Hello everyone and welcome back to Mavs chat. Big win last night against the Knicks to lead into this one and only back to back to back of the season. So let's get to it.
Conspiracy Theory for Jason Terry: He's taking opportunities only for himself so he can get noticed by another team (that could potentially sign him) because he knows Mark Cuban isn't going to give him the contract he desires. Conspiracy or truth?
Shawn, Shawn, Shawn, Shawn, Shawn..hmmm...Well, I hear ya and you're not the first to bring it up. Listen, Terry wanted an extension before the season, but he knew he wasn't going to get it because Cuban wants to go into the summer with as much cap space as possible and then build up. I'm not sure what's up with Terry. We all know he has supreme confidence in himself, especially in the clutch and I think last week he was upset because if Dirk's not going to take the shot, he feels he should, not Kidd. You know he wants to stay here, but it's no guarantee. Is that eating at him? Maybe.
Hi Jeff. The Dallas Mavericks blew two big leads against my Knicks last night, yet still won the game. If Tyson was still there, they probably wouldn't have blown that lead anyway right? Are the Mavs back to that old team that has great offense but bad defense? Do changes need to be made.
The Mavs blew some pretty big leads with Tyson I seem to remember. Bad defense? The Knicks shot 38 percent, Melo had six points and they scored 85 points. That would go down as pretty good defense. And I might add, Ian Mahinmi had more of an impact on that game than Chandler. That's not to say that Ian is the better player, not hardly, but Chandler did not do much to help the Knicks win that game. He was on the bench during their big comeback in the 4th.
it looks like mark and donnie have chosen not to make another run at the title this season by allowing tyson and deshawn to walk, and by not making any moves this season have they hung their hat that much on landing howard and williams?
Jason, I can't go down the road of saying they chose not to make a run at another title. I think a team with Dirk at his best, and he's been pretty good of late, that plays good D and they've been top 5 almost all year, with the veteran poise for the playoffs, can make a run. They need Delonte West back in a big way. But, who in the West just seems like they could roll through the Mavs at this point. As for the free agents, yes, the idea is to land one or both.
Hey Jeff, do you think the Mavs are giving Roddy more playing time in order to showcase his talents to other teams, or merely because Delonte West is hurt and Jason Terry has been off lately?
Brian, they are giving Roddy more minutes because A) Delonte is hurt and B) they still believe the kid is a dynamic talent and can an impact player as he was last night. He's just now developing as a point guard. They still like him and want him to succeed. If he plays well it will be interesting to see how Rick handles the minutes. They need West's perimeter defense for sure.
Jeff how far do you think we'll go in the playoffs? Time to see if you really do believe in this team
Dirk, man, you better get to Love Field, the team plane is taking off soon for Phoenix. Do I believe in this team? Well, I believe that it can beat any team in the West in a series. I also believe that series against the Spurs, Grizzlies, Thunder, possible the Lakers would be dog fights. Maybe throw the Clippers in there too as they continue to gel. The West is wide open and I think pretty fascinating.
Two part question: 1) Cuban said they aren't making trade calls, but are fielding them. What, if any, deadline trade talks are the Mavs involved in right now? 2) What is the percent chance we see either DWill or D12, or both here next year?
Start with the latter. If D12 gets traded to Jersey here before the deadline on the 15th then it's 0%. If neither player gets traded, get ready for a very interesting first week or two of July. D12 could just walk on up to Brooklyn and sign there and keep DWill with him. I don't know why D12 isn't clamoring for a trade to Chicago. Could you imagine him and DRose? Goodness. As for trades, Mavs can't trade for the big boys and Cuban is not going to make a trade that brings back salary beyond this season, so I see a trade of any significance as very low odds of happening.
How concerned are the Mavs about Marion wearing down? The guy has been guarding everybody.
Scot, Yes he has and doing a great job of it. Before All-Star weekend he said it was wearing him down chasing around those point guards. Last night it was Melo. Carlisle has done a good job of keeping his minutes within reason, around 30. The last two games he's played more around 36, 37. So, yeah, I think it's a bit of a concern. Marion is 33 but he's in great shape. Getting West back will alleviate some of his PG duties, which will be a big help. If Roddy can sustain his role, that will help, too.
When delonte comes back how do you see the guard minutes being split? Does Roddy go back to the bench? I'd hate to see that happen when the guy has been arguably our 3rd best scorer. Do Carter's minutes get cut?
Neil, it's a great question that we'll just have to wait to find out. I think you hit on a very good key at the end: Vince Carter. At 35, he got off to a nice start, but I think he's starting to go the other way. He played only 10 minutes at OKC and took 1 shot. He played 23 minutes last night and was 1 of 8. His shooting has been abysmal. I really don't see how he stays in the starting lineup once West returns. Still, where Roddy's minutes come from will be very intriguing.
with the current roster the mavs have with an old half man half admazing and a confused lamar odom do you think the mavs can content for a title against the likes of a miami heat team playing good basketball
Not really. I don't think this team can hang with a Heat team playing at a high level or Chicago. The Bulls might be the tougher matchup because of Rose. I go back to saying what Dwight Howard played with the Bulls. I mean can you imagine that inside-outside combo. Wow.
Marion is a big part of this Mavericks team, which makes dealing by the deadline unlikely. In your opinion, if 3D becomes a true possibility, is it easier to deal him prior to the TDL or after the season, and why?
You can also use the amnesty clause on Marion and trade Haywood. I think centers are easily tradeable and by then his deal won't be as clunky. If the Mavs trade Marion in the name of cap space during the season, you might see Dirk take a swing at Cuban.
Jeff, why do not mavs run offense through Vince in post? It worked pretty well a while back. Right now, it seems they use Vince just as a 3 point shooter. I think Vince is a great back to basket player an penetrator. Specially when team is in bonus, they should ask Vince to penetrate and create offense. What do you think?
Yeah, he's still getting to the rim a time or two, but it does seem that the post-ups are not happening as frequently. The Mavs have so many shooters that everyone can't be involved all the time. Dirk took 18 shots last night, Roddy took 11, Terry only 8, Kidd 9, Carter did have 8 shots, so he got looks, just didn't hit them..But, you are right, 6 of those 8 shots were 3s and he made 1.
Cracks me up that Amare complained that Dirk travelled, but if you watch his dunk on sportscenter highlights, he travelled on that one
Did he ever. I was cracking up at his footwork. That was awful. A no-call was even worse. Sometimes I think NBA refs just don't call the obvious travel for some reason. I mean it was so obvious.
Jeff, how is it that at this point in the season that people still think that because Stevenson and Chandler were not re-signed that the Mavs have chosent not to make a title run? The center position has a nice rotation and Marion and West are locking down the perimeter pretty well.
Bryan, I agree. I think the core of this team is pretty darn good. I mean how many people at this time last year were clamoring that D-Stevenson, Barea and Chandler were the answer to the Mavs' championship futility. I mean really? That group became special, totally came together under a common goal, Dirk played spectacular basketball, Jet showed up in the playoffs and everyone played their role to perfection and the breaks went their way. I understand Cuban's change in direction financially.
Any guess on when we should expect to see West back on the floor?
2-3 weeks probably.
With the Odom situation, do you really believe he WANTS to be a Mav or is he going through the motions? What's the chances Dallas could find a trade for him, bringing back an expiring deal and still a decent player? Boris Diaw?
Damian, can't believe you are the first to bring up Odom. I don't know what Odom wants. He says he wants to be here. Cuban and Carlisle swear he's on board and knows what's expected. I don't see any chance in dealing him. First off the Mavs aren't going to take back any salary beyond this season, so they would have to trade for an expiring contract and do so with a team that would take back the $2.4 mil owed to Odom next season. I think he's here til the end.
will jason terry re-sign for the minimum?
Well, let me say this, I wouldn't think so. Jet should still be able to command more than that.
