Chat with Tim MacMahon

Tim MacMahon
  (4:01 PM)

Thanks for joining me. It's amazing how the Mavs can go from awful to awesome in a week and a half, but they look like legit contenders again after getting a little rest. Fire away.

Kevin M (Jax, FL)

Am I crazy to think the Mavs are poised to make a late push? Once they get West/Haywood back, w/ LO playing a lot better w/ more passion/enthusiasm, Dirk back to form, it looks like there aren't a lot of other west teams that could beat them in 7.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:02 PM)

Not crazy at all. If this team has fresh legs and good health entering the playoffs, they'll have a chance to make some serious noise. And the schedule-makers did the Mavs a huge favor at the end of the season. They have four days off before their regular-season finale.

Brian M (College Station)

Hey Tim, what happens when Delonte West comes back? Do you see Roddy returning to the bench and getting "garbage time" minutes or do you see a veteran like Terry or Carter having their minutes reduced? It'd be a shame to stop playing him when he's elevated his game!

Tim MacMahon
  (4:04 PM)

Great question. I don't see Roddy B being taken out of the rotation if he keeps producing, but he's not going to keep playing 35 minutes per night like he has the last two games. I mentioned on the blog this morning that I see most of Carter's minutes coming at small forward. That could mean less playing time for Lamar Odom. West will probably be the primary backup PG. The Mavs need his toughness and intensity.

Sahar (Israel)

Waive Yii or Williams and sign JJ Hickson to give us depth at both F positions.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:05 PM)

Doesn't sound like JJ Hickson is interested in being a bit player for a title contender. He wants to go to a team that will give him significant minutes so he can restore his value entering free agency.

Chief (Frisco, TX)

Are the Mavs considering to add JJ Hickson or Ryan Hollins to their lineup?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:06 PM)

Ryan Hollins had a rep as a knucklehead after his brief time in Dallas and has proven it pretty much every time he has faced the Mavs since then. Plus, Ian Mahinmi and Brandan Wright are better players.

Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)

Clearly Dirk has slapped Father Time in the face. Dirk looked like he had the same desire and determination last night against the Nuggets, like he had in the championship run.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:07 PM)

That's probably the best all-around game Dirk has played all season. If he can perform like that in the playoffs, anything is possible.

Jimmy (LR)

Will there be longer breaks during the playoffs? Seems like the days off are really helping the Mavs.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:07 PM)

There might be some back-to-backs in the first round, but it's not a major concern. There will be much more rest during the playoffs than the regular season.

Deven (Buffalo, NY)

Hi Tim. Fact or Fiction: D-Will is a lock for the Dallas Mavericks next year.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:08 PM)

Lock is too strong. I'd go with likely.

TheMavsFanatic (Phoenix, AZ)

Do you think this latest run has more to do with getting days off in between, or could it be that it's almost playoff time, and the Mavs have a renewed focus?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:09 PM)

Rest is the primary reason, but there is also a renewed focus. The Mavs were embarrassed by their 2-7 stumble out of the All-Star break. They see 10 straight games against playoff foes as a challenge and so far have responded as well as anyone could hope.

Evan Armstrong (DC)

Jason Terry is being a knucklehead, any possibility Mavs resign him in the off season?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:10 PM)

Can't rule it out, but he'd probably have to take a huge pay cut for it to happen. And Jet isn't interested in taking a major pay cut.

Naveed (NewJersey)

Should Mavericks Consider adding a defense first type player like James Posey or some other guy , to have Shawn Marion, Delonte West, Jason kidd and one more player who can guard

Tim MacMahon
  (4:11 PM)

They'll add Delonte West hopefully next week. The Mavs have a full roster and I don't see them being players in the buyout-vet market unless something falls in their lap.

g (Fort Worth)

Hey Tim, I'm slowly coming to terms with Jet not returning next yr as a Mav but I was wondering what is the possibility of signing Delonte West for a few yrs?.. He's plays hard every time he?s on the court?(unlike the other one) and his "energy" is something players seem to rely on. Never thought I would be a fan he?s really made an impression. Also, after going through a slump Ian has really stepped up in Haywoods absence. He?s clearly improved from last yr. Do you think he will ever be a starter somewhere?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:13 PM)

West has been great for the Mavs, but I'd be surprised if they make a long-term commitment to him. It's a similar situation to J.J. Barea or DeShawn Stevenson. They aren't trying to eat up cap space with role players. As far as Mahinmi goes, it'll be interesting to see what the market is for him this summer when he's a free agent. I think he's made himself a lot of money this year.

Andrew (Dallas)

Why didn't the Mavs try to get Gilbert Arenas?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:13 PM)

Because they don't need a washed-up gunner who would be a huge distraction.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

What has changed about the Mavs that has them playing so well? I say it's the rest with more days off and the fact that the bench is shorter due to the injuries, leaving guys with no one else to depend on....what say you Tim?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:14 PM)

It's the rest and sense of urgency. Depth is a strength for this team. They're winning despite Haywood, Marion and West being out. All of those guys will play key roles if the Mavs make a playoff run.

Eric (Abilene)

The first half last night was the best I have seen any team look this year. Where has that been? Was it just that they hit shots or has there been real disention in the ranks due to summer 2012 plans?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:16 PM)

The Mavs' offensive struggles have been due to a lot of factors -- Dirk's slump, tired legs, lack of continuity, not enough practice time. Last night was a reminder of how good things can be if this team gets right.

Eric (Abilene)

Looks like the mavs are finally playing quality ball but is it too late. I looked at the schedule this morning and it is brutal. Are they endanger of missing the playoffs?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:17 PM)

Why is it too late? Were the playoffs two weeks ago? The Mavs aren't going to miss the playoffs. Back away from the ledge. This team is a threat if it's healthy and fresh at the end of April.

Aaron (noosa, queensland)

do you worry that if we play the thunder in the series that they will get every single call? I do not fear durant as a player, i fear all the calls he gets. i am 100% convinced that westbrook is the best player on that team, what do you think?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:18 PM)

Aaron, if you don't respect Kevin Durant as a player, I assume that the liquor in Queensland is awfully strong. I think there has been some bad officiating in the last two Mavs-Thunder games, but I don't see it as some great conspiracy. You think David Stern would conspire to have the OKC market in the spotlight? The Thunder will get more calls than the Mavs because OKC attacks the basket more.

Eric (Abilene)

Dirk was great last night everyone knows how good he was but I came away really encouraged by B. Wright. He was everywhere. Is he in the long term plans for the team. Love his game last night.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:19 PM)

Brandan Wright has been a great bargain for the league minimum. The Mavs have a team option on him next season, so I'd expect that he'll be back. His energy and athleticism is intriguing, to say the least. He's the best shot-blocker and finisher on the team, and he has a nice knack for cutting to the hoop at the right time.

Jack (Dallas)

Greg Oden?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:20 PM)

If it's a no-risk deal this summer, why not? But that's just speculation. I haven't heard anything about him from Mavs front office types, but I haven't asked about him, either.

Ian (Fort Worth)

Tim, Do you think Rick will move back to the Marion/Jet bench tandem with VC playing well at the 3 in the starting lineup?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:21 PM)

No. If Marion is healthy, he'll be the starter. Rick values him as a defensive tone-setter. Plus, they don't want to play Carter too many minutes. They've gotten away with 30-plus minutes from Carter the last two games, but that isn't the long-term plan.

Eric (FL)

Jason Kidd has two straight games with double-digit assists. Can he continue this streak against the Lakers tomorrow?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:22 PM)

That probably depends on how well the Mavs shoot the ball. Kidd has been able to sit out the fourth quarter of three of the last four games, so his legs are fresh right now.

Ricky (Houston)

Hey T-Mac. What do you think are the odds are Terry get's resigned after this year? I think even though he is streakey at times, what he can bring is way more valuable. Plus as a die hard fan I don't think I can stand to see him in another uniform.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:23 PM)

Ricky, brace yourself to see Jet in another uniform next year. That's much more likely than him re-signing with the Mavs.

Franc (Montreal)

T-Mac, other than Odom, who else do you see making way for Deron's 16-17 mil salary (assuming he signs with Mavs) this summer? JET, J-Kidd, Matrix or Haywood?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:25 PM)

They would have to amnesty or trade Marion or Haywood to make it happen. It will be an interesting decision if they have to choose one or the other. Small forwards are easier to find, but Marion has been such a huge part of this team. For Jet and Kidd to come back, they'd probably have to take the mid-level or vet minimum. Don't see that happening with Jet, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Kidd comes back as Williams' backup. Kidd has already said he'd be willing to do that.

Jimmy (LR)

What teams do the Mavs want to avoid in playoffs? Which teams are more favorable matchup-wise?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:26 PM)

The Mavs say they don't fear anybody in the West, and I believe them. OKC is the toughest matchup on paper, but I think the Mavs have some mental mojo over the Thunder, especially when it comes to crunch time in the playoffs.

Aaron (noosa, queensland)

I respect Durant but he does not scare me like kobe, westbrook, howard, lebron, wade, duncan, etc do.I am not sure it is the liquor so much as the Sun out here, Mr. Macmahon.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:27 PM)

I'm much higher on Durant than you are. I think he's the best player in the West. In my opinion, it's a two-man race between him and LeBron for MVP.

Marc (Spain)

Assume we ammensty Haywood, which of the those centers is most likely to come to the mavs?Hibbert ? Brook Lopez? Javelle M?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:30 PM)

I think they'll all be too expensive, and I don't think the Mavs would want McGee anyway. I'd expect them to try to get a veteran big on a one-year deal to keep their powder dry for a potential run at Dwight Howard next summer. Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby make sense.
