Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Welcome to live stakeout of the NASCAR Media Center, where the Hendrick Motorsports appeal is taking place. I have been here since 8 am. Am battling sunshine and power issues on laptop and phone, so if I disappear you'll know why. Hopefully, a decision doesn't interrupt my hour with you. fire away.

Kevin (Ohio)

When Kyle and Jimmie had to drop back at the start of the race, why doesn't NASCAR just move the entire order up and (in this case) not just the outside row? When you know who's changing engines or going to back-up cars for the race after practices on Saturday, it seems like they could make it happen without a problem.

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

They normally just move one row up. Didn't notice they didn't here, unless both were in different rows and both rows shifted forward.

mike (phila)

the 24 has had to ok finishes in the last 2 races but was never a contender to win while the other 3 hendrick cars all qualified well. As a 24 fan should i be concerned it is going to be like this all year?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Nope. Remember Stewart didn't do much all season until he made the Chase. Making the Chase and being in position is key right now. Long season.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the First Sprint Cup Series Driver to Part Ways with their Current Teams in 2012?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Kurt Busch? Heck, as tough as it is to get a ride I don't see any driver walking away. And as few good drivers there are out there I don't see a team cutting one before the season's end.

Tyler (Greenfield,NY)

Hey Newt, during the NW race Sadler was whining about the #3 not letting him pass and I wondered why Childress didn't order Diloon to move over and let Sadler pass?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

You think RC is going to order his grandson to let somebody pass? Hardly.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

If David Reutimann continues to Struggle in the #10 Chevrolet do you think that he will Part Ways with Tommy Baldwin Racing?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Only if they find somebody they believe can do beter. Reut is a good driver. Don't judge on a race or two.

Octofan (Somewhere in CT)

So Newton, is Rowdy a lock to sweep Bristol this week?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Not the way he's run so far this season.

Tyler (Greenfield, NY)

Who are you picks to do well at Bristol this week? I'm struggling in fantasy.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards

Hector (Miami)

Heard Urt lost his temper coming out of the care center and threw a water bottle. Is Urt finding out there is little fun on a team whose tire changer melts lug gun hoses on tire changes?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

If throwing a water bottle and cursing are a sign of losing it then most of the garage has lost it. Kurt needs to have som e lattitude to release frustration.

Louis (WVA)

Kyle seems to have difficulty driving on slick tracks ala Vegas & Phoenix. Is ownership deities preoccupying him and causing him to lose focus?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Hardly. Just a slow start and some misfortune. Maybe he's getting it out of the way now instead of the start of the Chase as is the norm.

KB Nation (In My Head)

You noted in an article Urt and Kyle saying they were going to win all 33 races in the 54. Are they finding out it is not so easy without JGR equipment?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Well, they are 0-for-3. Evidence speaks for itself.

Mike Huntswet (Cooter, MO)

Did Kurt Busch have an episode after his crash Sunday? I've heard he threw a water bottle, but others said it was no big deal.

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

I am with those that say no big deal.

Ann Alingus (Butte)

I can't believe Trevor Bayne won't be racing this weekend. Is there a good possibility we could see him with another team by the end of the season? Ford is loaded with younger talent having Stenhouse in NW, and now that Keselowski and Allmendinger will be in the fold next year.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Ford believes Trevor and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. are their future. Jack Roush in particular does and he owns their contracts, so no way either will be let go this or next season.

Jack Package (New York City)

JGR really struggled on Sunday at Vegas. Is it a chassis issue or are they down HP now that they are using TRD engines?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Not sure. Probably just as bad race. Denny won the previous week at Phoenix and Joey Logano has two top 10s and was 16th at Vegas. Wouldn't read a lot into that one race, although it could be an indicator of what to see in future 1.5-mile races.

Frank White (NY)

Doesn't it makes sense for the NW series to get back to it roots? The short tracks would be a way of leveling the playing field. There were a lot of slow cars running around in LV on Saturday because they are way down on horsepower and aero package.

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I do like the idea of more short tracks, but you're not going to see that as long as the 1.5 mile tracks demand the NW series to pair with a Cup race.

Frances the Praying Mantis (NY)

Is there any chance of us seeing Steve Wallace run a race this year?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Do you really want to see that? I have seen no indication that will happen.

Don Juan (TX)

I'm a huge Jennifer Jo Cobb fan and it was nice to see her finally get some TV time on Saturday. Danica always seems to steal her thunder.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Yep. And if Danica struggles you'll see other drivers get more time.

mike (phila)

the hendrick cars so far have looked fast this season with the exception of the 24. i know he has had 2 decent finishes but should i be worried with the lack of speed so far?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

No. Alan and Jeff will figure out what the other three cars are doing and you'll see them pick up the pace. Way too early to worry.

Kurt Busch (NC)

I'm starting to feel like John Wes Townley.

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

You should.

steve (pa)

whats wrong with the 24 car? do you still see him as a title contender?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

A lot of concern for the 24 today. Too early to push the panic button. That Gordon has gotten decent finishes out of the cars is a sign he can contend.

Don Juan (TX)

What do you think of my fantasy team for this week? I have Mark Martin, Robby Gordon, Trevor Bayne, Danica Patrick and Kevin Conway.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I think you are in trouble, unless getting zero points is a positive.

Octofan (Somewhere in CT)

How do you think Neumen is handling Stert's recent success with his new crew chief?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I don't think he's really paying a lot of attention. Newman has a pretty good crew chief in Tony Gibson.

Dane (NJ)

Who is going to be first driver to lose their ride in NW? With Bayne and Vickers available it's only a matter of time. I'll say Brian Scott - no one does less with more than him.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Bayne isn't really available because he's under contract. Vickers is available but not a lot of demand for him. Scott might be a candidate to lose his job, but I believe his family brings money to the JGR table.

Blanco (Room 112)

When did this sport become "ride around and then race last 50 laps?". First it was Carl Edwards complaining about Stenhouse last year, now it's Elliott Sadler complaining about Austin Dillon. It's even worse in the cup series with guys routinely pulling over and letting people pass.

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

It's been that way for a long time. David Pearson used to always show up at the end. Not sure the complaints have anything to do with that, though. It's hard to pass in both series. Can't say I blame a guy for fighting to keep a position.

Christopher Wallace (NYC)

The food bill at Stewart Haas must be epic.

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

You should see all the food people are brining to the R&D stakeout.

Mike Oxcurved (Johnson City)

Is the financial situation at Dover any better than it was last year? If not, there a possibility of one of those races going to Iowa in the near future?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

NASCAR would love to give Iowa a race, but not so sure it would want to give up one of its shorter tracks to do it. Better to eliminate a race from an intermediate track. Plus, Dover gets a bad rap. People should take advantage of a race there, see the coast.

Don Juan (TX)

Since Vegas was packed as usual I think it deserves a second race. Maybe take one away from Martinsville which never has a good crowd. At least the drivers can race at vegas without running into each other.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Are you crazy. Martinsville is one of the best races of the year. Plus its one of only four on half-mile tracks. And what's so bad about running into each other from time to time? No, I don't think Vegas needs a second race that badly.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Folks, I'm told something could be coming on the appeal shortly. I'm going to leave for a few minutes. If nothing happens I'll be back. If it does, please understand.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

You probably gathered if you follow me on twitter that the commission upheld NASCAR's decision. Hendrick plans to take it to the next level with a final appeal. Meanwhile, Knaus and Malec will be with the 48 team at Bristol.

Andy (Kentucky)

Is a quick decision by the panel bad news for #48?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

It was this time.

Jay (D)

Do you personally think JJ and Knaus deserve this penalty?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

I believe it is too steep. The car never went on the track. Never went through initial inspection.

Den (Work)

Hey Newt! I say," Once an "innovator" always an "innovator"" With that said who is going to replace Knaus atop the box this weekend at Bristol? The last time Knaus was suspended they had a good replacement in Grubb. Who can take over the #48 if the "innovator" gets suspended?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Chad will be there until the second appeal is heard.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Folks, I have to go write my column on today's happenings. Thanks for those who participated and put up with me following the appeal during the chat. Promise to get to more qustions next week.
