Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings people and pets. I'm happy to see you here. It's beautiful where I am. Hope you've got the same opener to March.

Ammar (Raleigh, NC)

1 win... Isn't that a big difference maker in the Peyton Manning saga? If the Colts win one more game, secure #2 pick and we are having a different discussion, aren't we? RG3 is work-in-process and he wouldn't have minded sitting behind Manning. Or the pick could have been easily traded.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Yup. That sums it up. They should have beaten the Steelers early on, too.

Ej (Indiana)

After the Colts Draft Andrew Luck who do they draft after him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

If there is a big time 3-4 defensive tackle, that might be my first choice. But they need help everywhere: Corner, offensive line, receiver.

Kyle (Ottawa, Ontario)

What do you do if your Jacksonville? Sign Vincent Jackson and draft Melvin Ingram or sign Mario Williams and draft Kendall Wright/Michael Floyd?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

I LOVE Vincent Jackson. But if you can get Mario Williams, I think you have to go that direction. Very good question. You have the lead.

Brian T (DFW)

Do you see the Texans going after Colston, Wallace, or Garcon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

None of the above. They don't have the money. Their receiver help will come from the draft or be a much lower profile free agent than any of those.

(silence) (Hollywood, CA)

(silence)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

Can't hear you.

Hines Ward (Steel City)

Am I getting a call from Tennessee at some point this offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

I don't understand why anyone would be interested in Hines Ward. He shouldn't be a top three receiver on your team. No. 4 receivers have to play special teams and big-name veterans don't. You don't really think he's got more play-making ability that Damian Williams or Lavelle Hawkins, do you?

Wayne (Phoenix, AZ)

Best Available is a great situation for the draft and I'd love to see the Texans draft a high ceiling WR in the 1st. With receiver stock rising after the combine do you think the Texans will have a solid WR option available at 26 without reaching?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

Might be reaching. I'd say if there are two you like there, you can bump back a bit and get one of them. At this point that's my feeling, anyway.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, I regret to inform your readers that I haven't heard from Jim Irsay. I don' think he likes me anymore. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

When you get to your new spot, I'm going to be your get-info-out guy. I can feel it.

Pierre Garcon (Indy)

So do you think the Colts will give me the big bucks, or will I be playing for some other team like the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Some other team. And it better be thinking you are a No. 2.

Mike Griffin (Nashville)

Hey Do you think the titans will tag me before the deadline?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

I don't think they will and I definitely don't think they should.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/42739/nfl-with-paul-kuharsky" target="_blank">If Barron is there, Titans should pounce.</a>

Alex (VA)

Do you see the Jags trading up or down in the first round in any scenario?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

My guess would be they would not be anxious to give up picks.

Wesley (Nashville)

Paul, I know Titans have other needs, and I'm probably in the minority, but our best year in recent memory was 2008 when CJ AND Lendale were sharing the load. What are the odds we bring a solid #2 RB in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Slim. They've invested reasonable picks in Javon Ringer and Jamie Harper.

Matt (Indiana)

Just read today from Bob Kravitz that Mathis' contract talks are heating up. You see us using him as a stand up guy and moving Jamaal Anderson to DE? Also, what do you think is a reasonable contract given his age and recent numbers? Thanks Paul

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Can't say on numbers. Have heard he loves the idea of being Terrell Suggs. Anderson isn't under contract, I don't believe.

ronnie (houston)

Do you think that Matt Schaub foot injury is healed as they say, or will it beA career ender

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

They have not said it's healed. They've said it's progressing well. I'm not one to jump to an unsubstantiated conclusion that anything is career-ending.

Mike Thomas (Jax)

Do the jags over pay me for another season, or is my laziness going to make me end up on the street??

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

You can't cut a guy less than a year after he gets a deal. You have to coach him out of it. May have quit based on QB play. Not an excuse.

Doug (Nashville, TN)

Jags fan who recently moved to Nashville here. Paul, are Titans fans at the stadium hospitable to opposing fans or should I hide my affection for my beloved Jags when I'm there? Are they mean and nasty like Philly fans? Don't let the big man hurt me!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

Probably as hospitable as you'll find, though I'm not in the stands a lot, and by a lot I mean never.

Clif (MD)

I keep hearing about the Jags going after Colston. Do you think he would be a good fit or is he a product of the Saints offense and Brees?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

He is a product of the offense, like most good receivers are. And he could be part of a good offense elsewhere too.

2ToneBlueBlood (murfreesboro tn)

I've seen you mention a few times that you think the Titans should pursue Mathis or Freeney. Chances you think it will actually happen?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Freeney is under contract. If he's released they'd have to look. And they have to look at Mathis. They know they need a guy with special rush skills and that there are few of them. But if someone is giving them crazy money, it probably won't be Tennessee.

Buzzmaster
  (12:28 PM)

Hang on folks....Paul's having some technical difficulties.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Apologies for technical difficulties. Looks like I am back. Hope you are still with me.

Trip (Jax)

How much does Greg Jones have left in the tank?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Enough. But fullbacks are overrated. The big run game development for the Jags will be the return of Rashad Jennings.

Alex (VA)

How good can be Colts be with Luck under center to start the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Not very. Shaky line, likely questions at receiver, defense in transition.

Trip (Jax)

Weakest spot on the Jags' O-Line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Receiver. By a mile. O-line run blocks well. Britton's return will help round things out. [Apologies upon re-reading. Not in love with Will Rackley yet, but RT is a question mark until Eben Britton is healthy and proven. Time to find ceter of the future, also.]

Vince (AZ)

Now I'm really hoping the Titans land Mark Barron after reading your article. Maybe you can raise my excitement by writing about a player MORE likely to be there when the Titans make their 20th pick? I just don't see this happening.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

Root for him not to have a pro day. Maybe he's worth moving up for.

Trip (Jax)

Can the Jags trade back in the first round to pick a different 1st rd (used for mike wallace) and another 2nd rd (draft another WR)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

Interesting idea. Not sure if you can do it without your original pick. If you can, you'd have to trade back well before the draft. Not a lot of teams want to make a big move up on that schedule.

lauren (ohio)

if garcon and wayne both leave who are the wr's gonna be and do you think they go after colston

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

Well, Austin Collie would be tops. But he needs to be a second. If they can't re-sign Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon (and they can keep one with the tag if they want to) then how could they afford to chase someone like Colson?

chris (boston)

do you see the titans trying to sign a WR like the ex giants steve smith? he was great w the giants and coming off injury was unproductive last year and could be cheap w high potential

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

I disagree that he will be cheap. I think the Titans like their top four and will look for a guy with upside to develop.

kelly (indy)

who will the colts take in the 2nd round

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Who are the first 33 picks?

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, some mock drafts have Justin Blackmon going to the Jaguars, while others have them drafting Coples. Should Blackmon fall to the Jaguars in the draft, do you feel they should draft him? By the way, the weather is not too bad here - but we now have 14 inches of snow on the ground.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

I don't know how they will feel about Blackmon. But Coples has serious work ethic questions that don't line up with what the Jags like and want.

Gary the best coach in the AFC Kubiak (Living High in H-Town)

From what I'm reading Kansas City is the front runner for the Peyton Manning sweepstakes if they were to land him how do you see that working out especially if they lose Dwayne Bowe to free agency

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

You should read different stuff. No one knows who the frontrunner is.

Nick (Jacksonville)

Should the Jags go after Wallace? Will they?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

He costs a first-rounder. Is he worth the No. 7 pick? I don't believe so. I don't believe they'll think so.

Bobby (Buffalo)

Are the titans going to use their franchise tag or just let it pass?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

I'd guess B. I think Griffin is the only guy in play.

Mark (Madison, WI)

Do you think moving to a 3-4 would increase the chances the Colts hang on to Brackett? He and Angerer could make an interesting duo inside with Mathis and Freeney rushing on the outside.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Sure, but not at his current price. Something on the blog a little later will touch on that.

Awayne (Indy)

Colts go 3-4 what do you do with Nevis, good potential but doesn't fit in 3-4 probably doesn't have much trade value?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Which is part of why it is a gradual shift, not a one-year overhaul.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Who did you think the Jags take if the were to get Mario and Colston in free agency with their number 7 pick in first round?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

Would be a dream if Morris Claiborne was there.

Mark (Ithaca, NY)

I read you post " If Barron is there..", would you still take Barron over Decastro, Konz, Perry, or Mercilus if they are all still on the board. What about Harrison Smith or George Lloka in the 2nd?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

I can't pretend to have looked closely at them all yet. But they aren't taking an offensive lineman in the first round unless they have a real shift in thinking. And I don't see a Mike Munchak/ Bruce Matthews huge shift in thinking.

Ted (San Francisco)

Kubiak should know from his Denver time that his system can make a star of any RB. They should give Foster the minimum offer and HOPE that someone gives up a first rounder for him. If they did that and cut Jacoby Jones, might they have room to sign a free agent upgrade at WR?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

They might. But if Ben Tate gets hurt early, aren't you in big trouble? If they lose Chris Myers and/or Mike Brisiel, can't a back who's been great in the system help offset the OL losses?

Richard (Knoxville)

Other teams are talking about franchising their player and then trying to trade them. Why wouldn't the Titans try this with Finnegan considering he would be top corner on market?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

He's not the top corner, he's one of the three top corners. You can spend an awful lot of time and energy trying that and risk this: He signs it and he's yours for the year at that number.

Tyler (Duval)

Paul, Why should the Jags take Couples over Ingram? Couples has been known to give up/take plays off/give less effort when his team isn't that good. Why would he give a better effort for the Jags when we all know that we aren't quite there yet. Personally I would like Ingram over Couples if we have to take a DE.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

As I've said, I can't see them liking Coples with the effort issue.

Vince (AZ)

Does Freeney fit in a 3-4 defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Probably could. But when you're as good as he is, I don't know why you'd want to move or why they'd want to mess with him.

chris (boston)

why do you think Michael Griffin has been so wildly inconsistent, he shows flashes or greatness and then follows it up by getting burned

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Because he's not that good.

Mario Williams (The Bank)

Wallace would look really good with are offense...he is worth the 1st round pick#26

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

Maybe. But the contract you have to give him is a lot bigger than the one No. 26 will get.

Jason (Nashville)

Is there a chance the Titans sign Mathis and still take a DE in the first round?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

Sure.

Awayne (Indy)

Colts need 10 -12 new starters some would say as many as 15,and don't have a ton of cap space so FA will be of the min. wage type guys.If they can fill 3-4 starting spots longterm from this draft they are on the right path.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

And don't assume cutting people saves money. Guys like Gary Brackett or Melvin Bullitt can cost as much or more if let go due to acceleration of their remaining prorated bonuses.

Ted (Jax)

Who has the better chance to hit free agency Lowery or Mincey?? And of the two who has the better chance of Being resigned by the Jags??

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

Lowery is way, way more important. Safety was terrible and they fixed it. Keep it fixed.

Jason (murfreesboro tn)

Do the Titans go out and get another WR in FA or early in the draft? Or are they naive enough to think that Brit will play a full season when he hasn't yet done so?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

They don'r rank WR ahead of other needs: DBs, DE for sure.

Josh (TX)

Munch has been hinting at that the Titans will not go O-Line in the 1st round. If DeCastro is there, how do they pass on him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

He won't be there. And they won't go O-line in the first.

Jason (murfreesboro tn)

In your article about how you would run the Titans, you didn't mention anything about starting QB. Who do you start if you're the coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

I'd let them compete. But I'd start off with Matt Hasselbeck leading.

Doug (MD)

I thought Brayton and Anderson were good, cheap additions for the Colts last year. Think they should keep them on the cheap/will they still be as cheap?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

All depends on how Chuck Pagano views them. No one will knock down their doors.

Wayne (Phoenix, AZ)

Ted from SF, a system can help a RB be good but not great. A RB like Arian Foster is great because of his special skill-set and abilities. Also, why would you want to give up the best 1-2 Punch in the league with Foster and Tate? Gotta sign him.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

What he said.

Richard (Knoxville)

You can revoke a franchise tag up until July 15.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Not if he signs it.

Andrew (Indianapolis, IN)

Do you see an increased roll for Donald Brown in the Indy offense next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I don't see how not.

Frank Lee (Indy)

More important at this point WR to catch Luck passes or OL so luck has a chance to throw passes

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Have to balance them.

Jason (murfreesboro tn)

Is center or guard more of a need for the Titans? I think Amano is descent at guard, if he moves over that just leaves center.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

Best guy they can get and figure it out from there.

kyle (tn)

the titans have flirted with the idea of signing another linebacker in free agency to add depth or to compete with witherspoon. who do you think they'll target if they do go after a linebacker? also whats the chance the jason jones ends up in st louis or philly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

Having a guy in for a visit is not the same as coming close to signing a guy. I am sure Washburn likes Jones, but do the Eagles have room or need?

Tyler (Duval)

Your thoughts on Gene Smith saying the Jags won't be as active in free agency this year as we were last year. Kind of upset me. I understand building through the draft but free agency is a very nice tool you can use.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Don't like it. Hope it's not a set up for a reveal that Shahid Khan won't spend all that money. Two big guys and a draft, that'd be fine.

Andrew (Houston)

I understand not wanting the Texans to reach for a first round WR, but do they have much of a bigger need right now? Obviously there are holes, but the one at WR seems to be the biggest if Andre isn't at 100%

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Still you don't force it. There will be a great guy there at another spot who will help your team in the long run.

Brady Olson (JAX)

Do you think Blaine Gabbert has what it takes to succeed in the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Too early to say.

Coltsfan (Colts City)

I've read that people think Hughes would be a better fit as a stand up LB in a 3-4... think that pick could end up being worth something in this new system afterall?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I agree. He's got a huge third or fourth chance here.

KingKev (TX)

Are there any offensive free agents that could draw interest from the Colts, in order to give Luck some weapons? Michael Bush, Mike Tolbert, Manningham?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

We can't know. Have no idea what Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano believe in or want to try to do yet. Blank slate.

Beans and Cornbread (Grandma's Kitchen)

If the city of Houston gets it's wish and Jacoby Jones is cut, do you see another team taking a chance on him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:00 PM)

Yeah, he'll have a second stop.

Tim Tebow (Living the good life)

Paul should try to hold on to Taylor Swift or do I try and trade for a more expierence veteran? Please help I'm not used to all this attention.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:00 PM)

I like your spot if reports are accurate.

Ike (Houston)

Why haven't we heard anything about Williams contract negotiations or Arian's contract?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

Because there is minimal talk or because both sides in each case want things quiet.

Jason (Nashville)

What do you think the Titans record will be with the 2012 schedule and who is your favorite AFC South team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:03 PM)

You actually think I have a favorite team when I cover four? C'mon man! I think I need to know what they do in free agency and the draft to be in any position to predict what they'll do.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:03 PM)

Thanks folks. Sorry for the missing time. I will make it up to you at some point. Cheers!
