Ok guys, let's get rolling.
Who is the best interview on the current OU coaching staff? And conversely, who is the worst?
Norvell, Patton and Bobby Jack are the best. Jury is still out on Mike Stoops and Kish. Josh Heupel is getting better. The least requested guys for interviews would be Jackie Shipp and Cale Gundy.
how did the weekend practice go with the visit of Max Browne? Did he seem wowed by OU practice and did it help the chances of him coming to the sooners?
It sounds like everything went as well as it could. We'll see what happens.
Hey Jake, I really enjoyed the article you wrote about Landry last week. I coulnd't agree more, everyone needs to understand he's following behind one of the greatest QB's in school history. Also, on that note, these "fans" need to stop screaming for Bell; they need to be logical about it, what makes one think that a kid who seen playing time from a gadget formation is going to better than a player who has three years experience? Sure, Landry makes some bad decisions every now and then, so does Drew Brees and other quality QB's. Just my two cents, I think we're lucky to have him as OU's qb.
You'd be amazed by how many emails I get ripping Landry. Even some friends of mine seemingly always have a bone to pick with him. The bottom line is he might end up as one of the best five QBs in OU history. OU is lucky to have him.
what are your first impressions of the DE's so far in spring practice
RJ Washington was the story of the winter. He's really picked it up and become a vocal leader for that defense. RJ could have the same kind of senior year that Frank Alexander did. Chaz Nelson is really speedy, and could be useful on obvious pass rush downs Geneo Grissom evidently reinjured his foot. Not sure he would have been in the four-man rotation anyway this spring the way Nelson, Chuka were coming along.
Are you going to watch my movie when it comes out?
Absolutely. I can't figure out what direction the director will go within... whether it will be a character based on Switzer, or character playing Switzer. And who would play him? No good suggestions have come to mind.
So, you're not buying into Lon Kruger taking the bball Sooners back to the tournament next year? And in turn, I'm assuming you aren't buying the hype around Amath M'baye either?
People were saying the same thing last year about Romero Osby. Is Osby a good player? Sure. But did he propel OU into the tournament. Not even close. This team has a ways to go. I suppose they could get there, but I remain skeptical. That said, I hear really good things about M'baye. He should help.
Where did Willie Martinez end up?
He ended up as the DBs coach at Auburn.
with spring ball set to start up what do you take from the high school signings and new staff at ohio state do we get back to national title talks even with the one year ban
Wrong chat, but I'll answer this since my wife is an Ohio State grad. The Bucks won't be in the hunt this year. The bowl ban essentially precludes them from playing in the BCS title game. But watch out in 2013. Ohio State should be back by then, based on the way Meyer has been recruiting.
I heard that Whaley is starting to run. What does his time table look like for getting back on the field?
You've heard correct. I saw Whaley run with my own eyes last week, and he looked surprisingly nimble. I was halfway expecting him to still be hobbling around. The fact that he's jogging means there's a ready good chance he'll be cleared by fall camp.
Where do you think Danzel Williams fits in on OUr offense and what kind of playing time do you think he will get? Thanks.
I kinda like Danzel, based on what little I've seen of him. He's wearing Brandon Williams' No. 23 now, and I had to do a double take that that wasn't Williams out there running. They have a similar style. The backfield is fairly crowded though with Finch, Damien Williams, Whaley, Clay. Danzel is going to have to show more to secure a role.
Are there any running backs jumping out at you? Any guy who seems to be a complement to Whaley?
We already know what Finch and Clay can do and Damien isn't here yet. By default, the answer is Danzel Williams. He could get some run in the spring game.
Who do you expect more from this season? And if they don't bring it, they can be labeled a bust!
Rawls, good to have you back on the chat. Two names that come to mind are Kenny Stills and RJ Washington. Stills has been groomed to take over for Broyles at the No. 1 WR spot. It's critical to the OU offense he makes that leap. As for Washington, there's so much buzz around him right now that it would be incredibly disappointing if he didn't step up and win a starting job.
Any news from Max Browne's visit to Norman this past weekend?
Have you heard whether Max Browne had a good weekend in Norman? And whether he liked the practice he attended?
Sounds promising with Brown. OU did what it needed to do to keep him interested.
There are only three logical choices to play me in the movie:1) Gene Hackman2) Gene Hackman3) everyone else
Problem with that is Hackman is 70 years old. I'm assuming this movie will take place well before Switzer retired.
Plus, looking for someone who can deliver the Arky accent.
What is the roster limits for a college football team? Does that limit include redshirts? How many scholarships does a team have? Do you think the limits on scholarships and roster sizes benefit college football as a whole or provide parity overall?
The overall limit is 85. The year-by-year limit is 25, but there are so many loopholes there I don't even pay attention to it. The limits were instituted to provide parity. Considering what Oklahoma State and Baylor did last season, I'd say they are working in generating parity.
How is Kass Everett fitting in so far?
A-hah. I think we found our man to play Switzer. Frank, you could do the soundtrack, too.
Everett has some adjusting to do. It was probably premature of anyone to assume he was going to walk in and immediately lock down a starting job.
David Ubben just posted an article about the SEC being so dominant because of the interior linemen on both sides..will the DTs finally step up and be difference makers this year?
You might be on to something. This is the most depth OU has had on the interior of the o-line since I've been here. Ikard, Habern, Shead, Evans, Irwin, Nila could play for a lot of people. On the other side, keep an eye out for Jordan Phillips. Of anyone at d-tackle, he has the best chance to become a difference maker.
With Teddy Lehman and Dusty Dvorchek doing local radio, does that mean their playing days are over?
Who out of the incoming skill position players will make the biggest impact by seasons end?
If I had to put money on it, I'd say Courtney Gardner. I know OU has numbers at WR, but from everything I've heard, Gardner is a special talent. Again, that's assuming he makes it to campus, which is still up in the air.
Has Trey Metoyer looked as good in practice as people are saying? Or is there just alot of hype because he is finally on campus? And what are the chances of him taking the No. 1 receiver spot from Kenny
Probably a combination of both. But he really has looked good out there. Hopefully the expectations don't get carried away. If Stills doesn't nail down the No. 1 WR spot, the Sooners are in trouble, regardless of what Metoyer, Gardner or anyone else does.
So I hear there's a 3 1/2 school spread in 4 years on Kellen Jones... Are you taking the bet to cover? He's already got Michigan and OU... I think he covers at this rate... and does so in style since he prefers traditional powerhouse programs!
I don't fault Jones for leaving. The people that recruited him to OU -- Venables, Martinez, Ryan Reynolds -- are no longer there.
If seems the defense took a horrible downturn after last years Texas game. Is their anything the defense is doing differently this Spring compared to last year?
It's too early to assess. The first week was about technique more than it was schemes.
Are we going to be able to see ANY of this years spring ball on TV? Why have so many NCAA Football coaches gone the route of having practices behind closed doors? Is it just to hide stuff from other teams, protect players from over analysis by fans and media, or what?
Because college football coaches are some of the most paranoid people you'll ever meet in your life. There's really no other explanation.
What are your thoughts on the hurry up no huddle offense OU runs? It gets penalties from time to time and catches defenses off guard in some cases. It seems to impact our defense and the amount of time they spend on the field also. Do you think it's worth it to run the fast paced offense?
It's certainly a catch 22. The offense gets more plays off, but the defense has to defend more plays. That's why people expecting Mike Stoops to deliver defenses he did at the turn of the century are being unrealistic. In this system OU is going to give up points. More times than not, they're going to score more though, too.
Which of OUr receivers do you see as the speedy receivers or stretch the field receivers and which are the possession/sure handed guys?
Metoyer and Gardner could become vertical threats because of their size. Jaz is a field stretcher. Stills has top-end speed, but he strikes me as more of a possession guy because of all the underneath and short routes he runs.
I'm thinking Dennis Quaid is a pretty good fit for Barry Switzer.
He wasn't bad in The Express.
CGI... Gene Hackman with some CGI and he'll look 21 years-old! You gotta think outside the box, Trotter...On a different note... The OU baseball team in the 2012 CWS... buying or selling?
I think I'm buying. I love the JUCO talent Sunny brought in on the mound.
As someone who closely follows the program, what is the most inexplicable thing you've seen the coaching staff do? As in something you sat at home later and thought, "why on earth would they do that?"
I'll have to think about this one. Ask me again next week.
With Danzel Williams and Damien Williams both in the backfield what are the back of their jerseys going to say? Surely they won't put Dam Williams on a jersey?
Interesting question. They might go with "Dz" and "Dm." I'll ask.
What did Max Browne and the other prospects think of the visit? I wish for detail as it is nowhere for some reason.
Bob will have the latest on Browne on our premium board.
Guys, that's all the time we have today. I need to make a mad dash to Norman. Hope everyone has a great week. We'll do this next Monday, same time, same place.
