Chat with Sean Adams

Jason (Frost tx)

How has david ash looked since coming back from spring break. Which one of the backs have looked the best as well.

Sean Adams
  (12:06 PM)

David Ash has been up and down but more up than down. It's very important to note that his lows are higher than his highs from last year. Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown have been about even but both very good. Don't expect a dropoff when backs go in and out of the game this fall.

David Park (University of Texas)

Are the Longhorns BCS contenders next season? If not, where do you see them?

Sean Adams
  (12:08 PM)

I have an early prediction for the Longhorns to be 9 - 3 or 10 - 2. If the Lonnghorns win 10 games, they will be in the BCS. After two years of down and average, the Longhorn fan base is ready to spend money and the BCS is all about cash.

Starks (Memphis, TN)

Will you guys have coverage of Tyrone Swoopes at the Elite 11 tomorrow in DFW?

Sean Adams
  (12:12 PM)

William Wilkerson will be there for HornsNation but there will be wall to wall coverage including a live chat. I'll post the link on my twitter page and at HornsNation.

Todd (Richmond, Tx)

Are you optimistic about Cameron Ridley? I saw him live against William B. Travis, and let me tell you, I was not impressed. Terrible free throw shooter, and when doubled, he is not effective. Is he the answer?

Sean Adams
  (12:14 PM)

I want to say I am but history would be against me. Based on the situation, these don't usually turn out well for the school. He is committed to Texas but won't sign in the early signing period. That tells me someone else is at play. Just my hunch based on nothing.

Chris (Houston, Tx)

I haven't heard any buzz pertaining to Cody Johnson and his draft status, or his performances at the combine or pro days. Is he slated to get drafted this year?

Sean Adams
  (12:16 PM)

I cannot figure out a scenario where Cody Johnson gets drafted but he will get in a camp and will have every opportunity to make an NFL roster. He will have to show he can block, play special teams and catch the ball out of the backfield if he wants to play fullback.

Stephen (Seattle, Wa)

what up sean, i talked to Rashaad Samples on twitter yesterday he said "i do love the color burnt orange" honestly is he just messing with Texas or do they have him in the bag just waiting to announce?

Sean Adams
  (12:18 PM)

I will never say a kid is in the bag until the first Wednesday in February but everyone should feel good about Samples. Sometimes the recruits just have to do things on their schedules. I have no problem with that.

EZ 28 (Davis, CA)

Love the DJ move. Is this the type of role that Daje can look forward to taking over once monroe graduates?

Sean Adams
  (12:21 PM)

I thought it was a needed move and should be a successful move but the role will evolve over time and will change with every athlete that plays it. Daje is a person that can be that 'wow' player. We may get some 'wow' from DJ in 2012 to get it started.

Stephen (Seattle, Wa)

I just wanna let it be known.. i hope Texas smacks the .... out of OU next year. cuz last year was a fluke. Hookem"

Sean Adams
  (12:23 PM)

I don't know if Texas smacks them around but it will be a game that will play into the 4th quarter. Texas is quietly loaded everywhere. If they get quality play at QB, watch out.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Longhorns will play in the College World Series in Omaha This Year?

Sean Adams
  (12:27 PM)

I'm a huge College baseball fan and as the Longhorn fans say, they love the University of Texas at Omaha. This has been a weird year even though it has turned around as of late. I'm not ready to pencil them in for Omaha but Augie Garrido is the Phil Jackson of college baseball and his teams play well late.

Stephen (Houston)

Sean, Please tell me more about Ricky Seals-Jones!! I can't wait to see this kid in a Texas uniform. He looks like he can play any position on the field other than OL and DT. How likely is it that he moves to TE?

Sean Adams
  (12:32 PM)

When I did a film breakdown on him a couple months back, even I was shocked. It was one of the best overall high school videos I'd seen in a long time. He is athletic, aggressive, quick, fast and long. He literally could play 5 positions on offense and 4 on defense. His body, his growth and his desire will decide where he plays.

Paul (Davis)

How did you get your job?

Sean Adams
  (12:32 PM)

A lot of prayer.

Stephen (Houston)

What will it take to put more pressure on Rick Barnes? I think his X's and O's are lacking. History has shown that if he does not have a top notch PG to run the offense, then the offense doesn't run. Seriously, how many more seasons of this before he is on the hot seat?

Sean Adams
  (12:38 PM)

I agree with you about the PG. As I wrote on Monday of last week on, 2012/2013 will be the pressure year for Barnes. If he is still rebuilding because of defections from this year it could be tough. The seat takes a lot longer to warm up than at places like Kentucky, Duke, UNC and UCLA (historical hoop schools). Here's a fact - Nobody is ever on the hot seat at Texas for going to the NCAA Tourney 14 years in a row.

Cal (Austin, TX)

Are there any indications that Mack Brown has put the kibosh on Harsin's infatuation with trick plays? Last season it looked really amateurish to run so many given how most opposition seemed fully prepared to defend them...

Sean Adams
  (12:41 PM)

Trick plays have their role in every offense in the country, even at places like Alabama. Those off-schedule plays are great when timed right during the course of a game. Expect to continue to see the trick plays. Expect them to be more effective as the normal course of offense is successful as well. Having a good offense will lead to the tricks plays going for more scores.

Billy bob Thorton (Tennessee)

I see 2 potential NFL prospects in Okafor and Jeffcoat and then if B Moore can come in and dominate thats another one..oh and Dorsey. I say we have the ability to have a NFL front line.. your thoughts? and how could that come into play this year?

Sean Adams
  (12:45 PM)

Desmond Jackson is the kid you left out. The defensive line has a shot to be special and I don't just toss that word around. Football is about the quarterback, blocking for the quarterback and rushing the quarterback. The 2012 defesive line for Texas will pound every QB they play.

Stephen (Seattle, Wa)

What is it going to take to keep Myck Kabongo from leaving for the draft? He is good and has alot of upside but i see wayyy to many good young guards right now a little more development would really boost his stock.

Sean Adams
  (12:50 PM)

The hardest part is that he could come back to school and hurt himself for the 2013 draft. Do I think he needs the basketball and playing time in college? Yes. Does he need to strike while the iron is hot? Maybe. A lot of these kids have a lot of pressure.

Jay (Round Rock)

1. Who will be the next head coach for the women's bball team? Who are the candidates.2. When will UT dump the underachieving Barnes?

Sean Adams
  (12:55 PM)

My initial though was to go get someone off the staff of Tennessee or U Conn but I would be shocked if it was not someone with Texas ties. I wish Clarissa Davis had just a little bit more experience.

EZ 28 (Davis, CA)

The safety position opposite Vaccaro scares me as much as the fact that we haven't landed a DB recruit in 2013 class. Elite prospects going elsewhere is Texas doesn't offer soon?

Sean Adams
  (12:59 PM)

No my man, that should not scare you. The starting safety playing next to Vaccaro will be Adrian Phillips. He's a big time player and will be an honors candidate during his career atbefore he leaves Texas. There are other guys behind he and Vaccaro. The safety position should not worry you at all.

Sean Adams
  (1:03 PM)

As Colt McCoy, Major Applewhite and David Ash last year proved, never think you can project what is going to happen at the QB position. The logic works but in college football planning is important but plans are useless.

Stephen (Houston)

Sean, you threw out the name Clarissa Davis like we would know who she is...

Sean Adams
  (1:07 PM)

Earned Most Outstanding Player honors as a freshman at the 1986 Final Four, leading Texas to the NCAA Championship with a flawless 34-0 record. Has been an Asst. at Texas and Rutgers.

Mahdee (Portland, Oregon)

OOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! yes that Oregon Ducks baby!!! Na what are the chances that Texas wake up and join the Pac-12?

Sean Adams
  (1:09 PM)

As a west coast kid, I was pulling for the Pac 12. I totally get why Texas would rather not be in a conference based in Walnut Creek, CA. With that said, Tempe, Seattle, LA and the bay area are a lot better trips than Ames, Lawrence, Stillwater, Morgantown.

Aubrey (College Station)

Has Texas significantly altered their philosophy on the types of athletes they target in recruiting?

Sean Adams
  (1:13 PM)

I don't know if it is significant but they are taking things slower in 2013. Some of that has to do with smaller scholarship numbers for the 2013 class. It also has to do with a better evaluation process and needs assessment.

Stephen (Houston)

Sean, What are the chances Major Applewhite is the next Head Coach at Texas?? Just asking - not predicting...

Sean Adams
  (1:15 PM)

I have never thought that Texas was the place for a first time head coach. It is part of the reason why I never fully bought into Will Muschamp even though, obviously, Florida is where he landed. I believe he will be the head coach at Texas at some point, I just don't know if he will be the next one.

speed (houston)

has a clear starter emerged at QB? Is Ash's timing improving with the new WRs? thanks

Sean Adams
  (1:17 PM)

I believe David Ash will be the starter and yes, all indications are that both QB's are doing a lot better with their relationship with the wide receiver group. Just always remember, year two is always better than year one.

Starks (Memphis, TN)

If you had to guess QB numbers (TD and Interception ratio) for 2012, what would they be?

Sean Adams
  (1:20 PM)

27 and 16 would be my guess. The numbers could actually end up being much better but I'm being cautiously optimistic. With the defense and the running game, the quarterback position does not have to be great for Texas to be successful.

EZ 28 (Davis,CA)

Basketball next year. Over/under 8 seed

Sean Adams
  (1:22 PM)

It depends on J'Covan Brown and Myck Kabongo. If they both leave, I say push. If one of them comes back I say better than an 8 seed.

Matthew (Minneapolis,MN)

Do you think Texas has BCS quality?

Sean Adams
  (1:24 PM)

They could be. It will all depend on the QB play. I have them slated for 9 or 10 wins and if they win 10, they will go to the BCS.

Sean Adams
  (1:25 PM)

Thanks for all of the great questions. We'll be back at it next week at the same time and the same place. I'm getting ready to do The Adams Theory on ESPN Austin.Peace
