Chat with Inside Lacrosse

Matt Kinnear
  (12:59 PM)

Hello lacrosse fans and welcome to another weekly chat with Inside Lacrosse. We've got Dan Gutierrez and Kevin Cunningham on the line from Villanova

Matt Kinnear
  (12:59 PM)

They're both a big part of Villanova's early-season success and 3-0 record. They've got a big matchup with Delaware this weekend.

Matt Kinnear
  (1:02 PM)

Fire away your questions...

Mike (Manclassic)

Question for both Kevin and Dan, has this early season success on the field led to early season success off it?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:04 PM)

being successful on the field def helps my teammates of the field

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:04 PM)

I try not to let it get to our heads, its a long season and off the field success will come if we keep our focus.

Ryan Lewis (New York)

Who is the best shoooter you have ever faced from Villanova?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:07 PM)

My freshman year, the seniors had some tough shots from Tommy Nolan and Matt Fritts. On the team now Mike Vigilante has the hardest shot...Paul Mita is a big crease-cranker.

Nova Alum (Wayne, Pa)

What has been the big change in Man Up, past few years it hasn't been that very strong, it is like 12-16 so far this season?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:08 PM)

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:08 PM)

the big change in man up has been ball movement. We are focusing on not holding the ball to long and just moving it to the open man.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

What is your early take on UNC? Have they given any indication this season will be different from the last two, that started out promising, but eventually fell short of expectations?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:09 PM)

there a good team im sure they will have a good year

Red (Auburn)

Kevin, would you consider yourself to be the offensive field general? it seems like you help set up the offense and get Jack Rice Goals, is this because of your matching hair style?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:12 PM)

Because Jack is a fellow ginger he is immediately my first option to pass too. Our hair color gives each other great chemistry on and off the field.

NYNOVA79 (NYC)

Guttz- great start for the team and for yourself. I think the first 5 min of each game so far you have stepped up and made some great saves- which has carried over to the entire team. Keep it going and play 1 game at a time. Go Cats!!!

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:14 PM)

hah thank you and appreciate it. defense continues to improve each game and offense has stepped up in our first 3 games

Nova Alum (Wayne Pa)

I notice you run a short offensive bench, who would impresses if they got in game

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:17 PM)

Eric Gartner and Mike Francia are two names that are going to impress people over the years

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:17 PM)

Defensively, Chris Piccirili and Remington Pope can come into the game and help us out this year.

Cody (Richmond VA)

have you changed anything in practice to help you get off to a quick start in games?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:19 PM)

One of the changes this year with practice is that we practice on tuesday and thursday in the morning

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:19 PM)

I think we've changed our mentality more so than actual drills. We're more focused throughout the week, rather than just the day or two leading up to a game.

Cunning-Question (Sullivan Hall)

What kind of sticks do you use? Do you string them yourselves?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:21 PM)

I've always used the Eclipse. I used to string my own sticks, but Joe Payne works wonders.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:21 PM)

I use a proton power and i cant string them the way i want them to throw. Will Casertano strings my sticks

Steve (Weinberg)

I imagine with the physicality of the game, you have to keep your bodies in great shape. Describe your workout routines.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:23 PM)

in the fall we workout almost everyday, during the season we lift only two days a week and worry more about stretching

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:23 PM)

Our fall workouts are definitely tougher. Throughout the season, we try to maintain what we built up in the fall.

BK (Pizzi's Pizza Palace)

Kevin, Dan, I'm a huge fan! A question for both of you: Kevin: What's practice like now that I'm not there, uh I mean, Karalunas is not there to shred you every day?? Dan: If you had to sum it up in one word, what is it that makes you just so darn approachable?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:25 PM)

haha wats up BK, its alot easier now that i dont have to worry about you but at the same time I miss smoking you

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:26 PM)

Classic... " I'm not hot, I'm not ugly...I'm ...approachable " It's that happy medium.

Dom and Josh (Nova!)

How will you guys keep up the offensive firepower against the top tier teams?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:27 PM)

with picks, staying calm and taking good high percentage shots

Bill (Emmaus, Pa)

Dan, how much does being in a tight game like Bucknell put pressure on you as the goalie?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:29 PM)

It helps that I've been in situations like that before. There's some pressure, but I try to help my teammates by keeping them focused which helps me calm any nerves.

Nova Alum (Malvern, PA)

You guys must be excited to have the chance to play in front of the home crowd for the Big East Tourney. Should be a ton of alumni support and plenty of sundresses in the stands for the regular season finale.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:31 PM)

we are pumped to have the first big east tourney at villanova, going to be an amazing weekend

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:31 PM)

Home field will help. Its going to be an awesome weekend.

Rick Ross (wallkill)

Hi guys, rank these in order of tastiness. cheeseburger, ice cream, pizza

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:32 PM)

cheeseburger ice cream pizza

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:32 PM)

cheeseburger, ice cream, pizza

Wild Cat (the exchange)

This one is for Cunningham :What is the determining factor on whether to run a flat or a L shaped fast break? Why? And how do you communicate to let your other attackmen know so quickly?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:34 PM)

mostly if its off a face off I will yell out flat break this way it will give our face off men more space to feed or shoot. Any other face break I like the L shape so i can be the point man and the feeder

Chris Nolfi (City of Brotherly Love)

What made you choose Nova? I mean I know it's such a great school but there had to be a reason.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:36 PM)

My dad went here

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:37 PM)

I liked the coaching staff on my visits, and got along with the then-current members.

SHEMP (The Nation)

Whos the worst DJ on the team?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:38 PM)

Jlo because he changes the music every two seconds

Jimbo (Syracuse, NY)

Toughest place to play as a visiting team?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:40 PM)

McDonagh has questionable taste

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:40 PM)

Drexel's fans can be pretty ruthless.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:41 PM)

the Schedule we play every away game is going to be a test...one game that comes to mind was hofstra my freshman year

Zach (Bmore)

With pace-of play being a constant discussion, what are your thoughts since you play in a motion style, fast moving offense, but one that is effective in six-v-six play? Generally do you think ita??s not as big of a deal as people make it to be?You were a basketball player, a point guard, who now does a lot of the same stuff on a lacrosse field? How big of a part of your game is that experience, and do you think more players would benefit from having some basketball experience on their resumes?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:44 PM)

Our offense is very affective, being a basketball player in this offense helps because it is easier to understand the movement of people and how to read picks. I use my basketball iq on the field everyday

Tony (Philadelphia)

What do you think of VILLAFLOWVA

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:46 PM)

we have a bunch of flow on the team, the best has to be nicky d

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:46 PM)

Kev O'neil and John LoCasio represent the sophomore class well

Double R (the annex)

whats it like to be the kings of nova nation?

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:47 PM)

feels good to have a bunch of people and fans to come to our games

Double R (the annex)

do you have any pointers for the split dodge?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:48 PM)

I'm more of a face-dodger

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:49 PM)

Make sure you protect your stick

Matt Kinnear
  (1:49 PM)

I'll ask one more question of Kevin and Dan. Huge thanks to them and the 'Nova staff for having them aboard...

Matt Kinnear
  (1:50 PM)

What do you guys need to do to get a W against Delaware this weekend?

Dan Gutierrez
  (1:51 PM)

Offense is their strength so our D is going to have to have a big day.

Kevin Cunningham
  (1:51 PM)

we need to come out firing and aggressive again on offense and move the ball. Delaware is a hungry team so Gutz will hold it down on defense and get the offense chances

Matt Kinnear
  (1:52 PM)

Thanks everyone for participating. Thanks Kevin and Dan for being good sports. Catch them against Delaware this weekend. We'll have live coverage on InsideLacrosse.com.
