Hey gang. Welcome to the BRSiR. Here's the link to today's Turn 4 questions that the ESPN.com boys answered. Does Smoke have Grubby regrets? Should Martin go for it?. Is this Biff's year?. And the shocker of 2012 so far. Check it out. http://tinyurl.com/7d6q2xc
I see Kyle isn't as dominating in NW when he doesn't have JGR cars.
A fair point Ron, but it's only two races. Let's wait and see. What I love if this is the first time in 17 years the Cup regulars are winless in the first 2 NW/Busch Series races.
Jr has had a decent start. For all of Jr nation, is he going to finally snap that losing streak this season? And where?
Ah, the first Jr. question. Yes, he'll win somewhere. I'll say Richmond.
Hi Terry, thanks for hosting the chat. How do you feel about former Sprint Cup regular Elliot Sadler picking up the win in Nationwide competition last week?
I love it. Anytime a NW regular wins a NW event I celebrate. What was odd was Elliott having a meeting with RC afterward and them backing out of thr 5-race deal in the MWR 55 car in Cup. Didn't Elliott check with Childress first before agreeing to do it?
Hi Terry, since Rowdy and Dave didn't have a race winning car at Phoenix do you think Rowdy roughed up Harvick just enough to help his teammate Denny get the win?
No. You guys have too many conspiracy theories.
Shouldn't the 48 have more points than what he shows, since the ruling is under appeal? Why does ESPN and other websites do this?
The points are correct unless the ruling is reversed. Which, by the way, is highly unlikely.
Is this year Dale Jr.'s breakout year and best chance to win the chase?
Good year. Yes. Win the Chase. No.
I haven't heard any Kurt radio chatter. Is he being good?
Like a boy scout in a circle on nuns.
Darian Grubb aside, how important was it for the #11 team to get a jump start on the TRD motor last season? Looks like JGR as a whole has stepped up thus far.
They have. And that's a good point. Five Toyotas were in the top 10 at Phoenix. That's a good omen for the new TRD engine arrangement.
Terry: I am thrilled with Biffle's start. Is he a legit shot to win on Sunday in Vegas?
Biff has a shot. He was one of our Turn 4 questions about whether he finally can win a title. I think history is against him on that. Only one driver in the last 28 years (Jarrett in 1999) won his first Cup title after he turned 40.
How surprised were you about Penske giving Dodge the boot, and where does Dodge go from here?
That was my shocker of the season so far. It left Dodge in the lurch. Now Dodge is unveiling is 2013 car this weekend, sort of like a bride showing off her wedding dress before she has a groom. This is a tough deal for Dodge. They need a team with a an engine program or they'll have to start their own, a very expensive proposition.
Who do you like for the Nationwide/Cup races at Vegas?
I hope it's another NW regular in Victory Lane like Stenhouse or Sadler, but that's not likely. By the way, Vegas is the place where Danica had the best finish in history for a woman in a NASCAR event _ 4th last year.
Hi Terry, I read that Jr. didn't like the tire Goodyear had at Phoenix and wondered why they don't build tires that Jr. is more comfortable with?
Funny Tyler. You want the Junior Goodyear tire. Not happening.
Do Rowdy and Kurt get the hometown fan support at Vegas the way Denny does at Richmond?
Not as much, but they do get some.
I know it won't last all year, but how about my boy Bobby Labonte sitting in a chase spot at 11th. The Toyota camp has started off 2012 on the right foot.
They have and it s good for a one-car team like JTG Daugherty Racing to get off to a strong start.
Do you think Kurt Busch will stay with the 51 if he wins a race this year?
Not a chance.
Hi Terry, how angry is Kyle that his old 18 NW car is owning him so far this year? You know he cares more about the NW series than the Cup series.
No, he doesn't. And cutting back on NW is the best thing he could do if he hopes to win a Cup title.
WIth the Penske switch to Dodge obviously the development will stop and I wondered if you think that will hurt the Penske's later in the season?
That's a great questions Gene. And yes, I do think it could hurt them. Everyone is saying the right things, but lame-duck situations rarely turn out well in NASCAR.
If Knaus ends up suspended, who would be the crew cheif for the 48 in the races? McGrew?
Not McGrew. He is busy working with development driver Chase Elliott. It probably will be lead engineer Greg Ives. It would have been Ron Malec, but he also is part of the suspension.
Do you think that Danica has the ability to conquer a loose race car?How will she handle being outshone by Whitt? Apparently her diva has already surfaced.
DP is good on on the intermediate ovals, so she could have a good finish this weekend at Vegas. She's going to struggle for now on the short tracks while she learns to handle the car when it's loose.
Lots of complaining on twitter by a few media types regarding Danica not speaking after the race, but she did take to twitter. Plus, when you finish 21st and 3 laps down, what can say? Just let her breathe a little bit and race.
Danica has to realize reporters want to talk to here no matter where she finishes. Readers and viewers want to know. It's part of the drill for her.
Do you think Danica was right to scold Cole Whitt about Daytona the way she did? Word is she talked down to him like he was a 3 year old. Does this bode well for team chemistry at JRM. Does it hurt her rep? Noone likes a diva, especially one that never wins
She got mad because she got wrecked. That's happens every week. They talked it out. Too much is being made of it.
While JGR is putting 3 solid cars on the track does it seem like RCR is only capable of putting 1 competitive car out there?
Way too early to make that call. And Burton was running well before mechanical problems.
If Sadler will not be in the 55 for those five races who is the most likely candidate for that seat besides Mark Martin? Brian Vickers perhaps?
That would be my pick, but I'm think Mikey would have already gone down that road if that's what he wanted to do.
So 2 weeks in and Kahne wrecked twice, tell me the curse of the 25 car isnt real....
Put your voodoo doll away Les.
The other thing I'd point out is that with twitter, you don't really need to speak directly to the media, you can get your points across speaking directly to your fans.
Not the same Troy. Far fewer people are getting the message, and it isn't objective if it's only coming from the driver.
It seems the soap opera element in NASCAR is out today. Look, here's the drill: 1) Dale Jr will win a race in the future. Unless he doesn't. 2) Danica is a novelty thus far with deep sponsor pockets. She will attract attention. 3) It's only two races. Patience is a virtue.
Keith, from now until the end of time, Jr. and DP will be topics of conversation. It is what it is.
Specifically, what was the "confidence" that Stewart lost in Darien Grubb? technical, leadership, work ethic?
No one has said, but I think Tony just felt they were clicking togetrher and weren't on the same page. Obviously, that changed in the Chase, but Tony had made up his mind.
Do you think there's any chance we'll see Kenny Wallace filling out the rest of the races in MWR's #55? He and Michael are friends and there's no manufacturer concerns to worry about.
Might be. Not a bad idea.
The "Bakersfield Basher" looked really strong on Sunday, do you think he contends for a win this week?
The closer will be in the hunt.
Hi Terry, I see that Jeffrey Earnhardt is entered in a Ford for the Nationwide race at Bristol and was curious why Dale Jr. doesn't help his son Jeffrey get a car at JRM?
That's not his son. It's his nephew.
danica finshed 4th cuz of fuel mileage. get it right blount.
So. She still finished fourth. Denny won Sunday because of fuel mileage. And she is good on high-banked, high speed ovals.
who will finish better saturday? johanna long or danica?
I'll go with DP on that one.
At what point in his career are experts gonna start saying Junior will never win again in Sprint Cup?
When he washed up, which he isn't. The man was 7th in the Chase last year.
What's the overall garage consensus thus far on EFI? I know Tony Stewart can't be pleased, and he's been a master at fuel conservation.
It's still a learning process. I did a blog on it that will be up today. How far they can go still is a guessing game, as it was with carburetors. But that's not a bad thing. It adds drama, as it did Sunday.
Terry, from the races I have watched, I feel Cole Whitt is a calm 20 yr. old driver with a pleasant demeanor, good listener with Pops expertise & will progressively get better also will surprise many. Yes, he did get into Danica but without any experience at Daytona, he did well
I agree Geri. Cole has loads of talent and he's a good listener. Being with Pops will help him tremendously. Cole has a bright future. He also is a tiny ginger.
top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for Vegas
Edwards, JJ, Hamlin, Kenseth. KyBu. Darkhorse _ Ambrose.
Mich. in June will be Junior's 4 year losing streak anniversary and I was wondering if every other driver in the garage would have been fired with those stats?
Not when they are making tons of money for the team, bringing in huge sponsorship dollars, the way Jr. is for Hendrick Motorsports. And who fires a driver who finished 7th in the Chase? Man, the Jr haters are everywhere today.
Is Mr Hendrick worried about the start to the season for his teams? For all the talk of all 4 getting in the chase and one winning the title, HMS has been a dud this year so far. They haven't exactly come strong out of the gate
A dud? Jr. was second and almost won the Daytona 500. JJ was fourth at Phoenix and had a chance to win before a lug nut problem on pit road. It's just two races. The Hendrick boys are fine.
Hey Terry, do you expect a dust up between Newman and Edwards after the threats Newman mad after Phoenix?
Maybe, and if it happens, it's wrong on Newman's part. Carl just got loose down low in the turn and slid up the track. It wasn't intentional.
don't know if this has been announced already, but when Austin Dillon moves up to Cup next year, will he be driving the #3 or #33?
It hasn't been announced, but I expect he will drive the 3. However, I don't expect him to move up until 2014.
Everyone is talking about the great pairing of Grubb/Hamlin...on the other end of the spectrum is there any new pairing this year that you are a little worried about thru the first 2 races?
No, but a good pairing people are overlooking is Logano and Jason Ratcliff.
If Burton has another bad year will RCR move Austin up in 2013?
Not for Burton. He signed a new multi-year contract last year. But RCR will go back to four cars when they have the sponsorship for it. Richard doesn't want to rush Austin to Cup. I think he wants to give him two season in NW.
How can Logano/Ratcliff be better than Logano/Zippy when one is a rookie CC in cup and the other is a former champion?
Chemistry. Sometimes guys just need a change. And sometimes the personalities just dont mesh. That was the case with Joey and Zippy.
Do you think Coach and JD are proud of Rowdy for the way he has handled himself and raced so far this season?
Sure, but it's two races. Let's not award him the medal of honor just yet.
Is it just me, or does it seem like the 48 still has issues with the pit crew? Car was running great in the race and pits during caution. Comes out later than others and has to return two more times before the next green flag.
That's an excellent question Glenn. I'm not sure this whole 'team" concept pit crew thing with the 48 and 88 is working the way they hoped it would.
Is Kyle Busch the Lebron James of NASCAR? Great in the regular season but always chokes in the playoffs?
Maybe, but that could change for both of the them this year.
Do you think Danica Patrick should stay in the Nationwide Series a couple of years before moving to Sprint Cup?
No. She has raced two-part NW seasons already and will have the full-season this year. She has lots of racing experience. It's time to put up or shut up this year. And she did improve dramatically last year.
Did you get a good look at the #48 C Posts? Was it obvious that Knaus was trying to pull something radical off on NASCAR?
I didn't, but it wouldn't have been obvious to me if I had an electron microscope.
Do you think NASCAR heard something in the offseason about JJ's car from last year and that is why they immediately said it didn't pass it's 1st inspection this year?
That's what the conspiracy theorists say. Even Hamlin said at Phoenix that NASCAR doesn't like having the wool pulled over its eyes, which may have hapened at Dega last year. So they had "heavy eyes" (his words) for the 48 at Daytona.
It would sure be interesting to see what Smokey Yunick could pull off in NASCAR, circa 2012.
Probably not as much as you think Rob because there is so little room now to make changes to the cars compared to Smokey's heyday.
Terry, do you think that someone in the garage reported to an official in NASCAR about the 48 car? Sounds suspicious, your thoughts?
No. NASCAR officials know better than to listen to other teams complaining about a car.
Gotta run folks. Great chat today with awesome questions. Have a great week. Peace.
