Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (1:59 PM)

Hello gang. Welcome to the BRSiR. Here's the link to our Turn 4 page today, four "fireball burning" guestions we answer about Daytona. http://tinyurl.com/7kpon2t

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Ground rules chatters. Try to keep your questions short and you'll have a better chance of me answering them. Also, using a stupid fake name will not help you get your question posted.

Ron (Smithville)

In spite of all the Daytona hype, the pack racing produced way less passing than the tandems and the final 39 laps and most of the race were processional so do you think NASCAR needs to rethink some of those changes?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

No, I think fans liked it for the most part. Even though the pairs racing causes more passing, fans don't see it as legit.

Tim (Clarksville,In.)

how many drivers will have their phones in the car this week?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Good question. Probably a few, but let's hope they don't feel the urge to use them on a restart.

Teri (St. Paul)

In light of the JPM VS. The Jet Dryer, do you think there has been any consideration given to not having them on track at all while the race is in progress? What if something like that happened near where fans are seated?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

No Teri. Frankly, I don't think you'll ever see that happen again. I don't know anyone who has ever seen that. It was a fluke.

Jason (Hollywood, FL)

Hi Terry, some of your media friends tweeted that some gates at Daytona were unmanned Monday allowing for free access to non-ticket holders. Did you see that too?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

No, but maybe a few folks got a freebie of one heck of show.

tom (green bay,wi.)

when's the fine coming for 48 johnson/knaus?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

Haven't heard yet, but I'll be surprised if they don't suspend Chad. Any alteration to the body is a big deal to NASCAR.

Ted (Conway, Ma)

I'm sick of big crashes. Don't you think Phoenix will be refreshing? Will the Roush cars dominate thre too?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Phx will be totally different. I'm sure the Roush cars will be good, but they won't dominate. What happens in Daytona stays in Daytona.

Mack (from the chats) (Wilmington DE)

Good afternoon TB! In honor of Leap Day, which Nationwide or Truck Series driver is most likely to make "The Leap" to Cup and succeed in the next few years?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I think Buescher has a future in Cup, as does Austin Dillon. In trucks, Ty Dillon will get there and so will Joey Coulter at some point.

Mack (from the chats) (Wilmington DE)

Is Dodge happy only supporting 1 major team in Cup? Any chance they'll try to get someone else in the future?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

The Dodge folks say no. They're good with one team, but you never say never.

Cory (Geneva, IL)

To get it out of the way, what is your official take on the Biffle vs. the Brake debate?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Here's my take on the end of the race. Biff was being a great teammate to Matt. He wasn't going to pull out of line with Jr. because Jr. probably would have beaten both of them if he did. So Biff felt it was better to finish 2nd to Matt than have both of them lose to Jr. I know Biff didn't say that, but that's how I saw it.

JAMMER (Utah)

I wish NASCAR would go back to the tandems. I have talked with a ton of fans and they agree that the pack racing this year was bad.

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

I'm sure some people feel that way, but if we took a poll, I'm betting most people still prefer what they saw Monday night to pairs racing.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I know some of the drivers said the outside lane stopped working after the fire, but I didn't really see it working before the fire.

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

Good point Marc. The outside line just couldn't pull up they way we've seen in the past. I think part of the problem was the engines overheated faster on the outside line.

Mack (from the chats) (Wilmington DE)

Years back I heard that the only way to "solve" the issues at Daytona and Talladega would be to rebuild them with less banking. ANY chance ISC does that?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Not a chance in you know where.

Ron (Rittman)

Another plate race and no car flips over. I guess the fans were correct that the wing was causing the flips.

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

It didn't work out so well for Gordon in the Shootout.

Matt R. (Pittsburgh)

Any word on what has to happen to the damaged part of the track before the July race?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Nothing major. It's really not that bad folks.

Jesse (Huntersville, NC)

Will we see the same pack racing at "Dega as we say at Daytona?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Something similar if they keep this rules package, but you'll see a lot more 3-wide racing at Dega because it's so much wider.

Pete (Harbor City, MI)

All the HMS cars including Stewert , Kurt and Danica had bad races so do you think when #88 is the best of the HMS cars that they have alot of work to do? Thanks.

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

No, just a flukle deal with JJ and DP wrecking early and JG having a mechanical problem.

Jesse (Huntersville, NC)

Will NASCAR schedule a race for Monday night now?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

That's a great question Jesse. Over 36 million people tuned in. They have to look at that and think, maybe this isn't such a bad idea. I could see this happening in the future for some events in the summer when school's out.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I don't like pack racing, I don't like tandum racing. The first restrictor plate Daytona 500 was 24 years ago, I can't believe nobody has found something better in that time.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Feel free to make a suggestion.

Mack (from the chats) (Wilmington DE)

How do you pronounce your last name--does it rhyme with "Count" or with "Front"?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Front, like famous Steelers CB Mel Blount.

Wally (Tampa)

After Whitt dumped Danica in the NW race she was dropping F bombs on the radio and cursing her #88 teammate and I'd like to know if you think she needs to see a sports psychologist?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

I would think she would need to see a sports psychologist if she didn't do that after what happened.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think Sadler should have apologized to Danica, Kurt and David Ragan too? Ragan is very level headed and he called Sadler "bonehead'...........just sayin'

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

It's just the zaniness of plate racing Chris. Stuff happens.

Jason Mobley (cupertino)

With brads big tweet up do you see nascar doing a halfway break for drivers to tweet

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Ha! Hlftime tweets. I like it. But no, ain't happening.

Adam (Galax, VA)

Considering all of the delays, I thought the race was pretty good. What do you think?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

As I wrote, it definitely was memorable. People remember things that are unusual, and this was the most unusual Daytiona 500 ever.

Ned (NC)

on the youtube vid of Rowdy running across the track after his bathroom break all the fans are cheering so did Rowdy's amazing shootout victory over Stewart convert the haters to fans?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

No, they just loved him taking a potty break.

Greg (North Carolina)

Danica has now wrecked in 12 of 27 races, correct? Circumstances outside her control or bad driving?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

A little of both. But I wouldn't read too much into what happened at Daytona. Heck, almost everyone wrecked at some point.

Abe (MO)

Who are in your top five at Phoenix?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

Edwards, Gordon, Biffle, Earnhardt and Harvick.

Willy (Ca.)

With the reconfigured Phoenix do you think we will see a repeat of Phoenix spring when Rowdy and Gordon had that amazing battle for the win?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

No. Even if it didn't change, the odds of repeating that are remote. But you still could see a great finish between a couple of guys, and Kyle or Jeff might be one of them.

Ted (Conway, MA)

I liked that little piece where JPM said he knew there was going to be a big fire, like it was no big deal...A brave man!

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

He's a fortunate man, as was the guy in the jet dryer, to escape without any serious injury or burns.

Austin (Kentucky)

It seemed like there was a lot more passing in the Shooout than the 500. Did conditions change or were the drivers just being far more agressive in a shorter race?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Definitely more aggressive in the Shootout when no points are on the line, along with not near as much money.

Greg (North Carolina)

Do you think Kurt Busch hugging Dr. Jerry Punch was a little over the top?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

What's wrong with a little hug every now and then?

Joe (Circle City)

Six race suspension for Knaus and the Car Chief - WOWZER!

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Holy moly. Even I didn't expect that much. That's a kick in the teeth. They even suspended Ron Malec, who would have been on the pit box for Chad. And 25 points is enormous in this system.

Les (Westerville, Ohio)

I really respect your ESPN colleague Brad Daugherty for saying that Kesolawski tweeting during the race was "inappropriate" and would like to know if you think his sponsors and team should penalize him especially after NASCAR fined him at Homestead?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

I love Brad D and I like that he takes a stand on issues. But I think way too much is being made out of this. Drivers have put stuff in their cars for years, combs, cigarettes, heck, even a monkey. As for the sponsors, how coud you not love it when Brad K's twitter followers doubled to more than 200,000.

matt (rochester, ny)

25 driver points is HUGE in this system. JJ has an enormous hole to dig out of. He is what -23 points in the standings? WOW!!

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

It's big, but the 48 team will dig out of it. I think this says NASCAR has had it with Chad pushing the envelope.

The Real me (CT)

A Monkey?!?!? Was it Smoke??

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

No, but Smoke did own a monkey once named Mojo. It was Tim Flock back in the 1950s. The monkey was named Jocko Flocko. They actually won a race together.

Rupert (UT. )

Hendrick said he will appeal but isn't that pointless and does that allow Knaus to cc while they are waiting on the appeal?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I believe it does. I'm sure Rick hopes an appeal will at least reduce the penalty some. It has happened, but I doubt it will happen here. Chad's history really hurts him.

Saul (Sacramento)

My wife walks in the bedroom just before the last restart and she said to me. Do you realize you have been in here since 4 o?clock. I think I memorize the Diet Mountain Dew Commercial. What you think of the commercial.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

I just get tired of seeing the same commercials over and over, but I guess that's kind of the point for the advertisers.

matt (rochester, ny)

has a monkey ever lost its life in a race car? When I say monkey I mean a real monkey...

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

No, after a few races, Jocko started getting scared and jumpy in the car, so NASCAR said that's it from non-humans in the car.

Von (Dallas)

Huge Kyle Busch fan and wondered what you thought of Rowdy's saves and win during the Shootout?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Without question, the first save was the best I've ever seen in my career. Absolutely miraculous.

Von (Dallas)

Who do you predict wins a cup race first this year: Rowdy or Denny?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Good question, but I'll go with Kyle. I think both of them will win.

Teri (Burbank)

Can we just give a shout out to Matt Kenseth? He won the 500 and not a single person has mentioned his name. Way to go Matt!

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

An excellent point Teri, and it shows how Matt always flies under the radar because he's a quiet guy. But he's one heck of a race car driver.

Bob (Wahi)

Is Dale Jr going to win this year

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

I'll say yes and I think it will happen soon.

Sandy (NY)

Been reading a rumor online about Smoke retiring at the end of the year. You hear anything? I just don't see it happening for a long time.

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Not gonna happen.

Irv (Tremont City, IN)

Sorry to ask this but when the #88 is the best finishing of the HMS cars, isn't that team in deep trouble?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Absolutelty not. Don't read too much into Daytona. It doesn't really apply to what happens anywhere else except Dega. Right now the biggest prob for Hendrick is the whopping penalty on the 48.

Kristin (New York City)

What do you think of having a road course as part of the Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

I'm 100 percent in favor of it. The champ should have to compete on a road course in the playoff. I'd love to see them move Sonoma into the Chase.

Caylee (CT)

Now that Danica has gotten her Cup debut out of the way, can we get back to the drivers who actually can win getting articles?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Danica still will get her share because more people read about her than almost anything else we do.

Saul (Sacramento)

A shout out for Landon Cassill and the underfunded teams. It was great to see a guy like Cassill getting some media attention during the red flag. I hope he does well.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

And one more rain shower and Dave Blaney would have been the Daytona 500 winner.

Jeff (SC)

6 races is a lot of race for Knaus. -23 points for Jimmy. Can that be made up easily?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Not easily. but they'll do it. It's the first race of the year. If it happened in the 20th race of the year, it would be a lot worse.

Ron (Rittman)

Looks like JJ will need to get some wins to at least take the wildcard to get into the Chase.

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

He'll get some wins, but he has plenty of time to make up the points and get to 10th in the standings.

Jimmy (Candor, NY)

You seem a bit testy with the ground rules today lol. My question is can Knaus still work at the shop during the suspension? Or is it just a suspension from the track?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Not testy, you want chatter to act like grown ups. The suspension only applies to the track.

Ricky (Seattle)

Do u think they can put a race in washington state

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

As a WA resident, I hope so. They have tried _ first in Marysville north of Seattle and second in Port Orchard, across the Sound from Tacoma. But ISC wants the tracks to get built with public money. That's not going to happen anywhere these days. Washinton and Seattle couldn't even get the public money to keep the Sonics, much less build a race track.

Saul (Sacramento)

Can the 48 CC be at the track during the race?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

Not when he suspended, but he can while they appeal the suspension.

Timmy (Virginia Beach)

How can Mr. Hendrick talk about integrity, honor and respect when he keeps someone like Knaus at HMS?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Chad's not doing anything different from all the great CCs in NASCAR history. You push it as far as you can until you go over the limit. Chad is really a innovative genuis, but he threw the dice one too many times with this one.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Was Danicas debut about the most unlucky of any driver you can remember? 3 wrecks, non of her own doing. She did run in the top 10 for 38 of 49 laps in Nationwide and was 9th when she got wrecked in the duel. Should she be encouraged by how well she did when she wasnt getting wrecked by others?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Those are excellent points Chris. Her Daytona week was a double-edged sword. She won a NW pole, raced near the front at times, but couldn't stay out of trouble It's all part of the learning process.

Kristin (New York City)

Do you think Rockingham would be a good mix for Sprint Cup racing? Or at least Nationwide?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

NW yes, but Cup isn't going back to the Rock any time soon.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

I'm out folks. Today lived up to the BRSiR standards by all of you. Have a great week. Peace.
