Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:01 PM)

Greetings, everyone. Thanks for joining the chat. I have a feeling I know where this is going, so let's get started.

ken watson greenville sc [via mobile]

What is the plan for a backup quarterback to push sanchez?

Rich Cimini
  (1:04 PM)

Well, Ken, we're assuming Sanchez will be the No. 1 -- and, barring something crazy, he will be. I think the Jets would love Chad Henne. Knows Sparano's system, strong arm, knows the division, good enough to make sanchez look over his shoulder.

Rich (New Jersey)

If the Jets are interested in Peyton Manning, what are they really saying of Mark Sanchez and his future in New York?

Rich Cimini
  (1:05 PM)

Yes, the Jets are interested in Manning, and it says they have questions about Manning. Sure, it's a rare opportunity to get a Hall of Fame QB, but if Sanchez took a step forward in '11 instead of a step back, you think we're having this conversation? No way.

ronk (ny)

Rich, can the Jets get Campbell, Henne or anyone with a heartbeat without at least the promise of open competition in camp? And if so, will camp really be an open competition? In other words, could Sanchize start the season as the #2?

Rich Cimini
  (1:07 PM)

Great question, ronk, because there's a feeling in the organization about this. How can they convince a legit QB to come and be a No. 2 to sanchez? You'd have to promise him a chance to compete for No. 1 or (more likely) overpay to make him a happy No. 2.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, Not going to bore you with Peyton talk. For now the free agency names you see at the spots the Jets need to improve are not exciting names. Yes they will sign role players but to me this years draft will either make or break the direction this team is going. Agree?

Rich Cimini
  (1:09 PM)

Gonna be a huge draft, that's for sure. They need quality and quantity. They've traded away a lot of picks over the years and now the lack of depth is showing up on the OL, WR, and LB. That No. 16 pick needs to be an immediate starter.

Joe (NJ)

Hi Rich, Is there any chance the Jets are expressing interet in Peyton just as an attempt to show they are not coddling Sanchez? If they don't get Peyton, you think Sanchez's fragile ego will be able to recover?

Rich Cimini
  (1:11 PM)

I do think there is an element to that, Joe. One person in the know told me Woody Johnson now realizes that Sanchez was coddled, but this Manning thing would be a rather elaborate scheme just to prove a point, don't you think?

Gary (York,Pa)

Good Afternoon, I feels like some of the luster has worn off Courtney Upshaw. I think he will be a good player but I'm of the belief that Mark Barron or Michael Floyd have to be given serious consideration at #16. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:13 PM)

Upshaw didn't have a great combine. He reportedly was stiff in the hips and wasn't as fluid as people expected. I think he's a good football player, solid against the run, but I don't know if you'd be getting an explosive pass rusher. Sounds like a Calvin Pace type. I think Barron is a possibility. Find it hard to believe Rex would take a WR in the first round, but you never know.

Billy (NJ Coast)

Hey Rich! I believe Peyton wouldn't sign with us because of our offensive line and lack of offensive weapons. What do you think is the biggest reason for him not to come here?

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

Believe me, Peyton probably knows more about the Jets than the Jets do. Biggest drawbacks: Weather. Huge media market. Eli factor. Scheme. Personnel. Rex's coaching style. Locker-room issue. That about covers it.

Marco (New Jersey)

Used to think Tannenbaum was a good GM. Now after guaranteeing 2 more years to a cancer in the locker room (who is not even good enough to be a #1 receiver though he is getting that kind of money), the Hunter fiasco (guaranteeing his salary a month ago and trying to trade him now), and a no-win pursuit of an aging, damaged, deteriorating former great (if he comes it will not work out and they will have to rebuild from scratch , if he doesn't he's ruined Sanchez' confidence even more) I think he must be on his last legs here. Do you agree he will be gone if this season is another disaster?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

All valid points, Marco. This will be a critical year for Tannenbaum. He's had a few great draft picks, but the roster has a lot of holes and the money situation isn't great.

Bilal Siddiqui (Jersey City)

With so many premier S's getting tagged, where do the Jets look to shore up the middle? Lot of rumblings of Mark Barron, but his skill-set reminds me HEAVILY of Eric Smith. And can you elaborate on why Wayne Hunters contract got guaranteed when they're trying to trade him?

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

I think Barron is a possibility, assuming he's ok medically. There was a date in mid-Feb in which Hunter's $2.45M became guaranteed. They could've cut him before then, but they decided to hold on to him, figuring it was worth the $2.45M to see if they could trade him or keep him as a backup. No matter what Tannenbaum says, I can't see Hunter starting.

Amanda (NY)

If the Jets trade Hunter, do they look to fill his spot in FA or in the draft?

Rich Cimini
  (1:21 PM)

I think the chances of them trading Hunter are slim. I think they're stuck with him.

JD (Suffern, NY)

Rich, Nice job, as always. I like Michael Floyd as a WR prospect, but if Holmes is supposedly such a locker room malcontent, what are the chances that the Jets use a high draft pick on a WR where an impressionable rookie might pick up some bad vibrations? I don't think that Meachem is the answer as a FA and Wayne looks like he'll try to follow Peyton. Where else can they go to pick up the passing attack? While I'm at it, who on the defense has Sanchez's back? Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (1:24 PM)

Thanks, JD. I've heard good things about Floyd as well, assuming his off-the-field issues are cleaned up. I don't think they're worried about Holmes poisoning the guy; Holmes actually likes to help young players. He just doesn't want to help his QB. I know there are some big WRs the Jets like in the draft, and they might be able to pick up a second-tier WR in FA.

Derrick (NY)

Rich, what is Joe Namath's problem? Does he have an axe to grind with the Jets? Why does he dislike Rex so much? It's at the point where he is just getting annoying. We get it your an icon and won a Superbowl. I love how he keeps critiquing the Jets and telling him to get things together. This coming from a guy who embarrassed the Jets on MNF a couple years back with his drinking problem. Stay classy Joe.

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

You're right, he keeps dogging the Jets, but what has he said that's off base? He's right. How can they expect Manning to come when their own house is divided?

Jerry (NY)

Rich, if Luke Kuechly is available at 16, would the Jets draft him. The guy is a tackling machine and plus he is a high character guy. We all know the Jets need more of them.

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

I've heard wonderful things about him, but I'd have to question taking an ILB at 16. Would he be a three-down player? Probably not. At 16, you need a playmaker type -- WR, RB, rush LB or CB. Maybe even a S.

Danny C (NY)

What is the likelihood of a Bart Scott trade? Can the Jets get any value back in return if a trade were to happen?

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

Remember the Dewayne Robertson trade a few years back to Denver? Remember the Mason trade last season? They traded those guys for pretty much nothing. Unless Scott re-works his contract, it'll be the same deal.

Bill (NY)

Rich, Adam Schefter said on Sportscenter that if the Jets were to get Peyton Manning they could trade Sanchez for a number 1 draft pick or possibly two second rounders. My question is not about the Jets getting Manning because I don't think they will. My question is would Sanchez's trade value be that high. I find that hard to believe.

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

I don't see any team in the bottom third of the first round that would give up the pick for Sanchez. A second rounder, maybe. Don't worry, it won't come to that.

Do you have any info on the alleged Hunter trade? What NFC team? Who or what round pick they are looking to receive?

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.

What is going on with Rob Turner, with his rehab and spot on the team?

Rich Cimini
  (1:33 PM)

I think they'd like to have him back in his former role, pre-injury, but they're going to let him shop.

Bill H (NYC)

Hi Rich... what is going on in the front office?? The fact that the Jets are looking to shop Hunter (and his guaranteed $2.45mm) one month after they had the option not to pay him is insane. It seems like gauranteeing his contract was almost like a PR move on the same day they guaranteed Holmes. I don't get it? Is this to make room possibly for a run at Manning? Thanks!

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

Definitely some PR involved in the Hunter decision. I don't think $2.45M will make a difference in the Manning chase.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Hypothetically, Melvin Ingram and Trent Richardson are still available when the Jets are on the clock. Who do you think THEY would take? The need vs immense value pick

Rich Cimini
  (1:36 PM)

Hmm, great questions. Ingram fills a bigger need, but Richardson would be the value. Purely speculation on my part, but I think they'd take Richardson. Rex loves him.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Jets clearly need help at safety and Laron Landry appears to be the best available free agent. Do you think the jets will make a play for his services? How much money would Landry command?

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

I think they'll be interested, but because of supply and demand, his price is going to get high. And, remember, he's been really banged up the last two years.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Why do you feel that Mo Wilkerson had merely a mediocre season? He exceeded my expectations coming in as a rookie playing in a new defense (3-4 defense) with no offseason at all. He was able to start every game producing 3 sacks (3-4 lineman rarely produce sacks) and leading the jets in tackles for a loss

Rich Cimini
  (1:38 PM)

did I say he was "mediocre?" He was better than that. He was okay to solid. I say that because, you're right, not having the offseason was huge. I expect him to make strides this year.

Bill H (NYC)

Rich... if the offense gets off to a slow start again this year with the same cast of Sanchez/Holmes/Hunter etc and same QB coach, are we looking at an implosion like last year, and a possible regime change?

Rich Cimini
  (1:39 PM)

Whoa, let's dial it down for a second, Bill. Hey, they very well might get off to a slow start, because it's a new offense. But you have to be patient. No panic buttons.

Is it just me, or does it seem that the "Can't Wait!" game was the last time Scott looked like a solid player?

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

No, it's not just you.

Joey (Ithaca, NY)

Will the jets make a play for Freeney? Any other pure pass-rushing DL free agents?

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

Freeney is not a fit for the Jets. He's a classic 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 DE or 3-4 OLB. Sure, he could be a third-down rusher, but are you going to give up a good draft pick and pay big bucks for a 32-yo situational rusher?

Matthew (Syracuse)

Hey Rich love your work. What free agents do you see the Jets targeting? Also as a bonus question since you are a syracuse alum I wonder how far u see the Cuse going in the NCAA tourney?

Rich Cimini
  (1:43 PM)

Thanks, Matt. Early targets: QB Henne, OLB Johnson, ILB McClain, WR Robinson, maybe RB Brown.

Matt (Madison)

Hi Rich, great job as always! If the Jets should land Manning...IFWhat kind of trade value does Sanchez have? I imagine that teams would realize the Jets were slaves to his salary and wait for him to hit the waiver wire

Rich Cimini
  (1:44 PM)

You raise a good point, Matt, one I should've addressed with the earlier Sanchez question. Any team that deals for him would want to re-do his contract, which has two years left. He's due to make $8.5M in base this year, plus a $2.75M roster bonus... steep numbers.

Jimmy (Rochester)

Where has Sancez been and why hasn't he said anything since the end of the season? Seems odd the so called face of the franchise had been silent. Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (1:46 PM)

A lot of people are wondering the same thing. Hasn't talked to the media since the day after the season. He'll have to do it sooner or later. My money is on sooner.

Will (Nottingham, england)

Can Rex work his magic and recruit Peyton manning?

Rich Cimini
  (1:47 PM)

Rex's magic might work on some players, but not Manning. He doesn't need to be wooed; he just wants to find the best situation.

Jarrett (Long Island)

Whats the probability Tannenbaum can trade Hunter?

Rich Cimini
  (1:48 PM)

Better chance of trading the equipment manager.

Aaron (Florida)

Rich, is it true the reports that New York Espn confirmed jets are not front-runners for manning?

Rich Cimini
  (1:49 PM)

yes, it's true. I wrote it. The Jets are not frontrunners. I think the top teams are Mia, KC, Ariz, Den. Got a funny feeling about KC. I think the smaller media market might appeal to Manning.

Jared (Long island)

Do you think if Trent Richardson is there at 16, it is almost a guarantee the Jets take him?

Rich Cimini
  (1:50 PM)

He'd be very hard to pass up.

Nick (..)

Everyone is saying that the Jets are showing no faith in Sanchez by showing interest in Manning. Hold on. This is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. Even if Sanchez had 25 tds and only 10 interceptions, I would hope the Jets EXPLORE the opportunity to add a guy like Peyton. Doesn't mean they need to get him. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:51 PM)

Nick, if Sanchez was 25/10, they wouldn't be flirting with Peyton, trust me.

Rob (NJ)

Has Mike Tannenbaum every given a straight answer for the debacle that was trading away Dwight Lowery? (not that Tanny every takes blame for anything)

Rich Cimini
  (1:52 PM)

I think Mike admitted recently he had some regret about the Lowery trade. They felt they had good depth at S when they made the deal, but it didn't turn out that way. Bad move.

mo (new york)

do the jets have a legit shot of signing mario williams?

Rich Cimini
  (1:53 PM)

I don't think they'll be players.

Matthew (Syracuse)

I know its off topic but since you are a Syracuse alum and I am a Syracuse student I was wondering how far you see the Orange going in the NCAA tournament?

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

Final Four, bay-beee.

SB Fan (Stony Brook)

Hey Rich, are you making an appearance at Stony Brook Arena tomorrow for the America East Championship Game? Got a prediction for the game?

Rich Cimini
  (1:56 PM)

yes, I'll be there. Looking forward to some serious March Madness on campus. I think this is SB's time. Mature team, tough-minded. Not the best shooters, but hard-nosed on defense.

Mike Barry (Long Island)

What are the names being thrown around that might be taken at the #16 spot in April?

Rich Cimini
  (1:57 PM)

My leading candidates: Upshaw, Ingram, Barron. My sleeper: Andre Branch.

Louie (Tampa, FL)

The Jets need to forget about Manning - that's a pipe dream that isn't happening. But how about filling some holes on defense - any chance the Mike T could work his cap magic and the Jets could become players for Mario Williams?

Rich Cimini
  (1:57 PM)

Ain't happening.

Melissa (College park, Maryland)

Is there any update/progress on Bart Scott and the potential trade/release?

Rich Cimini
  (1:58 PM)

He's had a number of good conversations with Rex, but he's yet to have the big sit-down. Should be coming soon.

Casey (Bayonne, NJ)

Hey Rich how much do you think Sanchez's apparent pinched nerve affected his play at the end of last year? I believe during the season you mentioned that he first received the injury in the Denver game and it was reaggrivated in the Philly game (likely on the Babin hit).

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

I think it affected him in spots. From what I understand, it would flare up on certain hits and last for a few minutes. To his credit, he never used it as an excuse.

MS (Queens)

Rich, IMO the Nets need to keep Ladanian on just for leadership even if he never touches the ball (although I think he has a lot left) do you think they keep him another year?

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

I agree, he's a good leader, but that ship has left the port.

Joe (Haledon)

If the Jets are looking to trade Wayne Hunter, why wouldn't they just have cut him weeks ago, to save money?

Rich Cimini
  (2:00 PM)

Great question. They're gambling that they can get something for him. If not, I'm guessing they're okay with him being an overpaid backup.

Papa (NJ)

Rich what is you opinion Mcelory? He is a proven winner at Alabama and I think could read a Defense better then Sanchez

Rich Cimini
  (2:01 PM)

really looking forward to seeing McElroy in training camp. Has great intangibles. He might surprise.

John M (NY)

Hey Rich, great job. Quick question - How are the contract talks with Pouha looking before free agency begins?

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

From everything I hear, he'll be back.

Will (Nottingham )

Why does joe Namath insist on bad mouthing the jets? If he truly loved gang green he would try and sell it to Peyton not Put him off the jets

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

Yeah, but he really likes Sanchez.

Bruce (Nj)

Why don't jets fans give Sanchez a chance with a new off co, if everyone really believes schotty was the problem?

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

We'll find out, won't we?

rob (tamarac, fl)

do you think we are gonna look at bringing back Braylon Edwards. reunite the flyboyzzzzzzz?

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Uh, don't think so.

James (Lincoln park nj)

What are the chances the jets are able to actually sign manning?

Rich Cimini
  (2:04 PM)

Maybe a 10 pct chance. I think Mia, Arz, KC and Den are ahead of them.

rob (tamarac, fl)

do you see Bart Scott in a Jets uniform this coming season? he was terrible last year.

Rich Cimini
  (2:05 PM)

Don't see him back.

Brat (NYC)

Do you expect any teams to have serious interest for Wayne Hunter, who's reportedly on the trading block?

Rich Cimini
  (2:05 PM)

jon (new york)

Rich, Any chance the jets trade back in the draft to get some more picks since they have so many holes to plug?

Rich Cimini
  (2:05 PM)

That's not in Mike's DNA.

Mitch (Jersey shore)

Hey rich,What kind of wonders do you think peyton coming would be able to do with dustin keller? Immediate pro bowl TE?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

He'd be Dallas Clark.

Rich Cimini
  (2:07 PM)

Sorry, folk, I've got to call it a day here. Appreciate all the great questions. The next time we chat, we should have an answer on the QB situation. Stay tuned and have a great weekend. Rich
