruiting, many of the players that are left do not meet OU?s standards. Hence, they are forced to look for players in other areas. The last time that OU beat Texas in a head to head recruiting battle was back in 09 (Jamarkus McFarland). The slow start to recruiting is beginning to get me little concern. How are things shaping up for March 3?
I think the strategy is more about countering the increased competition in Texas recruiting, than losing one-on-one battles to Texas. UT has always gotten its pick of the litter. But these days you have so many schools recruiting the state, it's become very difficult. Recruiting national is a way OU has hedged its bets.
Just to piggyback on the talent question. I think OU has struggled developing secondar players since Stoops left, but done well at other positions? Would you agree with that?
Disagree. Aaron Colvin, Tony Jefferson, Jamelll Fleming, Demontre Hurst. None of those were 5-star guys.
I will give you Flemming. "The Hammer" was more lore than actual production at OU...
Not this past season. Lewis was terrific until he got hurt.
If you had to guess, who will be matched up against Devonte Neal when the Irish visit Norman, Kenny Stills or Demonte Hurst?
Neal would have to win a starting job first.
Should Sooner fans worry that Texas has 10 commitments from the 2013 class and the Sooners have none. And who do you see OU picking up after their junior day
Texas always has more early commitments than OU. This is nothing new.
Do you think Landry Jones is a first round pick in 2013?
Yes. He probably would have been this year, despite a poor end to the season.
I ve been looking at video highlights of all the running backs OU has offered so far. They all look fantastic . I think I like Ty Isaac the best , not only for his speed and moves but the sheer joy he seems to run with so I'm wondering about him. I also really a kind of big blue collar type kid much closer to "home" Darius Graham , who has not been offered yet . Perhaps he looks a little to much like Jermie Calhoun although I don't remember J.C. having as good of moves as Darius . So what are the chances for either of these guys and OU ?
It will be interesting to see how many Rbs OU signs in this class. They already have Whaley, Finch, Clay, D-Will, Smith, Ross... am I forgetting anyone?
Is Ronnell Lewis a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB?
Athritis killin me
Sorry to hear that considering you're only 2 years younger than me.
Why do so many guys sign with texas to never be heard of again? Do you think def recruits will more likely sign if the defense has a great year? Does a really mean anything if a recruit verbally commits this year...before their senior season..?
Texas' talent problem stems largely from this very thing. The Horns fill out their entire class without even seeing how these kids develop as seniors. The margin for error widens. That's why it's risky to take in so many early verbals.
So a half a season makes Lewis a great Sooner? Honestly Lewis is was there and gone so fast I am not sure he got his stuff in his locker at the switzer center...Big hitter, great story average Sooner..
Lewis is not Lee Roy Selmon or Rod Shoate. All I'm saying is that he had a very good junior season.
What kind of DT are we looking for? The big run stopper or the quick QB pressure type?
OU has always coveted speed and quickness in its DTs.
I have a feeling Fleming and Ronnell Lewis will end up having productive careers in the NFL, throughout their tenure at OU they just seem to have that drive to want to get better and prove themselves.
They're both very solid pro prospects. I have a similar feeling.
Is Danzel Williams from Arlington,Texas still in a sooners uniform and if so is he still considered a running back
Yes and Yes. Curious to see what he can do. He's been a forgotten man.
How realistic is my shot of landing top talent in Ohio against Urban Myer and tOSU? I don't think I will have a problem in AZ. But Urban is a good recruiter.
About as good a chance as Meyer has walking into Oklahoma and swiping the top talent here.
Did Lewis ever really lock down to one position?? By the time the coaches knew what to do with him he was gone...
He started every game he was healthy this year at DE. I'd call that locking a position down.
True, but given Floyd's departure and Greenberry switching at the last minute, I think Kelly will get him on the field early, to provide some explosives that the team lacks. It was one of the reasons his "parents" pushed him toward the Irish similar to Kiel from what's been rumored.
Don't disagree. If that's the case, he'll be guarding more than one guy.
Kris- you better back off man. I led the special teams in tackles the two years before I became DE. Don't make me lay the hammer down.
Kris, this is when you run and hide.
I have had the same barber since I was 6
It always helps once you find a barber you can trust.
What is the LB dept chart?
Wort and Nelson at MLB and WLB, with Jaydan Bird backing up Wort. Kellen Jones can back up either. Then you have a bunch of other guys like Frank Shannon, Rashod Favors, PL Lindley, Aaron Franklin fighting for time.
Out of the potential losses OU could have, would you give WVU the highest percentage?
Without a doubt. At best, that's a toss-up game.
So your saying the two LB's I offered in Ohio are not realistic options? I have background in Ohio and one is from the same high school the Stoops graduated from.
Not a comment on any particular player. But do you really believe Meyer is going to come down here and pluck DJ Ward out of Oklahoma? Same thinking.
I love Ronnel.. As a Sooner fan, however, I think we missed a bunch of his potential. In other words I don't believe the coaches developed him very well at all. His next coach will and he will be the stud we all wanted to see here consistently at OU..
I agree that just as Ronnell was coming into his own, he's split for the NFL. Ronnell could have been an All-American by coming back next season.
Texas is once again destroying OU at recruiting players in the state of Texas. In fact, the gap seems to have widened. Some people claim that kids from Texas just grow up wanting to play for Texas. In my opinion, this rationale does not explicate why OU is getting out recruited. After all, it wasn?t that long ago that OU was going head to head against Texas at recruiting Texas? players. OU was doing a better job back in 2008 than they are doing now. This is very strange especially when you consider that Texas is 8-5 and 5-7 the last two seasons.
Texas will always recruit the state of Texas better than Oklahoma, for the reason you pointed out. Doesn't mean OU can't get great players there. But UT will win more battles than it loses, with anyone.
Shouldn't we go to the traditional 4-3 instead of the 4-2-5? I always felt the D was better in that formation.
4-2-5 more effectively combats the spread, which is rampant in the Big 12. Why go to a defense that is better suited to stopping an offense (pro set) that nobody runs anymore?
Do you think I will have a better shot at beating you guys next year, or do you see me leaving with stains in my pants again?
Better shot, yes. Good shot, no.
Do you think Venables gets a head coaching job soon?
I do. That was 90 percent of his reasoning for leaving for Clemson. If he has a good couple of years, you could see him finally take over his own program.
What OU QB is Max Browne most like? What is the realistic shot I have at getting him to Norman?
You would know better than I.
Are the transfers and alleged negativity by some surrounding the program impacting OU's recruiting early?
I'm not really sure what it is. I wondered how OU's disappointing Insight Bowl season might affect 2013 recruiting, but then the Sooners closed extremely well on their 2012 class.
Why do we recruite so far out of the state of oklahoma and invite all these recruites that we know cant travel all the way down to norman, just to get rejected on junior day?
Casting a wide net. But I wish, too, that OU would be more aggressive in recruiting its own in-state kids.
Trotter I think you are missing the point of everyone's concern. The fact is we are getting destroyed head to head with Texas this more so than I can ever remember. We have dominated Texas in NFL talent over the last 5 years in positions like WR, OL, QB, etc. The fact Texas is grabbing top-notch Texas talent who are not even giving OU a look. Why would a WR commit to Texas right now OU without even seriously considering OU? Have OU coaches just simply conceded our efforts in Texas for Ohio, Cali, and AZ? Even more worrisome is that every Cali recruit we are after has been offered by USC as well and lets face it, gonna be pretty hard to beat them head to head as well.
I don't believe OU has conceded its efforts in Texas. But OU is trying to open up other pipelines in order to be more diversified in its recruiting. Recruiting the state of Texas is harder than ever, and if you throw all your eggs in that basket, and come up empty, you're screwed. No doubt, UT is having a really good year. But UT always has a Top 5 recruiting class.
How likely is it that Venables is the head coach at Clemson before next season is over? He is more qualified than Dabo (?) anyway
Dabo is not getting fired. I mean Clemson won the ACC and went to the Orange Bowl last season. It's more likely Dabo gets job elsewhere and that Venables succeeds him.
I swear, as Sooner fans we're so spoiled. I see all these comments and questions about how this player could have been better and Texas is owning us in recruiting..seriously? Last time I checked we're on a 2-0 roll against Texas and their "amazing" recruits and unless OU grabs their neck and pulls it looks like we'll beat them again. Jeez, I'm happy when OU wins 10+ games and everything stays healthy, I know there's that want for some consistency to win the "big ones" but come on, everyone needs to come back down to Earth.
Been hearing a lot of talk about Justin Manning at the DT spot. Are the Sooners making a strong push at Darius James as well?
Yes to both.
I agree with Ryan. Oklahoma has been putting a lot of talent in the NFL lately. Do you think could continue with the kids coming up now? I like Ross alot and think he is going to be dominate.
I love Ross. I think he could be really special. OU just signed several players with NFL potential. The cupboard is far from bare.
why do we continue to see recruits and players having academic problems? is this because of the players we recruit or something else?
OU has had a bigger problem with kids committing to class than with kids having academic problems. The former can be fixed a lot easier than the latter.
I meant kids from Oklahoma High Schools. I know OU will put kids in the NFL. How do you think our state kids will keep up the rising tradition of being stars and making into the 1st round of the NFL?
I think well. Look at some of the recent in-state NFL players. Curtis Lofton, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Jermaine Gresham, Ryan Broyles. That tradition will continue.
Guys, that's all the time we have this week. Thanks for joining me on the chat. We'll do it again next week, same time, same place. Have a great week.
