Chat with Chuck Cooperstein

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:04 PM)

Sorry to get started a little late. Tech issues, but we're good to go. Let's go!

Chris (Midland)

Kobe comment of "Mavs don't know how to use Lamar properly and he would be dangerous if they did", how exactly is it best to use Lamar because at this point from what I see its garbage time only.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:06 PM)

Obviously, there are going to be a lot of Lamar questions today. That was a brutal show last night. I don't know what Kobe's thinking since the Mavs have tried to use Odom in any number of ways, all with little to no success. I do know this, when the team finally gets all hands on deck, if Odom is still playing like this, they're going to have a VERY difficult decision to make concerning the rotation for the playoffs.

clay (dallas)

Why didn't we make any deadline deals? I realize we're trying to get dwill this summer but geez, Lamar odumb is the most useless player on this roster and should have went somewhere

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:07 PM)

For the 10,000th time. Odom's contract is needed for the Mavericks to make the splash you and they want to make in July. That is first among the reasons why he is on this team

dc (thc colony)

What does dirk think about us wasting a year of his prime with this useless team around him, he hasn't been great but Terry has been awful and odom a joke

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:09 PM)

Terry hasn't been awful. In fact, since he started talking, he's been playing a lot better. In his last 7 games averaging 18.6 on 48.5FG and 51.3 from 3. Now the home vs road thing with him is definitely an issue. Averaging just 12.4 on 35.3 and 30.8 from 3 on the road. 17.2 50.2 45.2 from 3 at home

avon barksdale ("the wire")

Why will carlisle bench everyone that's bad on this team including dirk but wont bench Lamar, he still gets his 20-25 regardless to how bad he stinks it up, he's done nothing

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:11 PM)

Lamar has been benched for poor play earlier this season, but the bottom line is that he provides (In theory) the size that the Mavericks need up front. Without him, they become a very small team. But if he isn't going appear, does it really make a difference?

Wilson (Dallas)

Should Yi get more playing time than Odom? He's more confident offensively right now and isn't any more a liability on defense . . .

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:11 PM)

Mark (Allen)

Buying or selling for a title run? Lakers with Sessions at PG.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:13 PM)

I'll buy. thought it was a great trade. Gave up little to nothing to get him. Of course, we'll see whether the Lakers are willing to pony up $$ to re-sign him in the summer. Doesn't seem like Jim Buss is in a spending mode these days

Jimmy (LR)

No one was beating the Lakers last night with the way they shot it. When we get healthy, what is the potential for this team? I think we are as tough as out as any in a 7 game series.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:14 PM)

I still like the Mavs if they can get everyone together. But that's been the problem for most of this season, they haven't had their people together, and time is starting to tick down on that happening, with them having enough games to truly jell. And even then, the emotional chemistry of this team, will it have enough time to take hold? Especially if Odom can't get his act together

Jeff (Arlington)

How would you handicap Odom's chances of being with Mavs next year?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:15 PM)

Less than zero. He will be bought out of the deal for $2.4 million

Jarad (Fort Worth)

Wow, I think if many fans had their way, odom would be banished from Dallas. Do you see carlisle reacting to the negative feedback from the fans regarding Odom?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:16 PM)

Nope. If Carlisle listened to you or any other fan, he'd be sitting with you pretty soon after that. He is trying to give this every opportunity to succeed. But as the Head Coach, he is likely going to have to make a very uncomfortable call here in the next few weeks

clayton (wichita falls tx )

hey coop i was wondering if we should make anything out of last nites loss i mean we didnt have the matrix who clearly is our best defender Do you agree? and do u think we could see him in uniform Friday at the spurs

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:18 PM)

I wouldn't go nuts over the loss last night, but I will say that the Lakers are as difficult a matchup for the Mavericks as any team because of the strength of their front line with Bynum and Gasol. Mavs did a great job shutting down Bynum last night, but could do nothing with Pau. Of course if Gasol is going to knock down three's (he's made 5 all season), maybe it just wasn't your night to begin with

John (Mesquite)

Boris Diaw just got bought out by Bobcats. Wouldn't he be a better fit at this point than the Lamar Odom experiment? Can the Mavs make that move from a financial standpoint?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:20 PM)

Have you seen the condition Diaw is in? It's even worse than Odom. talking to some Charlotte people when they were in town last week, they're convinced he's done. And BTW, I'm convinced those guys know a heckuva lot more than the owner of that team does.

Heathcliffe (Austin)

Do we have any word yet on when the Mavs will be fully-loaded again health-wise?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:21 PM)

Marion should be back tomorrow. Haywood some time next week. If not Tuesday, then for the Florida swing. And no one knows for sure on West, although, I'm betting since he got the wrap off his hand and was shooting the ball in Denver, that he might make the florida swing as well. If not then, then certainly the April 2 game vs the Clippers

Jarad (Fort Worth)

Looking at the +/-'s, the mavs low was JET with -23 and the Lakers best was Sessions with 28. To what extent of the loss was based on the new look of the Lakers?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:22 PM)

A whole lot of it. Look at what the Laker bench did in the 2nd quarter when they took control of the game. Sessions and Barnes, and to a lesser degree Murphy just killed the Mavs

adam (TX)

Do you think that the age of the Mav's core (Dirk, Marion, Kidd, Terry) might dissuade D-Will from joining? NJ obviously has a culture of losing but they have been injured all year and have a fairly young team.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:23 PM)

Dirk is the only one who matters here, and he's playing at his usual high level. That and coming home will be attractive for Williams. Along, of course, with a max contract offer.

Suuil S. (Lewisville, TX)

Last night was an "All time Epic low" for Lamar "Kardashian" Odom in not just a Mavs Uniform but perhaps for his NBA Career. Time to retire? I just don't think he has it in him anymore. He has Rings with the Lakers and now it just doesn't look like he has any fire left in him. His head is still on the Lakers bench and it appears he's hear as a "Inside Job" to ensure that the Mavs do not repeat. If I'm Carlisle, enough is enough!

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:25 PM)

I don't know if his head is still on the Laker bench, but I'm trying to remember the last time that a very good player has just totally lost it with no warning at all. I mean, Lamar has become the hoop version of Steve Sax not being able to throw the ball from 2nd to 1st, or Mackey Sasser the cathcer who couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher. Can anyone come up with basketball example?

Ricky (Houston)

What was the final line last night regarding FG%'s. It seemed to me like the Lakers couldnt miss.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:27 PM)

Lakers shot 58.4, just below OKC's 58.7 opponent's best in the 3rd game of the year

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:27 PM)

More importantly, the Lakers shot 9-18 from 3. they came into the game 29th in the NBA in 3 pt shooting

clay (dallas)

Chuck your wrong, odometer isn't needed to make a slash, we are still going to have to trade him to a team under the cap plus cash just to get him off the books

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:28 PM)

Nope, he can simply be bought out

felipe (Colorado)

Coop.. so are you implying that RC would really keep Lamr out of the playoff rotation?? I can't see that

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:30 PM)

He's going to HAVE to think about it. Can't play a player for 24 minutes and get no production from him. I'm truly convicned of this: If Odom wasn't who he was, and hadn't had (to quote Bill Parcells) a "demonstrated ability to play," then he would have already moved on from him

justin (austin)

is chris kaman a possibility in the offseason with DWill i would think with if you use amnesty on haywood you could get kaman for 7 -8 million to play next to dirk is that too low of an offer for him? and couldnt you keep jet and kidd for smaller salaries maybe jet at the midlevel exception at that price?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:32 PM)

If you sign DWill, you're not going to be able to give Kaman that type of money. Depending on how far over the cap they are, the best they could hope for would be to give him a mid level exception of somewhere around $6 million to start

Jarad (Ft Worth)

I see why you'd include me with the many fans that would banish Odom, but i think Rick is doing the right thing. He put up decent numbers in the previous road game, but it's going to be near impossible for him to get confidence when his home crowd boos him. Is there any hope that he can get it back on the road to regain some home crowd in your opinion?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:33 PM)

It's really the only card Carlisle has left to play

Wilson (Dallas)

Is Brandan Wright a keeper for next year? What other younger players could Mavs keep to build around a new core? Yi? Sean Williams? Jones?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:35 PM)

I think Wright is a keeper. He plays with a lot of energy. And I'm a Jones fan as well. It seems like a lot of good things happen when he's out there, although his one start vs GS wasn't all that great. Then again, the Mavs were cooked that night with that being the last game of the 9 in 12. The other two? Not so much

Tyler (Lubbock)

Don't you think the comments from Kobe about LO were just a buddy move, and less a basketball analysis.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:35 PM)

I would agree with that

clay (dallas)

Why would we buy him out and that 2.4 is still on our cap when we can trade him, plus 3 mill cash to a team under the cap and have more room for deron? Stick to calling games coop

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:36 PM)

Because no team is going to want to take him at either his full salary of $8.9 mil or have him on THEIR books for 2.4

clark (garland)

We need to get younger and more athletic at the two, assuming we get Seton this summer, wouldnt a guy like Danny green be an excellent fit? He'll be a free agent and could come cheap

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:37 PM)

Danny Green is going to make himself some $$. But the one thing about the Spurs, they keep who they want to keep. Hard to see him leaving SA

David (Terrell)

What is the status of the Florida PG that is playing in Greece and the Finnish prospect they got from Portland? Are these guys ready for next year?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:39 PM)

Unlikely that either will ever play in the NBA.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:40 PM)

On that note we'll wrap it up. Great questions and comments. We'll do it again next week.
