Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

Hello and welcome to the first chat since the start of free agency. I know you all have questions, so let's get right to them.

Sean Peters (DC)

Hey Dan, what are your thoughts on what the possible departure of London Fletcher could mean for a young Redskins defense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

I think it would be a mistake for them to let him go. I know they're getting younger and he's 37 and so that doesn't obviously mesh. But he's a special case. He's like having another coach on the staff -- and one who's actually on the field with the guys during games. I know they love having their young linebackers around him, they love the leadership he brings on the field and in the locker room and that they want to have him back. I still think they'll keep him. As to why they haven't yet, I can't help you.

Beau (Up North)

It does not seem that the Giants have much planned for the upcoming season in regards to the o-line. We have Center and Right Gaurd but after that who know? What do you see the Giants doing on the line?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

I think they believe Will Beatty will be back, and they want to give him a shot to develop as the left tackle. I think they'll find a right tackle in free agency and/or the draft, and they don't they can move David Diehl over there. They liked the way Kevin Boothe played at left guard last year, and they believe Mitch Petrus is a comer. They like their depth on the interior, will look to add a tackle.

Logan (Dallas)

Dan, if you had to pick today who wins the East in 2012?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

I don't. So I won't. Sorry.

Danny (H-Town)

Talent Grade being equal, which position should the cowboys draft at #14 - OG, DE, OLB, CB?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

I'd vote for OLB by a nose over CB, assuming it's a guy with big-time pass-rushing skills.

Danatio (Philly)

Mr Pineapple, Have you heard anything about the Eagles talking to any linebackers? I know there was the Gerald McCoy twitter rumor of Lofton to Philly, but has anything happened there? Are they thinking their current group will just improve this offseason?

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

No, I think they'll add. And this might help answer the Fletcher question, too, but the LB market has developed very slowly. Very few linebackers have signed at all, and the ones at the top of the market have yet to find homes. It's not a position teams really prioritize, and the Eagles are smartly waiting to see what develops rather than jumping the market and overpaying.

Shane (D.C.)

Is Cedric Griffin going to be a backup CB or the FS for the Redskins?

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

It's a good question. I know they like DeJon Gomes, who was a rookie last year, at safety, but I'm not sure if they think he's ready to start this year. I wonder if Griffin's role is almost a hybrid and could depend on what else develops for them roster-wise. For instance, had they signed Aaron Ross, I'd have said it looks like Griffin will play more safety. Since they didn't, maybe he's a nickel corner. TBD, I would think.

CP (Brooklyn)

Dan, do you think Martellus Bennett will thrive in the Giants system?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

For all the justified abuse Bennett took in Dallas as a disappointment, he was a very good blocking TE. I think he could be a nice pickup for the Giants if he can become a reliable pass-catcher. They don't need him to catch 60-70 balls, but if he can contribute something around 40 and block the way he did in Dallas, I bet they'll be happy.

Chris (Las Vegas)

Will you be watching Baylor's pro day tomorrow to get a look at the Redskins new QB?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

Yes. In fact, I believe we'll be streaming it live on ESPN.com.

Anders Møller (Denmark)

What roster upgrades do the Eagles need to make, to be considered a Super Bowl contender?

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

I think they need to add at least two linebackers.

Hanson (DC)

Does lossing Ross hurt the Giants more than some want to admit? No he wasn't All Pro level but even average starting quality CBs are at a premium in the NFL?

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

If Terrell Thomas comes back healthy and Prince Amukamara develops, they won't feel the loss of Ross, I don't think.

Danatio (Philly)

Did you break anything in your house when NC State beat Georgetown?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

No, but not for lack of trying.

Christopher (Montgomery, Maryland)

Are the Redskins going to resign Tim Hightower? He was having a pretty good season before he got hurt.

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

They have to figure out where he is health-wise first. If he's healthy, they definitely want him back. They feel he contributes not just as a runner but also in the passing game as a receiver and a blocker. They like both of their young RBs, but their ideal situation is a healthy Hightower with Helu and Royster backing him up. If he's not healthy or if he goes somewhere else, I believe they'll add a veteran of some sort.

Jason (VA)

I've seen some mock drafts shift with the Giants taking RB David Wilson instead of a TE with their first pick (after the signing of Martellus Bennett). Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

I believe the Giants will take the highest-ranked player still on their board, regardless of position. This is a prediction in which I am extremely confident.

Max (Dallas)

So do you think Jerry Jones has finally learned or is this a reflection on Garrett? The FA moves have been very impressive

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

I think Jerry Jones really wants Jason Garrett to be a successful head coach and that the past two offseasons -- in terms of player moves and coaching staff moves -- show that he's willing to allow him a lot of leeway to do things his way.

Corey (D.C.)

What if Ryan Tannehill is on the board at #32 and he is the highest rated player on the Giant's board?

Dan Graziano
  (12:13 PM)

Then I believe they'd take him. But he's not getting past 8.

Tim (Portland)

How are the Redskins going to address their o-line concerns (RT, and depth at Guard) this offseason? Doesn't seem like a priority to them thus far for some reason, even with a rookie QB that will need protecting...

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

The only O-line candidate I know that they've had in for a visit is Demetrius Bell, who can be the RT, but he has yet to sign there or anywhere else. As for guard, I think they'd bring Lichtensteiger back if healthy. There are still guys out there for them.

Alex (Md)

Why don't u think the redskins went after a bigger RB like tolbert or a peyton hillis who was cheap nd drafted by shanny. Also we can never score in the redzone we could with a bigger more physical back.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

Do you know that there are 32 NFL teams whose fans are convinced their biggest problem is red-zone offense?

John (Hagerstown, MD)

Whatever happened to the Assante Samuel trade? Is it going to happen? Who's taking it? What kind of deal can Philly expect? Go Eagels!!!!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

Still more than a month until the draft, so it's not as though they've missed some deadline. They're smart to wait out the FA market and see if someone gets desperate and makes them a big offer. And they have the cap space to carry him if no one does.

Sean Peters (DC)

why are you the coolest blogger in the milky way?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Practice. Upbringing. Raw talent. Dedication. Diet. Really, a combination of a lot of things.

Alex (Md)

What about Eric Winston nd realease jammall brown

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Winston signed with the Chiefs.

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

You're reading too much into it. No one's been active in addressing LBs. Almost all of the LBs that were available at this time last week still are. They'll get someone.

Will Kelland (New York City)

With the linebacker market moving so slowly and the general lack of interest teams are showing, do you think it's likely Giants restructure/cut anybody and go sign Tullocj or Lofton?

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

No I do not. I believe they'll bring back Goff.

Chris (Giants Land, NJ)

Have you come to accept that the Giants will NEVER address the linebacker position?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Yeah, they just don't see it as a priority. But you know, I've questioned the Giants a lot over the past year, and they kind of came up with the last laugh a little bit, so...

Steve (Bristol)

Regarding your post about the Skins going down the arbitration road with the cap thing, do you see anything coming out of this? Anyway Jerry doesn't tag along if the Skins go this route? Best possible scenario?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

I think the best possible scenario is some kind of settlement that reduces the amount of the penalty. But I think it's unlikely. The way the CBA is worded allows the league to do pretty much whatever it wants on this kind of thing.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Dan, I saw some Cowboy fans who indicated their team should sign Tim Tebow. Given that the Cowboys have Romo as their QB with Orton now backing him up, how can that make sense??

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

It does not.

Ankit (Laurel, MD)

do you believe eagles will stick with nate allen, jarrett and coleman as their safeties?

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

Yeah. I think they'll bring in a veteran to maybe compete with or push those guys, but they're committed to those guys and I believe they'll continue to give them opportunities to start.

Peyton (Minnesota)

I find it hard to believe that the Cowboys would draft a corner in the first round and he would play the 4th spot with Scandrick, Jenkins, and Carr already taking the first 3 spots.

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

I guess, but Jenkins is always hurt and Scandrick's really just a nickel corner. You can't be too deep at that position. The Giants took a CB in the first round last year even though they didn't appear to need one. It's not a terrible idea, if you really like the player.

Robert Griffin III (DC)

am i a fit for the redskins offense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Yes. I think you'll work out very nicely for them.

Caz (Dallas)

Why aren't the Cowboys looking at Tracy Porter from the Saints?

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

They picked out Carr as their top CB target and got him. So maybe they don't want to spend any more big FA bucks on the position. If they want to augment CB some more, my sense is they'll look to do so in the draft.

Ben (Philly)

Plaxico really a logical move for the Eagles?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

Yeah, if it's cheap and if he'll accept that specific role in the offense (i.e., not a starting WR but a red-zone and short-yardage threat).

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

If the Cowboys do look for a DB at #14, any chance they'd go safety instead of corner?

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

Sure. The Barron kid from Alabama has shown up there in a few mocks.

stucky (NE D.C.)

Do you think D.Bell would be an upgrade over J.Brown? And I think the Skins may draft an OG late but K.Lich will be back and Chester is serviceable and now Hurt has experinecne as a depth player.

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

The issue with Brown is this hip injury he can't seem to get over. They love him as a player but aren't sure the extent to which they can count on him physically. So the answer is yes, as long as Bell can stay healthy.

jedi (New York City)

quentin coples will fall to the giants and he will be taught the ways of the force by jedi masters tuck jpp and osi and the giants will win the next ten superbowls and restore peace to the galaxy. That is all

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

OK.

Shareef (Durham NC)

Do you think that the Eagles will find a backup running back in the draft or free-agency

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

Yes. (That was a yes or no question, right?)

Mike (Pittsburgh)

Are the Eagles going to stick with Kafka and Edwards as backups for the injury prone Vick? after Kafka's unimpressive performance last year and Edwards inconsistent play in Buffalo should they pick up a veteran free agent

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

I think they can do better, yes. There are a few options still out there, but they picked up Edwards because they liked what they saw in his workout and they wanted to have someone in that spot in case they couldn't find a high-quality backup on the FA market.

Shareef (Durham NC)

LOl! no that was a witch one Question!

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Oh. Sorry. Free agency.

Bobby Brown (Best Buy)

Any rumors on who will take Steve Smith (PHI) or Brandon Jacobs?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

I did hear the Rams talked to Smith. Haven't heard anything about Jacobs.

Ankit (Laurel, MD)

eagles should go out and sign brandon Jacobs. agree or disagree?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

I think that would make sense, yes.

cbarrett (North Cackalacky)

Tell Shareef I said good usage of the word "witch". Thanks.

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Yeah, Shareef, come on. Step up your spelling game here.

Evan (Denver)

Word is Colts management like RGIII better than Luck but Isray likes Luck better than RGIII. At the end of the day, who will be at #2 for the Skins?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

I think the Colts take Luck, but if they don't, the Redskins will be happy to.

Mike (S.D)

Dan,DO we see the cowboys addressing the 3rd WR slot at all in free agency or early in the draft? i dont think anything we have after dez and miles is suitable, not to mention the injury history these two have sustained.

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

I think they will address the third WR situation exactly the way they did last year -- not sweat it, pick up a guy or two if they find someone they like and wait for the best candidate to emerge.

Ankit (Laurel, MD)

my friend adam jones thinks the redskins can compete now if they bring in rg3 and these receivers? do you see something like what happened with cam newton with the panthers or better or worse?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

The Panthers didn't, really, compete this year, in spite of how well Newton played. The rookie QBs who've been to the playoffs lately -- guys like Andy Dalton, Mark Sanchez and Joe Flacco -- have all played on teams that had established monster defenses. The Redskins' defense must play very well next year to put Griffin in a position to be a playoff quarterback. It has the potential to do so.

skooler (back in his office)

hey Pineapple, stop ignoring me!it's been quiet in Giants land thus far. I'm guessing they'll make some noise on day 2 of the draft. thoughts!?!!?

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

I think they like it quiet, and will keep it so.

Jay (NY)

Jets fan here, what are we getting with Landry assuming he's heathly?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

You cannot assume he's healthy, because he is not. He is not a guy who needs to "stay healthy" in order to be productive. He's a guy who needs to "become healthy" in order to get on the field. I think your team has signed a $4 million headache.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I really don't care if the Redskins end up with Luck or RG3, just happy they're getting one of them.

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

I believe this sums up the feeling in the Redskins' front office.

George Dubya (Texas)

How long do you ya think the Cowboys will ya know, justifize, keepin' Romo?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

As long as he keeps, ya know, playing great.

Hanson (DC)

Do you see the Giants blueprint of try to pretty good at all things and not worry about being great at anything as the new"best way to win in the NFL)?

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

I dispute the premise of your question. I felt the Giants were great at passing the football, catching the football and rushing the passer in 2011.

Dave (PA)

If the Redskins held a renaming contest, what would you submit? The Washington _________

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

Jeez. Almost anything, really. I can't believe they still have that name. Senators? I don't know.

Dan Snyder (Washington)

Have I been doing a good job the last two years?

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

Looks to me like you're keeping your promise to stay in the background and let Shanahan and Allen make the decisions. So, yeah.

Ed (England by way of SC)

are you as hungry as I am?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

I'm actually starving. Forgot to eat before the chat. Big mistake.

House (New Jersey)

Luck and RG!!!, who's Peyton, who's Leaf?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

How about if they're both Eli?

Corey (D.C.)

Does the signing of Dan Conner push back the development of Bruce Carter?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Well, it allows more time for said development. If Carter comes quickly, he'll force his way into playing time. If not, they have coverage there.

Dan Graziano (ESPN)

IM GOING IN ALL CAPS SO YOU RESPONDSHOULD THE SKINS BE CONCERNED IF THEY GET LUCK INSTEAD OF RG3... I AM MORE PARTIAL TO RG3, ARE YOU?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

NO, I THINK THEY'LL BE ECSTATIC EITHER WAY.

London Fletcher (?)

Any truth to the fact that I want to sign with the Rams so I can go play in London?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

You know, in London, they just call him "Fletcher."

Scott (Boston, MA)

Whyd the redskins give Garcon so much money? Seems they could've gotten better value with Lloyd or Meachem, among others.

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

Well, Lloyd's five years older, and I think they really see Garcon as a good fit in their offense, as well as a young guy who can grow with their 22-year-old QB.

Ed (England by way of SC)

do you know what they call a big mac in Amsterdam?

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Quarter pounder is Royale with cheese. I assume Big Mac is still Big Mac.

jebennett (glen burnie, md) [via mobile]

what was the most important move made by a nfce team this offseason? **cough** rg3 **cough**

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Yes. The Redskins' trade up to the No. 2 pick in the draft was the biggest, most significant, most important and most necessary move any of these four teams has made this offseason and is likely to remain so.

Ankit (Laurel, MD)

my friend adam jones wants to know why you despise laron landry?

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

I don't even know the guy. How can I despise him? All I've written are the facts of his case, plus my incredulity over the insistence of almost everyone else to disregard them.

Santana Moss (The U)

Dan, since Shanahan brought in two new wideouts, what does this mean for me?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

I think you'd be wise to play more like the 2010 version of yourself than the 2011 version...

Ed (England by way of SC)

Do you see Jaiqwuan Jarret stepping up this year? Otherwise, is it time to start talking bust?

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

I don't see how you can call a second-round pick a bust in his second year. Honestly, I'm amazed that anyone succeeds in sports anymore, considering how little a chance we give them.

Dave (Charlotte)

Dan, are you surprised Peyton went to Denver?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

A little, because San Francisco looks so much like the better team. But I guess he really wanted to be in the AFC.

James (DC)

What concerns you the most about the Skins current roster? What would you improve next if you were Danny Boy?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

I'd sign London Fletcher next.

Ben (Philly)

Tebow to Eagles make sense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

I don't think so.

John Thompson III (DC) [via mobile]

When will I stop choking in the tournament?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Man, I wish I knew. Love everything about you except your March record.

Stop Ignoring Me (Long Island NY)

Giants signing Tolbert. Is it in the cards for the near future or at all?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Well, he signed a four-year deal with the Panthers, so not in the cards for the NEAR future, if you ask me.

adam (laurel, Md)

do you think the redskins defense will be just as good as last year with the departures?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

I know we keep hitting the same point, but I really do think it depends on whether they bring back Fletcher.

Dave Busch (Clinton, NJ)

Have the redskins ignored their 18 mil in cap space reduction with their signings?

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

No, they can't ignore it, or the league wouldn't approve the contracts. They were just so far under to begin with that it hasn't hurt them much.

Ben (Philly)

How do the Eagles have so much cap room?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

They know how to manage the cap. They make it a priority and have people who are very good at it.

Peyton Manning (Denver)

can you say highest paid QB liability in league history? eh?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

Yeah, I don't understand the numbers there. But it ain't my money.

Mookman31 (DC)

Dan, is Eli Manning an elitr quarterback?::rests chin pensively on his fist, anticipating Dan's response::

Dan Graziano
  (12:51 PM)

I don't know. Define "elitr."

Alex (Austin)

You always repeatedly say you aren't a fan of any NFL teams, but the best in your business (Simmons, Wilbon) openly admit to being homers and it makes their writing more personable and entertaining. Why don't you just embrace a bias towards your favorite team?

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

Well, I can't make it up. Those guys have favorite teams. I don't. You want me to lie?

Ryan (Work (shhhh))

Can Fletcher to the Giants happen? Not enough cap room, they view him as too old, or not interested in LB at all?

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

Combination of all of those, I think.

DocKimble (WV)

Giants chances of drafting a DE at #31

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

Well, they'd have to trade up...

Phil (CA)

Come on Dan, whats so dumb about my Eagles trading for Stewart question, it seems like a good idea if the Panthers don't ask for to much right?

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

Yeah, but if you're the Panthers, why wouldn't you ask for a lot?

Milroyigglesfan (anchorage AK)

Dan,Ne'er a peep out of you regarding the eagles picking up two interior linemen yesterday.Did "ESPN Staff" drop the ball again, or are you going to 'fess up to another error of omission on an eagles storyline?

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

I mean, I tweeted it. Didn't strike me as significant enough for a post. They're backups, right? Camp bodies?

Andrew (Richmond)

Is Fred Davis worth the Franchise offer or was he just the skinniest girl at fat camp last year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

No, the franchise number for TEs was very low, and considering how productive Davis was before his suspension, it was more than worth it. No-brainer, really.

Chris (Hudson Valley NY)

Regarding Phil (CA) - If the Saints lose their first rounder for bountygate, the GMEN have the #31 pick...

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Ah. Touche.

Jug (La Jolla, CA)

Is Willie Smith a possible starter at RT next year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

They like him, but they're not convinced he's a starter yet. I guess he could change their minds in camp.

Ryan (Work (shhhh))

Dan is Orton really just a backup in Dallas or does Jerry starting to have doubts about Romo?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

It's the first thing you said.

Henry (MD)

Is Perry Riley the future starting ILB?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

I think he's the current one!

Lesean McCoy (Philly)

Will I get paid sooner? or Later?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

I think a little bit later. But it looks to me as though they're making keeping their in-house guys a real priority.

Corey (D.C.)

So much for DeSean getting traded...though everyone outside the media knew that would never happen anyway...it was an exagerrated story from the beginning.

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

I mean, he lowered his asking price pretty dramatically, no? Weren't all of the predictions about him not signing based on the possibility that he wouldn't?

Rick (Milwaukee, WI)

How come we've never seen you and Bob Saggett from Full House in the same room at the same time?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Because "Entourage" cut all of my scenes.

Justin (Orlando)

Is there a realistic chance of the Eagles getting Tulloch?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Yeah, but it sounds like Detroit is the favorite.

Andy Reid (Philadelphia)

Hey Dan, do you think I should quit coaching if we don't get to the Super Bowl next year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

No, I wouldn't quit. The money's good, right?

Mike (DeKalb)

Who cares about the Eagles!!! Let me hear about a winning team!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

We only had one this year.

josh (SLC, UT)

what happens to brandon graham with cole and babin entrenched at the DE positions for philly?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Well, if he's healthy, they'll find ways to rotate him in. Washburn would love a chance to get Cole and Babin a breather every now and then.

Jug (La Jolla, CA)

Will Snyder let Shanny stay through his contract if the Skins bottom out again?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Gotta think the Griffin pick buys Shanahan at least two years, right? Maybe not all three.

Martin (King City, CA)

Will practicing against Carr's press coverage help the Boys WR's get off the line in real action? Seems like they don't do well against the press.

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

That's not a bad thought.

Giants fan (Eagles country)

Is there player on the Giants we should watch out for in 12/13 that we're not hearing about?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Probably.

The Dude (dallas, texas)

How can the argument about the Cowboys not winning with tony romo be tired when the point of the game is to win championships? romo has only won one playoff game, his stats don't justify him being untouchable.

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

Yes they do.

Mr. W (maybe you'll answer my Q next time)

can i get at least 1 question next time

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

Sure. Next time it is. See you all next Tuesday. Same bat-time...
