Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I'm here!!

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Sorry everyone-slight tech issues now resolved. Let's get going. This time, I'll post some great movie lines for you. Send me classics.

Nick (OB)

Dare I say TT is COY again??

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes.

Heath (Dallas)

Hey coach, do you have a feel for how well Sessions and Bryant will work in the same backcourt?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Should be good. Nice move my LA.

Trevor (Utah)

Coach, love your work! The young guys are playing really well for the Jazz right now (Favors, Kanter, Burks, Hayward). Isn't it time for Coach Corbin to give less playing time to Jefferson and Bell and see what these young guys can do?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I think so, yes.

James (Florida)

Do you think the Suns training team could help rejuvenate Oden's career?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I do not.

James (Canada)

Would wearing ankle weights while practicing help me increase my leg strength, to increase my vertical jump?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

No, but they will help you get shin splints.

Dennis (Toronto)

Do you see Tristan Thompson being a long term solution at Center? Great game for him last night! Flash in the pan or consistant performer in the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Future stud.

Eric (LA)

If Clips matched up with OKC in the playoffs, would Westbrook be a matchup nightmare for CP3?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

He's a problem for whomever they are playing.

Stephen (Ok)

Should the Thunder pursue Derek Fisher? How much does that big game experience offset his declining skills?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I'd sign him. Nice to have come playoff time.

robb (south dakota)

when and if at all would the pacers look to add oden to the roster, ive heard hes interested in the pacers but obviously needs to rehab

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I honestly do not know.

Travis Y. (ABQ)

Kobe is a scorer, but he's continually taking difficult shots. What can the Lakers do to make his life easier?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Ask him to stop taking such tough shots with over 6 seconds left on the shot clock.

Mike (Chicago)

Wow. The Rose-less Bulls dismantled the Magic at home. Wow.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Similar story last year when Rose was resting. A big reason why many of us did not think Rose was the MVP.

Travis Y. (ABQ)

Bynum is starting to play really well. The only problem is when he is getting double teamed. He doesn't kick it out and repost for deeper position. But he also isn't playing the inside out game to set up the 3-point shot. What's it going to take for him to get to the next level?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

He's the 2nd best C in the game. That is the next level.

Adam (Puerto Vallarta)

Why does everyone think Deron Williams is leaving? New Jersey can offer him something around $28 million more than Dallas, and New Jersey will have cap room in the summer of 2013 when they can get Dwight Howard or Josh Smith.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Many stars are taking less money than they could earn.

Jeanine (Grand Rapids)

Davey "Babe" Thorpe!!! Thank you for the chat. I'm a longtime fan of yours. I appreciate the insight you provide us readers, but more importantly for being a role model to all of us ESPN readers. What are your thoughts on the Nets giving up their lottery pick? Why would they do that? I mean they lost to the Cavs last night. The playoff look very unlikely for them.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I can't figure out what they are doing. Not sure anyone can.

james (slc)

Why isn't Fesenko on a team right now?

Mitchell (AB)

Thanks for being a Facebook friend! Are there any other teams Deron would consider other than Dallas this offseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I am sure there are. The Dwight shell game will be a factor too.

J.R. (Chicago)

I thought Kenneth Faried should have been a low lottery pick because it was really easy to identify his floor (an elite rebounder/hustle guy who could easily crack a playoff team's rotation). Now it appears that his ceiling is much higher. Do you think some team's are more enamored with a player's potential, and don't focus enough on what that player can already bring to the table?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

That is one of the many mistakes GM's make. How the Kings passed on him is just one of the long list of head scratchers. He's so perfect for what they need.

Pierre (NYC)

Hi Coach - in your opinion, is Anthony Davis basically Marcus Camby 2.0? What things does Davis do better/worse than Camby? Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

He's much quicker and bouncier-at the same age. Not sure he has the same feel for the game Camby did.

Dan (WI)

Could Rubio actually increase his ROY standing if the Wolves keep flailing without him? It's becoming clear how much he means to the team, even when he's not hitting shots.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

No, but I get your point.

Junior J. (Los Angeles, CA)

Is Pekovic the most underrated C? He's been amazing this season and no one talks about him.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I do.

Matt (SLC)

Previously, you mentioned the Jazz should tank and position themselves for a prime spot in the lottery. Do you still feel that way? Or do you believe that the Jazz should compete for the 8th seed? Shouldn't winning of essence to fans?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Did I say tank, or did I suggest they play their youngsters a lot more? That's what i think they should do.

Doug (Ohio)

Do you think Miami will get Turiaf, and if they do, would he help?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Irrelevant.

Marco (Brooklyn)

Hi Coach - What are your thoughts on the Magic? How can they go from contenders to pretenders overnight?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

The Bulls make most opponents look like pretenders.

Barry (Florida)

I think it is amazing to see how well Irving is playing. I cant believe how underrated the first pick of the draft was. Has there ever been a player who has been this underrated when going first overall?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Excellent point. Only playing 9 college games didn't help his "rating".

Stephen (New Jersey)

Do you think Carmelo Anthony will take the next steps in his game to lead the Knicks on a dep playoff run?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I think it is possible but doubtful.

JimmyZ (???)

You a fan of the blazers imploding their team?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Not yet. I'd like to see if they can acquire a top pg first.

Brad (Toronto)

Is there a clear cut number 2 pick in this years draft yet? Or is it still between Drummond, Barnes, Gilchrist?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I think Henson can join that list with a big next few games.

Don (Texas)

Looks like we will see another Bulls-Heat conference finals with the Bulls enjoying home-court advantage, just like last year. Your pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Miami today.

Fester (NO)

How has TT not gotten a head coaching gig until just last year?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

He interviews badly. Really. Isn't that absurd?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I do.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

So if Tristan Thompson is a future stud in your opinion and Kyrie Irving is a ROY frontrunner, how many years (or players) do you think the Cavaliers are away from being relevant again?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Two.

Disgruntled Warriors fans (Oakland, CA)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Benny (Miami)

Coach Thorpe - As an NBA insider, what can you tell us about the JJ Hickson situation? Why did the Kings waive him, after trading Casspi and a draft pick for him? Is he "cancerous" to a team? Can Miami sign him? Please fill us in with your insight!

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Didn't they also take Salmons and his bad contract? Literally, it's dumbfounding.

Matt (Chicago)

What's Detroit's number 1 need? I'm thinking an athletic PF to put next to Monroe. I actually like some of the young talent they have there

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Good call.

Joe (Illinois)

Is it possible that Denver is too deep? Their roster is amazingly loaded with young talent. They have completely turned over the roster from the 2009 Western Conference finalist, except for Birdman.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Too deep is accurate. They have to make some offseason moves. But it's a nice problem to have. Still, it's a problem.

Dan (WI)

Using some hindsight, do you think the Wolves did the right thing taking Derrick Williams despite having Love at PF? Would they have been better off taking Valanciunas, or is Williams doing well enough to justify the pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I am redrafting the June draft in this weeks rookie report. Stay tuned.

kp (chitown)

What is Brandon Knight's ceiling? Elite PG or serviceable starter?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Probably in between.

kp (chitown)

Do the Warriors have too much faith in Klay Thompson? His FG% has been awful.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

He needs time. He may never get "it" but he needs to time to find "it".

Jim (KC)

Where do you see Thomas Robinson going in the draft this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Very high. Could be top 3.

JH (JHtown)

How Evan Turner could improve his game other than more accuracy on his J ? Can you teach him how to explode to the hoop the way he explodes to get boards ?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Improved shooting would be enough.

Jon (Phoenix,AZ)

How about some love for Gentry keeping the Suns together. Would have been easy for them to spiral the drain really fast.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Absolutely right.

Mike (MN)

What do you think of a McGee/Faried frontcourt?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

They will block a lot of shots. But they'll struggle with big or strong frontcourt's , like Minny's.

Stu (Scotland)

Big fan. Don't like suggesting anyone should lose their job, but do you agree that Otis Smith has made too many mistakes to move forward with the Magic? They are a number 3 seed with a possible 15 seed future! And some people doubted SVG?! Unreal.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Agree.

Matt (Toronto)

Thoughts on fellow Gator, Bradley Beal? Would love for the Raps to draft him. Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

He's the whole package, assuming he finds his shot again. Which is a fair assumption.

kp (chitown)

Is there any chance the Cavs could be interested in trading Tristan Thompson for Boozer + Gibson? Tristan Noah would be tough.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Nope.

JB (Memphis)

So, it looks like the Grizz will sign Arenas for the rest of the year at the prorata veterans minimum... What are your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Ugh.

kp (chitown)

Do you agree with Hollinger that Lakers are now legit contenders? Do you see them beating OKC?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Yes and 50/50.

mackey (columbus)

Coach Thrope - if you were recruiting players on the junior college level what type of skills would you look for?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Coachability. Toughness. Ability to stay eligible.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

With Denver being 'too deep', why dont they, or any super deep NBA team, play everyong 20-25 min a game and put on a full-court press all game, especially with this shortened season? Feel like they could really wear teams down that way

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

They'd give up too many layups.

Ben (Saint Paul)

Thorpe, does your training facility employ Sports Psychologists?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Me.

Stephen (New Jersey)

Wats next for tyreke Evans as he is struggling to play the small forward position from the emergence of Isaiah Thomas at PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

He's an enigma. I remember employees there claiming he was like LeBron James. Um, no.

chris (Walnut Creek)

They booed last night bc all the talk now is how Lacob is going to move the team to SF and rename them the SF Warriors...yet they sell out every game in Oakland. so yeah, boooooooooooooo

big boy (la)

Kentucky's Davis = Prvis Ellison = Marcus Camby, True or False?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Better w the ball.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

I think OKC has only beaten San Antonio once in the past 3 years. Fluke or sign of things to come if they meet in the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Spurs can hurt them inside and defend the wings as a team.

Charlie (Alaska)

Anyone in the D-League the Twolves could pick up to help on their wings?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Marques Blakely would be great.

Zac (Oakland)

thomas robinson is going to be a beast in 3 years. True or false?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

False. He already is.

John (Miami Beach)

Does Fisher have enough left to help the Thunder or Heat?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I think so, but just barely. Can help by being more reliable than the rookie Jackson.

Mike (DeKalb)

Is Sessions a title-contention difference maker?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

On that team, yes.

Brad (Toronto)

How come the NBA doesn't use the minor league (d-league) as much as other pro sports like NHL or MLB do? I think each team should have its own d-league team.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

It will end up that way, probably.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Nuggets core - Gallo, Lawson, Faried, Afflalo...everyone else can be traded..agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Yes.

Nick (CT)

David, I feel Bynum doesn't play like a seven footer at all times, he tends to keep the ball too low and not high up to use his long arms as an advantage, your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Yes.I think exactly the opposite is true.

Anthony (Cali)

Terrence Williams was waived. I keep hearing he could be a good player in the league. Does he just need time to play? Should my Kings give him a shot?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

No and no. Just no.

C (Charlotte)

Obviously the Bobcats are horrible now, but you've got to like the plan, right? People forget that the Thunder were terrible a few years back and it took them 4 top 5 picks in three years to build what they have. Now they still have to get the draft picks right, but it feels like there is reason for hope.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Agreed.

James (NYC)

Why doesn't the NBA implement a one and one like in college. Wouldn't that make end of games much more interesting?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I like it!!

Matt (Toronto)

Chandler isn't part of the Nuggets core?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Not necessarily. Same with JM.

Stephen (New Jersey)

Wiill Paul George be better than Danny Granger?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Only if he attacks more.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

That's all the time I have today. Sorry. You can friend me at David B. Thorpe on Facebook or @coachthorpe on twitter. I do answer questions there from time to time. Have a great week and be safe!!
