Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (12:59 PM)

Good afternnon, this chat is coming to you live from the pressbox at Geo. M. Steinbrenner III Field, otherwise known as The Boss. Hiroki Kuroda is getting ready to pitch and I'm getting ready to chat. But first Our National Anthem

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will hit the most Home Runs for the New York Yankees in 2012?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:01 PM)

Tough call because you have two strong candidates but I don;t think Granderson is going to repeat his power #s of 2011. I'll go with Teixeira with somewhere between 37-40

Ready for Real Baesball (Yankees Fans Everywhere)

When does the hazing period end for Pineda and people start giving him a chance? Being in camp trimmed his few "extra" pounds, it's still way too early to hype velocity concerns (esp. since I saw he didn't play winter ball unlike last year), and most importantly he is talking to the media now. All the negativity is taking the fun out of spring.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:04 PM)

I'm not feeling you, dude. What negativity? Because on guy wrote something about a scout saying Pineda's v-lo was down? It's not like anyone in the media said Pineda was fat; Pineda himself said he was 10 pounds overweight the day he arrived. and if he had a reputation of not talking to the media, I was not aware of it. He's been fine, although his command of English is not great. but he certainly pleasant and approachable enuf. I think you;re reading too much into some small things of no importance

Jim (Utica, NY)

I don't know a whole lot about Hiroki Kuroda's pitching style. What can you tell us about him?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:04 PM)

Ask me again in two innings. Seriously

Drew ((NY))

What Starting rotation should the Yankees go with to begin the season?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:06 PM)

CC, Kuroda, Nova, Pineda and AJ. Er, I mean Freddy. Or Hughes. Does anyone really care who the No. 5 starter is?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:06 PM)

BREAKING NEWS: Kuroda';s first pitch a strike

Jim (Utica, NY)

How is Joba coming along in his rehab process? When can we expect him on the mound in the Bronx?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:07 PM)

Faster than expected but still not before mid-July

Jim (Utica, NY)

Is it fair to assume that as long as they are healthy Nova and Pineda will have a spot in the rotation and that it is Hughes and Garcia battling it out for the final spot?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:07 PM)

yes, and I don;t care what the manager says about four guys for three spots

Person who walks like an Egyptian (DC) [via mobile]

Which player, so far, has improved, in your opinion, from last year? Do you think Swisher is keyed in for a career year?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:10 PM)

It's really still too early to tell but Russell Martin is in even better shape than he was last year, an indication he is fully healthy from knee and back issues of last year. I know swisher will try very hard to havce a career year because he's playing for a contract. How he responds to this self-imposed pressure could be one of the most intersting stories of the season

Eric (Boston)

What's the best part of spring training that most people don't know about?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:10 PM)

Max's

Chris (Chicago)

In 2011, the Yankees got a huge season out of Granderson after a sub-par 2010. Who do you see as a possible breakout candidate for 2012 that might currently be a little under the radar?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:11 PM)

Really, can anyone on the NY Yankees really be considered under the radar?

Harvey (Long Island, Ny)

What are the Yank's chances of landing Soler? Also, do yo think the Yankee's will go after Andre Either or Justin Upton if they become available via trade? Mason Williams is looking pretty good.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:13 PM)

considering the new budget restrictions, I would say not good on Soler. Trade prospects, of course, are always contingent on where the Yankees are in mid-July and who is available. I'm guessing they will need an OF to replace Swisher in 2013. As for Mason Williams, I was a big fan of Classical Gas

Scott Richter (Panama City, Florida)

The Yankees pitching so far this spring has been horrendous. I think Pineda may be just a younger AJ and cannot handle picthing in the AL east and won't handle the New York pressure very well. What are your toughts on this.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:14 PM)

If you can make those judgments based on one start of two innings each, I commend you

Larry (NY)

Gardner, Cervelli and one of the Duncans for King Felix....who hangs up first?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:14 PM)

I do

David (Jupiter FL)

Hi Wally....Why didnt the Yanks ever give Igawa another shot in the big leagues. With all that money the paid him, they sent him down and never gave him another chance. I understand he under performed but it seemed like there was something personal with making stay in the minors.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:15 PM)

I don;t think it was personla, just a realization they had made a big, big mistake. Not even the yankees will throw away that much money to indulge a grudge

Vic (Gainesville, Fl)

Can A-Rod ever get that clutch hitting back that he briefly showed off in the 2009 postseason?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:16 PM)

That's what the Yankees are wondering. But first, let's see if he can regain his regular-season performance of 2010

xavier (NY)

At what position do you rank Yanks in the AL?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:19 PM)

I think they;re the best team in the AL East, and if you believe, as I do, that the east is the best division in the league, connect the dots

Cameron (Fla)

What do you suppose happens to the "loser" among the starting pitchers competing for the final 3 spots in the rotation? The only one fitted for the bullpen would be Hughes.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:32 PM)

I agree about Hughes. if Freddy's the loser, he probably requests a trade.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:33 PM)

Thanks guys. Got to get back to the game. I get next week off so Andrew Marchand will take over the chat. See you in two weeks
