Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings folks. I'm actually in the press box at LP Field, where the US men begin the qualifying tournament for the London Olympics tonight. Field is spectacular.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:59 AM)

Let's dive in.

A Real Jags Fan... (Jacksonville...)

How close were we to disaster? Are the reports that it was up to him correct?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

I believe Tebow certainly had a say. Why would you be closer to disaster now than you were before a new staff was hired?

MICHAEL (NYC)

Two football factories USC & Florida, yet questionably Rex Grossman has been the most successful pro quarterback! Now the Jets have one from each school. Insanity is said to be doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Has anybody not yet learned? How do you explain this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

You don't steer away from guys because other people from their school haven't been great lately. You can find a lot of other reasons not to like Mark Sanchez and/or Tim Tebow.

Jeff Fisher (Rams Doghouse)

Pete, As lost as I have been as a coach would you agree that my dumbest decision was that I stated that I knew nothing of Greggy Boy before I hired him (and his son).

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

I don't know if you really knew nothing. You surely didn't know how big it would be.

MoJo (Jacksonville)

Phew... thought I might lose some carries there for a few days. will I get ANY help at all in the Red Zone this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Rashad Jennings is a good player who will help when he's back from injury.

Marc (Houston, Texas)

Having lost or given up Mario, Demeco, Winston, and Brisiel, do you favor Texans drafting a replacement for one of them with the first round pick, or drafting a WR as has been assumed by most pundits for months?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

Whatever the best option is at one of those spots. I think Caldwell will end up a starting guard. And Mario's replacement will be third OLB. I know they are talking Rashard Butler at RT, but I'd sure like him to have quality competition.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

The only benefit I can see for the new owner Shad Kahn to want Tebow is for revenue purposes. Should Jag fans be concerned that this owner is more interested in money than winning? If the owner is, than somewhere down the line if say a better chance to make more money becomes available in another city he would move the team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

They didn't get him, so you don't need to worry about any of that. And I believe the revenue he would have brought in is overrated. He wasn't going to sell 10,000 tickets a game, and only the profits from jerseys sold at a team pro shop or team web site go to a team instead of to the league's pool. To me it was more about buzz than revenue. But any business man is looking for revenue and should be.

Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville)

Well that was weird. Hey Paul, Please tell me, will I start AND finish this season as the #1 QB in Jax? Or should I keep a bag packed just in case?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

You'll certainly be on the roster for the full season, so I don't know that you need suitcases at the ready for more than an away game.

Chris (Nashville)

This is no doubt a huge year for CJ. I hope he does good was tired of all the hate surrounding him

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Some say hate, some say legitimate criticism after selling himself as a playmaker beyond a running back. Guess which category I fall into?

Clint (Cincy)

What are the Colts biggest needs in the draft outside of QB? They have done well IMO in signing some good, cheap OL talent this past week. WR seems to be, along with TE, CB, FS, LB, and a strong nose tackle (Nevis maybe?) if they indeed going to be playing a fair amount of 3-4.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Corner is a major need. Tight end, a third receiver, a defensive tackle would be next for me.

Todd (Houston)

What's your opinion on the Demeco trade?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

He was overpriced for three years to come, so I understand getting out from under it. It will help them in signing people like Duane Brown and Connor Barwin next year. And I like Daryl Sharpton from what I have seen. So I have no big objection.

Blake (Kenedy, TX)

I just looked at the amount of compensatory picks the Titans got when Albert Haynesworth left and they got 3. Do the Texans have a chance to get around 3 picks considering the loss of Mario, Winston and Demeco?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

It's a cumulative thing based on free agent gains and losses. And only Mario Williams and Mike Brisiel will count (so far). They cut Eric Winston and traded DeMeco Ryans. Those are not free-agent losses.

matt (minnesota)

Will the titans Compete and maybe win the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

I think they will compete.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Ironic that Tebow's trade value was more in line with his draft value the year he was selected.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

True.

Joseph (Abilene, TX)

I know the Texans' love the draft, but there were some pretty good wide outs that were in FA this year. Why no moves? Or interests? Is our cap situation that bad?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

Cap situation is that bad. And most of those guys were overpriced.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

What exactly do you mean by buzz? Was this a PR move, and the Jags were not that serious about getting Tebow?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

I think the owner wanted him and the GM and coaches didn't. So yeah, it would have been about creating buzz, not about improving quarterbacking.

Campbellonious (Cali)

I have serious concerns about the Titans secondary this season - what do you think the chances of signing a Gay or Porter realistically are?Verner/McCourty/Griffin/& Babs - yikes!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

I'm not high on Michael Griffin, but I am fine with the other three. Porter will find a better situation, but would displace Verner as a starter, shifting him to nickel. I don't think Gay would solve anything. [UPDATE: Porter signed in Denver.]

Todd (Houston)

With Wade Phillip's history of having a significant defensive rank drop from year 1 to year 2 and the 2 hits that we took in losing Mario and Demeco. Do you think that we still have the ability to stay in the top 10 on defense this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

I do. I know people love DeMeco, but how was his production? If it was good, wouldn't he have been on the field more than 58 percent of the time? And that number would have been even lower if Daryl Sharpton didn't get hurt.

Cory (Dayton, OH)

What did the Colts see in newly acquired QB Trevor Vittatoe? Wouldn't keeping Dan Orvlosky (who has had slight success with an awful team last year) than a QB who doesn't seem to have any upside?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

You're comparing a likely camp arm to a backup. Orlovsky had other people interested and left. The backup for Luck isn't on the roster now.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

What are your thoughts on players speaking out on Tebow prior to him being acquired, or for that matter any player? Uche Nwaneri was vocal on Twitter against Tim. While you want to support your present guys, if the player is signed doesn't it create a problem? Or do players just see this as part of the business?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

Part of the business. I love hearing from guys. And if they are chirping, you prefer they support their teammates. Then if a new guy enters, he can say, "Well, he's a teammate now too, so I am on board."

The Boss (Long Branch, NJ)

Did you like the show in Atlanta? Has "American Land" run its course? Finally, has everyone forgiven me for "Queen of the Supermarket"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

If you're finishing with "Tenth Ave. Freezeout" like that, I'm fine with "American Land" before it. Was a great show, as usual.

Rod (Tulsa)

I guess my question is not worthy ? Do you think the Jets are mainly interested in using Tebow as a H- Back and a Wildcat specialist or do they think they can develope him. Lets face it Tebow has a long way to go on his mechanics and the Jets are exactly known as QB U are they ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

H-back and Wildcat specialist with Jets. See <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/35465/jags-win-by-being-turned-down-by-tebow" target="_blank">Jags win big in being turned down by Tebow</a>

Matt (Nashville)

How big of an impact will Kamerion Wimbley make for the Titans pass rush?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

Hopefully a significant one. We need to wait and see.

Doug (MD)

Would Nevis be a DE in a 3-4? He's a great prospect... I'd hate to see him be useless.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

Not sure.

2ToneBlueBlood (TN)

Though he handled it like a pro, do you think Hasselbeck is upset at the Titans going after Manning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

I don't know why he would be.

Chilly (Tallahassee)

Time will tell how successful the Jaguars but the team is more interesting already with new ownership. What would a successful season look like for the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

Blaine Gabbert showing progress. To me, if Gabbert looks like an NFL quarterback, it'll be a good season.

Gene Smith (Jacksonville)

Phew, close one there. Now that spectacle is over, who should I take in the draft? I'm leaning towards Floyd over Blackmon, but possibly Coples.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

Blackmon won't be there and Coples is not your kind of guy at all. Ingram, I'd guess.

Aaron (Jags' Fan) (Knoxville, TN)

Any update on Lee Evans and Legedu Naanee to the Jaguars? Any chance they sign both and which could be the asset?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

I'm told Evans showed absolutely no signs of life at any point for Baltimore. So I wouldn't get excited about him. But they an take all the guys for camp they can get and have a look, so if it costs little or no guarantee, go for it.

Chopper (MD)

Titans in the draft. Center or DE. It has to be a formality, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

It can't be a formality if there isn't an end or a center they like there.

Dave (Denver )

Any news on Jeff Saturday or Dallas Clark?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Very popular question. If there was news, it'd be out. We generally don't wait for a chat question to share it!

Cory (Dayton, OH)

Are Donald Brown and/or Delone Carter really the answer for the Colts at RB or do you see them trying to pick up someone good in next year's draft (since this year we don't have enough picks for all of the holes we need to fill)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Can I see how those two play this year before deciding if they need to be replaced next year?

Roger (Houston)

Why dont the Texans play Foster at WR so he and Tate can eb on the field at the same time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

You don't take one of the best players in the league at his position and move him to another position to get someone else on the field.

Adam (Charleston)

Is Saturday a lock to sign with Peyton in Denver, or do the Titans stand a chance at this point?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

I'm not sure Saturday had a lot left and that the team that gets him will have scored a big win.

josh (jacksonville)

do you see the jags pursuing mike wallace

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

No. He would cost them the seventh pick in the draft. I don't see them making that move.

Wesley (Nashville)

Paul the Titans made a huge mistake moving Jason Jones from DT to DE. I'm hoping moving Wimbley from OLB to DE won't be as well. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Have to judge each on its own. Can't not move Wimbley because Jones' move didn't work. And Wimbley has played as an end before.

Aaron (Knoxville)

I know winning the offseason does not matter, but in your opinion who has won the offseason in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Four-way tie for last right now. No, Titans probably get the edge with a starter on both lines.

Marcedes Lewis (L.A.)

Hey Paul, this offseason I've taken up Chess Boxing. Trying to combine the physical with the mental to improve on my game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Hope it works as well as MMA did.

Aaron (Knoxville)

If you were the GM of the Colts would you take RG3 or Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Luck.

Pete (Lowell, MA)

I have seen varying reports on Hutchinson's play last year. Do you think he is over the hill, or does he have something left? Upgrade over Jacob Bell? Bell was pretty average, but he never got hurt.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

I hear he can still play, though not at the level of years ago. Understandable. Better than Jake Scott, I think you mean. Bell's been gone for year. Yeah, I think better. But Amano and Harris were the issues, more than Scott.

Dan (Connecticut)

Is it too early for you to give us win total projections for each AFC South team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

Absolutely too early. Need to see who is on the teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/35480/lucks-pro-day-a-mere-formality" target="_blank">Luck's pro day:; 'A mere formality'</a>

Christopher (Indianapolis)

What are the chances the Titans try and add Mike Wallace from the Steelers as another offensive weapon for Hasselbeck/Locker? Would you do it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Zero. I do not think the Titans think they need a top flight receiver at this point.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Who will play DE opposite Jeremey Mincey this season in Jacksonville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

A draft pick, it would seem.

Jon Elway (Bronco land)

Paul, How do I look now? +Peyton and -Tebow

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Very good, though I wish you spelled your name right.

Whitney (Planning my wedding)

I couldn't wait forever for you. I hope we can still be friends.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Alas, I was already accounted for -- which is what kept us apart. Friends forever.

Eli (My Cube)

Then you don't like to be called a Titans homer, but dang.. Jax resigned all their free agents, and added a much needed WR, a decent, young back up QB and a good CB that might start..

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

A backup quarterback is a backup. The receiver isn't that good. Re-signing Lowery was big, but I was looking to outside additions. Ross is good. That's not bad. Not addressed: Defensive end and another WR spot -- huge needs.

Phil (Montgomery)

The Colts' biggest need is RT. Winston Justice was let go for basically nothing by the Eagles for a reason, and having the best offensive line in college football was a huge key to Luck's effectiveness. The Colts need an WR for the future to replace Reggie Wayne also. They should go RT and WR in this draft, and fill their defensive needs next year. Don't want Luck to be the next David Carr or Tim Couch because of a lack of supporting cast.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

A guy is allowed to move from one team to another and get better. The Colts expect that from Justice. They'll surely draft an O-linemen. But they have other spots where they have no one. Like corner after Jerraud Powers.

David (Ft Pierce, FL)

Is the Aaron Kampman project over?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

Not until he's due money. And if he's healthy and can play between now and then, then it won't be over.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Prsuming Blackmon and Floyd are gone, They could be choosing between Hill, Wright and Randle.

Blueman (Indy)

Does Brody Eldridge start the season as Colts No.1 TE, if so will he be much more than a 3rd Tackle?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

He can catch too. They could do worse. But need more at the position.

Aaron (Tennessee)

I know this is the AFC South Blog, but thoughts on the Saints "Bounty" Punishment?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Very strong, obviously. As per usual, if the Saints hadn't lied, it would have been far less. A message sender. I don't think it's a travesty of justice or anything.

josh (jacksonville)

do you see mike thomas in jacksonvilles future

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

Of course. They just extended him. Bad that he gave up late last year. But with better people and coaches, he'll be good at least in the slot.

Horse of a Different Color (Jonesboro)

Does Blaine Gabbert have good leadership qualities? It would seem the Jags need to believe in their QB as much as they need him to be effective.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

Being effective is the best way to lead. If he's effective, then they believe.

Jacoby jones (Houston)

i expected to be cut by this time... i had my bags ready and all... am i going to be a texan still? this season>?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

John McClain seems to think you're safe.

mike (ny)

i've lost all respect for Elway - shipping a kid who took you to the playoffs and sold out your stadium was a bad idea

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

They sold out their stadium before Tebow. It's a business. Don't make it personal.

D. Poe (Memphis)

I'd like to stay in Tennessee...any chance Titans will trade up to get me so I can help out a DT?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

Doubt it.

Adam (VA)

Any reason why the Texans didn't do the Ryans trade earlier to free up some money for Mario? Also will Roc Carmicheal get a chance to earn some playing time this year after going on IR early last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

It didn't save them money this year. It was actually $750,000 more expensive to cut him than to sign him. The big savings come in the next couple years.

matt (nashville)

even though cj had a horrid year.. you have to give it to him that hes never missed a game

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Why do I care if a guy isn't missing games if he's folding up into fetal position when he gets hit?

Terrence Knighton (Chewing a stalk of celery) (Jacksonville)

Hey, Paul...how do I look?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

I don't know. But I am glad you're back on Twitter!

Blueman (Indy)

Paul quick opinion,do you think it is better to draft best available player and bend schemes to fit them or go out and get the best guys for a system? (And I know good players can play in any system)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

A, though it's not the way it usually works and you can't do it too often or you're all over the place.

Christopher (Indianapolis)

Do you think the chasing of Manning, which they obviosuly didn't get and not signing other FA's while waiting; possibly cost the Titans a real good shot at the division this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

Who did they miss out on? They weren't getting Williams. Maybe they missed out on Wells. Better with Wells for sure, but not a deadly miss.

Vince Young (Philly)

Speaking from experience, "He just wins games" doesn't always paint a complete picture.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

You are one hot commodity.

Bud Adams ((TX...err, I mean TN))

What odds would you put on me winning a SuperBowl before...well, you know...if I get out of the way and allow my GM to stay the course with Munchak at the helm coaching Locker, Johnson, Britt, Cook, and a solid O-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Unlikely.

Cory (Dayton, OH)

If Andrew Luck is as good as everyone thinks he will be, do you think the Colts will play to their strength and continue to be a pass-first team?As they proved last year, it's kind of hard to run first when your strength has always been your passing game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

Things have changed. New philosophies, new people. You don't want to be overly reliant on pass with a rookie. But balance should be the goal.

Aaron (Jag's Fan)

Mike Mularkey, Bob Bratkowski, and Greg Olson have all had offensive success in the NFL. Are they an upgrade of the old regime and thoughts on them as coaches?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

It's a good group. If they can't make Gabbert work, then he probably can't work.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

What ever happened to the Twindex?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Doctors did everything in their powers but it didn't make it.

Curtis Painter (Indy)

Do you have any phone numbers for CFL GMs.I'm thinking the US job market may be dried up for me.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Try the Google.

DeMeco Ryans (Long Gone)

Aren't I where I want to be? A contending team on the rise with a desperate need for me. After turning down taking a pay cut, the Texans kinda took care of me, at least as far as getting rid of me goes.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

It's a great situation.

M. Griffen (Nashville)

I'm sure glad the Titans franchised me...I thought I was gonna get cut. I used to be pretty good, but I wonder what they see in me now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Would have been really hard to get cut since you weren't under contract which is the scenario needed for them to franchise you.

Will (Austin)

Oh how time flies, see you after the much calmer week to come

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

Thanks people. Always a lot of fun. We had 382 questions. A lot here at the little AFC South.
