This time of the year and the tournaments doesn't effect seedings for teams like Syracuse, but it helps everyone with that one last opportunity to get into the tournament. I'll be on Colin Cowherd's radio show at 12:45.
Championship Week, it's great to see teams come out of no where. What I really hope is that the committee really looks at excellence. Teams like Oral Roberts, Middle Tennessee, Valpo have had phenomenal years yet slipped in the tournament.
You should reward people based on the year and greatness. Greatness is not going 8-10 in the conference. South Florida wins 12 games in the Big East and they win a game or two in the conference tournament, they should get in. Joe Maddon Tweeted me yesterday about the Bulls. I say relax Joe, the Bulls will be in!
Since you have seen them in person, Do you really think Murray State will be able to play with schools from the power 6 conferences? Or are they just overrated and get blown out in the first round.
Absolutely. They have an all-American on my team. They rebound well inside. They have great athleticism. They can score. I really like that basketball team. What might hurt them is a team with big size. They will be a big dangerous out. Murray State, Wichita State, Creighton are all great mid-Majors. VCU. Detroit, they're playing their best basketball at the right time.
How far can you see Mizzou going in the big dance with the limited size and depth that they have?
Great analysis Kyle. That could be their dilemma. Think about it, though, teams like UNC, Syracuse will create problems for everyone. But Mizzou has some great players. They're a very dangerous team. They're reallye explosive offensively.
what kind of run you think duke will have?
They could get knocked out early. BUt they're an enigma, they could also march right on. They're not as talented as in the past, that's why Coach K is my coach of the year in the ACC. They could win their fourth straight ACC tournament. They could go either way, make a great run or get bounced.
How far can Temple advance in the tournament and how do you see them stacking up in the Big East in years to come?
Temple is a well coached team. Fran Dunphy is an old school kind of guy. With the win over Duke, they proved they can play with anybody. Fernandez gives them a threat from the perimeter. They play in that topsy turvy A-10 league. In the Big East? That was a great move by the Big East to get them for basketball.
If Kansas loses in the Big 12 championship game, do they deserve to be a #1 seed?
I would unless something else happens. Syracuse, Kentucky, Kansas and I'm leaning toward UNC, unless Duke wins the ACC. Those top three will really have to stumble hard for them to lose a No. 1 seed.
How do you think my team will perform in this years Big Dance? Seeing how my kids have never experienced any atmosphere like this before?
They're a young basketball team. Zeller is a Diaper Dandy. The veteran players will have to be consistent. Jones has to give them solid perimeter play. They've been tested in the Big 10. They beat three top five teams, so why can't they beat some teams in the tournament? They have Sweet 16 potential.
Is there any chance that the Gophers can make the NCAA Tournament if they lose a close game in the Big 10 Championship?
No. I think there's only one way they get in: they have to win the tournament. Starting with Northwestern today.
How do you see the Big Ten tournament playing out? I think it's going to be the most competitve tournament and 4 or 5 different teams could take it.
I'm looking for Ohio State to break through. This is a chance for them to go in with some momentum. I think Sullinger breaks out.
How far do you see the Michigan State Spartans going in the tournament now that Branden Dawson is done for the season?
That's a big loss. Any time you lose a key player in your rotation close to the tournament. But Tom Izzo gets his players to respond in a one and done tournament situation. They'll create havoc for opponents.
Hi Coach Vitale. Who will go further in the tournament? North Carolina or Duke?
I like Carolina. Talent wise, they're as talented as any in America. They have four NBA players in their starting lineup, three lottery picks. They're playing well at the right time. Many people had them as the No. 1 preseason pick and they're playing like it right now.
Is there a team in the country that has improved more from the start of the season than Kansas?
Kansas really got better and better. That's a credit to Bill Self, and that's why I voted for him as my coach of the year. They've got as good of an inside-outside combo as there is in America.
You think Northwestern will make the NCAA tourney or would they be better fit for the NIT
I think they have some unfinished business in front of them, starting today with Minnesota. They lost some heartbreakers this year. They finished under .500 in conference play, so they have some work in the conference tournament.
How crazy is it that KU is in position to get a 1 seed for the 5th time in 6 years, especially with how many players have either graduated or left early in that time span? Bill Self is a pretty good coach huh?
Not only is he a good coach, but he's my national coach of the year. He's putting up numbers to be a potential hall of famer down the road. He's won 8 consecutive Big 12 titles.
Mr. Vitale, What's your take on what people are saying about this years Kentucky Bball team being considered better than our 1996 Mens team? Thanks
In '96 they had a lot of talent they were deeper. But this Super 6 has been excellent. They play suffocating defense. Davis is such an intimadator.
If Drexel makes the big dance how far do you think they will go?
They belong in the tournament. I don't care if you're talking about playing against Dick Vitale, Mike and Mike, Bob Ley, if you win 19 games in a row, you belong in the tournament.
It would be a crime if they didn't get in.
Dear DickCould you see Virginia Tech making the Tournament?
They have to win the ACC championship. Only chance.
Who has the best bench in the country righ now?
When you talk about depth, Syracuse is as deep as any team in America. They have great depth. UConn has some depth on that team. They can go to their bench. They haven't played to their potential all year. Really when you look at it, coaches shorten their benches for the tournament. They want to play less people and their best people as much as possible.
Are you sad to see the end of the Peyton Manning era here in Indy?
I really am. You would have thought that his career would have ended up in a Colts' uniform. It would be like Jeter not finishing his career as a Yankee. I like to see those stories. There aren't enough of them. I can't blame Jim Irsay. I can't blame Indianapolis. They're rebuilding and could start with Andrew Luck. It's a business. Like Peyton Manning said, it's Father Time.
When it's all said and done, I think he'll be a Dolphin.
What one skill is most important for the upset minded double digit seeds to possess? 3 pt shooting, rebounding?
I think 3-point shooting becomes a big factor when talking about an upset scenario. And the team that dictates the tempo of the game. Those play a big role.
Who are your sleeper teams?
I'll give you a real sleeper: Detroit. They played so well and played a great conference tournament. Their athleticism could create some problems. It will be interesting to see if they're in the same bracket as Michigan! Just like what a frenzy it would be if Kentucky and Murray State would face each other.
I have to run, but please get a chance to listen to the Colin Cowherd show. I'll be on at 12:45 p.m. ET. I'll be doing the ACC tournament.
