Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

JJT
  (1:06 PM)

Let me apologize for the brief delay. I stayed a little longer at Ron Washington's AM chat, so I could give u the latest info and as I was leaving, a woman asked me to do a brief interview for a Japanese TV station. But I'm here now and we can talk Cowboys FA, their $10 million cap hit, the Mavs, spring training with the Rangers, which is where I have been for 5 days and the resurgent Strs. We can even talk college hoops and SMU finally getting a new hoops coach. Yelawolf and JCole on the iPod today

Jason (Houston)

What do you think Martellus Bennet will go and if he leaves will the Boys go after a big name TE?

JJT
  (1:08 PM)

Marty B wants to be the man. No problem with that at all. If I were him, I'd take a one-year deal - even if it was for the minimum - if I could find a team that would commit to make me a big part of the offense. If you put up the numbers, the money will come. He just has to find that team

beevomav (Dallas)

Seems like the Cowboys and Redskins didn't act alone in the 2010 season.. The Bears paid Julius over #34 million in 2010 and $13 million in 2011...There were more...My question....Why don't the Cowboys or especially the Redskins sue the NFL and do you think this is a witch hunt?

JJT
  (1:11 PM)

here's the deal: Jerry sues the NFL. Then what? Is that going to help him with his cap space this year? No. Is it going to help him bring the Super Bowl here again? No. No. No. The one thing many folks don't seem to be taking into consideration is that Jerry was certainly part of the back-door dealing with the owners. But he took it to the limits, which is his personality and the other owners got mad. Jerry has no recourse.

Ian (Atl, GA)

With loss of $5 million for the next two seasons. Which of the Cowboys prospective FA targets is now least likely to be signed. Laurent Robinson, Brandon Carr, Safety, Backup QB, or ILB(backup). I'm not even mentioning Nicks b/c he is on record as saying he wants more than Logan Mankins. I figured he was out even before yesterday (they do have Nagy, Arkin getting stronger and could draft more if needed, IMO).

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

If the Cowboys cut players such as Newman, Kenyon Coleman and David Buehler and re-work the contracts of Dez, Romo, DeMarcus and Free they should have the money to do what they need to do. They just don't have the flexibility they would've had

O.J. Atogwe (In-Transit to Dallas)

Is it finally time the Cowboys make me their starting FS?

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

dude, if you couldn't play for the Redskins, I don;t know why you think you can play here - even though our safeties were average

Lex (Calgary, AB)

Mr Taylor, Why would the NFL sign off on the Austin contract knowing it was wrong? The timing of this makes no senes. How much of a dent does this put in the Cowboys plans?

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

Those are all legitimate questions. The issue is that Jerry was part of the collusion process, if we can call it that, but he and Snyder went further than the other owners, which angered their partners. Then their partners went crying to the commissioner. Back in the day, I'm convinced the commish would've said, "This is Jerry, my hands are tied." But since the Cowboys have become a mediocre franchise for nearly 20 years, he felt fine changing the rules. Again, there is no honor among thieves, so you shouldn't be shocked when they turn on u

Garrett Stager (PA)

More likely to come to Dallas...Nicks or Carr?

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

Carr. They're not going to make Nicks the highest-paid guard in the NFL. Remember, Leonard Davis?

Wayne (Orlando , FL)

Do you believe Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder will pursue litigation against the NFL.

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

Nope. They might have to reveal some things about themselves and the way the league does business that's best left private. Plus, if he sues the league he will NEVER get another Super Bowl. It would be delicious, though

nate k. (sioux falls)

can jerry resign L.robinson this year?

pep,stockton ca [via mobile]

Really jerry jones no need for manning REALLY. Please fire yourself as G.M. Please

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

For the right price. He's a No.2 and should be paid like one. Anything more and he can walk

Peter (Pa)

Could you see the cowboys trading up for Claiborne with so many teams trying to trade down.

JJT
  (1:18 PM)

I hope not. The Cowboys don't need to outsmart themselves. They need to take the highest-rated player on their board. Period. They;re not good enough to be tricky right now. Take the guy YOU want. Make a DECISION and take the guy. Don't say we like 5 guys and we're fine with whoever is left. Take the guy YOU want

victor (washington)

Whats the likelyhood from 1 to 10 that newman will return?

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

-6...the Cowboys need his cap space more than ever. The only good thing to come out of yesterday's salary-cap drama: no excuse or reason to keep Newman

joe (auburn,ca)

Who do you think the cowboys go after hard and early in free agency?

JJT
  (1:20 PM)

Carr, Houston center Chris Myers. Signing Myers and then drafting DeCastro would allow Dallas to have a young viable OL. Both tackles, the center and guard would be under 30 with Arkin or Nagy waiting in the wings, if Kosier leaves

Mark (Oregon)

What are the chances Dallas & Wash fight the salary cap reduction?

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

28 other teams didn't get fined. 4 teams did something they shouldn't have done

tc(mp) [via mobile]

the cowboys needs to trade there 1 round pick so they can stockup on draft choices and sign cortland finnigan as a free agent.when the cowboys were good they was 2 deep at almost every postion

JJT
  (1:22 PM)

really? That makes no sense. You need good players. The higher you draft, the better the odds you get a good player.

D-Trane (Jackson TN)

So with the cap hit that just happened yesterday, who do you think the Cowboys will be focused on the most to sign Mario Williams or Brandon Carr?

JJT
  (1:22 PM)

I don't see any way in the world Mario Williams signs with Dallas. he's not a good fit. This ain't fantasy football or Madden. Your players have to fit, and Williams doesn't.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Uh-oh, it's JJT time....time for me to put my Cowboy bias' aside and take my medicine like a man! Does Laron Landry take an incentive-laden contract with the 'Boys since he can't guarantee his health due to many injuries, or does he ask for lots of guaranteed money without being able to guarantee his own health?

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

NO. Dude wants to be Mr. Universe, which is fine. Body builders don;t play football. You have to have more than muscle mass. You need to be fluid and change directions quickly. He can't

Gobizzle (DC)

I think you messed up by answering a peyton manning question as if it were a laurent robinson question

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

Good point. Thanks. The Cowboys don't need Peyton Manning., Contrary to popular belief, quarterback wasn't the issue last season. Plus, he's had 4 neck surgeries. There's ZERO guarantee he can still play at the level he's established for himself. I don't think he can, and I'm not going to believe it until I see it for 8-9 games. The entire offense in Indy was built around his skill set and he had a silent language, so to speak, with his receivers. He won't have that now. Whoever signs Peyton will rue the day.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

These owners arguing to the commish is about as petty as a coworker in your office griping to your boss before coming to you first....how are these guys so rich and successful yet so poor at inter-office communication?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

They're spoiled. You say it's petty, but we all know folks like that.

Victor (TEXAS)

How would you address the needs of the cowboys in free agency...who would you go after?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

Carr and Myers at the top of the list. Physical CB and a center who can take control of the OL

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What College Football Player do you think will be a perfect fit in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys?

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

I can't possibly know that until we see who they sign in FA. If they sign Carr, then they probably don't Kirkpatrick. If the sign Nicks (doubtful), then they don't need DeCastro. The FA signings will reveal everything u need to know about the draft

tariqabdulnohead (Columbia, MO)

What's your sense of the Mavs' locker room right now? JET called the team out recently, I'm just wondering whether there are bigger issues than, say, Lamar's lackadaisical play or Roddy being able to hit a wide-open 11 footer down the stretch. Forget on-court chemistry, are these guys even getting along on a personal level?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

They have problems caused from the frustration of losing. For an old team, the schedule is a beast - mentally and physically. They don't have a consistent scoring option other than Dirk. They need a couple of wins to feel good about themselves before this stretch against good teams. So much of pro sports is all about confidence. They have none right now. But you can't have a pity party or, as we saw the other night, your opponents will deliver a butt-kicking

Chris (Dallas)

The way i understand it, De Smith, who's up for reelection could NOT let the cap be lower than what it was. The league said to if they throw Cowboys and Redskins under the bus, they'd give it to the other teams. This is by definition collusion. If they had to get the money up, why not force the teams that were under the cap to spend what should have been enforced? The entire CBA was based on minimum spend so why not force those teams that saved their money to spend it like they should have? Also, with only a leaguewide minimum spend but no team spend, how could they enforce the league one if Tampa can have 50m of space?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

Lots of fair questions. It seems, as though, the league and the owners were making up some stuff as they went along. But I keep coming back to the fact there's no honor among thieves. They';re all cut-throat. Jerry, somehow, thought he was immune to it

Dennis (Hampton, VA)

You keep on saying the Boys and Skins did something wrong here?? 2010 was uncapped, which the league put in place because they voided the CBA. Say what you will about what they did, ethical or not, the fact is that they didn't break any official rules, the NFL did by colluding to make player salaries lower.

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

You can say whatever you want. Bottom line: 4 teams were punished and 28 were not. Those 4 teams did something they shouldn't have done whether it was written or not. Snyder and Jerry helped put the unwritten rules in place, so I have no sympathy. It is what it is.

Jared (Dallas)

Who do you see the Cowboys going after in free agency as a backup QB? Heard ESPN's own Ed Werder mention Sean Hill and David Carr as two guys Dallas is interested in.

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

I just can't get excited about a backup QB. In the NFL, if your starter gets hurt you;re usually in big-time trouble

tc (mp) [via mobile]

the cowboys 1 round draft choices has not pan out to be all that good here lately except tyron smith dez bryant is still a child 1 round picks are overratted

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

Then why did St. Louis require 3 of them to give up the No.2 pick?

clayton (wichita falls )

hey JJT do the mavs need to make a trade

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

Nope. A new body isn't going to help this team. They need health and confidence.

Zaid (Lewisville,TX)

Finnegan, carr, or Kirkpatrick?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

carr

Gobizzle (DC)

Your idea of getting Chris Meyers in FA and drafting Decastro seems like a perfect scenario. Along with that they could even trade down maybe 5-6 spots and still get Decastro at around 20. Wouldn't that be a good reason to trade down?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

There u go again. Why trade down. Why try to outsmart everybody. Get the GUY you want and go home. You don't have to win all the time. It's called GREED. Just draft the dude and move on.

John T. Gold (Salt Lake City)

Jerry has proven that he is inept in putting together a super bowl team. Is everyone a "yes" man in that organization. It's ludicrous.

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

no, but just like at your job: the boss has the final word whether you agree or not. It ain't worth getting written out of the will

Andy (Dallas)

How about some Mavs talk? Is Cuban/Donnie looking to trade Odom, and if not should they just send him home?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

who in their right mind wants Odom. His contract is more valuable to the Mavs than his body. They'll deal with him

Andy (Dallas)

Looks like Orlando is getting desparate with DH by making him the GM-on-the-floor. How does this impact the Mavs chances this summer?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

as long as he doesn't get traded and sign a long-term deal it's all good. The Mavs remain in the hunt

John (Jersey)

JJT - don't always agree w/ ur opinion but I admire ur cahones. I dig Ben Grubbs if the price is right. Don't think DeCastro makes it down that far. Would also stay away from Finnegan in F/A and J Jenk in draft. It's Carr or bust @ CB IMHO. If they can't sign Grubbs and DeCastro or Kirkpatrick don't make it down that far...I'd look to trade down and grab more value. Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

thanks. I ain't trading down until the 4th or 5th round. I want as many of the top 100 players on MY board as I can get.

Jason (Dallas)

Do you see Laurent Robinson leaving? Would you pay him $5 million a year if that's what he can garner in free agency from other team?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

I haven't looked at the latest figures. I'd pay him whatever good No.2 receivers get paid whether that's $4M, $5M or $6M. I'm not paying him even low-level No.1 money

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

What Jerry Jones did was not illegal or against the rules, but unethical, and although the owners took care of it in a petty way, Jones and Snyder are reaping the sowing of poor ethical decisions. Poor ethics will get you every time! Im a huge Cowboy fan, but I hate seeing people try to be unethical only to claim "but it wasn't against the rules!" Follow the unwritten rules of ethics and you won't be bitten.

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

Ding Ding Ding

Wayne (Orlando ,FL)

I know you think the backup QB is not important. I bet Houston is Glad they had Yates ,when their two starters went down. On the flip side i bet some other teams were not so fortunate when their starter went down. Kitna did a pretty good job in Romo's absence.

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

I didn't say it wasn't important. I just said if your starter gets hurt, you're in trouble. Jon Kitna was terrific 2 years ago. At this time of the year, personally, I don't get hyped about the backup QB. Too much other stuff going on

clayton (wichita falls )

Hey JJT do u think the texas rangers can get back to the world series without cj wilson do they have that starter that can take lead role you think ? thanks

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

Dude, it's hard as heck to get to the World Series once. Let alone twice. Three times seems ridiculous. But they have a terrific team and if Yu can be a beast 15 wins and 3.50 ErA, then they have a shot. The AL is loaded, though, with NY, Bos, TB, Det and LAA. They could win 94 games and miss the playoffs. Don't laugh.

Justin (Arlington)

If Dwight Howard's #1 choice is to play for the Nets, what are the Mavs going to do since it seems likely that Deron Williams would stay there as well?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

There's so many rumors going on right now, I wouldn't put too much in anything I've heard. If he gets to FA, then the Mavs have a shot.

Thomas (New York)

Unwritten rules? It wasn't a rule in the first place. If I drive 35MPH in a 35MPH zone and a cop pulls me over and says "Your speeding. The speed limit is really 30MPH despite what the sign says." But the cop lets me go. Two years later, you get a ticket in the mail saying you were going 35MPH in a 30MPH zone. That makes no sense. If there's no rule to begin with, you can't be breaking anything thereby being unethical.

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

again 4 teams violated the unwritten rule and 28 didn't. Clearly, some standard was established

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Greetings JJT ? Thanks for hosting today?s chat. Gosselin at DMN recently stated that if he were Jerry Jones, he would have called Manning?s agent to talk about signing Peyton, if for no other reason than to give Romo a ?wake-up call.? Do you agree with that line of thought? Would a phone call to Manning?s agent really motivate Romo the way Gosselin suggests?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

Goose has been doing this a lot longer than me. Personally, I don't believe in send faux messages. I wouldn't want Peyton because I think his career as an elite QB is over.

Gobizzle (DC)

You said all year during the 2011 season this was a rebuilding year for the cowboys. They have some good leaders if you consider Romo Witten & DWare. How long until they can get enough mold to make the playoffs and make a serious push?

JJT
  (1:49 PM)

they need more good players. They don't have enough of them.

Andy (Dallas)

It looks like if the Mavs his the 3D homerun it could be the end of JET and Kidd in Dallas. But if the Mavs strike out in free agency, would either of them be back next year? Do we even want them both back?

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

Nothing is going to happen until the Mavs determine whether they can get D12 or Deron Williams. If both want to take one-year deals for low salaries, then they could each return. I could see Kidd doing it, but not Jet.

T. Webb (Oak Harbor)

Is it safe to say, that the people that are looking to replace Romo are crazy? Dude is the least of our problems...

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

i don't pay them any attention

Hoss (Austin)

Sir, you show a stunning lack of education in what should be a basic component of any football writer/reporter's repertoire: the idea of draft value. There are many published studies a click or two away, for the curious.

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

Considering I covered the Cowboys' beat for 11 seasons and broke stories on a regular basis. I feel pretty good about my football knowledge.

Wayne (Orlando ,FL)

JJT Do you honestly think Bennett is worth brinnging back at an increased salary over his rookie contract ?

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

I don't think Bennett wants to return. He wants to be the man and you can;t be the man when Jason Witten is the TE

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Thanks JJT. I think Goose's main point was that the Boys need something more from Romo than they're getting to win a championship. In your opinions, what are the areas of Romo's game - if any - that he needs to improve on?

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

dude had 31 TDs and 10 picks last season, one of five QBs with a +20 TD/INT difference. He can be a better decision-maker we all know that and he did that at the end of the season. The perfect player doesn't exist, but he was good last season

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

You can always tell who has taken an ethics course in college and who has not.....

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

Not really. We disagree on the importance of money and the silly notion of hometown discounts and how much money is too much money, but it doesn't make either one of us ethically superior to the other. You gonna need a ladder to get off your high horse bro...lol

JJT
  (2:01 PM)

Hey guys, this has been cool, but I gotta go see Yuuuuuuuuu this afternoon and there's going to be so much media it's going to be a zoo. We'll do it again next Tuesday after I spend the weekend in Vegas with the Rangers. Obviously, I won't tell all of the stories...lol.. Peace. Go do something nice for a stranger. Bless someone.

JJT
  (2:02 PM)

And if you have any other questions about FA, you can hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas I'll be answering FA questions all afternoon
