March Madness is in full swing as we have gone from 68 teams down to the Sweet 16. As I said on our Selection Show and still feel that way, this is a tournament dominated by the Golaiths. Yes there are the Ohio U's, NC State's, Xaviers of the world, but the power schools, the top seeds, that should be battling in New Orleans. Obviously I was on Mike and Mike this morning breaking down the games. Louisville-Michigan State should be great. Everyone is talking about Draymond Green, but I think Keith Appling will be a key against changing defenses. Peyton Siva has been the catalyst for Louisville. I think Syracuse-Wisconsin comes down to three major fatcors, can Wisconsin control tempo, can they make the three and can they negate Syracuse's transition game. If they do, they have a chance...if not, the Cuse's athleticism will prevail.
Does Marquette's run end today
In the matchup against Florida, can the Gstors control and contain Marquette's tandem of Crowder and Johnson-Odom. Can Florida's guards hit their threes? It should be a great game.
Do you possibly see any of the four Ohio or BIG 10 teams playing eachother for the National title? I would like to see Michigan St. and Ohio St for the fourth time this year.
Ohio State has a great chance, especially with North Carolina's situation with Marshall. Those writing off Carolina are crazy as they are too talented, the people they put on the floor can play. They can see Marshall on the court, something tells me. I spoke to a hand specialist who cannot be specific because he did not see him, but he may play some minutes. They get a break that the game is on Friday and not Thursday. I look for the Tar Heels to win with or without him Friday. Ohio State has Sullinger, Thomas, Buford and Craft and are very dangerous.
Hi Dicky V i am a big fan of urs. What do u think of ncstate possible upsetting kansas and wiscoinson upsetting syracuse. I think their are more upsets in the tourment coming..
NC State has a great chance because of physical strenghth inside to compete. If they get Robinson in foul trouble they have a legit chance. Leslie can give them trouble. Taylor will be tough to defend. NC State beat two quality teams in San Diego State and Georgetown, and the Wolfpack will be in the game. I give the slightest of edges to Kansas.
What are the chances Alex Oriahki transfers to Auburn?
He will leave Connecticut because of the tournament APR situation. Not sure where he will end up.
9 points in 2 games for Baylor's future NBA draft pick Perry Jones III. He slept through most of the season, woke up for the Big XII tourney, and slept through last week. Any chance he wakes up for the game against Xavier and the possible showdown with KY or IU?
He has to have his A game now. He has been up and down and labeled based on potential. They are facing a hungry Xavier team trying to make up for their subpar season and the brawl. Kenny Frease was 11-13 FG and had 25 vs. Lehigh. If Jones plays aggressively, other teammates will as well and that makes a difference.
Will Cininati put up a fight against Ohio State?
Yes. Mick Cronin's team is tough and competitive. Parker, Dixon and wright are all good athletes. Gates could get Sullinger in foul trouble. I think these two schools should play every year like Louisville and Kentucky. I wish you had Georgetown and Maryland play, for example.
Will sdsu recruit and flourish next year or will it be another run of years of dissapointment?
They have three impact transfers coming in, includign Dwayne Polee. I think Steve Fisher will do very well.
Was Missouri losing to Norfolk State or Duke losing to Lehigh a more suprising upset.
Missouri's loss was more surprising. Lehigh has a great player in CJ McCollum. Missouri was so explosive all season long and Duke struggled against a lot of average teams where Missouri pulverized them. Missouri had a philosophy that they should score 85 and you would score 84. They did not defend well enough and that is why they are sitting at home.
How effective will Jones be this time around against the Hoosiers? Can Davis stay out of foul trouble? Will we actually be able to defend the trey? Winner after 40 minutes? Rapid fire of questions, but you're the one who can answer.
He certainly could niot be worse than last time. he was ion another world, not into the game at all. He will be more aggressive, won't turn it over six times like the first game. He will rebound too. Davis will probably not be in foul trouble. I like Kentucky to win, 77-65 and march on.
Dick, if you had to make a prediction, would you say that a 16 seed will upset a 1 seed at some point within the next 5 years? It seem like the disparity of talent is rapidly closing . . .
I feel it is going to happen. It is getting closer and closer, you are right. It will take a team shooting the 3s well to do it, but it can happen.
If the orange had melo would everyone be talking upset
They don't have Melo. Syracuse still has a lot of talent and are very dangerous in transition. Jim Boeheim's team is a number one seed for a reason. I think they have a good chance against Wisconsin.
Can my Tarheels survive and get to the Final 4 Dickie?? By the way I am a HUGE fan of yours except for when we play DUKE, you always are on THEIR side
Yes, I think the Tar Heels have enough talent. When you look at Harrison Barnes, Tyler Zeller and John Henson, that dominant frontline can lead them. If Marshall doesn't play, there is a dilemma in terms of getting the big three the ball. Maybe Barnes would play more on the perimeter. With the cast off, something tells me we will see a Willis Reed-type situation and Marshall playing some minutes. We will see.
As far as a 16 goes, with so much history at stake do you believe officials tighten up a bit officiating a potential 1-16 upset? Nobody is gonna want to be the guy that blows a call against the #1 seed.
I don't think that is fair. Officials call the game based on the flow of the game, whether the physical nature is getting out of hand or not, etc. There is more excitement when a 16 is playing a 1 closely, and the crowd usually wants to seer an upset, but I do not think the officiating changes.
All I have to say is welcome, Tebow! Joe Namath I love you, but you're wrong on this one!
I do not agree with Tebow and the Jets. If I was Jacksonville I would have sweetened the pot because they could use him badly. He would put people in the seats and shake things up. He is from there and would have been so popular. Now this will put so much more pressure on Mark Sanchez so if he struggles, the fans will be calling for Tebow like they did with Kyle Orton in Denver last year.
What's your take Kansas State's Jamar Samuels situation over the weekend? $200.00 from a family friend and he can't play. Ridiculous.
Sad situation, terrible timing for this to come up. I feel bad for Frank Martin to have to deal with that.
Did coach Drew switching from his usual zone D to man-to-man D get them to this point? Or was it just having more talent then the last two opponents?
If you looked at the draw and said you would have to play three teams that are double-digit seeds, you would take it. That said, Baylor is talented and athletic. Heslip can hit the trifecta and made nine of them against Colorado. Guys Like Jones III, Acy, Miller, and the lightning-quick play of Pierre Jackson, this is a team that can give Kentucky a major challenge in the Elite Eight if both teams get there.
DV, do you think it is fair to say that the NCAA tourney has trivialized the regular season? I do not see any lack of effort during the regular season. Your thoughts?
It is still about the names on the front of the jersey and rivalries. Players perform with passion and emotion in the regular season, so I do not think it trivializes it. There is more emphasis put on the tournament and what have you done for me lately. There is that mentality of instant gratification. I do not think a team that wins 30 games is a failur, yet some fans and media members may take a team to task for losing early in the big dance.
This is the greatest time of the year with March Mayhem. You will see some magical moments ahead. The experience of so many coaches in the Sweet 16 is incredible. Nine of the coaches remaining have been in the Final Four already and six have won the national championship. They know what they are doing and I feel, as I said earlier, it will be all about the Golaiths when we get to New Orleans. There have been so many special moments over the years. Villanova upsetting Georgetown, Kansas with Danny and the miracles, Christian Laettner's shot against Duke, Jimmy V cutting down the nets in 1983. If you were moved by Jimmy's speech, as well as the Wolfpack Cinderella championship over Phi Slama Jama, you can help the V Foundation by making a donation through a raffle that could win you a 2012 red Mercedes. For more details, go to jimmyv.org/vitaleraffle2012. I am so excited about my gala on May 18 as we honor Lou Holtz, Gary Williams and Jay Wright. There will be over 50 celebrities there as well.
