With some restructed contracts and maybe some cuts,Can the Saints bring back Nicks and Colston?.
Maybe one of them. But even that's going to be a challenge. Sounds like some teams are ready to throw a ton of money at Nicks.
Darren Sharper said that a former Saints employee (not a player and likely a coach) told the league about Bountygate. Who do you think it was?
I don't know about that. And I'm really not buying the whole "snitch" thing. The league started looking into it on its own after the Warner and Favre games. Did some people talk in the investigations that followed? Obviously. But I don't think it was a case of someone going to the league and blowing the whistle on them.
Hey Pat, I know the Panthers have to make some moves around to make room for cap space, but what do you think the chances the Panthers would look at a WR like Moss, Ward, or Colston if he's loose?
I think Colston's out of their price range. I don't think Panthers would have interest in Moss. Ward, maybe. If the price is right.
If the bucs work out a deal to get Finnegan and VJax, do you think it is more likely they will draft Richardson?
Probably, but let's see if they really do get Finnegan and VJax.
I have another question they report say that the bounty program have been going on since 2009 right but the only team have been crying about it is the Vikings because the lost why have no more teams come out
Josh Freeman did talk about it.
Hey Pat i like your blog i want to touch on the saints Bounty program its pretty much a 50P split on fans voilent hits is apart of the game weather it is a bounty or not now i dont agree with the saints they should get punish serverly but i think Sean Payton And Mickey Loomis should get fired or step down let me ask you this did Bill Bellacheck get fired no did Robert Kraft get fired no in my opinion they got caught cheating spying on others teams practice was their punish serverly no and then the nfl destroy the tapes we dont know how much cheating have been going on my point is u have to punish the same way the saints the same way the nfl punish the Patriots they cheated for 7 years and got 3 superbowl titles hitting people hadr is not cheating
They were told to stop and they did not.
Pat most likely the falcons are going to make a big splash because of not having a first rd pick. what are the odds "super mario" takes his talents to ATL? If we have enough cap room to make it happen, then we should.
I've got an item up on blog right now saying Falcons should go hard after Mario. I think he might be the "missing link" that Ray Edwards said he'd be last year.
Pat, i dont like where all the draft experts have the panthers picking a DT with the #9 pic, i think they should go either DB, Safety, or WR, what would u do with the pic?
Not sure there will be a DB or WR there that's worth the pick. But, if there is, anything is possible. I also wouldn't rule out an offensive tackle.
Pat you recently wrote the bucs might look at getting finnigan and vincent jackson, how likely is it that they go after a carl nicks and curtis lofton? and if this actually happens, does that mean #5 pick will go to trent richardson?
I'd like to see them go after Lofton, who appears on his way out of Atlanta. I think he's a solid player and a very good leader. Don't think they'll go after Nicks. They've already got money tied up in guard with Joseph and Zuttah.
Who do you think makes most sense for Tampa to pick up at RB? I think drafting LaMichael James or Doug Martin would be a nice complement. I also think picking up Hillis and letting him replace Graham at FB would be interesting, it would almost be like having Alstott again.
I'm with you on either of the guys you mention drafting, if they don't go with Richardson in first round. By the way, did you go to Crestwood High School? I grew up just up the road from there.
Good afternoon Pat, Have you heard anything about the cap number yet?
Nothing definite yet. Teams expect to find out for sure probably Sunday or Monday.
Do you still believe Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis deserve to be fired?
Yep, if they're not suspended, I think they should be fired, but it doesn't sound like Tom Benson is going to do that.
I am hearing all kinds of reports on why Drew Brees and Micky Loomis couldn't come to an agreement on the contract. Is it because Drew wanted more up front money in the first two or three years?
Those are the reports. But we don't know if that's completely accurate. Loomis, Brees and his agent are only ones that really know what happened in the negotiations.
Pat, I know that no one can really predict the punishment outcome for this bounty scandal but how about this scenario. Everyone feels that suspensions are coming but how's your take on this punishment for the players. Regardless of the team's record for the 2012 season the Saints are eliminated from play-off contention!!!
I'm guessing some players will face suspensions. But, exactly which players, we don't know yet. Could be some that are no longer with Saints.
Who do you think Tampa will go after at RB? In the draft I thought Doug Martin and LaMichael James would be solid picks in the 2nd or 3rd round. I think we are better with Clayborn in the first. Also, Hillis would be an interesting pick up. Moving him to FB to replace Graham would be like having Alstott back.
Gee, seems to be a common question in NEPA today. Sure you're not the same guy from Mountain Top?
Pat with the current events unfolding with the Saints, how do you see this season going, and do you see either Loomis or Payton being with the team this year?
Not even going to try to predict what league will do in its entirety. But I'm pretty sure there will be suspensions for at least part of the season.
Am I going to get signed by the saints or not?
Might be tough. They're going to have tough time coming up with cap room. Other teams are going to be making serious runs at you.
Excluding Super Mario, who else will the Falcons pursue?
Love to see them get a left tackle. Maybe Marcus McNeil?
Do the Falcons have enough cap room to win a bidding war for Mario, Nicks and sign a decent OT in FA?
Stay tuned on Atlanta's cap situation. I've got a little update on that. I'll write it and put it on blog as soon as we finish the chat. Not huge, but interesting.
Sorry about the repeat question, sent the first one before the chat, and yes I did go to Crestwood. What do you think the most likely option is for Tampa with Aqib Talib? I just saw he's now being sued from an accident a while back. His situation just seems to get worse and worse.
Well, the latest Talib thing is nothing new. It happened in 2010 and he wasn't charged with a crime. I think the key thing now is his upcoming trial. That could make the decision for the Bucs. Yep, I've been to Crestwood. I went to Lackawanna Trail.
Do you think Carolina should go after Dontari Poe in the draft? I think DT are the biggest need, and could make the rest of the defense better?
That's the trendy thought right now. He had a great combine and could fill a big need.
Pat, I read an article about Thomas Davis and how excited he is to get back on the field and how he wants to be the first effective player to have three surgeries on the same knee. He knows the Panthers will have to restructure his contract in order to play for them, do you see him being more than willing to restructure?
I think TD will do whatever it takes and I think Panthers will work with him. Hope it works out for him. Good guy and a very good player if healthy.
Pat, if bounties gave the Saints' defenders an incentive to injure opposing players, did the Saints defense actually cause more injuries, or get penalized more than NFL average? Was there a measurable effect?
John Clayton had some details on that. Check the website, you should be able to find them. Think it was first posted just a few days ago.
any word on preseason schedules release and any chance Atlanta Washington match up ? Trying to hold off on planning vacation plans till it comes out thats why i ask pat!
Wish I had an answer for you, but we don't get that until April.
Brees has obviously built up a ton of goodwill in the gulf region since he arrived in NO. With the contract situation playing out the way it did, I can now envision a scenario where Brees doesn't sign the tag before OTA's begin and may sit out until the season starts. Would Brees actually go this route? Seems like Condon and Loomis are really going to the mattresses with this negotiation.
Hard to imagine Brees skipping OTAs. But both sides are playing hardball so far, so anything is possible.
Is there any chance Roman Harper gets cut? How much cap relief would that alone give the Saints?
Probably not. Problem there is Roman just got the new deal last year, so they're still on the hook for a lot of pro-rated bonus money. They wouldn't be freeing up cap space. They'd be losing it.
Do you think think that Carolina should go after Vincent Jackson if they can free up cap room
I really don't see any way they can free up the cap room. They've already got to make some moves just to get under the cap to start free agency. They'll need money to sign draft picks and mid-level free agents. Source with Panthers told me not to expect big moves this year. They had their big splurge last year.
What is the likelihood that Atlanta will cut Sam Baker to make more cap space?
Pretty high, is my guess.
Have the saints even offered Colston a contract?
Not that I'm aware of.
Afternoon Pat. Look, I understand the falcons haven't had much pass rush outside of Abe, but don't you think some of the blame should go to VanGorder (and Smith for that matter) and his scheme and lack of ability to develop pass rushers? Any chance the market for Abe isn't great and he comes back to ATL for a decent cost?
Good point. I think some blame probably should go to coaching. I'd say there's an outside chance Abe could come back if he drops is price a good bit and they haven't made a major move in the meantime.
Which direction do you think the Falcons take with their 1st pick in the draft this year (in rd 2)? (I forget, are most FA signings done before the draft?)
Yeah, most FA signings are done before draft, so that will narrow their needs down for the draft.
Keep hearing DT for Panthers, We just drafted 2 last year in the 3rd round. We still have Ron Edwards coming back from IR, and the play of the back ups seemed better then the rookies did last season. What is your opinion? DT and good first pick? Or better to trade back?
Well, DT has been such a problem spot for them, that they might as well load up on it and get it fixed once and for all.
Hey Pat, given the Saints current situation with bountygate, Brees' contract and other related salary cap issues, and no 1st round pick and possible reduction of other picks. Would you say this team is looking at a strong decline?
Possible, because they're going to lose some key free agents and could be without their coach for a bit. Also could have some players suspended. However, as long as they have Brees, they'll be competitive.
Hey Pat, any word on Ronde Barber? If he hangs 'em up does that increase the chances of drafting Claiborne?
Nothing yet. But would expect some news on the front soon. Not saying I know for sure that something's coming. But logic says they'd like to have that settled, one way or the other, by Tuesday afternoon.
Vincent Jackson and Cortland Finnegan to the Bucs possible?
Possible, sure. Not guaranteeing it, but possible. Both would make sense and they've got the money to do it.
Have you heard anything on David Gettis' injury? Before he got hurt I thought he was playing much better than Brandon Lafell.
I've been told he's coming along well and is expected to be ready for camp.
Thanks for answering my questions Pat. Last one, why does it seem everyone has given up on Cameron Jordan providing a pass rush? Do you think Spags will get him going?
Yeah, I think it's possible Spags gets him going. Spags is a good coach. But Jordan's probably never going to be a 12-sack guy. He's more of an all-around end. Plays run well and has upside as a pass rusher. But doubt he'll ever be an elite pass rusher.
Should Carolina go after Brandon Lloyd if they have cap space? I think he's a mid level player so he shouldn't cost to much?
How old is Brandon Lloyd these days? Seems like he's been around a while. If so, might be too old for Bucs.
I saw today that people are mentioning tulloch going along with jackson and finnegan. Any way Tampa would have the cap space to pull THAT off?
Tampa has cap space to do just about anything it wants. Not saying your scenario will happen. But they're way up there among league leaders in cap space.
Any word on Harry Douglas...how committed are the Falcons to bringing him back?
Think they'd like to keep him, but only if it's at a reasonable rate.
Considering Drew Brees is one of the faces of the NFL, the NFLPA, the lockout, and with the NFL and NFLPA's focus on safety, why hasn't Drew been forced to answer questions on his knowledge of the Saints' bounty policy? This flies in the face of everything he supposedly stands for. Don't you think he has some culpability? Or is there a possiblity that he was the whistleblower to get some leverage on a contract, and therefore immune? there are still so many questions to be answered.
Are you really Kyle Turley and using a fake name??? That's basically what Turley has been saying -- very loudly.
Pat, what are your thoughts on the contract the Falcons gave Thomas Decoud, he's been a viable player for that defense however it seems they gave alot of money to a player they're still hoping will develop further.
If you look at way contract is structured (item is on blog), they obviously believe he can develop into something. Salary really shoots up as contract goes along. If he doesn't develop, then he probably never gets that money.
Lloyd is 31, drafted in 2003
Yeah, then probably too old to fit the Bucs profile.
What will the panthers do in FA? I know A-list free agents is out of the question since we don't any salary cap...so what can really expect...cause they just can't assume to solve all their problems in the draft.
They'll solve some in draft. And they'll get some mid-level free agents. Hurney will work the cap enough to at least free up some money.
Why would the Panthers release Adi for this other kicker? I read he has Kick off, field goal, and a small bit of punting. Chance they let him do all 3 in the future and only have 1 kicker? Frees up another roster spot? Baker is overpaid in my opinion for an average punter.
Do you think that the Bucs trade out the fifth pick if Miami comes calling.
They'd have to consider it. Could add a pick and probably still get a player they like with first pick.
Todd McClure retiring or coming back for the veteran minimum?
Suspect we'll be hearing for sure in next 72 hours or so. But my guess is he comes back.
Pat, who do you think will be the starting RB for the Bucs on opening day?
Someone not currently on the roster.
I know it's Florida and all, but do you think the Bucs might have a hard time getting free agents to sign there because of the huge step backwards they took last year, and the new coaching staff, etc.?
Well, I think Schiano will have to sell himself to free agents. But I think if he can do that, Bucs can impress free agents. Show them the facility, one of the nicest in league. Great grass field and stadium. Nice weather. And don't underestimate this when you're talking about millions of dollars -- no state income tax.
Just a guess guys but if Gregg Williams was listing off the "bounties" for his players on defense. Brees wouldn't have much knowledge since he's at the offensive meetings.
I don't know for sure, but Brees seems to be pretty aware of everything that goes on in that building.
I read that Peyton Manning said that "he'd love to play for a team with the talent of a Kregg Lumpkin or a Quincy Black on the roster.' Any truth to that statement?
Good one. But, sadly, I think Lumpkin is gone. Unless they do it real soon, he hasn't gotten a tender as a restricted free agent.
Will Ovie Mughelli be coming back to the Falcons or will he be cut?
He's got a pretty high cap figure and his coming off an injury. He's not young anymore. He could be cap casualty, especially if they're clearing money to go after Mario.
With all the cap room washinton has and money to offer manning I dont' think Manning will go to washington. I feel he'll move to another dome. Seattle, Arizona...etc. What do you think.
We try to stay with NFC South in these chats. But I'm seeing a lot of Manning questions, so I'll take one. He's said he wants to stay in AFC, so I'm leaning toward Miami and not ruling out Denver. If he changes and goes to NFC, I'd like to see him in Arizona. Think he and Fitzgerald could be special.
Does Spags regret the NO job after all this mess come up?
He could end up as head coach, for at least part of the season.
You have a very liberal view of football, i mean big hits are very bad in NFL these days, Why do take a view like that. Nothing wrong with knocking a player out of a game with a llegal hit. Funny all the former players on ESPN seem to think its not big deal.
It's not so much my personal opinion. It's Roger Goodell's opinion. He's all about player safety and I'm just trying to tell you what's going to happen. Penalties will be severe. Goodell's not going to just let this thing blow over.
Pat, do you think the Bucs will try to upgrade the RT position and say adios to Trueblood.
Cap wise, it would hurt them. He just got the new deal last year and they'd be on hook for some cap space. Then again, they've got plenty of cap space, so it wouldn't really destroy them.
Pat, there mouth breathers participating on your chat defending the Saints Bounty gate are dopes...its not the Bounty, its they fact that they lied to Goodell about it! Yes, every team has bounties/incentives of sorts, everyone has admitted that. But none was investigated, lied to Goodell, investigated again then fessed up. Geez, why is it so hard for people to understand??? oh yeah, blind team loyalty is why. Karma sucks Saints fans.
Only thing I'd add to that is they were told to stop it, which probably would have been the end of it. They didn't stop it and continued it.
Has there been any mention of building a team as best as possible and getting a fill in back or maybe Martin and then looking to go after Ray Rice next season since he was tagged? He always praises Shiano and wonder if that stalled the contract talks to come down here and play for his ol ball coach.
Not sure you wait a year on a back. They've got very short shelf lives.
You stated that Atlanta worked out Tatupu, what happened to Channing Crowder from Miami and his interest?
Would think that remains a possibility. Am guessing they wanted to get a look at Tatupu and see where he's at after sitting out a season.
PAT you are being very hard on the Saints, Just remember the NFL KNEW about this for 2 years. So maybe they should get some of the Blame? They Could have stopped it SOONER!!!!!!!!!
Oh, I'm sorry. Let me then say, I think it's absolutely wonderful and completely admirable that they ran a bounty program and intentionally tried to injure opponents for three years. That's just wonderful. See, if I say that, I'm not doing my job, which is to not be a fan.
Why is Lofton on his way out of Atlanta? Is his asking price too high? I think Lofton is a good player and great locker room guy. I would hate to see him go.
I feel the same way. But it sounds like Nolan may view him as a two-down player and I think Curtis wants to be an every-down guy.
I thought the Bucs should have tried Tatupu out last year. Was there ever any talks about bringing him in and if not why?
I recall mention of that, but can't remember if it was just media speculation or if they truly showed some interest in him.
Would Dan Connor not be a better fit in Atlanta than Lofton?.
Connor's not exactly great in pass coverage either. But, if you want a two-down MLB, then Connor's price is probably a good bit cheaper than Lofton's.
Can the falcons sign Lofa Tatupu before free agency
Yes, they can because free agency rules don't apply to him because he was out of the league last year.
Pat, do you think the Falcons will make 2 big moves in free agency, since they do not have a first round investment?
At least two. I'm thinking pass rusher and left tackle and possibly one or two others.
When would Marcus McNeil be cut from the Chargers? Soon enough for the Falcons to grab him or after the draft?
All indications are that will be coming in the next few days.
Could Tampa Bay possibly try getting Barrett Ruud back? I assume they regret letting him go. Foster played good but he's a better fit as an OLB I think.
Doubt it. Think that bridge was burned by both sides.
Did the Falcons overpay Bierman?
Not really. I'll have details on his contract soon. They didn't pay him real starter money. They paid him good money for a rotation guy.
Lofa Tatupu better than Curtis Lofton?
No, but if they're going to make Lofton a two-down guy, then Tatupu can come in a lot cheaper and do close to what Lofton would do.
I cant seem to get a question answered no matter how many times I submit it. Or disguise myself. Will you please tell me if Nicks to the Bucs is a decent possibility?
Doubt it. They've already got good money tied up at guard with Joseph and Zuttah.
Baker and Mugheili get cut...but who else? Any big surprises?
Those are probably the two big ones. But I'll have some interesting cap news on the Falcons on the blog shortly. In fact, let me go and write it. Should be up in 20 to 30 minutes. Thanks to all for taking part in the chat.
