Sorry for being a few minutes later. Was on conference call with Roger Penske. Fire away.
I really like Ryan McGee's new name for Juan PabloFireball Montoya! (No disrespect to Roberts of course)
Ryan is a hoot.
Which Drivers Competed in Both the Indianapolis 500 & the Daytona 500 in History Counting 2012?
None this year. Stewart has, Bobby Allison has, Robby Gordon I believe has. Others have too, but don't have time to google for you.
Carl Edwards passed Logano below the double yellow line coming to the checkers, yet he was scored 8th. Why wasn't he scored as the last car on the lead lap?
Good question if that happened. I honestly missed it. Will look into it though.
newt, they should rename the bud shoot out the coors clash. will never happen but sure does sound cool
They can't because with Budwesier's association with Daytona International the track can't have another beer company come in as a sponsor
When will the DIS personnel inspect the integrity of the track in turn 3 and consider repaving options?
They already are looking into it. One of the calls I still have to make. Penske announcement pre-empted that today.
Told you Joey Logano wouldn't win the 500!
Hey, top-10 not bad though. I still believe he will make the Chase
After wrecking all of his cars at Daytona, does Urt have any left for Phoenix?
Yep. Went to their shop a few weeks ago. They have plenty. These were all speedway cars.
After seeing his small team take three times as long to fix his car as Danica's did with similar damage, is Urt still having fun?
Not as much as he was a few weeks ago.
Many experts gave Daytona as the best chance for Urt to win a race. With his disastrous finish, is the season over for Urt?
Am I crazy to think of that: If Newman don't improve this season, he won't be in SHR car next season. I think Kyle Busch could replace him, if his contract with JGR is not affecting it.
Don't forget Danica is waiting for a full ride. Maybe SHR goes to two cars with her as the other. I don't see Kyle leaving JGR.
After what happened to the truck jet dryer, is there going to be any safety changes?
NASCAR is looking at it, but honestly it was a freak thing.
I see that Matt Kenseth is No. 1 in the ESPN Cross-Sport Power Rankings - that's awesome! Normally, winning the Daytona 500 is not much of an indicator how the rest of the season will go but I really feel the strongest cars (17, 88, 16, 11) were out front at the end of the race and I think this year could be different. Your thoughts?
Matt isn't a freak winner. He is a former champion and could have been one last year if not for a run-in with Vickers at Martinsville. Wouldn't suprrise me if he won this week, too.
Hi Newt, we 100% agree with ESPN's Brad Daugherty when he said that Brad K. tweeting during the 500 as inappropriate and we think he disrespected the Daytona 500 and NASCAR too. Do you think his sponsors and team will be fining and penalizing him especially since he was fined by NASCAR at Homestead for his negative comments on EFI?
Who is we? Look at the interest it brought to the sport. NASCAR already has said no penalty and that Brad can tweet when the car is sitting still moving fowward. I disagree totally with Brad on this
At the last race of the season, Brad K. made stupid comments about the fuel injection and was fined by NASCAR and now he goes breaking rules at the first race with this tweeting. When is NASCAR gonna crack down on him and get him in line?
He actually made the commments about fuel injection at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. I was there. NASCAR didn't think he broke any rules with the tweeting. It's not that big of a deal. Several drivers were tweeting from their cars prior to several practices.
The last time Dale Jr. finished 2nd at the Daytona 500 he went on the finish 22nd in final points. Do you think we should expect a repeat performance?
21st, but get your point. But I believe Junior has a much stronger team, particularly at crew chief, that he did in 2010.
The Hendrick cars of Tony, Gordon, Ryan, Kurt, Johnson, Danica and Kahne had a terrible races and I was wondering if it is a bad sign for HMS when the #88 is the best running car?
If you remember Junior's first year at HMS he had the best running car the first half of the season. As I recall Jimmie won the title. Too early to make predictions of doom.
At last years Phoenix spring race we had the epic battle between Rowdy and Gordon with Jeff declaring, "we beat Kyle Busch" and I was wondering if you think we could see that again with the new track configuration?
Could be, but I suspect you'll see a few other drivers in the mix. Jimmie and Chad are pretty good at Phoenix and you know they will be motivated.
With his 2nd Daytona 500 win Matt still only has 22 cup wins compared to 23 for Rowdy and 24 for Kurt and I wondered if you rate Matt on the same level of The Busch Bros due to his two 500 wins?
I rate Matt ahead with a Cup title and two Daytona 500 wins.
What was the Last NASCAR Race that was on Leap Day February 29?
Do you spend all week trying to stump me? Haven't a clue? Guessing California.
Hi Newt, with the way Paul and Slugger beat Harvick in the 500 do you think Paul might finish ahead of his teammates this year?
I wouldn't bet on it.
Is it starting to look like Stewart, Edwards, Burton and Junebug are destined to go down like Rusty and Mark Martin and never win the Daytona 500 or in the case of Dale, again?
Way too early to say that. Took Earnhardt 20 years, Waltrip 17. Cream rises to the top.
If Biffel wasn't blocking Jr. I'm positive Dale would have beat Matt and wondered why NASCAR didn't black flag the #16 so that Jr. would have won the race?
Biffle wasn't blocking. It just shows how strong Kenseth's car was and how effective NASCAR's changes to the cars were. Hey, Biffle likes Matt OK, but not enough to give him the win.
Now that we are getting back to normal racing at Phoenix do you expect to see the usual guys like Rowdy, Johnson, Edwards and Gordon challenging for the win?
What happened to Hendrick Motorsports? Do you think Mr. H's bold statement about all 4 cars making the chase now looks highly unlikely?
Heck no. Just the typical Daytona craziness. Talk to me in 10 weeks and we'll see where they all are.
I give Sadler some credit for admitting it was his "boneheaded" driving, like Ragan called it, that wrecked out Jimmie but doesn't he also owe an apology to Kurt, Danica and David Ragan too?
In a strange sort of way, I guess he does. Think one apology kind of covered itall.
Rowdy and Dave didn't seem too concerned with 17th in the 500 so do you think Rowdy's amazing shootout win jump started the #18 team into championship contention?
The late penalty for ripping off the tear off sheet hurt his effort. You never know what you will get a Daytona with all the madness. That team will be strong all season.
How will Montoya's crash affect television ratings for the next few weeks? I know ratings shot up after Dale Sr's incident in the 500
It definitely boosted them for Daytona. The ratings peaked during the red flag if you can believe that. Maybe Keselowski tweeting had something to do with it too. But it definitely caught the casual fan's eye and should get a few to tune in this week.
Kenseth had a great oneliner on Twitter. Someone said that this Daytona would be remembered for the weather and fire. Matt responded with 'yup...and don't forget Danica'. Love that guy. God bless Newt.
I saw that. Matt is a funny guy. Nothing not to like about im.
David Ragan called Sadler a "bonehead" for wrecking out so many good cars on lap 2 of the race and I wondered if Sadler called Kurt, Danica and David to apologize like he did to Jimmie?
Again, one apology sufficed.
What Race do you think that Danica Patrick will do the Best in either in Nationwide Series or Sprint Cup in 2012?
July Daytona. Not Darlington or Bristol.
Who are your top 5 for this Sunday?
Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon and Joey Logano.
Has Urt attracted any other sponsors besides that sun glass company and Robbie Loomis's mortgage?
newt the finish of the 500 was kinda disappointing. was expecting more drama late but didnt get it. thought if jr woulda fell back and got pushed by the 11 he would have won it. your thoughts
Think we had enough drama by 1 am.
Favorites this weekend for the cup race? I like Jeff Gordon
Just posted mine. Jeff is among them.
Who do you have in the nationwide race saturday? I'm thinking Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Haven't studied that field much to see what Cup drivers are entered. I like Sam Hornish Jr. who won there last fall.
Hi Newt, as Hendrick is adamant that Knaus and the #48 team is innocent of these latest charges, shouldn't he commit to terminating Knaus employment at HMS should they lose the appeals?
Hardly. Losing an appeal when you believe you're right is nothing neww. If people were fired for losing appeals Jack Roush would have a long list of people he's let go.
Newt, if Knaus shouldn't be considered a "villain" for pushing it as you write in today's story shouldn't the same be applied to drivers as in, Rowdy shouldn't be considered a villain for pushing the gray area in aggressiveness?
That would be my taken. Was Earnhardt a villain or hero?
Do you think Biffle's momentum from speed weeks will carry into the racing at Phoenix this weekend?
Big year for Biff. He can't afford to miss the Chase with two young stars behind him looking for rides. He and team owner Jack Roush have committed to improving this year, so this will be a sign.
I understand that NASCARs position is that racing in the rain does not produce the level of competition that they prefer, however this pass weekend was rediculous. How is anyone served by it being delayed by over a day and then not being on television? Seems to me that if you delay for so long that you loose tv coverage then you are ruining your product. You loose all the tv sets and the commercial money during the event. It was totally inexcusable for the biggest race of the year to not be on tv! If motorcycles on two wheels, nationwide, and almost every other racing organization can race in the rain why can't NASCAR? I would have taken that product over nothing any weekend and nothing is what NASCAR gave me this past sunday.
In this case, Nascar came out a winner with a primetime telecast of the 500. Highest rated Fox 500 ever I believe. Reached more than 36 million households at some point. The ratings were 7.7, not bad for a rain-delayed race. And the crowd at the track was amazing. Not sure NASCAR could have done anymore under the circumstances. You can't put rain tires on cars to go 200 mph.
Hey Newt, do you think the Biff will be back in victory lane this season? Or was the 500 just one good race
He typically wins a race or two, and as I said earlier he is committed more than ever this year.
So do you think Penskee will tap into yates for they're engines or will they build they're own in-house?
Good question. Penske bing non-commital about that on the conference call has me believing Roush Yates engines are an option.
Do you know if Kenseth ever paid Jr. for the bet that he lost during the offseason?
LOL. I forgot to ask. But that was funny.
I just sent Matt a message on Twitter asking. We'll see if he responds. If he does I'll pass along the answer.
Any ideas what is going to happen with Dodge now that Penske is leaving for Ford? Will Dodge be out of NASCAR?
Dodge says it has a plan, but can't imagine it's a very good one with what's out there.
What happen to jeff gordons engine at daytona, n where do you see him in the standings at the end of the year?
He'll make the Chase, maybe even make a run at the title. When he blew he'd been pushing Hamlin I believe. Haven't heard more since the teardown.
Is this the nail in Robby Gordons Nascar coffin?
Hope not. Independent owners like him are good for the sport.
Better year kyle bush or jeff gordon?
David,Should BK and AJ be worried abotut their cars for the rest of THIS year? Will Dodge cut back on the resources they provide Penske or have those checks already been handed over before the season?
Another good question. My guess would be yes, but Dodge says it is committed to helping BK and AJ win a title. Sure helps the manufacturer get another team by being good.
Have we seen the end of Dodge in NASCAR?
I hope not, but this isn't good news. Not sure what team would step forward to keep it afloat and competitive.
How do you feel having more NSCS driver points right now than Jimmie Johnson?
Never thought about it like that. Maybe I should start a team. Dodge may help.
Hi Newt! Does the FR9 engine that Rowdy Brad will have in 2013 put him as an instant favorite for the Cup?
He certainly has to like the new power he'll inherit. But remember he won 3 races last season. Edwards won one and Biffle none. Dodge was pretty good. Kurt won a race or two last year too.
If Jr had known Biddle was racing for second do you think he could have won?
Biff wasn't running for second. Think he was as surprised as anybody the two-cars wouldn't push past the one.
As a huge Kurt Busch fan, do you think his decision to part ways with Penske, now that that team is sure to have a lousy 2012, is looking very shrewd and smart?
Do you really believe it was a muutal agreement? He was fired.
If Knaus loses his appeal and is suspended for 6 races can he go to work for another team like maybe Kurt's #51?
With Penske moving to Ford will they be using customer Roush-Yates Ford motors like RPM, Woods and others?
Up in the air. For the sake of Penske's 70 employees in the engine shop I hope not.
Being a Toyota fan, I had hoped that Penske would go Toyota instead of Ford but do you think Dodge will pick up a new team like maybe RCR or DEI?
Never RCR. DEI, a part of Ganassi Racing, says it never will leave Chevy. Not sure what else is out there for Dodge. Maybe RPM. Petty has a long history with Dodge.
Hi Newt, I'm a lifelong Dodge man and was wondering if you think Dodge will get some new teams like maybe Childress or Earnhardt?
Rowdy showed so much class last year at Phoenix when Gordon barely beat him and was wondering if you think we might see a repeat of that epic battle again on Sunday?
I'd be all for it, and I'm sure Gordon would, too. But I like JJ in this one.
Will Penske Racing build its own engines or receive them from Roush Yates?
That is the $60,000 question. Penske wouldn't commit to an answer.
Does Penske Racing's switch to Fords impact Brad Keselowski Racing, which fields Rams in the NCWTS?
Would guess BK Racing has to move to Ford's as well, but since Brad doesn't drive for his truck team that might simplify things. Not like Busch driving a Dodge in Trucks and Toyota in Cup.
Hey Newt, Hendrick said, "Our organization respects NASCAR" so then why doesn't that organization respect NASCAR rules?
He does. He just thinks Nascar made a mistake. It's OK to fight with somebody you respect, isn't it. If not nobody would remain married.
Dave, I see the Penske is moving to Ford which leaves Dodge out of teams except for Robby Gordon maybe. I figure someone will switch to go with them (hopefully they come out with the 'Cuda for next year) Anyway, the main reason I ask about manufacture switching is that I heard there is an 'outside' company talking to some teams about coming into the NASCAR ranks. Have you heard anything about that?
Honda has sniffed around. Was a rumor about Volkswagen a few years ago. This does open the door for another manufacturer, but it faces the same problem Dodge does -- not a quality team to link to.
What are the odds of two MWR teams making the chase?
Since all hms car are built in the same fab.shop.why do you think jj car was the only one found illegal? Our does this mean he has different cars
While they all are built in the same shop, each team has certain areas they are allowed to work on to improve performance.
Ky. Busch was one of the few seen as an utter favorite for Daytona after he lost control in the Bud Shootout and the car saved itself. After his lackluster performance do you think he'll be seen as a favorite again Newt?
Yep. Remember, he had a penalty there late that put him back in the field. Were it not for that he might have been in position to make a move.
Newt - great article on my favorite driver. Growing up in SE Wisconsin, I'm a fan of Matt's & Robbie Reiser going back to watching them at Slinger Speedway. Great to see that he is appreciated by those around the sport. Any word on any of those other 15 races that are not sponsored yet - Ford EcoBoost like the 6 this last weekend at the least?
Not yet. I talked with the Roush folks today and they still are working on it.
First Kurt Busch, now Dodge... Sounds like Penske is gettin rid of his extra baggage. What do you think is next?
It's a known fact that Ky. Busch like to... Essentially choke in the chase as it were. Do you think he'll be able to get past such a hurdle this year Newt, or is he destined never to win a championship?
He's still a young pup. I believe he'll win multiple titles.
In the 500, why couldn't the outside line move to the front? Early the 24 was high, but couldn't push and late we saw the 29 in the top lane and couldn't make any progress. Was it the track, the weather or the new car package?
The new car package. Totally changed the way th is race was run.
I think NASCAR should extend the caution period by one lap to allow the wave around cars plenty of time to catch the back of the field in order to avoid what happened with JPM and the jet dryer. Your thoughts?
Either that or make drivers go slower trying to catch the field. Think we're thinking alike, though.
With Penske switching to Ford in 2013, can we expect to see any top tier teams switch to Dodge in 2013? Dodge seems to be putting a lot of effort into their version of the new 2013 cup car.
Yeah, Hendrick. Just kidding. Top tier teams are committed. RPM's deal with Ford is up after this year, but RPM isn't a top tier team.
I'm a relatively new NASCAR fan (2008). When i watch restrictor plate racing, I'm always amazed at the amount of crashes that take out huge numbers of cars. Is it really safer with restrictor plates then if the cars were more spread out and not taking everyone out with them?
Definitely. If you didn't have plates they'd be going 240 mph and that could be fatal. Glad to have you board, by the way.
what was wrong with kyle?he was a non factor all night
He was biding his time. Ran up front some. The penalty cost him.
After the way jr ran at daytona, do you think he will win more than one race this year?
Two as I said before the season and said last season when I was wrong.
Penske has got to be the new #2 in the Ford camp next year. Where does that leave RPM? Dodge maybe?
Definitely the No. 2 team. And with RPM's contract with Ford up it opens the door for Dodge to snag it up.
I am hoping Stewart Haas adds another restrictor plate race to Danica's Sprint Cup schedule since Daytona did not turn out well. Is there a chance it could happen ?
Can't remember if she is at Dega or not. What she needs is experience on tracks where she has none. She has plate experience.
Wow Dave, what an announcement by Penske Racing!! I cannot believe that this is a move based on performance considering they won 5 races last year and both car made the Chase. Also, Brad K tweeted a few days ago about a new commercial for the 2013 Dodge Blue Deuce. So why the move to Ford all of a sudden? Is Dodge done in NASCAR??
It is a move to win titles, something Penske hasn't in Cup. Ford has the best engines in the business now. Make since. Plus it gives Penske another strong team to share information with. Not sure about Dodge being done, but this is a pretty big nail.
Mr. Newton we are appalled that the 6 of Stenhouse was allowed to continue racing after he wrecked Rowdy. Should NASCAR make Stenhouse sit out a race?
Hey PK. With Penske headed to ford who do you think could move to Dodge, or will they leave the sport?
That is the popular question. RPM seems like the most likely candidate, but Petty and Dodge had their differences when they split.
Any word on whether or not Best Buy ups their commitment for the 17 after the 500 win?
I have asked and they have not as of today.
Is JGR switching from Toyota to Dodge really a rumor or just a bad rumor?
Rumor, but that would be the best case scenario for Dodge. And the JGR folks are just hard headed enough to believe they can do this on their own.
Did the haulers went back to the shops in NC after the Monday night race or they just drove it from FL to AZ? I don't know how that work.
Back to N.C. first. Keep the drivers in your thoughts. They are the unsung heroes of the week. 8 hours to Charlotte and then 33 to Phoenix with barely a break.
With Kenseth winning his 2nd Daytona 500, do you see him making the HOF after he retires? Also, what current drivers do you have making it in?
Guaranteed. Also Johnson, Gordon and Stewart.
Newt, with Penske switching to Ford, how soon can we expect Rowdy Brad to win a championship with the FR9 engine? I expect him to win it this year, but 2013?
I am sure he appreciates your confidence.
David, any inside scoop on Penske to Ford next year yet?
Check out the story on ESPN.com.
Mr. Newton, how do the writers choose which answer to answer? I have yet to have any of mine answered.
I usually go in order.
Was Smoke disappointed about his 500 finish? I did not get to see his reaction.
I didn't get to see them either. He didn't stick around, which means he was either tired or didn't like the results.
Looking at the ratings, I am beating the folks over at Fox are thinking a nighttime Daytona 500 ain't such a bad idea.
Ratings still were down seven percent from 2011. But I like the idea of a primetime weeknight race or two. How about Thursdays?
Are you heading to Phoenix for the race and any plans to catch a Cactus League game while in Zona?
I wish. I'm at home this weekend and next, then off to Bristol. Have to wash some clothes.
do you think the suspension of chad knaus will affect jimmie johnson's season?
Yeah, will make him more determined. Last time Knaus was suspended JJ won the title and two of four races while Knaus was out.
Junior could make the HoF too...18 wins including the 500, all star win, 9 time most popular and who knows how well he will be as an owner when it is all said and done, not a first ballaot but it could happen
Don't forget all the most popular driver awards. Sure that will figure in. It's about impact to the sport, and he has had a big one.
Biffle wasnt racing for second? You watch the same race i did? Roush already did the ford team orders with Bayne/Gordon last year. Same thing if you ask me.
Agreed, he wanted the win.
That's it for me. Back to the Penske-Dodge-Ford grind. Thanks for all the questions. As usual, check me out on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn. Help me pick up 100,000 followers like Brad K did at Daytona.
