OK, here we go with the chat. If you do not get your questioned answered just hit me on up twitter @espnstrickland
Crowded back field this coming season? Do you see the RB position by committee be an asset or liability? I see the merit in both situations but I wonder if 3-stud backs can overshadow each other and making it hard to really have a dominate run game. Tim will tell!
It is going to be a good thing because the backs all do different things well. I really like Bergeron and think he is emerging as a contender to be the featured back. Gray is going to get a shot at wild formation. Also they look to be throwing more passes to the backs out of the backfield so Texas can get them the ball that way as well. I think having three is no problem for this year at least
Who will be the Longhorns Running Backs in 2012?
Gray, Brown and Bergeron
The whole Texas organization seems to have the right attitude and focus right now. If this carries over into the season I could see Texas being the favorite for the big 12. You? If Brandon Moore has been so dominant than why is he going up against the second team a lot?
OU is probably still the favorite because Landry is back. But Texas is a contender that is for sure. As far as Brandon, he is just not quite sure where to go hen just yet so they are trying to work him in and teach him a few things. Plus Desmond Jackson is looking pretty good next to Dorsey. Still I think by the fall Moore will be the guy at d tackle
What is your gut feeling on Smythe's decision? With losing another Safety this year, should we be more aggresive towards recruiting this position....your thoughts?
Going to be hard to go against Stanford because they use the tight end so well. Twenty of the 37 TD passes last year were to tight ends. Of course, Luck was throwing those passes. And now he is gone.Smythe is going to make a decision here in the next couple of days and it is going to be very hard to say no to Texas.AS for the safeties, it is crazy. Texas has to get more because they are so thin but they seem to want to wait on out of state guys and not get the in state guys.
Hey Carter, I read that TE Smythe is going to announce this week; what's the word on his most likely pick? Also wanted to know about this Morgan kid at TE I see he's considering, is Texas interested in him?
Morgan is a decent tight end and has received some interest from Nebraska, Ohio University and other midwest schools. I think Texas prefers Smythe and then Gow. So I am not sure they will go to Morgan. They do want two TEs and feel like with RSJ they have one so look for them to get Smythe and if they miss on him go hard after Gow.
Do you think Texas baskitball could win the big 12 next year? .
No because I think J'Covan could leave and Kabongo could leave as well. Now they will get Ridley - maybe - and he is a good inside player. But he is still very young. He has only played hoops for about three or four years. As for J'Covan I am just not sure there is much upside to him staying unless he really wants his degree. He is going to make money playing basketball overseas and might want to get that career starter. His stock has never been higher and will never get that much higher. So that is why I think he might leave. Not sure Kabongo is going to stay because that is a the trend with the guys who come from Coach Russell's program in Canada.
How dominant do you think our backfield will be in two years? (Swoopes, Brown, Gray) Could this go down as one of best backfields in Texas history?
If Swoopes is ready to lay by then. Look at it this way - in two years Connor will still be around and he might be the starter. If that is the case then Swoopes will be in his redshirt year. He may never take snaps with Brown or Bergeron. He might with Gray.
What's the status with Justing Manning? He seems to be a Sooner lean. If he goes who do we go after then?
Well his brother played at OU and that makes it tough for Texas to get him. Now OU was late on an offer so that may play in Texas' favor. If they miss on Manning take a look at tGolden the commit at TAMU. He is a guy Texas likes and will stay after till he end. Prevot is a DL guy that Texas really wants but he is an end. Vincent Taylor is another end Texas is looking at.
If participation in the Olympics prevents Marquise Goodwin from emerging as a starter, who would be the 3rd receiver?
Goodwill be the starter. Now as far as guys who could back him up, Daje Johnson is a guy that can fit in there. Kendall Sanders might be another one to look at
Is it a mistake to redshirt Conner Brewer? If David Ash gets hurt, Texas would be completely dependent on McCoy. This seems dumb.
Well just because they throw a redshirt on him doesn't mean they can't pull it off. I would guess he is going to be on what is called Red alert. Meaning they want him to redshirt but want him to be ready to play as well.
How soon will DeMarco Cobbs return? Is there a big drop off if Jackson remains the starter?
Cobbs has a neck injury so that is up in the air. Neck injuries are touchy. But he should be OK to go in the fall. At least there has been no indication that he will not be. Tevin is a good player. I think Cobbs is the better athlete of the two but he is proving to be injury prone, even though this last one did not occur on the field.
Who emerges as the starting TE? Is this a position filled by a committee?
M.M. McFarland is really coming on strong. D.J. Grant looks better. But he is a guy that has had injury issues. Darius Terrell has looked good too. Those three will all play the spot.
which will have a bigger impact on the defense?.. brandon moore or steve edmond
Very tough question. I am going with Edmond because he is so crucial to the defensive success Texas is OK at d line if Moore is not in the lineup. But if Edmond is out they are left with a huge hole in the middle of the defense. Got a story on Edmond coming to the site for tomorrow Be sure to check it out at hornsnation.com
So much for the aggies move to the sec helping their recruiting. UT once again absolutely dominating in state recruiting. What's your take?
Not exactly accurate. The Aggies are cleaning up in recruiting. They have seven ESPN 150 watch list guys, including two wide receivers, a quarterback and two DTs. Texas would like to have one of those DTs, Isaiah Golden.
Will Justin Manning be a longhron? Any other prospect could announce his commit early?
It is going to be hard to steer him away from OU. And the Smythe announcement should come at the end of the week. Manning has said he is not going to announce until the end of his senior season.
Hey Carter. Love your work. If Texas Bball misses the tourney, should Deloss think about a change? Rick Barnes has done a tremendous job but 13 season and one Final Four--and we can credit some guy name Terrence Jarord Ford for that. He is a great recruiter but the teams are not living up to the potential. I think Texas has the resources to get someone like Brad Stevens. Thanks.
I really like Brad Stevens. But he is not coming to Texas anytime soon because Barnes is not leaving anytime soon. Yes it is very frustrating for fans to see one and done guys at UT. Barnes needs to build a core of young guys and establish something. But the guys has done what other coaches could not, maintain a winning program. At Texas is does not matter if you are in the Final Four. All that matters is that you are respectable in hoops and don;t cause too much trouble. It's not Carolina.
How much will the horns miss Wangmene this week? His minutes will be missed, but is this a big hit to our chance at some wins this week?
Losing him is a huge hit. He is the one guy that can match up with ISU's Royce White. When Wangmene was playing in the KU game his guy, Robinson, was 3 of 10. When Lex got hurt Robinson went 7 of 9 to finish the game. He is a defensive stopper and has great length. Without him it is going to be very hard to beat ISU.
Looks like Texas may get Smythe, think that will happen in the next couple of days? Also, since OL & TE seem to be two of Texas' biggest needs to fill this year, any idea why they haven't seemed to go after Christian Morgan. The guys a beast, plays TE
They might get Smythe. Not a done deal just yet. As for Morgan I talked a little bit about him earlier. He might be a sleeper that Texas' misses on. But right now they are not that interested in him. Gow is the next TE after Smythe.
Is mike davis about to have a breakout season with jaxon shipley? And if so who will be the better WR? Or will he[davis] look the part in practice and be inconsistent in games yet again?
Good question. Davis has been so solid in practice but his issue has never been athleticism. The problem with Davis is he hates contact. And football is a contact sport. He does not do well catching the ball in traffic and is terrible with YAC.Now if he can bulk up a little and feel more confident in his body he might be more willing to go up and grab the ball or catch it in traffic.Shipley is fearless and that is what you have to be. Davis might have learned that watching film but until i see him in full contact I am not a true believer.
Who do u think will start at QB
Ash. I just don't see it unfolding any other way. Brewer is way too far behind. Case is making many of the same mistakes. And Ash is being given the majority of first team snaps.
How important is the success of the OL play going to be this season and how do you think they look now?
OL will be huge because Texas is going to be a run first offense. I think they are much better than they were last year because Cochran and Espinosa are older and bigger. Hopkins gets to move to his more natural position at guard and Hawkins is a solid tackle. Plus the depth is better. Texas can truly go two deep all the way across the line this year unlike last year. That should help them wear teams down.
From the sounds of it davis is playing well so far in practice, will he be the real deal this season with shipley? if so who will do better?
Not totally sold on Davis yet. Want to see him do it in a game. As for other guys who might step up, Cayleb Jones is guy to look to for early action. He has been out at practice watching everything and absorbing the playbook. He could be ready come August.
Where do you see Jake Raulerson playing? He seems to be highly coveted, but too small for a DT, to slow for a DE and undersized for an OT or OG. I thought center seemed to be a good place for him, but there is also Darius James. Are they expecting Raulerson to put on significant size? Do you see James playing guard?
I think he can play either side and might be faster than you think. But he does have the frame where he can put on much more weight and play tackle. Right now i think they see him at end. As for James, he will probably play guard. But that versatility is something schools covet which is why he is so valuable.
If Durham Smythe picks Stanford, who should be Texas' next choice at TE?
Who do u think will be a QB
Ash. See below for explanation.
Brandon Moore apparently looked good in practice. Does that say more about Moore or the quality of the O-line?
Well he is going against Sed Flowers on the second team so that is part of it. But Flowers is pretty decent. Moore is just too strong and quick. I want to see him going against Walters or Hopkins and eventually he will start to do that. But make no mistake he is the real deal at tackle.
over under on Kenny Vaccaro being a 1st rounder.....55%
I'm going to go with late first early second. He has really improved his coverage skills and has always been a hard hitter. It is going to come down to his 40 time at the combine and his workout. If he can go 4.5 or better he is a first round guy in 2013.
Who will be the starting WRs this season? Will Davis keep his starting position all year this sesaon?
Goodwin, Shipley, Davis with some of the young guys sprinkled in here and there. If Davis can continue to work hard in practice he should keep it. That was the issue last year. He slacked off in practice and that is a no-no around Texas these days.
Have Harsin and Diaz impressed you on the recruiting trail this year? It seems as they are choosing the best guys to fit into their schemes, rather than how many stars are sitting by a kid's name. I've noticed a couple 150 guys seem really interested, but haven't been overed yet in favor of lesser ranked recruits at the same position.
I agree with that The only issue is that in two to four years when these guys start playing Harsin and Diaz may not be at Texas and therefore these guys will be playing in another coach's system. So they need to be very careful and try and find the best athletes as well.
I'm not the biggest Aggie basher but why is ATM getting these recruits. I mean nobody wants to play for a losing team and with the move to the SEC I don't see ATM making a bowl for awhile. ATM is on par to be another Vandy in the SEC and they can't get any top recruits. Ok, I guess I am a Aggie basher.
I think it is because Sumlin has something to sell. Listen the guy has been a great OC at OU and then did very well at UH. So offensive guys want to play for him. Now the concern is the two DTs that he has locked up in the state. The game in the SEC is won on the O line and D line. So Sumlin has got to get some more guys in the trenches. I really don;t think Texas has that much to worry about. They are going to lose a guy or two to TAMU every year. But they are not going to lose the main guys they want.
If Ash goes down, I'd rather have McCoy in there over Brewer. If Overstreet does not RS he could move into the backup role, while saving Brewer's eligibility.
True but Texas wants to win right now and I don;t think Jalen is going to give them the best opportunity to do that. I think if Ash goes down they will go with McCoy and if he cannot handle it then Connor comes in.
Mack has stated that his philosophy in regards to red shirting players has changed because if they're that good regardless he is only going to get them for three years so might as well play them now. Do you see any other players from this incoming class getting playing time? Besides, Gray and Brown?
I think you are going to see some of the wide receivers get playing time because Texas is very thin there. Shiro Davis is another one that is going to play early. Duke Thomas is going to see some time as a backup corner. And Hughes has looked good on the offensive line. He may get time if they need some depth there.
So will Jake R be playing DL? It seems like we need more help on the OL in the future.
It is really up in the air there. The thing about him is that he can play both. And i think he is willing to play either or so the coaches will really start to assess that when they can get their hands on him.
Do the Big XII newcomers who will make the most impact next season on offense and defense both reside in Austin (RB-Gray, DTs-Moore or Brown)?
Hmm, you have a good point there. I would even throw Davis in there for Texas. Really Texas had some of the best newcomers in 2011 as well with Cochran, Diggs, Shipley, Brown and Bergeron
Should I expect to be able to Texas on the LHN in Houston next season?
If only I had the answer. All i can say is ESPN really wants all the fans to call their cable companies. The content that LHN is producing is fantastic. It is a sham the fans cannot see it. We post a lot of their videos on hornsnation so you can check those out for now.
If Texas plays well this year and TAMU plays under average in their first year at the SEC, do you see any of the recruits de-commiting and leaning towards Texas?
Right now the only one Texas really wants is Golden. And yep it could happen.
WE all know that Diaz will leave before too long. But do you think he will wait until Texas wins a BCS game, or NCG?
It all depends on what opens when. If there is a good job that Diaz thinks he can be successful in he is not going to pass on that opportunity.
Carter Strickland, in your opinion who looks ready to take the full-time reigns as quarterback of the greatest college football team in the world, the Texas Longhorns? Do you think Mack will go with a 3-headed attack with Bergeon, Gray, and Brown?
Well, Ash is going to be the guy. Whether or not he is ready is an entirely different matter. I think he can be ready and be a respectable quarterback because he has so much talent around him and a very good o line. And yes they are going with the three-headed attack 10-15 touches each for those guys unless someone gets hot.
Is beating ISU enough to get Texas in the dance? What if it is a close loss (overtime)?
They beat ISU and they are in. Although that Drexel loss was a tough one for Horns' fans. But if they can get past ISU for a second time that gives them four wins over tourney teams and it should be enough.
What do you think is the biggest position of need for this Texas team outside of Safety which is obvious. My gut feeling is that we really need a shut down CB, but I might be missing something.
Corner is going to be a concern. Byndom could leave early. And Diggs could leave the year after that. So Texas needs to prepared to fill those spots. Duke Thomas has been very god so far so there is some promise there. But they need to recruit a few guys in the secondary for sure.
Manning returned from Norman very happy this past weekend. Will the Horns turn up the heat on Darius James given a commitment to OU from Manning seems inevitable?
James already committed to Texas. Story at hornsnation.com
