Hello there and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric and we've got an hour to talk fantasy baseball or, if you wish, fantasy football. We had a real baseball game that counted today! Thanks for showing up and let's go!
Whats the best reason to draft brett gardner ahead of Ichiro?
Should steal more bases and probably will score more runs, but Ichiro can hit .300 and Gardner doesn't have a great chance. I think Ichiro will bounce back this year, and might even knock in 70 runs.
Will Trout or Belt be impact players this year? (Watched the Giants yesterday?there must be room for Belt somewhere in that lineup!)
One would think there would be room for both, but there isn't. Don't harm the messenger. Trout is already in the minors, and I doubt we see him before midseason. Belt is hitting but the Giants want to use Huff and Schierholtz. I think he'll be demoted any day. Perhaps the Giants know something we don't... though I doubt it.
The latest report shows Drew Storen to start the season on the DL... who are your thoughts on his replacement? Clippard, Lidge, or Rodriguez (or a combination of the 3)?
Don't expect a long DL stint, at least as of now. There was no damage found in his MRI of his elbow. But Davey Johnson claims he will not move Clippard out of the setup role... so I think Lidge and Rodriguez will each get chances. I bet H-Rod and his 100 MPH heater get more chances. Plus, he can pitch more often.
I have the opportunity to snag Austin Jackson off the waiver wire...but I'd have to drop Brandon Belt, what do you think?
Jackson isn't a special fantasy option because he's a batting average risk and shouldn't hit a lot of home runs. There are safer stolen base options out there. I'd hold on to Belt a bit longer and just see if the Giants come to their senses...
Hey Big E - Have a general draft strategy question for you... If many other teams in my draft are going heavy on pitching early, should I (a) adjust my strategy and take some pitchers early too (to avoid being left with weak pitching), (b) adjust my strategy and take more hitters early (because there will be great value there) or (c) do not adjust at all (have faith in the strategy and preparation I came to the draft with)? Your advice would be appreciated.
Have faith in your strategy... if you've got the best offense then you'll be in position to trade for the pitching that proves valuable during the season. So many owners draft Francisco Liriano types but we won't know for sure for a month - perhaps more - if he's back. It's why you don't get caught in closer runs, or for catchers. Draft YOUR team... you know what you'll need in all the categories.
Is my team good ?
Yes, it really is awesome. !!!!!!
I think Hochevar and H.Alvarez are sleepers whats your take on them?
I don't expect either of them to get much better this season. Hochevar actually wasn't bad in 2011... perhaps he can win more but his K rate is what it is. Alvarez has upside, but didn't project to be an ace.
Minor League Power, Steals and OBP? Check. Leadoff hitter ahead of Beltran, Holliday and Berkman? Check. Love? Wait - it's missing...where is the love ???
I wrote a blog entry about Mr. Greene last week in which, while receiving misplaced scorn that I couldn't care less about, detailed how he was going to finally be good and run a whole lot this season. The love is there.
Do you think Ramon Hernandez can put up 25 hrs this year? Am I over estimating the Coors field switch? OR will Rosario really cut into his playing time?
I took Hernandez in a deep league draft over the weekend and was hoping for double digits in home runs. So yeah, 25 seems like a lot. The ballpark change helps but it's not like Cincy was Petco. In time Rosario gets to play, but probably not much or at all in April.
Why did they take mccarthy out after only 80 somethin pitches
Well, it is March. He's got 32 more starts. He wouldn't have won the game regardless... so it made sense to get some relievers into the game. McCarthy looked very good.. but it wasn't a great lineup he faced, either.
Thoughts on Delmon Young this year?
Just chose him in our last ESPN mock draft and frankly was surprised he's going so late. Delmon is not special, but 20 homers and 90 RBI with a decent batting average... I totally see that.
I took Justin Upton 7th overall over Cano and CarGo in a 10 team h2h .... think I'll regret that?
I would do the exact same thing. I took Upton ninth in this mock.
is chapman going to make the starting rotation for the reds? or will the injuries to madson and masset ensure his presence in the pen?
Neither. I think the Reds have to start Homer Bailey, and Chapman heads to the minors to keep stretched out for when a rotation spot opens up. They have enough relief without Madson and Chapman.
Dustin Ackley! On pace for 162 hr and 162 steals!!!
Yeah, I'd be happy with 12 of each this season! But certainly there's potential for more... not 162, but you know.
Supposedly I have had no serious injury since I was knocked around on May 14th, yet I have not returned to game action since. What's going on?
He has a concussion. I wouldn't play him in March either. Has no bearing on April... he'll be just fine, or rather he'll be the same strikeout missing, low average but nice stolen base and power guy as always.
Alejandro De Aza has a starting job locked up - so what does his final line look like?
Let's say 400 at-bats, 8 home runs, 40 RBI, 19 steals.
What are your thoughts on having too many players on one team? I drafted Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, and Nick Markakis and didn't realize it until I was reviewing my draft. Should I drop Markakis and pick up another outfielder just to break up the trio?
Not sure why people worry about this. In football it's one game per week, and a defense can shut you down. Over 162 games it doesn't work that way. Good players are good players regardless of being from the same team. It only matters in baseball for h2h leagues occasionally, like if you're in Cleveland and it snows and you miss an entire weekend...keep Nick.
Why no love for Trumbo? He can be had for cheap- will qualify at 3B, OF and 1B- and given injuries that every team has, he will play plenty. 260 and 25hrs has value, no?
I don't think he's either a lock to play as much as you think or hit that many home runs again. Pitchers have to realize he never walks and one would think he'd see fewer down the middle fastballs. Has power, but lot of holes in the swing as well.
So was it dumb to draft BJ Upton at 89?
Not at all. Same guy as always, and he's worth that.
Why only 400 ABs?
It's tough to expect De Aza, with 346 at-bats over parts of 4 seasons in the majors since 2007 to be a regular player ALL year long...
Over/under on shelly duncan HR's this season: 20
Oooh, I like it. I will say under but Duncan can matter. And if he struggles in April, I'm telling you, Russ Canzler can do what Duncan does.
Colon or Vargas make a good matchups play tonight or is it better to stay away from both?
I don't see either the Athletics or Mariners scoring a lot of runs, so yeah, for ERA and WHIP, they should be fine.
How many at bats for Chase Utley this year?
At this point I'd hope for 400, but take the under. But even if he does what he did last season, 11 home runs and 14 steals in essentially 4 months is nice at 2B.
Do Pence's numbers get tweaked not that he has been hitting third for the last few days and probably will in the regular season?
Not really. He was hitting third or fourth or, with Howard back fifth anyway. I like him more than most, but that's not a good Phillies offense.
Who's your bounce back for the year?
Well, I could rattle off 10 guys, but Dunn and Rios in Chicago... Matusz in Baltimore and don't be shocked when Kyle Drabek is good. I'm talking players not like Carl Crawford that disappointed us in 2011, but the WORST players of last year. I should blog about that...
W.Ramos could hit 35 homers this year wheres the love?
Do you think that perhaps 35 is a bit optimistic? I'd say there's a 25 percent chance he hits 20.
is yost gonna announce who is closing in kc or is he gonna do it by committee until it shakes itself out?
He's in no hurry, but I bet he picks Broxton because he has that meaningless "experience" and managers tend to lazily go with that. Sorry, but half the managers in the game just don't get it. Not saying Yost will choose Broxton, but coming off elbow surgery he's no sure thing.
Carlos Ruiz or Ryan Doumit in a league that counts ks and obp?
Ruiz gets on base, though it's worth noting the Utley injury really hurts him. Now he's hitting seventh in front of a rookie 2B Galvis so he won't be walked as much with the pitcher not next. It matters. Still, tough to expect Doumit to stay healthy and it's not like he'll hit for major power at Target...
What are your thoughts on Allen Craig? I can drop Kelly Johnson to get him. He has 2B/OF eligibility in my league.
Well, Kelly J is a power guy and I wouldn't cut him, but I do like Craig a lot more with 2B eligibility. Don't expect many April at-bats though.
Thoughts on Ryan Howard? Will he come back healthy? When? What kind of production can we expect?
It's going to be a lost season for the big guy. Sorry. MAYBE he comes back in June but with that injury, tough to expect past production.
Karabell, you're killing me. A) Drabek, really? B) Heyward or Rios?
I try. What's wrong with going out on a limb? Can't expect me to simply state what everyone else is stating! I'm different! And Heyward over Rios. Younger, less risk, and a brighter future.
Ok, here's a strategy question: I drafted ZERO starting pitchers in a H2H Each league in an attempt to win ERA, WHIP, and Saves each week while bulking up on offensive stats. However, a guy offered my C. Lee for Konerko. Should I take it even though it doesn't fit with my original strategy?
Seems like a wise and safe move, no? I see your point, but you know occasionally relievers get lit up as well.
What are your expectations of Aviles this year now that he has one the starting job?
He'll lose the job. Look at his history. He can't hit right-handers, is ordinary defensively... Bobby V will be tired of him before May. I'm kind of serious.
OK EK, I have been looking everywhere, what is the MLB rules for putting players on the 15 day DL prior to the season (aka, how soon can it begin or will it begin)?. I need to put Utley and possibly Crawford there and pick up some replacements before other people jump on the guys I am eying.
Real life teams are in no hurry to officially place players on the DL, and while I can't speak for how ESPN does it in all cases, I'm pretty sure they need to wait until it's official.
Over/Under: 205 IP and 14 win for Derek Holland?
Over on both. Legit guy will be the top Texas starting pitcher.
I drafted Bryce Harper with my final pick in a 12 team H2H league. Worth holding onto for a couple months in the hopes he gets a June/July callup?
If you can wait that long, absolutely. He should eventually come up and he will be special.
Can i feel confident starting Gamel as my 3B? I traded Arod
The Brewers are confident enough he'll hit that he's the starting first baseman and hitting fifth. Yes, you're fine.
Would you rather hold on to Bryce Harper or Lucas Duda as a final bench guy?
Well, Duda is gonna hit 25 home runs. Harper can't do that in 2 months. In a keeper it's Harper, but Duda helps a lot this season. And it's not like he's old, either.
Adam Wainwright looks great ... is he teasing us, or is it possible he's back to his pre-TJ form already?
I think he's fine and will be a top-20 starter again, perhaps better than that. But most of my colleagues are far more cautious with him.
You seem to be really high on Hosmer this year. ESPN projections have at .293 with 66 R's, 19 HR's, 78 RBI's, 11 SB's. Thoughts?
I'd say more like 26 home runs and 95 RBI, 84 runs. I took him in the fourth round of a recent draft and felt good about it.
What are your thoughts on K. Morales this year? What type of stat line should we expect? 25/80/80?
I think because of the nature of the injury and time he has missed it's asking a lot for him to get 500 at-bats, but if he does, yep. These numbers are reachable.
can josh johnson last a whole season? do you think miami kept him out all last year because they were out of contention?
No, I think they kept him out because he couldn't pitch. It's not like they were drawing any fans. I'm hoping for 25 starts, and believe me, that's optimism.
What are your thoughts on having too many PITCHERS from one team? I drafted 3 Jays, Romero, Morrow, Henderson, to go along with Price, Shields, Liriano, Bucholz, Valverde and Walden?
Doesn't matter one bit. If you have Correia, McDonald and Morton all from Pitt, then that's a problem.
Duda was dropped and is on waivers. Do I drop Austin Jackson, Angel Pagan or Carlos Lee?
Yeah, all of them. But cut Jackson first. Low batting average, negligible power, you can get steals anywhere.
I know everyone preaches not to get too excited over spring stats, but Bret Lawrie is absolutely killing it right now. I'm also aware of Berry's argument that taking him too early in drafts removes all value from the pick. Taking position scarcity into consideration, how early is too early to take him EK?
Many of us differ on this. I'm all for value... but if I think a guy is going to produce monster numbers worthy of the fourth round and he won't make it to my next pick, does anything else matter? Why would you care? Take the guy.
I'm tearing it up this spring, how will I do this year when the games matter?
Wrote about Cain today... nice source of pop and speed, and he gets to hit second ahead of the great Hosmer. I'm buying. Hope for 12 homers, 20 steals, .280.
Over/under 25 steals for Pierre in 2012?
Under, but it does look like Pierre will beat out Podsednik, who has been better at the plate and in the field, for the final roster spot in Philly. Incredible. Decision making is trending the wrong way in some places...
Dunn stat line: .250/30/90?
I have him at .240, 25-85, but certainly we're in the same mindset. Just FORGET about 2011, people. In a lot of cases it does not matter.
Why don't the Reds start Chapman over Bronson Arroyo?
Because most teams aren't thinking about how to make their teams better, but about salary and player emotions and PR moves. I'm serious. Is there any doubt who would be better over 30 starts? Not to me. But Arroyo, who I've worked with on a commercial and is very nice, just allowed 46 home runs, but his rotation spot is perfectly safe.
Are you a big fan of Kendrick too hitting in front of Pujols?
I'm a Kendrick fan no matter where he hits in the order. If he hits second, no matter who follows, he'll score more runs than if he hits sixth.
Why is there no talk of Wigginton playing 2B in Utley's absence. The lineup needs some power outside of Pence
Have you seen Wiggy play second base? It's awful. Play Galvis there and hope he hits .260 but plays stellar defense.
25 HRs for Duda? Really? In that case, him or Gaby Sanchez?
Duda. I don't know why there's so much shock in this regard. Maybe it's Mets fans that just aren't happy. Duda always hit in the minors, he's hit in the majors, he's having a big spring, he's going to be good.
Nobody's really talking about Gordon Beckham this year. Still fantasy relevant?
Not really. His fine rookie season seems like a decade ago.
Eric, based on reports and Spring Training performance, has Hanley Ramirez jumped back into 1st round consideration in a 10 team draft?
I had him at No. 10 in January, and now he's at 9 for me. People overrate one bad season far too much. Legit 25/25 threat adding eligibility and motivation.
Your thoughts on the Chi Sox closer situation????
Matt Thornton should be closing in April but I think Addison Reed takes the job away and gets more saves in 2012.
Think Gamel plays 3B at all this year?
Not even once. But he's eligible there all season. And frankly, 1B is not as deep as 3B.
So wait, other publications saying Beckham will finally break out are doing so in case it really happens so they can point to it as a way to prove how smart they are? Say it ain't so!!!!
Well, I can't see the argument why he's going to all of a sudden emerge. He might, but there's no evidence I can find. As for proving intellect in fantasy baseball based on predictions, that ship sailed for me about 10 years ago. Just do your best...
What's the highest auction price you've heard of? Our AL League in Red Sox Nation had a bid of $61 for Pedro one year....madness, right? Any stories like that you'd care to share?
In our 20-team office auction league a decade ago someone paid $62 for Todd Helton. I remember thinking we need to get some more veteran fantasy owners in this league! (He didn't win)
What are you expecting from Carlos Beltran this year?
I'd say 140 games with 22 home runs and 85 RBI. Nothing wrong with that where he's going in drafts.
LaHair is having an awful spring...should we assume hes just a Quad A player after all this hype on him
Because he's struggling in March? No. Means nothing. Good job by the Cubs not overrating things and pushing not-ready Rizzo into the job. LaHair WILL hit.
Bonifacio looks like the worst player in spring training. He can't steal if he can't get on base. You worried about him at all?
Do you think 3 weeks of spring games erases what he accomplished in 2011? It doesn't for me. And there's this new rule... he's going to steal first base. OK, maybe not... don't worry about spring numbers!
what do you think my final numbers are this year?
How about 5'11 and 225 pounds? OH, you mean power. 22 homers and 78 RBI, .256.
Any interest in Brett Wallace as a CI sleeper?
Not one bit. Move on. A bunch of major league teams already have.
Are you worried that Valverde's ERA + WHIP will increase, while K's may decline this season?
Yep. It's going to happen. He's not as special as people think.
How would you feel if Butler was you starting 1B?
Fine. Safe for batting average and durability and should knock in runs. It'd be nice if he could hit 25 home runs.
Why is SS Dee Gordon going 5 rounds after OF Michael Bourne when they should acheive similar numbers? Is Bourne being overdrafted, Dee underdrafted, or both?
Both, really. I just can't understand the argument for taking Bourn in the fourth round. Makes no sense to me for a one-category guy. Dee does it and plays SS... he has more risk, but still, I'd say Dee is not a top 100 guy, but Bourn in the fourth round... you'll never see me do that. One stat!
sounds like Chris Parmelee is going to get a shot to play everyday either at 1st or RF, any thoughts? does he have value?
Remember what Kendry Morales did in 2009? Exactly. (OK, less power, but big sleeper)
What do you see out of Paul Goldschmidt this year?
Enough swinging and missing to keep that ballpark ventilated. Not a big fan.
More saves: Guerra or Jansen?
Guerra gets twice as many saves.
Would you ever "punt" runs and rbis?
Only if I was trying to lose.
What do you think of Vernon Wells? Good bounceback candidate? Can he hit .260/25/70?
Yes, he is more than capable of doing this.
Will Heisey get enough ABs this year to be relevant?
Knowing Dusty Baker, probably not. Take the way under on another 18 home runs.
Re: Bourne - are you forgetting about Avg and Runs? Seems like that's 3 cats - no?
Career .271 hitter who hit .265 in 2010. And he's never scored 100 runs. I'm not saying he stinks... he doesn't hurt you in runs or average, but even if he steals the most bases in the big leagues, you must take a power guy in the first 5 rounds. He's overrated.
any hope left in LaPorta?
No, even the Indians have moved on. Organizational fodder at this point.
Mike (OH) is right on.
I think you should take Bourn in the first round! And punt RBIs, too.
Wandy going to bounce back from an awful spring?
Yep. Might not win much, but the ERA and Ks should be usable.
Speaking of Parmalee, would you draft him over the likes of Freese, Mat Gamel at CI?
Nope. But as a late-round sleeper in a deeper league, yep.
How long before Montero gets C eligibility?
May 14th. Honestly. The Mariners are in NO hurry to play him at catcher.
Worried about Braun at all? No Prince, groin injury and the controversy that will follow him all year?
Not. At. All.
does b butler get 1b eligibitily?
Nope. Hosmer plays 'em all. PERHAPS Hosmer plays some right field for interleague, but don't bet on it.
with everybody knowing who you like/dislike is it harder for you to get the guys you "like" ????
Yeah, as a matter of fact, that is the case. But it's all good... I just find others I like.
I have 3 daughters and no sons, nobody in my house cares about sports...throw me a bone...Matusz a better option than Colby Lewis or Peavey?
No, I would still take Lewis and then Peavy over Matusz.
Jaime Moyer's last chance to prove himself coming up later today. Feel good story, not much fantasy value. Old Guys Rule (especially older than me)!
He is going to win 12 games. And I'll smile after each one.
On that happy note, my time is up. I thank you for giving me the forum to answer questions and have some fun, so have a great day, study up for your drafts, get up really early and watch Bartolo Colon tomorrow morning and ... enjoy!
