Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!
Where do you think Mike Wallace will end up and at what cost?
As it looks right now, he'll end up in Pittsburgh under the 1st round RFA tender offer.
Tebow? Sanchez? My Jets? W**??? How mant games til Tebow gets the start?
It will be one quarter before Jets fans start calling for him to start. One quarter of the first preseason game. That's if they can wait that long.
Mike Wallace apparently believes he's as good as you think he is asking for Fitzgerald/Megatron $.
He is that good. Unfortunately for Wallace, he went through something of a slump in the last half of the 2011 season, which is the worst time he could have picked to do so.
Hey Scientist, any early thoughts on the fantasy value of Denver's WRs? Is Decker a clear starter in PPR if healthy?
Decker would probably be rated a WR3 at the moment. Thomas could rate as high as a WR2 (or even a low WR1) if it becomes clear he can stay healthy. The health issues will drop him down to a WR3 as well as far as fantasy drafts go.
I have been a Jets fan since 1966. Is now the time to get off the bandwagon? Alot of bad years but I've NEVER been more ashamed of a Jets team. Your take please?
This is an at the moment take: the Jets should be taken to task for not solving their biggest problem, that being not having a vertical threat. Adding a distraction like Tebow only makes matters worse. Having said that, if they solve the WR issue later in FA or the draft, then my take on the Jets could change.
HEY K...C...! With Tolbert signing in CAR, what does it do to the fantasy value of the entire backfield? Less short yardage TDs for Newton, right? Think they'll trade a RB?
Four players who can carry the ball is one player too many. Carolina will probably trade one of their RBs.
What do your metrics say about Matt Stafford? Where would you rank him among all quarterbacks? I feel that his 5000 yd season has been under the radar, as strange as that it is to say. Imagine if he had a running game.
I think people want to see him have that type of performance for more than one season. He'll probably do that, but until he does, he won't quite be moved up to top of the league status among most pundits.
If there are no major additions for either team, what winner and score sounds right for this years Denver at New England game?
Patriots win that game 34-24.
do you think the eagles can win a superbowl?
Absolutely. In fact, they are probably closer to that level than is generally thought.
Jets HAVE solved their receiver problem KC! Two words for you:CHAZ SCHILLENS! P.S. Fireman Ed just quit!
Don't even joke about Fireman Ed quitting. My youngest son gets a kick out of Ed's iPod app. Schilens is good but if that's their only solution to the vertical issues, it's a huge risk on NY's part.
How will Cutler throw the ball to Marshall now when he has Forte, Barber, and now Bush to satisfy?
The Bush signing says Barber may not be there long term. And Cutler will throw the ball to Marshall 170 times and Forte will still get his 300 rushes/targets.
TFS, what do you think of the Cowboys possibly taking Decastro at 14?
Perfect fit for that team.
How much weight would Tebow need to gain to play right tackle better than Wayne Hunter?
The Jaguars reportedly had Tebow pegged for special teams duty and now Ned has him pegged for right tackle duties. Don't give Rex Ryan any ideas!
do you believe a team led by Tim Tebow can consistently beat playoff type teams? Or did he and will he just beat marginal teams
Tebow could be the effective centerpiece of an NFL offense but it would take a team willing to build their gameplan and personnel around what he does best. No team looks willing to do that and therefore it means his career will likely fall short of what it could have turned out to be.
It seems that Forte is none too pleased about the Bears signing Bush today. Do you see him holding out or playing out his franchise year and getting out of dodge in the off-season?
Sure do. Forte deserves Adrian Peterson caliber money and the Bears look like they just aren't going to pay him that.
Okay, which RB do you trade? Stewart, right? William's contract is too big and Stewart is physically a lot like Tolbert.
Agreed, but it may boil down to which RB the other team wants.
Why haven't some of these teams with late 1st round picks taken a shot at Mike Wallace? As you said last year, he was one of the best receivers, if not the best, and he will be more productive than anyone you get in the 20s/30s.
Part of it could be his reported big contract demands. Part of it is having to pay a first-round pick for him. Part of it is teams waiting to see how the rest of the top of the FA WR plays out. Part of it is the draft is full of vertical WRs.
Who are the top 3 NFL teams who have made the smartest off-season moves to date in your opinion and who are the worst 3?
Can't get to 3 due to time limitations. Do like TB's signings as well as NE's. Not sold on the Jets.
The Panthers also have Mike Goodson which has looked pretty good in limited action imo.
How will Harbaugh utilize the WR corps with the addition of Manningham? Will V. Davis stay in to block more with another talented WR to run the crosses and posts?
Harbaugh's history suggests that he just won't center his offense around a flex TE. Manningham has the ability to be productive at every depth level, so his addition could help every receiving target concentrate on the things he does best.
Would you rather give up a 1st rounder and pay a Fitz contract for Wallace or draft Kendall Wright at a controlled 1st round rookie salary? I know Wallace is the superior talent, but the latter seems appealing too...
Trouble is Wallace has proven he can produce at an NFL level and Wright hasn't. And some of Wright's tape suggests that he is very raw in route running and might be more of a vertical slot receiver than a true overall vertical threat.
This is a different type of question. Rumors suggest the Vikings might prefer taking Claiborne over Kalil (I know your thoughts on both players). What I'm wondering though is regarding the value of both positions (CB vs LT). Wouldn't be generally true that a truly elite CB ( Revis) is more valuable then a Great LT (Joe Thomas). My thinking has to do with the additionally creativity a defense can display with a High-Level CB.
Al Davis and John Madden used to have this argument all of the time - build a team around O linemen or CBs? I tend to lean more towards CBs but it also depends on how good a team is in developing O line talent. In Minnesota's case, I'm not sold on their O line development skills, so Kalil would be the choice.
I think no one wants to pay Wallace that type of cash and give up a first rounder. Especially since the salaries/cap of first round picks are drastically less than they have been in the past.
It isn't over quite yet, but if Wallace is insisting on a monster deal, he might have to return to Pittsburgh for one more year. That actually might not be a bad thing, as he could post a full season's worth of dominant numbers and then land the huge deal his talents say he is worth.
I can't figure out the Jets.
A man who can figure out cosmological physics struggles can't even grasp the Jets moves!
can mike vick stay on the field?
It's hard to say yes to that question since defenses know Vick isn't the most durable QB in the NFL. I'd have to say the odds lean towards no.
Could part of it (why teams with late 1st round picks arent taking chances on Mike Wallace) be that they dont think he is as good as he or you thinks he is? The market for Tim Tebow spoke volumes. Same message?
If Wallace only cost a fourth-round pick, every team in the NFL would line up to sign the guy.
How would you rate the Bills D-Line against the league (NYG, DET to name a few? I feel like a healthy Kyle Wiliams and 2nd year for Marcel Dareus and tackles compare to DET. Mark Anderson and Mario Williams may be a step or two behind NYG, but combo of 2 DT's and 2 DE's seems really great.
That D line is getting to be positively scary. Buffalo has needed bulk and talent in their front seven for years and now they have both in large quantities.
What happens to the Saints & Brees this year? 9-7 and Brees is injured trying to do to much (aka Chargers last yr)? PS Why havent they signed Brees?
The loss of Payton is huge, but the Saints do still have plenty of offensive brain power on their team. I expect NO will struggle some this year and might even miss the playoffs. Regarding Brees, it may have been that they were waiting to see how this bounty situation played out before putting a bigger contract on the table.
Speaking of the Saints should Rogel Godell have given them a more harsh solution?
I don't think anyone is knocking Goddell for giving the Saints a light punishment. And what he is doing in this area is absolutely the right thing to do. He's taking the same approach Pete Rozelle took to cleaning up gambling in the NFL. Goddell deserves big time kudos for having the guts to do this.
if Wallace was as good as you said, wouldnt every team in the league line up for only a 1st? Wouldnt every team want a Megatron for a 1st? Fitzgerald for a 1st?
Not necessarily, but Wallace is also more of a vertical threat. Those two are all-around WRs.
With McKenzie leaving, should the Giants target OT in free agency or with a high draft pick, or do you think they can address that hole internally?
Draft pick. As good as the Giants are at developing O line talent, they may not even need a top pick to solve this issue.
KC - any validity to the Jets reasoning that having a Tebow package will make it more difficult for their opponents to make a defensive game plan?
Teams didn't seem to be flustered about gameplanning for Miami's Wildcat plays after the first season the Wildcat was introduced. It just isn't enough of a justification to get the distraction that is Tebowmania.
Do you think Tannehill at #8 for the Phins would be to much of a reach?
Tannehill will be a good NFL QB, but Matt Moore has yet to reach his performance ceiling. Miami should invest that pick elsewhere and solve some of their other personnel issues (of which there are many).
Browns, Bengals, NE all have 2 first rounders this year. Which team (if any) is most likely to package both to trade up? For which player?
You know marketing has gone too far in this world when someone tries to write a question with a name like that.
Do you see the Panthers moving up to grab Blackmon?
I hope not. Blackmon isn't head and shoulders above the rest of the top 5 WRs.
Do you think the announcement that Morris Claiborne needs wrist surgery will drop him in the draft?
It might, but his 7.5 YPA would more of a concern than his health.
Overall do you see the Tebow experiment being successful (aka Denver's 8-8)? Or will it blow up in Ryan's face with all the dysfunctional players there (Cromartie, pouting WR's, etc.)? Thanks
Johnette Howard of ESPNNewYork.com wrote an article that perfectly sums out how this is likely to turn out. In short, it has all the makings of a disaster.
Same question about Giants as before except this time replacing Manningham. Is there any indication that Barden or Jernigan is up to the job or do they need to spend a high pick on WR?
The draft does have some good slot WRs but the Giants have enough candidates on their roster to fill that role that they may not need to invest a high pick there. Having said that, if Jarius Wright were to fall to them in a later round (i.e. outside of the 1st round), he would be a great value pick.
so i looked at yards per target and Garcon was at 6.8 in '10 and '11. i wasn't sure what's average for a WR though...
Around 7.5 is the usual average in that metric.
If it is a disaster, what happens to Tebow after the fact?
Well, he won't be going back to Denver, that's for sure.
'Tis but a scratch! What pieces (from draft and FA) would you put around Manning to ensure he can be immediately successful in Denver?
Great movie! Also really like Life of Brian. Manning needs defense as much as anything. Could also use maybe one more quality receiving target just to ensure depth behind Decker and Thomas.
Are the seahawks looking too make anymore big moves this off season in your opinion?
Probably not, but the good news for Seattle is that it is already close to having a team that can be a conference title contender. They can makes moves for depth. Just wish they had a better QB situation, though.
do you see Alex Smith regressing next year and how much?
No regression for Smith, especially if SF makes one more acquisition towards getting a vertical WR (I have little faith that the Moss experiment will turn out better than the Burress experiment fared in NY).
Sorry me again... There has been a ton of talk about Richardson going as high as the 5th overall pick. Isn't picking a RB that high a waste, especially in this pass-heavy NFL. I always think that an RB is only as good as the offensive line anyway. Thoughts?
The issue with Richardson is that there are really only 5-6 players in the draft who look to be hands down elite talents - Luck, RG3, Kalil, Claiborne (even though I'm not sold on him), Richardson and Blackmon (also not quite sold). If a team has a top 6 pick, taking one of these players make sense if it fills a roster need.
Way too early I know, but who's the top overall fantasy pick next season? Rodgers?
It's definitely not way too early! I'm working on some research for the fantasy guide today and am making plans to attend an ESPN fantasy roundtable in the next few weeks. Rodgers would be the No. 1 pick at the moment.
after all their cuts, and added draft picks, what are the chances the Texans pull an Atlanta move and move up to try to get Blackmon OR attempt to sign Plaxico Burres?
Blackmon is not as good as Julio Jones, so let's hope the Texans don't make that move. And Buress was one of the worst vertical WRs in the NFL last year, so signing him would also be a mistake.
Rex Ryan + Tony Sparano Tim Tebow=?Also, is Tony S. REALLY the best OC the Jets could find? He's has VERY LITTLE play calling experience.
A ? may be the best way to describe all of those moves.
Rodgers #1? Overall? What about Foster?
Rodgers over Foster because of durability concerns and because Rodgers will put up rushing yards in addition to his passing yards and TDs.
Is there been a better offseason in recent memory than this one? Every day brings a new round of craziness...
Last year had more than its share of craziness, only it wasn't the good kind of craziness. This offseason has been fun at times and interesting all of the time.
Reports are Broncos have William Gay and Tracy Porter in town...who's better?
Porter has had mediocre metrics in many seasons, while Gay has posted better numbers more often. Porter is worse.
The better question for Jets Fans, is Mike Tannenbaum the best GM they can find? The guy is a HACK
The Jets moves have been quite perplexing of late. Odd thing is Tannenbaum had a terrific history of personnel moves for a while there. Strange to see the regression.
Given the circumstances, would it be wise to trade Forte? Is his value high enough for a good return or do questions about his recovery from injury drive down a potential haul? Also, could Bush handle starting? What would KC do?
That's a classic! I get a kick out of the part where they complain vociferously about the government but then keep remembering all of the ways that civilization helps their lives. If the Bears could get fair market value for Forte (that is multiple high round draft picks), trading him makes perfect sense if they are not going to sign him to a big deal.
Are you surprised anyone's talking to you when Bo Jackson is chatting at the same time? ;)
Bo knows chats.
Is the owner of the Jets asleep? If my GM doesn't fully read the contract before agreeing to it he's fired!
I'll leave that comment to speak for itself.
Would the Bears look at moving Forte? What would he be worth in a trade?
The only issue with Forte is that he does have some wear and tear and might not be able to be a team's lead back for 4-5 years. That would tend to move the value down but if a team is in a win-now mode and needs a top-level RB, making a trade for Forte makes sense.
Any GM who thinks Sanchez is a franchise QB needs to find another line of work.
As noted in a TFS article a week or so ago, Namath had huge leadership issues early on in his NY tenure and he eventually got over them. Sanchez can do the same, but adding Tebow to the mix isn't likely to help that process.
KC, what will be on your dinner table tonight?
Not sure. Mrs. Scientist is still deciding. It might be a family night out.
The Jet's situation is reminicent of the book/movie The Manchurian Candidate. Belichik planted a chip in Tannenbaum's head for just this moment! Jet's destroyed by their own hand! Brilliant!
Just imagine what Roger Goddell will do when he finds out about this.
You think the Bears are just planning to tag him twice and kick him to the curb? Bad PR move, huh?
They are just getting as much top-line mileage out of him as possible and then moving to another RB.
if your browns and you have the following 2 options, which do you take?1) Richardson at 4 and Stephen Hill at 222) Blackman at 4 and Doug Martin at 22
Richardson and Hill.
KC, what would you recommend the Vikings do with their second-round pick? CB? WR? DT? Trade up for Mike Wallace??
A move for the defensive secondary would make the most sense, but this year's draft is somewhat weak at both CB and S. Might have to work on the defensive front seven instead.
Most Dysfunctional team in the NFL? Jets? Jags? Cowboys? CBS pregame show? Your take?
It's cold cruel and calculating, but what the Bears are doing is probably the right thing for managing a RB asset as a business, right?
Yeah, but think about the message it sends to the rest of the team. If management treats Forte that way after he has performed as well as he has over the years, imagine what they will do to anyone else who isn't as good.
KC - how prevalent are "bounties" in the league? Seems like there really wasn't much player outrage about the Saints (similar to steroids in baseball)
I don't know the answer to that question, but can say this - watch the end of North Dallas Forty when those two O linemen decide they want to injure that D lineman. They didn't need extra money to make that kind of move. Getting rid of bounties only takes care of one part of the problem.
Who is your #1 fantasy sleeper for this year? And NO Tebow please!
Do you really think I'm going to give that away in a chat?! That kind of material gets saved for an Insider article, sir!
No question here. Great chat!
Hey, give thanks to the chatters. They are the ones who make these chats work.
Knowing the Vikings, if they tried to trade up for Mike Wallace, they would end up with Morley Safer and Dan Rather!
Might as well end the chat on a funny note! Quick reminder: the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. Thanks for all of the questions and I hope to see you all here next week!
