Thanks for stopping by for the chat. Let's kick it off.
What does the Pittsburgh Steelers need to address in the 2012 NFL Draft?
Chris: Steelers need to address nose tackle, cornerback, inside linebacker and guard. They need to find an eventual replacement for Casey Hampton, and I'm not sure they're sold on Keenan Lewis being a starting corner. There's also the void left by James Farrior in the middle.
Jamison! Who do you like better for the Browns at 22 if they go Richardson at 4, K Wright or M Floyd?
Wright has more speed, but Floyd is more polished. I think Floyd gets taken before Browns get on the clock with their second first-round pick. So, Floyd would be the choice but I don't think he'll be around.
Who do you see the Steelers drafting in the 1st Rd? It's usually 'best player available' but that's the easy answer, who do you really think it will be?
If Alabama ILB Dont'a Hightower is there, the Steelers will make the pick in five seconds.
What are the chances of the ravens reaching an agreement with both Rice and Flacco before the season starts so that we can have enough time and cap room to add key peices?
Greg: Not so good. I see the Ravens getting a new deal done with Flacco before training camp. My guess is sometime in July. The focus will turn to Rice, but I don't think they will sign him before the season. I don't rule it out. I think the odds are against it.
With the 17th pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The Cincinnati Bengals select _______ _________?
Stanford G David DeCastro
with the loss of Hines ward and other between players, how should the steelers be expected to play this year?
As long as the Steelers have Roethlisberger and play that style of defense, the Steelers will always be Super Bowl contenders. The Ravens are the team to beat -- at this point -- but the Steelers should be expected to make the playoffs.
Is there any chance of David DeCastro falling to Pittsburgh in round one? I feel he would be a tremendous fit and pairing him next to All-Pro Maurkice Pouncey would vastly increase the interior line. There is always one or two teams that reach for players, thus throwing analysts and their mocks to the wind. Thoughts?
Luke: I don't see that happening. Guards don't hold as much value as other positions, but DeCastro will be taken in the top 20. The Bengals could take him with one of their two first-round picks.
McCoy and Tannehill? Do you think bringing in the Texas rival will fire McCoy up to not get beaten out by an Aggie?
I don't see the Browns taking Tannehill unless they trade down. If Browns stay at No. 4, the decision will between Trent Richardson and Justin Blackmon.
Jamison, any worry that the Ravens will lose Webb? Numerous reports say we're "right up against the cap", and I can totally see New England, or even Pittsburgh taking a run at him. What are you hearing?
Frank: There's always a chance that Webb could go somewhere. I think it's a very slim chance of happening. I see Webb with the Ravens in 2012.
Do you think the Browns should draft Richardson, or draft Blackmon or trade down and get a RB in free agency like Benson or Addai?
Caleb: Go with Trent Richardson. All indications say he could be a special running back. He is the type of playmaker that the Browns need. Blackmon is a good wide receiver but he doesn't have the elite speed that the Browns need.
With the moves the Bengals have made in free agency and the fact they are returning all 11 starters on a top 10 defense, what direction do you see them going at 17 and 21 in the draft.
Will: I see the Bengals going with two out of these three positions: guard, cornerback and wide receiver. The one not taken in the first round could be addressed in the second or third rounds. Running back could be an option for third round or later.
After the NFL combine, Poe showed how athletic he was. However, he did not show this athletic ability while he played at Memphis. This would raise a red flag in my mind since he was not dominating as the Combine would indicate. Do you believe that he could be a mediocre player or even a bust at nose tackle when he has to play at his best all the time??
Chuck: It's so hard to predict defensive linemen. It's almost as hard as projecting quarterbacks. What it comes down to for DL is work ethic. If he's lazy, he will be a bust. If he as a motor, he will be an All Pro.
What's the most pressing need on the Bengals roster? WR? Guard? CB? RB?
In this order: guard, wide receiver, running back and corner.
Is Maulaluga set to have a breakout year next season or is this as good as it gets?
Patrick: Maualuga was a disappointment but there is hope because he is so athletic. Let's give him one more year.
If the Bengals don't draft a receiver in the early rounds who do you see starting oppisite A.J.?
Shipley or Tate.
Have you heard any of the rumors that the Browns have traded down from #4 to #10 for two 2nd round picks????
Jason: Lowest the Browns say they will go is No. 8. So, dropping to No. 10 seems to be out of their range.
I read where Coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers may try to get a young qb either in free agency or the draft, maybe to eventually take over for Ben, down the years?
Debbie: Tomlin is talking about a developmental backup. The Steelers aren't thinking of an eventual replacement for Roethlisberger.
I saw that the Bengals are talking about bring back Jerome Simpson. We already brought back another player with character issue with Adam Jones, and Simpson is going to be getting at least a 4 game suspension. Isn't there someone else that we could be bringing in with less off the field issues and more on the field production? I was upset we didn't sign Robert Meachem. Thoughts?
I would stick with the WR group that the Bengals have right now instead of signing Simpson. The biggest reason, as you pointed out, is his baggage. Plus, he drops too many passes and runs bad routes. But I was surprised that the Bengals didn't pursue a free-agent receiver. They had the cap room to do so.
Do you think Greg Little have the potential to be a solid option at wide receiver in the NFL?
Daniel: Little is a solid No. 2 WR in this league. Browns need a No. 1 with speed.
Can these young corners step up? i mean they are prob better than William Gay already..
Rob: I think we'll find out. Lewis should get the first crack at it. But Cortez Allen will provide competition.
How do you think the Ravens will replace the men they lost in free agency?
The Ravens will promote from within at DE and OLB. I still see them drafting someone who can play LG.
Any chance the Bengals trade up for Blackmon or Claiborne? Or Sign Wallace away from Pittsburgh?
Dan: Unfortunately, no to all three. The Bengals are content to get two players in the first round. They're not targeting someone that they need to trade up for (unless Richardson surprisingly slips). I like the idea of going after Wallace, but it's not the Bengals' style to do so.
Why do you hate the Browns so much?
I don't hate anyone. I'm paid to provide my opinion and analysis. The Browns were the only team in the division not to make the playoffs. So, obviously, they will get more criticism than the other teams.
Do you realize how much you stirred up with your article this morning about "The Team to Beat"? If you haven't looked yet i would check it out. If you need more proof that the Steelers Ravens rivalry is the fiercest, then there you go. Also why are the steelers not the team to beat? We lost a lot less in free agency than the ravens and we would have won the division had it not been for one or two key injuries.
The Steelers still lost their share of veteran leadership and have injury concerns already at running back and nose tackle. The Ravens swept the division and went to the AFC championship game. Their history says they replace players. I think that answers your question.
It doesn't sound like Tomlin is sold on Sanders. What's the earliest round Pittsburgh goes after another WR in the draft?
Brian: I wouldn't rule out any round. Not only does he have concerns about Sanders but the Steelers have some decisions to make at wide receiver. Wallace is an unrestricted free agent next year and Antonio Brown is a restricted one.
Have you heard anything on the Wallace contract negotiations, will he be signed before traing camp, or will Pitt stick with the 2.7 million and let him go free agent next season?
Nothing has been said publicly about the negotiations. The Steelers have made it clear that they want to keep him. But it will be pricey.
With the additional compensation picks do you see the Steelers making a move to try and draft Poe?
All the comp picks for the Steelers are in the seventh round and you can't trade them.
Where do you get your information from? Do you have any inside channels?
I've covered the NFL for 11 seasons, so I do talk to people in the league. But this blog is more about my take on news.
Is there any truth to Pittsburgh moving Timmons to Farrior spot at ILB, and Foote and Sylvester battling for the other inside spot?
Jay: That is a good possibility. But that could change depending on who the Steelers draft.
The NFL is a QB driven league, with that said what are your thoughts on the Browns not pulling the trigger on RG3?
The Browns know they can't really compete until they get a franchise quarterback. Other than Luck, RG3 was the best shot at getting one. I liked that the Browns tried but not getting RG3 sets them back a year.
Do you still see corner as a likely option in the first round? even with the depth they have acquired, I still think they should go with a corner with one of the picks. And who do you like better for them, kirkpatrick or gilmore?
Wade: The moves decrease the chances of the Bengals taking a corner in the first round, especially if they add Terence Newman. But the Bengals need an eventual replacement for Clements, and Marvin Lewis puts a high priority on corners. And I would take Kirkpatrick.
How long is Tomlin under contract?
He is under contract for this year and the team has an option for 2013.
If Hightowers gone think the Steelers go after tackle from Ohio State?
Mike Adams, the OT from Ohio State, doesn't have the mean streak that the Steelers like in linemen.
IF the Browns draftTrent Richersonwill you finally say something nice about the Browns???
I promise I will.
Thanks everyone for stopping by to chat. We'll continue to have these on Wednesdays during the offseason unless my schedule forces a switch. Hope everyone has a great week. Also, check the blog tomorrow for the AFC North Free Agent Assessment.
