Tim MacMahon
  (2:58 PM)

Deron Williams is in Dallas ... and might be back to stay this summer. Lamar Odom is in Los Angeles ... and who knows when he'll return? Nine games in 12 nights coming up. Lots of Mavs topics to talk about. Fire away.

Matt (Dallas)

Tim,Does Dallas have a legit shot to get howard and williams? I hear ESPN talk about Howard being a laker, Net, or staying in Orlando. People like Stephen A and Skip didnt even mention Dallas. Yet NBA executives are saying it will happen. Are we just dreaming or does Dallas have a great chance?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:02 PM)

It's legit, depending on what happens before the trade deadline. If the Nets get Dwight Howard, forget about the Mavs' Plans A, B and C. The Mavs' chance is all based on those guys hitting the open market in free agency.

Ryan Barrett (Dallas)

Tim - have you spoken to Mark Cuban since you wrote in your blog about the Mavs looking to trade Beaubois? Do you still believe they are?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:04 PM)

Yes, I have spoken to Cuban since then. He shot down any speculation about the Mavs shopping Roddy B, basically saying that he suspects the Hornets floated that rumor because they've wanted him for a while. To be clear, I blogged about an item from Chris Broussard that reported the Mavs could be close to giving up on Roddy B, if not before the deadline then this summer. If I had to make a prediction, it'd be that they deal him in a salary dump this summer to create more cap space.

Jimmy (LR)

What's your prediction on the 9 games in 12 day stretch? I'm going 9-3

Tim MacMahon
  (3:05 PM)

Jimmy, might wanna check your math. I'll go with 5-4. I seriously doubt Jason Kidd plays all nine games. The Mavs obviously want to win as many as possible, but this stretch is as much about surviving as anything.

jason (new london tx)

will allowing tyson, deshawn and jj to walk go down as the worst move in team history?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:06 PM)

Sir, have you glanced at the standings recently? It's not like the Mavs are belly up by any stretch of the imagination, and they've got a very good chance to land at least one superstar in his prime this summer. Not sure why you're looking for a window to jump out of.

Carlos (New York )

Do you think the Mavs will move Marion for a chance to get both Dwight and Deron? And if so, do you think they have a real shot at both?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:07 PM)

The Mavs wouldn't move Marion unless they know they can get Williams and Howard. It's not like they're looking to get rid of a guy who has been their MVP so far this season.

Moonrockrussell (Mansfield, TX)

It is strange for me to think of March 15th like Christmas? If D12 is not traded by then, the Mavs have to be the front runners to land him and DWill, right?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:08 PM)

If Howard is still in Orlando after the deadline, I'd call it a good bet that Williams will be a Maverick next season. And I'd say there's a decent chance that the best big man in the league will come with him. I like the Mavs' chances to get Williams unless the Nets can pull off a deal for Howard.

Rick (Dallas)

Odom, traded, bought our or benched....What are your expectations concerning his situation, the fact his dad had just a stomach flu, etc.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:10 PM)

First of all, we don't know whether his dad just had a stomach flu based off of an ambush TMZ interview with a man who has a history of rather severe personal problems. Odom is not getting a buyout. Mark Cuban has made that absolutely clear. The Mavs are hoping he'll be back soon and contribute as an eighth man for the rest of the season.

Jerry (Fort Worth)

What are your thoughts on Roddy Beaubois?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:11 PM)

At some point, you've got to see more than flashes of brilliance to really believe in him. This is a tough situation here for Roddy B., because he has no clear role once Delonte West returns. Plus, I still don't think the guy is a PG. I see him as a Jet Lite without the crunch-time cojones. He might be best off getting a fresh start elsewhere next season.

Jake Holden (Oak Cliff)

How active are the Mavs in trade talks right now, mainly Dwight Howard as there is growing speculation that he will be moved before the deadline now - any other names youve heard that are not mentioned anywhere else?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:12 PM)

Don't hold your breath for the Mavs to be involved in any blockbusters this trade deadline. They don't have the chips to make that happen.

John (Dallas)

With Odom requesting a buy out do you see us now trading him for an expiring at the trade deadline to keep harmony in the locker room?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:14 PM)

According to Donnie Nelson and Mark Cuban, a buyout hasn't even been discussed with Odom and his agent. If the Mavs can get a quality player with an expiring contract for Odom, I'd think they'd pull the trigger on that deal. But why would another team agree to it?

David (Work)

Lamar Odom and Marion for KG? Why not?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:14 PM)

Well, for one, because Marion has more value to the Mavs than KG would.

Albert Gamboa (El Paso, Tx)

The one thing I still saw Lamar Odom being useful is limiting the Big German's minutes, now that I see he isn't going to play the next two games (maybe even more) especially with the 9 games in 12 days schedule coming up, Odom is not useful anymore.. Your opinions?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:16 PM)

I can't make a good case for Odom's value at this point. But I couldn't make much of a case for Brendan Haywood's value a year ago, and he played a key role during the playoffs. If Odom comes through in May and June -- and it's a big if -- all this drama will be easily forgotten.

Justin (Ft. Worth)

Who eats up the backup PF minutes with Odom gone? Do we see more Yi or does Marion slide over to PF more now?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:17 PM)

Yi, Brandan Wright, Brian Cardinal. Don't think the Mavs can ask Marion to pick up minutes at PF with everything else that he's doing. He's already talking about wearing down as a 33-year-old small forward being the primary PG defender.

Beau Barnes (Dallas)

Why has Carslile started playing Brendan Wright a lot more than Mahimi? Trade bait? For Deron and Dwight?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:17 PM)

Because Brandan Wright has been more productive than Ian Mahinmi. The Mavs are in the business of trying to win games, not just waiting for next season.

Albert Gamboa (El Paso, Tx)

I know this is a wait till Summer question but what happens if the Mavs can't land Deron Williams or Dwight Howard in free agency? What other free agents will be out there?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:18 PM)

Steve Nash is the best of the rest. Gotta say, the idea of Steve Nash reuniting with Dirk on a short-term deal is awfully intriguing.

D (Univeristy of Texas @ San Antonio)

Lots of talk about D.Will and Superman's availability this coming off season free agency pool; should MAVs even consider packaging a deal that lands both D.Will and Howard for oh.. let's say, Dirk? Is this even feasible?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:19 PM)

I'm concerned about the admission standards at UTSA. Would the Nets get Dirk's left hand and the Magic his right hand? The whole point is to try to put a superstar or two on the floor with Dirk as he nears his golden years.

Mike (Arlington)

How does the fact that Odom has the same agent at Deron Williams complicate matters? Does Cuban have to do his best to maintain a good relationship w/ the agent even if he is very unhappy with Odom?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:23 PM)

Wouldn't say it complicates matters. The Mavs pride themselves in treating players right regardless. But they're especially not going to do a guy wrong if he has an agent with a ton of other high-profile agents, including a guy they'd love to get this summer. But that doesn't mean they have a lifetime commitment to any Jeff Schwartz clients they get. He also represents Devin Harris and Tyson Chandler among others.

John (Dallas)

Anything big planned for Stevenson's ring ceremony tonight so that Deron gets the full experience in Dallas?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:24 PM)

I assume he'll get the same treatment as the other ex-Mavs -- a video tribute, a speech from Rick Carlisle and hugs from the coach and Mark Cuban while the crowd gives him a standing ovation. Gotta admit Stevenson is one of my favorites among guys that I've covered. He's a fun kind of crazy.

Jordan (Florida)

Is there a role for Brandan Wright on this team? He seems to have the talent but Carlisle gives him such limited minutes.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:26 PM)

Wright's role is battling for backup big man minutes with Ian Mahinmi and could get PT at power forward while Odom is out.

Dylan (Denton)

If Howard hits free agency, is there any chance Dallas doesn't immediately use the amnesty clause on Haywood?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:27 PM)

Why use it immediately? What's the hurry? What if Howard decides to sign somewhere else? Who starts at center next season? They aren't going to use the amnesty clause unless they are certain of the next step.

james (my casa)

Has it been just me, or has Haywood looked very good this year anchoring the paint on D.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:28 PM)

You can't be a top-five defense without a legit big man serving as the backbone. Haywood is earning his money this season.

carlos (my cube)

what about trade odom and roddy b for Nash. Nash can be are new Barea. Nash also is an expiring.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:29 PM)

You don't think the Suns could get a better deal than that if they put the NBA's assists leader on the block?

Arnie (NY)

Shouldn't David Stern start vetoing Kardashian marriages to NBA players "for basketball reasons?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:31 PM)

Not a bad line, but a low blow. Khloe Kardashian isn't the problem. The Mavs people appreciate her passion and commitment to Lam Lam's career. It's also notable that she sat in her chair and continued to cheer after Odom got tossed in the season opener.

tito (cali)

Yo Tim, Dirk and Kobe are the only players that have no trades clauses. Dirk is not going to be traded. C'mon Man!

Tim MacMahon
  (3:31 PM)

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought my doubts about the deal were clear by wondering if he'd be dismembered in the process.

Jason (Chicago)

Seems like most people at ESPN think it's The Thunder/Heat finals with a slight chance that Chicago/San Antonio could sneak in there. As bold as picking the 1 and 2 seeds are, my question is this... Did The Dallas Mavericks not teach anyone anything last year? I think they are in excellent shape. Don't you think Dallas should be one of the favorites?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:33 PM)

I think the Mavs have as good a chance as anybody to come out of the West. OKC is the obvious favorite, but I'd pick the Mavs over the Thunder in a series. I'm convinced that the Mavs have mental mojo over their neighbors to the north.

Tim (Florida)

Is there anyway VC stays beyond his one year here. I've grown quite fond of him and he brings an element at SG that nobody brought before (since Finley). If they waive him to make room, can they resign him at the minimum or just keep him at 3 million next year and eat out other contracts?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:33 PM)

There's a good chance. He has a three-year deal. The next two years aren't fully guaranteed, but there's a buyout that I believe is a significant chunk of his mini-midlevel salary.

Heathcliffe (ATX)

With Nash being a FA...what would you think of a Nash/Kidd 1-2 punch?? Could they play on the court together?! I can't imagine that fast break, there would be several passes involved...

Tim MacMahon
  (3:35 PM)

I've been banging that drum for months. It's a heck of a Plan D. Dirk would be playing with his two favorite PGs, and it be easy to manage the geezers' minutes. Nash could definitely play in the same backcourt as Kidd at times, too, much like JJ Barea used to.

Arnie (NY)

How about this trade: Odom and Marion to the Sixers for Elton Brand. I think it benefits both teams.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:36 PM)

Why are people trying to dump Shawn Marion? Is Elton Brand going to defend everybody from Chris Paul to Kobe Bryant?

bobby (hurst)

how long is Odom's contract for, and for how much per year. if it is for more than one-year, isn't that going to hurt our FA?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:37 PM)

He's due $8.2 million next season, but there is a $2.4 million buyout.

Dylan (Denton)

Let's say the Mavs were able to land Howard and Williams in FA. The rest of the team's construction gets a little foggy. If they were to sign both the big fishes, would they be able to resign Kidd and Terry for whatever since they have "Bird rights?"

Tim MacMahon
  (3:39 PM)

They'd have to give up their Bird rights to create that cap space. The Mavs would have to fill out the roster with a mini-midlevel exception, minimum-salary vets and rookies. Could Kidd or Terry come back for the mini-midlevel? Minimum salary? That's up to them and their agents. Worth noting that Kidd shares an agent with Deron Williams and Terry shares an agent with Dwight Howard.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:39 PM)

Gotta go. Hit me up on Twitter @espn_macmahon if I didn't touch your topic.
