OK, thanks for joining the chat. Let's get started.
How do you think that Texas will do in the NCAA Men's & Women's College Basketball Tournament?
For the men they are going to have to neutralize Yancy Gates. He is tough inside and has some serious athleticism. Very hard for Texas to beat these guys. The women have to push the tempo and take care of the basketball. WVU plays a lot like TAMU in that they are on the line and up the line on defense. That means they are all over the passing lanes. Don't think either UT team can win but have more faith in men than women.
How do you feel about the Cincinnati matchup? What is the key to the game for Texas?
Well if Chapman can frustrate Gates they have a chance. Then Texas needs to figure out another scorer besides Brown. Maybe if McClellan has a 15 they will be able to pull the upset.
Ricky Williams's status is going to unveiled soon and will be the second player statue (E Campbell). Does VY get one after he retires, or does not being a Heisman winner prevent it?
VY is essentially a Heisman winner since the Reggie Bush stuff so I do not think that precludes him from having a statue. But I do think Ricky and Earl are more iconic figures around Texas so it might be a while before VY gets one.
From what I've heard Brandon Moore has been dominating. Now before I get to happy should I expect him to be a player like randall or more like Gerald McCoy.
Here is what I like about Moore: He has already been removed from one DI powerhouse - Alabama - so he knows this is his last shot. Guys who only have one shot left usually take things very seriously.
Whos your top five standout players so far?
Mike Davis, Vaccaro, Edmond, Bergeron and McFarland
Man..we made the tourney. So depending on how we hold up in this tourney how do you feel it can affect our Recruiting with C.Ridley? We could really use his signature.
All signs point to the fact that Ridley will be with Texas. But there could be some change if Kabongo does not come back. Ridley needs to play with a good point guard. Now I do not think Kabongo is outstanding but he is an adequate player who should do well with a big man.If the supporting cast is not there come April Ridley may look elsewhere.
Came across your article about the 'Wild formation. Who do YOU feel has the strongest ability at the position?
I have to say Daje Johnson or Gray. Think both have the speed and vision to handle that spot. Just need some reps when they get here in the fall.
Is texas a top 10 team in 2012-13??
Hoops? NoFootball top 10 in 2013.2012 more like 11-20 for football.
Any word on the Harrison' twins and whether Texas is still on there top list?
They love Kentucky and Kentucky loves them.
5-6 scholarships left(if Hughes gray shirts). Offered two OOS safeties. How many more do you think they are going to offer and to whom?
I am saying you are right with about five or six more offers. Here are the in-state guys you should watch out for: Dontre Wilson, Antwuan Davis, Maurice Smith, Trent Gow, Ra'Shaad Samples.
Have you seen enough video or live play from Bell, Harris, or Luke to say that they are worth risking losing Miles, Baltimore, and in state CBs? And also there was an article about Miles and his teammate Massington being a package deal, is that true and if so how does that hurt their chances at Miles with the possibility of not offering another WR?
Well, Texas has had a chance to offer Baltimore, Miles and Massington and has not done it yet. They must feel secure with those out of state guys. I know Harris is a flat-out stud, just not sure Texas can get him. Luke is more realistic. I put two in-state corners in the post below so check that out for other guys I think Texas is going try and grab.
I believe anything less than 9 wins in the regular season is a failure! Your thoughts?
I would have to agree with that assessment. Texas has a good enough schedule and a good enough defense that it should get at least nine wins and maybe 10. Worried about kicker though. Check out story on HornsNation tomorrow on that topic.
how many yards do you think malcom brown, and joe bergeron combine for ?......do you think ash will make a significant turn for the better?
Hmm good one. This year they did not play the entire season and had right around 1,300. I think next year, if they remain healthy and understanding that Gray is going to get some totes, the rushing game - meaning all of them - could be around the 2,300 yard mark.Significant turn for the better is hard to say. But i do think he will be better just not sure if it will be a quantum leap.
will texas lead the big twelve in sacks or be the best defense in the big twelve
OK, if Moore can command a double team inside - and i think he can - that should free up Jeffcoat on the outside. Okafor has the run game locked down on his side and is not going to let the quarterback squirt out there either. so everything is going to be forced into Jeffcoat's hands. He is poised to have a monster year.I think linebacker is a spot that might give Texas some trouble but beyond that, yes, Texas should have the best defense in B12.
David Ash had a statistically miserable freshman campaign, yet the coaches seem to have already settled on him as the starter. I understand that Case McCoy has a difficult time throwing the ball over 20 yard with any velocity, but shouldn't the coaching staff at least try to give more practice snaps to and possibly start Connor Brewer? I understand that Harsin's offense may be complicated, but the kid has 5 months to learn the offense that is by the way centered around the running game. What is holding the coaches back? Is Brewer actually a dud (in terms of arm strength and accuracy)? According to ESPN, he has a big arm with impressive accuracy and that sounds like a much better QB than anyone else we have on the roster. At the same time, Rivals has him listed as a similar QB to Colt McCoy, and no high school kid can be as accurate as Colt was so I'm assuming they were comparing the arm strength, which means Brewer may be just another Case McCoy. So what is the deal?
The deal is Brewer is more talented, yes. But he has no idea what he is doing right now in the system. you have to know where you are throwing it before you can throw it there. He just needs time to learn the system and what to do when. He is going to be good and has a much better upside than the other two. It just takes some time.
Why is Jalen Overstreet being overlooked and will he be a factor in the fall. Will he redshirt with Brewer this year and Swoopes next year. I know he was recruited by Harsin so what will they do with him?
The only way Overstreet does not redshirt is if he can prove he can add some value in the wild packages or on some trick packages that Harsin comes up with. Other than that he is a guy that needs some seasoning. I actually think Brewer might play some snaps this year and Swoopes will redshirt therefore giving those guys two years between them.
will steve edmund be one of the best linebackers in the country this year
Not this year but give his junior year he will be up there in the B12 and senior year, who knows. If he can keep his weight down he has that potential.
what do you think about tevin elliot d end from baylor
Tevin started about half the season and was pretty good off the edge. I think he had eight tackles for loss. Decent player. Nothing outstanding but a good college player.
What Does Cincinnati do well and what do they not do well? Who do you have Texas or Cincinnati?
The Bearcats do not shoot the ball well. They are 42 percent on the season. They also do not rebound that well. Now where they are good is that they can play at any speed. And they are very physical. Texas has to be careful with its fouls. They only have 15 to give on the inside and Gates is going to go right at them.I have Cincy but have been wrong hundreds of times before.
Who is the best individual O-Lineman in your eyes on the Texas team?
Mason Walters. I think he is going to be a very good pro. Really the entire line is very good. I like Cochran at tackle and Espinosa at center as well.
At first, it seemed Texas was going slow on the recruiting trail. Now, with the exception of DBs, they seem to be recruiting fast. How many offers do they intend on holding back so that they do not miss out on the late bloomers.
Maybe two. There are going to be a couple of guys that they are after who will wait until after the season to make their choice. So Texas may keep a few in pocket.
Which player do you foresee running the "wild horn" formation for 2012?
Gray or Daje. Not sure anyone on campus right now can do it or we would have seen him doing it already.
Was Goestenkors job saved with the Lady Longhorns tournament bid? Or does she need to win a game to be considered safe?
She is safe. She has three years left on her deal and has a 6-7 post player in the signing class. Texas does not want to lose Imani Stafford and that might have been the case had coach G been fired. Stafford is JaVale McGee's sister, btw.
Is Rick Barnes in danger of missing out on Ridley, Austin, Smart, the Harrison Twins, Randle, Jones, and Frazier? Sounds like this is the case. If so, that does not bode well for the future of Longhorns basketball. Your thoughts?
No i think he will get Ridley. He needs to be recruiting J'Covan Brown and Kabongo though. You get those two to stay, combine them with Ridley. Julien Lewis and Sheldon McClellan and you have a team.
What coaches are on the hot seat at Texas? Garrido baseball, Gail Goestenkors w bball, anyone else?
No way Garrido is on the hot seat. The guy is a legend. True they have had a rough start. But they usually finish where everybody else wants to - in the CWS. Coach G is safe as well. Check out ppost below.
What challenges/differences should the Horns anticipate seeing in this year's OU defense under Mike Stoops, as opposed to previous seasons under the guidance of Brent Venables?
Great question. OK with Stoops you are going to get more safety blitzes. He is very aggressive. Venables liked to use his linebackers to do all the dirty work and he usually had some very good ones. Stoops likes to have a big safety like a Roy Williams who can be put in a position to disrupt the play. Now Stoops did not cal for a blitz on the famed Roy Williams superman play but that is the type of play he wants to see from his DBs. Also Jackie Shipp and Stoops really work well together. They are going to maximize the d line and their impact on the game,
How is Mike Davis progressing during spring ball?
Much better than expected. We have a story on it over at HornsNation. He has been more committed to going after the ball and gotten stronger.
Is it possible this D is the best in the country next year? Best DE combination, one of the best CB combinations, one of the best safeties in the counry, an emerging DT group, and two of the most highly recruited linebackers (Hicks/Edmond) in the past three years?
Hicks and Edmond have to prove themselves. That is the main worry. Also Phillips is missing spring because of an injury so it is hard to tell how that safety spot is going to play out. But they will be very good.
Let's hear what you think David Ash's stats will be. And games he will struggle and games where he will fair well
Ah, right up my ally. Ash is going to struggle against the teams that like to blitz and throw some confusing packages his way - OU and TCU. He is also going to struggle in games that could become shootouts like WVU. And lastly just because it is in Kansas in December he will have trouble at KSU. Conditions will be a factor. As for stats I am going with 15 TDs, 7 picks and a 9-3 regular season.
Who wil prove to be the better defensive end at UT, Jeffcoat or Kindle?
Jeffcoat because he has Okafor on the other side forcing everything to him. He is going to put up big time stats if he stays healthy. His issue has been that he cannot stay healthy. Ankle as a freshman. Shoulder as a sophomore.
If you had to guess, what position will Raulerson actually play? And is it realistic to think RSJ can play WR if he's already 6'5 220 as a JUNIOR IN HS? Def want to see him at WR though not TE.
My guess on Raulerson is he is going to continue to grow and wind up at tackle. RSJ really wants to play wide receiver but Texas can sell him on the whole Jermichael Finley thing and he could be just as effective.
What are your thoughts on TJ Ford? I think he was one of the all-time great Longhorns hoops stars.
TJ was an amazing ball handler. Not a great shooter because he could get to the rim so well and did not have to shoot. He really kick started Barnes' career at Texas with the run he made. I liked him as a college player, nit sure i would have picked him in the lottery. But he averaged 11.8 and more than five assists a game for his pro career and that is not too bad.
if tx goes 7&5 this year will mac brown be fired
Not fired. Might step aside though.
you said that Kabongo leaving could cause Ridley to switch, but Felix from all reports is the real deal. your thoughts?
He could be the real deal and I have heard that as well. But would you rather have a freshman or a sophomore who now understands what it is to be in a Barnes' system. I think you would rather have the freshman as the backup and Kabongo as the starter. It would also help Kabongo in that he would have pressure put on him for playing time. That is not the case right now.
I've heard rumblings of OU being the preseason conference and perhaps even a national favorite on the baseball diamond in 2012 with the addition of some nice JUCO talent. How is that being received in Longhorn country?
Texas is worried about Texas right now. Sunny Galloway has done a great job since taking over for Larry Cochell at OU. He was a member of OU's only title team. He knows how to build a winner. But Texas is the top program in the B12 and should remain up there even if it has a down year or two.
How big of a chance do we have at landing Dontre Wilson?
Pretty good chance. The question is, does Texas really need another running back? I don't think so and think maybe they should go after more DBs.
Who do you see being our next commit?
Torrodney Prevot, the defensive end out of Houston. He is 6-4, 205 and fits what Texas wants to do on the edge.
Who needed another year in Austin the most, Avery Bradley, Jordan Hamilton, or Tristan Thompson?
Can I say all three? Thompson because of his size was going to get paid. He was just to good an athlete to pass on. The other guys could have used another year for sure.
Why has Rick Barnes struggled keeping top talent in Texas in recent years after building his program on it a la Mack Brown?
It's not just a Barnes deal. It happens all over college hoops. But Barnes has associated himself with a coach in Canada who likes to tell his players that if they go to Texas they can be in the NBA the next year. So that has been a bit of a problem.
Who else will commit for this year if you HAD to guess?
Prevot, Gow, Smith and Davis. Myaybe Luke. Those are pretty educated guesses. Beyond that I would just be guessing.
Looks like we are out of questions for the day. If you have any others just hit me up on twitter @espnstrickland. Talk to you next week.
